MMH -- what say you?

South Korean scientists have said they have developed a new genetically altered strain of virus which is highly efficient in targeting and killing cancer cells.
The new therapy developed by the team from Yonsei University uses a genetically-engineered form of the adenovirus, which normally causes colds.
The adenovirus was implanted with a human gene that is related to the production of relaxin, a hormone associated with pregnancy.
When injected into cancerous tumors, the virus quickly multiplies in the cancer cells and kills them, the team said.
The new adenovirus can target only cancer cells and does not harm normal cells, the team said.
Existing viral treatments fail to kill off all the cancerous cells.
"I believe we have found a way to overcome one of the great obstacles to finding a genetically altered viral cure for cancer," Yun Chae-Ok, one of the researchers, told AFP on Thursday.
Following three rounds of injections, more than 90 percent of cancer cells in the brains, liver, lungs and womb of mice disappeared within 60 days, the team said.
Clinical tests will be carried out early next year and last 18 months, Yun said. The research results were published in the October 18 edition of the prestigious bimonthly Journal of the National Cancer Institute in the United States.

Really? It's bigger than fire?
How dare you say anything is more important than 9/11. Traitor.
It seems that the entire goal of the western world has become to prolong life infinitely. People are supposed to die. People rarely used to get cancer because they only lived for 40-50 years. As the life expectancy rises, so do the number of deadly diseases that we encounter. Nature is fighting back.
Well, that and Big Macs, Twinkies, Diet Cokes, and cigarettes....

You know, I never really understood that either. I'm not a deathmonger, but...man, the world is getting pretty crowded as it is. What's the point in keeping everyone around indefinitely? That said, if I get cancer...I'm stoked about this news.
ahh when like 12 yr old kids get cancer thats pretty bad. they deserve to live alittle longer. what if your wife got cancer?

We've got to go somewhere else. To the moon, Alice!
Way to take the most extreme cases and use them as an overarching reason to root for something.
What if your mom/daughter/sister had sexual fantasies about being violently raped by a sledgehammer and was perfectly fine with that happening? We should then legalize, and root for, sledgehammer rape.
Sledgehammers can't rape. They're incapable of independant movement and probably thought.
Well maybe things would change if we legalized it.
Transfer the conciousness of terminal cancer patients into sledgehammers. Then we'll see.
Its great news. For those who have family members with cancer and those with cancer its hope. For me, my grandmother has breastcancer, aunt just had it last year, my pops has skin cancer, my other grandmother died of lung/brain cancer, other aunt cancer, I know its just a matter of time.
Most of the rapid reproducing is occuring in Asia(where its dirt poor) and this type of treatment wont be available to the masses given their status. I dont think its going to affect the overall population too much, hopefully this is the greatest scientific discovery in the 21st century
sweet, i can start smoking again.
Since I'm a smoker, I've been making $$ contributions to cancer research for the last 10 years or so with the thought that I may actually benefit from it someday. Glad to see a return on my investment.
Maybe now all you whiny ass sissy bitches will shut up about smoking in bars.

If they passed out rubbers in China it wouldn't be as bad. They hump like bunnies over there.
I believe China limits the number of kids per family.

I think that China heavily taxes couples that have more than one child.

Now thats a great idea! Its like the anti-welfare tax.
I was working with someone from our Shanghai office and he saw my kids picture on my desk. He mentioned them and showed me a picture of his son. Having two kids I mentioned that I didn't want to have more children. He looked kind of sad and said he wanted more kids but wasn't allowed. I felt like an ass for a second.
hell if i had an asian wife, i'd be a baby making machine. you know how smart those people are? hell i'd be rich.

not really i had a half-breed before. nothing spectacular
Designing a custom human cell-killing virus that rapidly reproduces... nah, something like that couldn't have any unintended consequences.
Relax. It's not like viruses mutate.

Right. They based it off the common cold virus, so it's not contagious or anything I'm sure.
They're Asian scientists, right? I'm sure they've checked and double-checked the odds on it mutating to kill us all. Or all non-Asians.
We've all got good health care right? So what's to worry about? Does the virus get you high? I'll try it.
Can we go back to talking about sledgehammer rape?
Several problems with this. Adenovirus is self-replicating. Any cell it infects will make thousands of copies of the virus, and explode, releasing the virus to infect neighboring cells. Now, they said it only kills cancer cells. Sounds like bullshtein to me. Especially since they injected the virus directly into the tumor. If it only kills tumor cells, give it systemically and it should still work. So why didn't they - the simple answer is they did and it didn't work. Probably because large particles are selectively cleared from the blood stream by the liver. Remember the Geisinger kid at Penn?
Nevermind the fact that several South Korean scientists have been nailed for modifying or outright falsifying data in the last few years.
Party pooper. ;)
Sounds like someone is trying to protect his job.
OK, I've read the article now, and all I gots to say is: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
First off, the adenovirus is specific to human cells, and won't affect the mouse at all. There is no way to evaluate tox AT ALL. Second, direct injections into tumors is generally regarded as bullshtein. The likelyhood that their virus will have no effect in a human patient is ridiculously low. That it will target only the tumor cells is ludicrous.
No one does a Kaplan-Meier analysis of a xenograft. No one. You measure the size of the tumor with calipers, it's pretty easy. Kaplan-Meier is really difficult to interpret, which is undoubtedly why it was used.
Finally, JNCI is where you publish when 4th and 5th tier journals say no. There data seems OK, but there methods are terribly flawed, and this will almost certainly lead no where with respect to human impact.
For those that are interested, here's the article: http://jncicancerspectrum.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/jnci;98/20/1482.pdf
Oh, and BTW, eat me Demon. ;)
Nerd.
Well, DUH!
So, to boil it down for those of us that don't speak pharmaceuticals: it won't work, huh?
Well, they tried gene therapy in that Geisinger kid. He went into multi-organ failure and died a week later. My guess (and this isn't my expertise, mind you), you'd have a similar response with this.
Now I'm feeling quite suckered in regards to my annual financial contributions to cancer research. Find a cure bitches. I only got about 25 more years of smoking left before I catch the cancer.
