Troy will come back! He'll be our nickle back!

Mark Eckel's journalistic juices must be flaring up. He doesn't get to write about Kevin Johnson but his second favorite person is available now...

Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: Zanshin on September 15, 2006, 10:50:12 AM
Actually, anyone who wouldn't want him back might be semi-retarded.

Let's see, we have next to nothing in terms of depth in the secondary, one of our starting corners is out indefinately, and a veteran leader guy with local ties might become available who happens to know our defense and is versitile enough to play some corner or safety.  Yeah, that's a tough call.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on September 15, 2006, 10:50:55 AM
If the Bills can't use him, I'd say anyone that does want him back is semi-retarded.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: Zanshin on September 15, 2006, 10:54:28 AM
That makes no sense.  The Bills don't want him as their starting safety...and they want to get the Rookie in.  They're going nowhere this year.  The team wants him around.  I didn't say I want him as a starter, but he can clearly still perform as a role-player.   Troy Vincent today is better than Dexter Wynn will ever be.  That's ridiculously clear.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on September 15, 2006, 10:58:45 AM
You know for a fact he's 100% healthy, then?  Good to know.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: Zanshin on September 15, 2006, 11:00:47 AM
Did I seriously have to say that "If he's healthy in a few weeks"?  That's sort of one of those, "go without saying" sort of things, don't you think?

Last reports I read said he'd realistically be ready to play in four weeks.  I'm sort of counting on any team that thinks about signing him to do a little in the way of due dilligence.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on September 15, 2006, 11:04:41 AM
So, he'll be healthy around the same time as Lito.  That's inconvenient.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: Zanshin on September 15, 2006, 11:06:35 AM
Actually, it doesn't matter.  We still need the depth.  Lito seems somehow more injury-prone than Westbrook.  We need the insurance policy.  And it's not like Dawk is getting any younger.  Having some flexible depth in that defensive backfield, for a team with playoff aspirations, isn't a bad thing.

Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career

I'm quite sure he's the second coming...

...but count me in for wanting a guy with legitimate big-game experience in a pinch, if at all possible.

Yeah, God forbid I question the "genius" of bringing in an injured 35-year-old for secondary depth.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career

Where exactly did I say genius?  Let me ask you this.  It's the NFC Championship game, and Lito goes down with an injury.  Hood moves over to start.  Would you seriously want Hanson over Vincent on the field?

He's still 35, then.

All I'm saying is that the "semi-retarded" comment was overdone.  I'm not saying which decision I'd make if in that position, only that it's not as simple as you're claiming, considering his age and the Bills' willingness to possibly part with him.

I really don't think it was.  You either want veteran depth, or you don't.  And not wanting it would be pretty stupid.  The Bills reportedly don't want him because he has so much influence in the locker room, not because of his play.  That's why the veteran players are upset.
Title: Re: Troy Vincent done for the year, maybe his career
Post by: Zanshin on September 15, 2006, 12:28:00 PM
Moreover, we're talking about someone who knows the defense and would bring experience on the cheap.  That's the kind of thing the Eagles like.

Actually, I don't think that worked out too horrendously.  Pretty much what was expected; maybe a little less.  That said, I was happy to have him around.  And Troy has shown more recently than Hugh had at that point.  But keep on trying.

I don't have to try to point out that 35 years old is far past anyone's prime.

Post by: Zanshin on September 15, 2006, 02:13:31 PM
Totally, totally saying that.  ;)

It's way easier to argue against that than it is the reality that Vincent, if healthy enough, would be nice to have in our back pocket on the cheap for a playoff run.  Way easier.
