How much ARE stud fees nowadays?  If the leg isn't so bad the horse has to be destroyed, he'll be living the good life.

I never understood why horses were killed after having bad leg injuries. Can't they just sell him to some farmer or person who owns a lot of land and wants a horse? Not that I care if they kill them, but just curious as to why a broken leg on a horse is life threatening.

I'm not positive, but I think I remember hearing someplace that leg injuries on a horse, especially when it comes to broken bones, usually don't heal properly and the horse becomes, for lack of a better word, useless.

The main reason horses are put down after broken legs is blood flow issues.  They were talking about it on Fox Sports Radio last night.  If the blood flow is okay, the horse can pretty much be a stud from now on and get all the tail it wants.  If it's bad, glue.

QuoteThere was more good news Tuesday on Barbaro's recovery from a catastrophic injury to his right hind leg.

"He's actually better today than he was even yesterday and he was pretty good yesterday," Dr. Dean Richardson said. "He's walking very well on the limb, absolutely normal vital signs. He's doing very well."

AP Photo
Barbaro is lifted out of a special swimming pool following hours of surgery to repair his badly injured right hind leg.

Barbaro was on his feet in his stall, even scratching his left ear with his left hind leg just two days after Richardson and a team of assistants spent more than five hours pinning together the leg bones he shattered in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday.

from today's NYT:

QuoteAugust 10, 2006
Prognosis Grows Brighter for Barbaro
By JOE DRAPE
Barbaro's fractured right hind leg is healing well, and veterinarians say they are encouraged by the progress the colt is showing in regrowing the hoof wall on his left hind leg.

Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner who took a catastrophic misstep that shattered his right hind leg in the Preakness Stakes on May 20, was said to be resting comfortably yesterday in the intensive care unit of the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals in Kennett Square, Pa. On Tuesday, his cast was changed.

"The leg looked good under the cast, especially considering the length of time that he has been in a cast," Dean Richardson, the chief for surgery, said in a statement yesterday. "The radiographs also were encouraging. There is no sign of active infection. This is further supported by his markedly improving blood values over the last two weeks."

Richardson said Barbaro had come out of the cast changing without problems and continued to be a good patient.

"He is a very intelligent horse and has definitely figured out the whole process," he said.

The cast, which encloses the foot and extends past the knee, will be changed regularly until the bones and joint are fused enough to sustain Barbaro's weight.

His left hind foot, which developed a crippling and often-fatal condition known as laminitis, is also improving. After removing 80 percent of Barbaro's left hoof wall last month, Richardson warned that the colt's chances of recovery were poor.

Still, Richardson and Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, decided to continue aggressive treatment for what could be a lengthy convalescence as long as Barbaro was not suffering.

Veterinarians are changing bandages and the protective boot on Barbaro's left foot daily, and Richardson sounded a hopeful note in his statement. "It is dry and healthy looking, with excellent early regrowth at the coronary band," he said.

If anyone still has their Sunday newspaper, check out the PARADE magazine insert.  One of the questions on the front page asked about the status of Barbaro, and they reported that he suffered a setback but is now in stable condition.  :-D

The website got hit with several dozen complaints today....

Link (http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2007/edition_02-11-2007/Personality_Parade)

QuoteEditor's note: In the Feb. 11 edition of "Walter Scott's Personality Parade," we reported that 2006 Kentucky Derby champion Barbaro was in stable condition. Sadly, Barbaro developed serious complications after we went to press, and the horse had to be euthanized on Jan. 29.
