Title: Your most nerve-wracking moment as an Eagles fan?
Post by: The BIGSTUD on May 08, 2006, 05:14:33 PM
There have been many nerve-wracking moments as an Eagles fan, but recently for me I'd say I was extremely nervous in 2003 when Akers was getting up to kick the tying field goal against the Packers after 4th and 26. That probably was the most nervous I was in a game that I remember most recently.

Unfortunately we got embarassed the game after, but that Packers game was still a great game.

ummm... the final failed attempted drive in the Super Bowl against the Pats.  Not sure what else could beat that.

That wasn't as nerve-wracking as ultimately disappointing. After the hell of a punt, you had to know the Eagles weren't going to drive 99 yards with that little of time left.

The whole SB was they had a legitimate shot in that game and could have won if not for some head scratching errors by the coaching staff and McNabb.

Watching Westbrook return the punt at the Meadowlands from the stands, searching the field for flags.  I couldn't believe it wasn't called back.  Not because there was a foul--there were none--but because it was simply too good to be true.

Except is was true.  Ha!

Every time LJ catches the ball then turns up field to run. I'd rather he'd just make the catch and fall.

The Super Bowl. Not the final drive, because it would have taken perhaps the greatest drive in Bowl history to win the game. But watching them lackadaisically fritter away the last five minutes of the game in the previous drive. I was pacing the room like a madman.

Pretty well any playoff game but for me it's almost any MNF game.  Eagles lose I get razed, Eagles win I gloat.
Most recent memory was a couple of years ago against Minny.   That game dam near killed me.  Or going back a few more years when the Eagles finally beat the NYG and it came on MNF but only after Collins fumbled the football.  I was a wreck throughout that game.

The Monday Night game when Hutton fumbled the snap on a chip shot field goal against the Cowboys, I cried when they lost that game.  I am not someone that cries but the Eagles have made me do it twice the second time was when they lost to TB in the NFCCG.

For that Monday night game I was on the phone with a Dallas fan giving him the gears just before that happened.  Somehow my cell phone started to break up after the miss and I lost the connection  ???

#3 1978 Wildcard Playoff at Atlanta.  Mike Michel missing a chip shot to win it.  I almost cried.

#2 1988 Playoff game at Chicago.  We had that game and couldn't score.  Two TD's called back on the same drive and 4 Zendejas FG's.  That team would have made some noise as the playoffs moved on.

#1 Last game at The Vet.  Not even going there.  I haven't had lunch yet.

Trent Cole would look down upon your sissy ass crying with disdain. Nancy.

For me, December 12, 2004. Eagles vs. Skins at FedEx field. Where Ramsey lobbed the ball up and Dawk came up with the pick. I work with a bunch of taterskins fargstick iceholes who frequent ES.com and lap on Art's balls, and they gauranteed the Birds would lose. The bet was that if the Birds won, they would have to go out and buy authentic T.O jerseys and wear them at work for the entire week If I lost, it was a Clinton Portis authentic jersey all week.. I have a picture of those bitches with the shame written all over there mugs on my desk. It is a great repellent, they never come by my desk anymore, even during the last season.  Thank you Brian Dawkins....and a big farg, farg, farg you to the legion of Extremeskins doucebags.

I remember that well, as it was about 15 seconds before I punched my Cowboy fan friend in the face.  :( That wasn't nerve-wracking, since I don't think anyone even considered the possibility of a botch. I'll never forget being at the Eagles Carnival, which I think was the following week, where they had Hutton holding for fans at the FG event. The shtein he must have took must have been mind-numbing.

Westbrook's return against the Giants had to be mine also, as I actually passed out for a few seconds from yelling. Never had that happen before or since.

"Best" nerve-wracking experience?  Waiting for the clock to tick down on the NFCCG against Atlanta.  It was like time stood still for five minutes and the clock refused to move.  I was sure Atlanta was going to pull a miracle until the confetti started raining down.

"Worst" nerve-wracking experience?  The last drive in the Super Bowl.  I was sure McNabb was going to pull a rabbit out of his hat and win the big one.  After all, New England had won two miraculous Super Bowls in three years.  No way they were going to win a third.

"Worst" moment as an Eagles fan?  Look below...

yeah, the last 10 minutes of the 3rd and first 5 of the fourth quarters of the superbowl when the farging defense couldnt stop a marble rolling across a counter.

IIRC it was all Moore by himself... and IIRC the only reason he was there was because he had been burned big time earlier in the game biting on a fake. And he basically said to himself before that play that he would stay back and not react untill he knew what was going on.

Nerve wrecker for me:

The game at Pittsburgh; first numerous onside kicks, then the FG unit running on to the field with 18 seconds remaining, running clock after the previous play ended to line up for a 45 yard or so FG...

Westbrook's punt return agains the Giants.

Some good ones in here.

Dutch, I remember that PIT game well. I almost got into 4 fights that day with Stillers fans. Timmy Hauck recovered the Akers OSK and then they had to do it all over again because of a penalty. And then Hauck recovered it again. I believe Brian Mitchell scored the tying TD. And I know The Flying T scored in that game as well.

I also recall the Damon Moore-Bobby Taylor-Ron Dixon play vividly. I was celebrating our 1st NFC East championship at The Sports Dome in Ft. Hood with a bunch of other Birds fans. Then the Giants ran that play (The Lambuth Special - named because Ron Dixon went to Lambuth College) and I ended up on the floor of the place praying to god that he did not score.

As for my choice(s):

First of all, I am a nervous wreck every game. I can feel my heartrate increase as soon as the ball kicks off. No other sport does this to me. But when the Eagles are on, I am out of control.

#1 most nerve wracking was the 2002 NFCCG. After BMitch returned that ball and Duce scored ( to this day I still get chills remembering how the Vet sounded after that) I was crazy out on control. No way we'd lose, right? But I was afraid we would...and we did. I was catatonic for days. I sat in my recliner for hours without moving afterwards.

I would list the Super Bowl, but that was a given to every Iggles fan. Millions of us were bordeline "bring out the goddamn paddles and shock my heart" nervous.

The minute I saw the lateral, I knew it was trouble.  I was near shteinting bricks when Moore finally made the tackle.

And I was at that MNF game at FedEx, which was also the "foreign substance" game.  You should've seen that place clear out.  I thought Dawk was going to call a fair catch on that "pass". :-D

LOTS of worthy choices listed in this thread, but this one still makes me crazy all these years later. I almost cried, too   :'( And remember on that same drive, Ron Jaworski hitting reserve WR Oren Middlebrook with a perfect strike that would have been a TD, and the Falcon defender had overrun the play and Middlebrook bobbled it, almost caught it again.......and dropped it?  :boom I was seated when that play began and lying prone on the floor by the time it ended.  :-\

The entire 2005 NFCCG, at least until Chad's game-clinching TD.  That sets the bar for nerve-wracking because I couldn't even think about anything else the entire week.  The night before the game I was so nervous I as literally shaking...got blackout drunk, passed out on my friend's couch at around 4:30 am, and woke up at 7 the morning of the game dead sober with no hang over.  Trudged back to my room thru the 18 inches of snow we'd had dumped on us the night before and spent the rest of the day on CF and on the phone with friends until kickoff.

As far as nerve racking goes:  waiting for the instant replay vs. the taterskins in the playoffs (the Earnest Byner fumble run back for a TD).  I didn't think I'd ever hear something louder than the cheers for the runback, until the boos started when it was ruled down by contact. :boom

Since I posted a photo of my worst moment as an Eagles fan, I might as well post a photo of the best too:

I also recall the Damon Moore-Bobby Taylor-Ron Dixon play vividly.

Im glad im not the only one who remembers Taylor in there.   :paranoid

Bobby did what he usually did when it came to tackling...he just got in the way.

He took a great angle and forced Dixon to slow it up and look for a cutback and when he had to slo it up a bit that is when Moore got his ass.

Most nerve wracking moment?  Let's see, hhmmmm......from Week 1 through Week 16 every year since 1972 and the playoffs in 1978,79, 80, 81, 88, 89, 90, 92, 94, 95, 99, 2000, 01, 02 , 03, 04.  Other than that I'm quite relaxed.

I'd have to say the Chicago Fog Bowl in 1988, I loved those Buddy Ryan years.  And it was so painful not being able to watch what was going on and having to listen to the TV commentators try to describe the action.

That game should have been rescheduled....

The Hook and ladder by the Giants when Troy stopped ? at the 4 yard line.

Damon Moore stopped Ron Dixon at the 6

This one was my first thought as well...

This one was crazy.  Doubt I'll ever forget it.

I was actually listening on the internet on NFL.com, I believe (back when it was free) and I was feeling pretty good because the Giants had to go 80 yards(?) in 7 seconds.  Anyway... when Tiki pitched the ball to Dixon, Quick says, "Uh-oh." and I drop to my knees because I have no idea if anyone is anywhere near him while he's streaking down the field.  Merrill's counting down the yardage and I just scream, "GET HIIIIIIIIIIIIM!!!" at the top of my lungs.  When they said that Dixon finally got tackled at the 4 yard line, I collapsed onto the floor flat on my back and tried to catch whatever breath I could.  Then Merrill says exactly what I was feeling... something like, "They'll take your breath away, but they're the NFC East Champs."

Unbelievable.

I remember that. Wasn't pretty if you were watching either. Probably alot worse because the camera just shows you the runner and not what's ahead of him. As soon as it was pitched, it was a foot race....I remember going from a smile and gradually feeling the soul sucked out of me...with only an empty relief at the end.(sounds alot like when I pleasure myself to kiddie porn). Anyways, go Eagles! :yay

I doubt I was the only one, I just have the balls to admit it. For the Tampa game I was damn near blacked out drunk so that doesn't really count.

Well, I didn't cry...but I was devastated.  That was brutal for me.  And I remember the whole thing so vividly.  At that point, I was sitting on my heels about two feet in front of my TV, primed to jump up in celebration...and then it fell apart.  Took me hours and hours to fall asleep.  Terrible.

That Bucs game didn't devastate me as much as the Rams game. I actually felt we had a chance against the Rams, but with the Bucs we were still 10 points behind with little time left. I just didn't get the feeling we'd win that game after the way we were playing. The Bucs game still hurt a lot though, but it wasn't the interception that ripped me up, it was the game as a whole, and the lost expectations.

But against the Rams we only needed 1 score to win us that game. I thought we'd pull it out. That interception ripped me up. The Panthers game was just anger. I wasn't devastated after that game, it was just pure anger at the receiving corps.

Good one Bunk.  I really thought we were going to pull that one off.  There was some bad play calling on that drive.  Draw to Staley that didn't fool anyone and I think DMac threw two passes  Freddies way the last being the interception.  What really pissed me off was that icehole Anus Williams manhandling Freddie on that fourth down play.  My god when they showed the replay he had his claws all over Freddie about 5 seconds before the ball got there.   I was more pissed that the clowns from FOX didn't say a word about it.
