Title: From the Vault #1 - Ty Detmer is a just a winner
Post by: MURP on May 08, 2006, 01:08:10 PM
Since this is usually the most boring time of the year for Eagles news (post minicamp) I've started a new series for our own version of "From the Vault."  I have a ton of old Eagles Digest which are collecting dust.  I decided it was time to digitize some stuff from them that might bring back good/bad memories.  Something that may have been painful then but may be funny now.   For part one I dug out the Eagles Digest that followed the Eagles victory over Dallas in which Willis intercepted and Vincent ran back for a TD.  Everyone has seen that many time and knows the story.  The better (funnier) part is the hype that followed Ty Detmer.

and some of the nasty stuff from the game.   :evil  (sorry if the type is a little small, trying to keep the file sizes down and the paper is old and bent up some)

In this issue there is even an article written by Merrill Reese that says Ty Detmer is just a winner.   :-D  If that article wasnt so big (took up an entire page) I would have attempted to scan it in for viewing.

Hope some of you enjoy the flashback, Ill be digging up other stuff very soon.

So is Detmer.

Merril Reese doesn't seem like the type to make outlandish positive claims about the Eagles.  I guess hindsight is 20/20.

:-D yeah right, I remember when Detmer played so well at the beginning it seemed like he was actually going to be a decent starter that obviously didn't last too long.  Then there was the Bobby Hoying Era that didn't last long either, thank god for McNabb.

funny you mention that.  We were looking at the cover of some of the older media guides during draft weekend and Lurie has the porno stache on the cover back to back years.  I dont remember the years offhand... maybe 1994 area.  In one, Lurie is by himself on the cover and on the other he is with Rhodes.    If they are not on the net somewhere Ill scan em in.

Thank God for McNabb.  The Detmer/Hoying hype is laughable now but was real at the time.  I was going through some of my old stuff and saw that the Eagles drafted Craig Erickson in 1991.  I remember he was pretty good in college at the U but I can't remember doing anything in the pros.  Did he fade away or an injury casualty?

the Hoying stuff is funny to think back about now.

i remember ABC's pre-season special that year and whole theme was that Bobby had the keys to the car that year.  how lame.

I have a copy of Reese's book 'Its GoooooD!", and there's a whole chapter devoted to Hoying.

I still see Hoying jerseys from time to time and always get a chuckle out of them.

If only because I thought he was going to be a great player for the Eagles and I nearly bought one myself.

:-D

If I recall Erickson actually looked pretty good in camp.  He ended up at Tampa and actually had one good season in 93 or 94.  I think he just faded away but he played about 8 years in the league.  I do remember that  he spent a year with the Colts.

91 - Cunningham, McMahon, Pat Ryan, Brad Goebel, Jeff Kemp

We sure could have used Erickson.  Missed the playoffs when Dallas came into the Vet and beat the birds.  Kemp started that game.  Beat the skins on a last second Ruzack FG the final week.

Something happened with the Eagles like they couldn't sign him right? He did have a good year or two in Tampa, then he faded and they drafted Dilfer.

Your right for some reason they could sign him and I think he re-entered the draft the following year.

Try to find an article from when the Eagles drafted Jon Harris, or Mike Mamula, or Bernard Williams.

I want to see the hype around them from way back yonder...

I was at that game!!

My friends dad got us primo seats. Like 12 rows up from the field. Just enough lift to see over the players heads and get a great view.

I had this old lady next to me with a goddamn cowbell that she kept ringing and ringing. I made a point to tell me friend loud enough that I thought senior citizens all had bad arthritis and if she didn't I hoped she got it soon.

Anyways, I still remember that play like it just happened. Zordich blitzed and Aikman had to try to move to find a target. He couldn't and Mullet Mike was closing in on him. He panics and tries to hit Moose and there's Whatchoo Talkin' 'Bout right there. Then he laterals to Troy and he has an escort of Ronnie Dixon (I think it was him) to the EZ.

The sound in the shteinhold stadium was priceless...silence. Except for the bursts of cheers from Eagles fans and me and my loudmouth screaming "I can't farging believe it!!"

It was around this time that my wife went out and bought me a Ty Detmer jersey.  Still have it tucked away someplace...it hasn't been worn much.
