Title: The Ultimate Fighter
Post by: Feva on April 23, 2006, 05:26:54 PM
Anyone ever watch it?  It comes on Thursday nights on Spike TV... this is the 3rd season and I'm damn near addicted to it.

16 MMA fighters from 2 different weight classes are put in a house, divided into 2 teams and are coached by 2 UFC professional fighters (This season:  Tito Ortiz (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=158) and Ken Shamrock (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=4)... who happen to hate each other, btw.)

Each week, 2 fighters are matched up to fight... the winner stays and the loser goes home.  In the end, the winners are given UFC contracts and end up fighting on the circuit.

Season 1 winners are: Forrest Griffin (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=3526) and Diego Sanchez (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=4824).

Season 2 winners are: Rashad Evans (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=10200) and Joe Stevenson (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=65).

Pretty damn good show.

I watch it when I remember.  I am more into the pay-per-view events.  This past one that was on wasn't very good but it is a lot of fun to get drunk and watch them with your buddies.

Def. a cool show.  Its just not the same without some of the new rules.  still fun to watch these guys pound the shtein out of each other.

I watch the show and love it.  Im liking the setup of Tito and Shamrock as the coaches.  Makes the subplot more interesting IMO.

Yeah it does.  Did you see the last episode where Tito was standing outside while Ross and Kendall were cutting weight at the gym... and Ken walks up and they don't say a word or even look at each other?

They need to just go ahead and put those two together again for the finale.

Btw... the UFC just had a PPV where Ortiz fought Forrest Griffin (season 1 winner) and Ortiz won in a close decision.  Heard it was a great fight.

yeah that was a great scene.   The league owner (cant remember his name) has to match Tito/Ken up after the season is over.   Just a brilliant marketing move to set up the rematch this way.   Im glad Poinson is out.  That dude was annoying as shtein.

I kinda like Ross.  I loved the part where him and the other british guy (Mike?) were arguing about the toliet being backed up.  :-D

He was an arrogant dude though... and the second they showed him not wanting to take anyone's advice, I knew he was gonna get stopped.

im interested in seeing how long this team "dagger" thing works with those two guys on opposite teams.  That could get real interesting and messed up if everyone else finds out they are giving each other info or it could be lame and turn into nothin.

I'm still trying to decide how good Solomon actually is.  He looks like he's tough as hell, but Shamrock pointed out that both his and Ross' "ground game sucks"... and we all saw how bad Ross' was when Kendall ran through him.  If Solomon's is similar to Ross' he could be in trouble.  Thing is though, right after Shamrock said that about Solomon, they cut to them talking on the side where Ken's telling him that "He could win this thing"... or something like that.

I'm looking forward to seeing him in the ring.  Kendall, the other half of "Team Dagger" turned out to be the real deal.

It was a great fight.  The only good fight of the pay-per-view really.  I think Griffen got jobbed, he easily won the last two rounds IMO.  You should take into account that I hate Tito Ortiz though.

its funny you say that, because I grew up watching Shamrock and I always thought Tito was a punk.  Now after just a few episodes of this season I am at a complete 180.  Shamrock is a douche.  Tito seems like a pretty cool dude.

Its not that I don't think he is a cool dude or anything, he seems fairly normal on the show.  The headgames (or whatever you want to call them) he plays leading up to fights just annoy the shtein out of me.

I'm the same way.  I always kinda liked Shamrock because he was really one of the first names I ever got to know associated with MMA (and partially because of his time in the WWF)... so he was cool with me.  I always thought of Ortiz as the flashy, prima donna type... but this show's already got me hoping that Ortiz kicks the shtein out of Shamrock by the time the season's over.

Tito seems pretty down to earth and a nice guy... just a nice guy you don't want to farg with.

another good episode.  Michael B was impressive in victory.  Unlike previous matches, I thought it was fairly predictable that Kristian was going to lose due to poor conditioning.

Just watched it.  Great episode.  I dunno... some of these guys you can just look at and for some reason you can just tell that they can go and Mike Bisping is one of them.  Mike was all over Kristian from the start and after he cut Kristian's head wide open... I knew it was over.

MURP...

Don't know if you caught the previews to next week's episode but it looks like that Ortiz/Shamrock truce is coming to a grinding halt.  I hope Tito kicks Ken's teeth down his throat.  Can't wait for next week.

oh hell yeah I did catch the preview.  I really hope they go at it right then and there... but it also looked like all the team members got in between them to break it up.   And we pray.

Can't tell you how many times I've thought of bumping this thread.

Yeah, I'm pulling for my boy Bisping in the light heavyweights.  I like Josh, but I think Mike has loads of potential in the UFC, IMO.  It was funny as hell when Dana was looking for someone to replace Matt in the semi-finals and Tait and Kristian turned him down... Dana says he "knows someone" who will definitely jump at the opportunity.  I honestly was stumped as Ross never entered my mind.  Then they just show him walking into the office.  He barely even let Dana get the question out before he was lik, "Let's do it, man!"  Good stuff.  :-D

Mike then commenced to kicking the shtein out of him, but hey... Ross caught him with a helluva shot in the beginning.

As far as the middleweights... I like both Kendall and Ed, but I guess a little more of me wants Kendall to pull it out.  Funny though... as much as they build Ed up as some kind of badass... he's looked alright, I guess... but I was expecting him to look better than he has.  I know that sounds funny since he submitted both guys he's fought, but he's had a pretty easy road to the finals by facing two of Tito's weakest guys.  Kendall really showed his skills by beating Kalib... I didn't think he would.  That was a great fight, btw.

Oh yeah... Kenny Florian was in the season 1 finals, but Diego Sanchez kicked his ass to take the title.

I'll tell you what, I've never ordered one of the UFC PPV's but I'm tempted as hell to order Ortiz/Shamrock 2... they were smart as hell to give Tito and Shamrock's feud some airtime on the show that leads up right to the PPV.  As ovbious a move that it was... I gotta admit, it's probably worked on me.  I can't wait for that.

Well the Tito/Shamrock fight was over way to quick.  Reminds me of the old Mike Tyson pay per views.   Looks like there may be a 3rd fight between them.  There better be.

I'm still not sure if it was stopped too soon. Shamrock was taking elbows a plently to his face apparently without defending himself, but I would have let him take a few more before calling it.

The fight between the Josh Burkett and Josh Neer was probably the best one.

technically the ref did the right thing.  5 big elbows to the head like that without defending yourself is reason to call the fight.  Cant blame the ref even though id have loved to see it go on knowing Shamrock has taken big punishment before and most likely wasnt hurt from the elbows.   Basically it just sucks for the fans.

how about the amount of blood in the first fight?  ha.

All of the fights were awful, the two main events were especially bad.  I understood why the ref stopped the fight but you could tell that Shamrock was not hurt.  The last fight was awful I expected much better.  I guess the biggest thing that came out of the fight was the potential Silva/Liddell fight that would be friggin sweet.

Yeah, I was kinda disappointed the way the Ortiz/Shamrock fight went.  I was set up to see a war and it was over before you knew it.

I can't fault Herb Dean for stopping it either though.  Like Tito said, it looked like after that 1st elbow, Shamrock went limp.  Tito just started raining down elbows on him and Shamrock wasn't defending them at all.  Had Dean let it keep going, Shamrock could have been really farged up.

The good news is that there's no way the two of them are gonna leave it like that so it's only a matter of time before they fight a third time.  They certainly hate each other enough to do it.

Also, the Sylvia/Arlovski fight was boring as hell.

How is that good news?  Shamrock's going to get his ass handed to him again - maybe this time it will take 5 or 10 minutes, but the man is obviously just too far past his prime to compete at the level he used to.

You answered your own question.

It's good news because I really look forward to Ken Shamrock getting his ass beat down.  I was disappointed with the fight because he got off easy while losing.

Yeah, it reminded me more of Ric Flair.  The bleached blond hair against the blood makes it so much better.  :yay

It looked like Edwin had a faucet on his head as much as he was bleeding.  I laughed my ass off when he was on top of the guy... catching his blood with one hand... raining elbows with the other.  :-D
