Could veteran defensive tackle Ed Jasper return to where his career started?
Jasper, who was with the Eagles from 1997-98, is visiting the NovaCare Complex on Thursday to meet with coaches and team officials. He will meet the media later this afternoon and that press conference will be part of Eagles Live! at 3:30 p.m.
Jasper (6-2, 295) spent last season with the Oakland Raiders. He played in 12 games and recorded 24 tackles and a pair of sacks. Jasper spent most of his career with the Atlanta Falcons in their 3-4 defense. He was the starter at nost tackle against the Eagles in the 2004 NFC Championship.
The former sixth-round pick of the Eagles was a standout at Texas A&M. In his three seasons there, he posted 147 tackles and 11.5 sacks.
The only exciting news here is that this could mean they are in the process of trading Hollis...
Man, this is a slow offseason........
I guess a good way at looking at this is the Eagles, at the very least, are addressing the need at that position. Regardless if its just depth or not...or as RJS said...a trade for Hollis. $htein, keep loading em up
they have enough depth there...they need a frontline guy now

dude over on the EMB said he lives in Milwaukee, and mentioned Grady Jackson is a free agent and the fans are screaming for depth at LT over there in a big way. Could be a package brewing....
Jasper's a better option than Hollis Thomas, or Brentson Buckner, for that matter.
P.S. Obviously, Jasper in the middle gobbling up double-teams was obviously the reason Burgess had so much success in Oakland. Obviously.

Another 1-yr deal, vet minimum
I don't get that at all. He's good enough to get a better contract with another team isn't he? Why would he sign here for nothing and no chance of significant playing time? Ugh.
probably because they told him he'd be the 4th tackle in the rotation, spelling doom for Hollis and Rayburn. assuming they draft somebody, sometime.
Hollis is gone but who will trade for a guy that they know will be released? Well, other than the Texans...
murp needs to start a new offseason grades thread.
He's not really good enough or at the age to do much better. He already has considered retirement. Basically, he's a guy who can shoot the gap and play pretty well with limited snaps, so he thought coming here to be the #4 DT and actually play a little bit was better than going elsewhere to be the #4 DT and not see the field, or be the #3 DT and see too many snaps to be productive.
It's a decent depth move. Jasper makes some plays.
god is the DT position a clusterfarg
how do you let it get to this point
especially when its one of your 'value' positions
you don't pay Corey Simon?
Plus doesn't this indicate that they won't be drafting a DT? Or if they do, who is the other DT to go? Walker? Rayburn? I don't get it.
I think this points to them trading Hollis to GB in a deal for Javon Walker...

It's not. They value DE and CB well above DT in this defense.
Anyway, I think that Hollis Thomas is as good as gone (released or traded), and Rayburn will be fighting for a roster spot with Keyonta Marshall....
#1 Patterson
#2 D. Walker
#3 Marshall/Rayburn
#4 Jasper
#5 draft pick
I guess the signing of Jasper pretty much signals that I'll lose my bet with Phreak.
Walker
Patterson
Jasper
Bunkley
Sounds like a pretty decent rotation to me.

I think that that is wishful thinking at its finest.

It's more likely that he'll just be released.
the bottom line is...
Chris McPhereson leads a very boring life.
As much as we make fun of Dave, realize that Chris McPherson is Dave's underling. So, he's even lamer, technically.
Still think something else is brewing here.
Why the hell would McPherson get excited about a fourth DT being signed? Not even he's that pathetic.

I'd love to believe you're right, but I think it's more likely than this is it.
If this is it then he was either drunk or extremely high when he wrote that blog passage.
...or he doesn't give a F about the schedule release...
I agree that this probably spells the end of the Hollis Thomas era, I think if they add another guy through the draft though this position should be relatively solid.
in what world does hollis thomas have trade value

Good question.

He has value as a throw-in and nothing more. The Packers could use him, and the Eagles could use to get rid of him.

yeah, except Bunkley wasnt drafted yet. :P
You know Rayburn is going to be in the rotation.

You are willing to write him off so quickly after one bad season?
i think the fact that Rayburn is in the mix is terrible
I was writing off the 'sir mix a lot' nonsense. It was terrible. D-.
D-Minus is an extremely generous grade.
I wish I had you as my statistics professor in college.

i dont think so. they have spent two 1st round picks (one top 10) on a DT in their tenure.
that shows they value it highly.
This move makes no sense unless they're moving Hollis.
Hollis > Jasper
Wishful thinking, but I'm hoping this move sets up the original Hollis and a 3rd to GB to be true. There's no incentive for GB to ship him to us for our third when they can get a lower round third from the Niners. Hollis + our 3rd would be better compensation. Rip away.

A picture of the moment Hollis got herpes doesn't count.

Jasper is better than Hollis. Plus Hollis is on his way out. He's demanded to be traded twice and they are not getting anything for him. So he'll be cut. And so will Paul Grasmanis.
And why are some of you acting like Rayburn won't be here?
Walker
Patterson
Rayburn
Jasper
Draft Pick
And FF will owe me another $10. :)

Well, that play was sweet.
But I like Jasper as a rotational guy. And he's not salty like Hollis has been the last two years.
Once we get Bunkley the DT rotation will be sweet. ;D
A little birdy told me Bunkley will go 8th to the Bills. You heard it here first. If we could somehow nab him though I'd be thrilled.
from Spads:
Ed Jasper? Where did he come from? Actually, the Eagles have been keeping tabs on Jasper for some time. He was a sixth-round pick of the Eagles in what was an underrated 1997 draft -- one that produced linebacker James Darling (still in the league) barely, running back Duce Staley (still in the league) barely, Kalu (still in the league) and Koy Detmer (still in the league) barely.
Jasper gives the Eagles more depth and competition at defensive tackle. He's going to challenge Paul Grasmanis, Keyonta Marshall, Hollis Thomas, Sam Rayburn, Darwin Walker and Mike Patterson. Should Jasper play as well as he thinks he can, he'll win a job and get some snaps and give the Eagles some push and effort and a strong body inside for however many snaps the Eagles give him (15? 20?) each week.
jeeze, any less snaps and maybe we shouln't have paid him that $40,000 signing bonus.

I've got a feeling that Buffalo will be all over Winston Justice. They need OL help in a bad way.

I agree with SD I think Bunkley is going to go to Buffalo, he fits the scheme they are putting in up there.
If Bunkley goes before the Eagles pick, we can forget about them taking a tackle with their first pick. They won't take Ngata even if he swaps positions with Bunkley as the top DT and falls to the 14th pick. The guy just doesn't fit their philosophy.

Nice, Spads. Way to talk up that draft. Wanna tell us how Antone Davis was a solid pick too?
Making a big deal about Dave being a homer is the superest fun time of all! Let's do!
That's downright Art like homerism. Even for Dave.
Wrong. It's normal Dave homerism from Dave.
making fun of dave never gets old......and never will
I respectfully disagree, FF. Saying Koy, James Darling and ND Kalu was an underrated draft is laughable, even by Dave's standards.
Dave's standards are already lower than you're giving him credit for.
