Moulds granted permission to seek trade
Associated Press
Posted: 29 minutes ago

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Eric Moulds has the Buffalo Bills' permission to seek a trade, the latest step for the veteran receiver who asked for his release after repeatedly rejecting the team's demands to take a pay cut.

"We are shopping Eric," Moulds' personal adviser, Greg Johnson, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "Obviously, we would much rather have Eric released. But if we can work out a trade, we will. But if not, we're back to Square 1 and Eric won't play for the Bills. He doesn't want to play for them, and he will not play for them."

Johnson said several teams already have expressed interest in Moulds since the Bills granted their permission on Friday. Without providing details, he added, the team has set parameters on what it would seek in return in a potential trade.

"It's moving forward to a degree and we anticipate something happening," Johnson said.

Moulds, a 10-year veteran and the Bills' senior player, has two years left on his contract, but was scheduled to count about $10.8 million against the salary cap next year. The Bills deem that figure too expensive but have failed in their bid to have the receiver restructure his contract.

Moulds, who is scheduled to make $7.1 million next season, has rejected the Bills' demands, believing there are other teams willing to match the salary.

Speaking earlier in the day, Bills general manager Marv Levy only hinted that the team has granted Moulds' representatives permission to seek a trade by saying: "I think they might examine the field and find that maybe that is the thing to do."

Levy also maintained the team's interest in keeping Moulds, but only if he agrees to a pay cut.

"I still think he has playing ability," Levy said. "But I don't think we can fill all of our other needs with the type of salary cap hit we have to take with him."

Buffalo would save about $5.5 million in salary cap space by releasing Moulds. The Bills have been active in the first week of free agency, signing nine free agents including four of their own players.

Among the players signed include two receivers, Andre' Davis, a four-year NFL veteran who played for New England last season, and Josh Reed, who spent the past four seasons in Buffalo.

The Bills, however, could use additional cap space to address their most immediate need in bolstering their offensive line.

Moulds was Buffalo's first-round pick in the 1996 draft and has been a full-time starter since his third season. In 154 games, he has 675 catches for 9,096 yards and 48 touchdowns. Only Andre Reed has more catches (941) and yards (13,095) among Bills receivers

Please FO! At least make a run at this dude.

Moulds/Brown/Gaffney/Lewis/draft pick doesn't leave room for Pinkston unless they carry 6 WR's, which they won't.

You guys can dream, but the Eagles are probably drafting a WR and probably not adding Moulds.

I agree.  He won't restructure for the Bills so I doubt he will for the Eagles.  And the Eagles won't pay him 7.1 million since everything is about money to the Eagles materialistic and shallow FO.

Why would they spend a draft pick on WR after getting Moulds and Gaffney?

Moulds
Brown
Gaffney
Pinkston
Lewis
McCants-McMullen-McJunk spot that will rarely be used

....or you can offer Pinkston to the Texans or Saints for a mid-round pick...

Saw this over on PhilliesPhans: a statistical website, FootballOutsiders.com, ranks Moulds as the 56th-best WR in the NFL (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/wr.php).  The highest-ranked current Eagle WRs are Gaffney at #74 and Brown at #78....

Something I noticed about that site.... Moulds' rankings compared to top WR teammates at the time:

#56 in 2005 (Josh Reed was #48 and Lee Evans was #50)
#45 in 2004 (Evans was #14)
#54 in 2003 (Bobby Shaw was #27)
#55 in 2002 (Peerless Price was #15 and Reed was #50)
#70 in 2001 (Price was #41)
#17 in 2000

That's one of the issues with interpreting stats.  Does this indicate that Moulds sucks, or do we say that he was matched against top CBs and double teams, allowing his teammates to get the better opportunities?
Title: Re: Moulds given permission to seek trade.
Post by: Feva on March 22, 2006, 05:41:53 AM
It's absolutely the latter... I've watched Moulds his entire career and the guy has consistently been a top 10 WR in this league.  He's made life easy for every single WR he's played with by having coverage rolled his way and allowing that #2 guy to inflate his stats.  Peerless Price has shown absolutely dick since he left Moulds and has had to deal with #1 attention... and Moulds has been benefitting Lee Evans the last couple years as well.  Evans will find out for sure how valuable Moulds still is next year when he's the focal point of the passing offense.

Besides... not shteinting on the website or anything, but does anyone really think that there are 55 WR's in the NFL better than Moulds... or even 77 better than Reggie?  In Brown's case that would basically mean that every team in the league has at least 2 WRs better than him.

Get Moulds.  Seriously.

You guys can dream, but the Eagles are probably drafting a WR and probably not adding Moulds.

Adding Moulds and Gaffney can eliminate the need for drafting a WR early.. or at all in this year's draft.  Gaffney can serve as the young WR instead of a draft pick to grow along with Brown to be our set for the future (assuming they get Gaffney signed for more than 1 year).  He just turned 25 three months ago.  Moulds can still come in and provide the stability to the WR corps, keep chains moving and be they guy that helps mature Reggie until he's definitely ready to shine.  Then when Moulds steps aside in a year or two... Brown and Gaffney are your guys, with draft pick pushing for time.

This way, what do you lose?

I can agree with that.

Not that he'd play for the minimum or anything, but I think that his refusal to take a pay cut has more to do with him getting out of Buffalo than wanting to keep playing for the big money.

I keep getting distracted by hunt's avatar, and I can't think how to further respond to this thread.

Anyway, the Eagles want to have the freedom to draft a WR early and not cut their boy Greg Lewis, so they will not go out and trade for and then pay Eric Moulds.  It's simply not going to happen.  It's not even worth mentioning if I'd want it to happen or not.

one of the espn nfl "experts" (i can't remember which one) was on espn radio this morning & said the same teams rumored to be interested in meshawn (pats, giants, panthers, etc) will most likely be interested in moulds...and there's a chance teams will wait to see if moulds is a june 1 cut.

It sounds like the Eagles could very easily wait until after the draft.  If they don't end up with a WR from the first day (hence, a guy who they need to give a roster spot to), then they can make a deal with the Bills before June 1... or just wait until June 1 and "see how things go".

Moulds won't be an Eagle until at least after the draft, if at all.  My take.

No doubt... if Moulds goes elsewhere people will be screaming about how much somebody overpaid for him.

Of course, that team's WR corps would have gotten better and ours will still be one step above primate ass, but it's all good since we didn't overpay for anyone.
Title: Re: Moulds given permission to seek trade.
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on March 22, 2006, 10:54:00 AM
I will go on the record now as saying that I think the Eagles should talk trade with the Bills, but ONLY so they can have a chance to get an idea of Moulds' contract demands.  I do not believe the Eagles should trade for Moulds, because the Bills will cut him eventually.  I do believe the Eagles should be willing to sign him to a deal of no longer than 2-3 years in actual likely-to-be-seen time (ie: Darren Howard's deal is really only a 3-year deal unless he defies age completely).  But if he wants an average of $7 million a year, no way in hell.

Some of you are right... as a fan, I shouldn't care about the money.  But other players do, and when the likes of Reggie Brown and Jabar Gaffney see the Eagles pay a WR on the downside of his career that kind of cake, they are not going to be too happy about their contracts at all.

I don't think Moulds is good enough to warrant any division in the locker room or issues amongst the younger guys.  He deserves no more than $5m/year on average.
Title: Re: Moulds given permission to seek trade.

For shteins and giggles... what would you offer him?
Title: Re: Moulds given permission to seek trade.
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on March 22, 2006, 11:02:58 AM
$5m signing bonus, $1m roster bonus March '07, $3m roster bonus March '08, $4m roster bonus March '09.
$1m salary for 2006, $3m salary for 2007, $3.5m salary for 2008, $5m salary for 2009.

The press could report it as a 4-year deal for $25.5m with $13m in guarantees, but it's really only probably a 2-year, $10m deal.

The simple solution is to get both Moulds and Keshawn. Say goodbye to Pinky, Wilbur, and Greggie. Let those four remaining similarly-adequate receivers battle it out for the first three spots, and draft a WR just for the hell of it.

QuoteBills | Eight teams interested in Moulds
Fri, 24 Mar 2006 10:41:52 -0800

Frank Schwab, of the Colorado Springs Gazette, reports eight teams have shown interest in free agent WR Eric Moulds (Bills). However, Greg Johnson, Moulds' personal adviser, said working out a trade will be difficult because both the Bills and Moulds' new team would have to agree on draft pick compensation. The team would likely want to work out a new contract before trading for him as well.

Are the Eagles one of the 8?

Reid: Hey there, it's Andy Reid from the Eagles.

Agent: Good to hear from you coach. Are you interested in acquiring a proven, veteran playmaker for McNabb to throw to?

Paul Domowitch has an article in today's philly.com (sorry I tried to go back to the article, but philly.com is having problems at the moment):

1. Moulds has said he wants to play for the Eagles--in particular, he wants to play alongside McNabb.

2. His agent has had discussions with the Eagles.

3. Buffalo wants a 2ND DAY PICK for him.

4. Moulds, however, wants a 3 year deal worth 15M. One unnamed GM has said that he doesn't think ANY team would pay him that much.

Agent: Moulds wants to play for Eagles

By PAUL DOMOWITCH
pdomo@aol.com

ORLANDO, Fla. - Eric Moulds has a wish list of five teams he'd like to play for, and guess who's at the tippy-top of it?

That's right. The Eagles.

"Every time I mention Philadelphia, Eric's ears perk up," said Greg Johnson, who represents the 32-year-old Bills wide receiver along with his partner, Harry Henderson. "He wants to go to Philadelphia. He really feels he could help them. He loves the idea of being an Eagle and playing with Donovan [McNabb]."

Moulds wants out of Buffalo, and the Bills, who will have to pay him $7.1 million in salary and bonuses this year if he's on the team, are only too happy to oblige him. They have put the word out that he can be had for a second-day pick in next month's draft.

But don't start visualizing him in an Eagles uniform quite yet.

Johnson said he talked to Eagles president Joe Banner last week. He said there is "some interest" in Moulds by the Eagles, which an organization source also acknowledged.

But as much as Moulds would love to catch passes from McNabb, he is not interested in doing it for free, or anything close to free.

According to a source from one of the five teams on Moulds' wish list, which also includes New Eng-land, Seattle, Kansas City and Denver, the wide receiver is looking for a contract similar to the one Isaac Bruce signed with the St. Louis Rams 2 weeks ago.

Bruce, who is a year older than Moulds, signed a 3-year, $15 million contract with the Rams on March 10. He had been released by the team a few days earlier, before the league agreed to a new labor extension with the players that significantly increased the salary cap.

Moulds has as much chance of getting a $5 million-a-year deal from the Eagles as Saddam Hussein does of getting an acquittal. Whether he'll get it from anyone else remains to be seen.

"Right now, the money aspect is out of whack," said one league general manager. "If he wants to get traded, he's going to have to come to grips that he's not going to get that. Or maybe he will. Maybe there's a team that's willing to pay him that."

One league source indicated that there may be - the Houston Texans. But the Texans won just two games last season, which isn't exactly a great place for a wideout with Super Bowl aspirations and a ticking biological clock to go.

Johnson confirmed that the Texans have expressed interest in Moulds. "They're very interested," he said. "There are other teams in the mix as well. We're going to play it by ear. We'll see what happens."

Since catching 100 passes for 1,292 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2002, Moulds' pass-catching production has dropped off significantly. He has just 10 touchdown catches and has averaged only 77.6 catches per year the last three seasons, though the poor offensive talent around him, particularly at quarterback, has had more than a little to do with that.

Johnson said Moulds has spoken recently with McNabb. He said the two have been friends for 5 or 6 years.

"Eric would like nothing better than to play with Donovan," he said. "He said he was looking forward to going out to Arizona and training with him [if he's traded to the Eagles]."

TEXANS IN THE HUNT FOR MOULDS

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans are interested in swinging a trade with the Bills for disgruntled receiver Eric Moulds.

"We're exploring an opportunity for Eric to play for the Texans," said Greg Johnson, who works for Moulds but really isn't his agent. "If all sides can see eye to eye, we'll make it happen."

To make it happen, the Texans and Moulds need to work out a contract, and the Texans and the Bills likewise need to hammer out a trade.

The Bills reportedly want a fourth-round draft pick.

We'll see what you say about it when he goes elsewhere and you see what contract he signs.  My best guess is that you'll suckle at the teet of Banner and Reid once again.

Only 17?  Have they traded some already?

Unless they're hard after Walker, a 4th (and a renegotiation) for Moulds seems perfectly logical to me.

The odds of the Eagles going out to get Moulds aren't great given their MO...but, man, I wish they'd do it.  If he want's to play here, maybe he'd settle for $4 mil a year for a couple of years.  I mean, why the hell not?  It's not like they're looking like they're going to do a whole hell of a lot better using cap room they have.

Assuming Brown doesn't have a sophmore slump, that's very solid.  Factor in Westbrook, LJ and Shoebel...and those are some legitimate receiving options.

The way I look at it is like this:

Moulds is completely unexciting and definitely not worth whatever money he's looking for, but he upgrades the team in two ways. First, he's a better, more experienced, more polished receiver than the Eagles have right now, so he cans tep into the number one role and produce solid if unspectacular numbers. And second, he can play for a year or two, and allow Reggie Brown to learn and not be tossed face first into the role of #1. In other words Get moulds. And overpay for him if necessary. They've got a shteinton of cash to play with for god's sake.

PS: It won't happen.

Basically the same stuff but it is from a Buffalo paper:

QuoteMoulds has his eye on Eagles
By MARK GAUGHAN
News Sports Reporter
3/27/2006

Eric Moulds' representative says the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in his client, and the feeling is mutual.
"Eric has a wish list of teams, and a lot of those teams on his list are interested," said Greg Johnson, Moulds' New Orleans-based advisor. "I'm optimistic we can work something out that will be acceptable to the Bills."

The Eagles have had discussions with Moulds' advisors in the past week, since the Bills granted permission to Moulds to seek a trade. Johnson said Moulds has talked on the phone with Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. An Eagles source told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the team would be interested at the right price for Moulds.

"Several teams are in the mix," Johnson said. "I think Philly would be a good place for Eric."

New England, Kansas City, Denver and Houston are other teams Johnson identified as having interest.

Johnson said any deal would require the Bills to accept a draft-pick compensation as well as Moulds striking a new contract with the team that acquires him. A pick of the second day of the draft is probably what another team would offer in a trade.

It would change my excitement level significantly, but not the grade. They still don't have a FB or TE or RB who can pass protect. They still don't have a decent OLB. They still have no depth at DT. He's an upgrade for the WRs no doubt. And I would be thrilled to have him be an Eagle, but there are still big holes that need to be filled.

in an NFL where money wouldn't be the deciding factor, Moulds would be coming to Philly, but its sad to say our FO is mennonite and wouldn't give him what he wants.  farg we have all the $ in the world.  Its instant number 1 WR.  We have to have one of the worst WR group in the league.  Its pretty embarrasing when the Gints, Foreskins and CowRomes all have a way better receiving corps that us.

i agree.  some of you people are acting like taterskins fans.  you're not going to pick up a star player at every position in one offseason.  now granted, i've been one of the people calling our FO cheap so far, but if we get Moulds, we resigned Runyan, picked up a quality DE and an upgrade at WR, a servicable backup QB and TE, I'd call it a pretty good FA season so far.  Except for the TO/Freak signings, the best in recent memory.

Adding Howard, Jethy, Barber, Schoebel & Gaffney plus retaining the Wildebeast = solid B+ for me.

If they score Moulds, it's an A-.

I still want a dominant DT added but if they address the WR position first, adding a DT from the draft should be easily do-able.

I'll post the re-cap from his agent's interview on WIP here too:

- Moulds would be pretty excited to catch balls from Donovan. Who wouldn't be?

- Eric and Donovan are good friends. They have been for several years.

- Greg Johnson has been talking to Joe Banner and there is MAJOR INTEREST on both parts.

- It will take both parties to agree to terms and he is not going out on a limb to say that a deal can be done because both parties want to get one done.

- Moulds will be willing to renegotiate his contract if he is traded here, but not in Buffalo. (this would be if he is traded here)

- There is no leader as far as the Chiefs, Texans and Eagles but Eric is more excited to play with Donovan.

- There will be several reason he takes into consideration. The Eagles have an edge because of Donovan, Andy Reid and the great organization. Houston would be because it is close to Mississippi

- What happened in Buffalo was unfortunate and the fact that his consecutive streak of catches was stopped kind of started the bad taste in his mouth. Plus the amount of QBs, head coaches and offensive coordinators and not winning in Buffalo caused him to want to leave.

- This contract is not going to be based on structly money because Eric has been rewarded nicely by the Bills. He wants fair market value but it will not be all about money.

- No timetable, but it could happen by THIS WEEKEND or maybe as long as two weeks depending on the situations.

- Eric is not due any bonuses so June 1st doesn't come into play. He is due a bonus on the first date of TC. So that doesn't matter because he will not play there.

- Philadelphia would be a great situation and so would Houston but Eric really wants an opportunity to win.

- Really thinks Eric will be a good fit here and he is excited about possibly coming here. Really wants to play with Donovan.

- He has spoken to Joe Banner THREE TIMES TODAY

Interview over.

It must have been opposite day in heaven.  Or a really cruel April Fool's Day prank by Jebus.

A real hillbilly doesn't use a shop.  He uses cinder blocks.  And a broken TV.

Moulds in the fold for Texans
Finalizing deal, team gives Bills fifth-round pick

Since last season ended, veteran receiver Eric Moulds wondered where he would play in 2006. Tuesday afternoon, Moulds heard the answer he wanted.

The Texans and Buffalo Bills finally agreed on compensation, and Moulds became the Texans' starting receiver opposite Andre Johnson. To finalize the deal, the Texans gave the Bills their fifth-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Moulds, 32, who has spent his entire 10-year career in Buffalo, said he is ready for a fresh start with the Texans. He spent the past two days at Reliant Stadium with his agent/attorney Harry Henderson and his personal adviser Greg Johnson.

Much of their time was spent talking with coach Gary Kubiak and also with Andre Johnson. Moulds is a three-time Pro Bowler; Johnson has made one trip in three seasons.

"To play alongside Andre Johnson is going to make it easier on both of us," said Moulds, 6-2 and 210 pounds. "It looks good on paper, but now we have to do something on the field."

With Dan Ferens, Texans vice president of football administration, handling the negotiations, the Texans worked out a deal last week that will pay Moulds $14 million over four years. It includes a $5 million signing bonus.

"He is going to be a terrific complement to Andre," Kubiak said. "He's very competitive. I love his work ethic.

"He's going to help the young guys understand what it takes to be productive in this league for a long time. I'm impressed with what he wants to accomplish over the rest of his career."

The only delay in the trade came when the Texans discussed compensation with the Bills, who were asking for a fourth-round pick. That was worked out Tuesday, and the Bills will have the first pick in the fifth round.

Moulds is ready to start over after a decade in Buffalo, which started going downhill about five years ago. The Bills' passing game became one of the worst in the NFL, and the quarterbacks were playing musical chairs.

"It's tough because it limits your abilities," Moulds said. "But I have great memories. It was just frustrating playing with so many different quarterbacks. You just had to keep adjusting. It's not like that here. David Carr is the quarterback, and he's going to be here the whole time. I just have to adjust to him."

Despite having two years left on his contract, Moulds wasn't shy in his desire to leave Buffalo. His base salary next season was going to be $7.1 million, and the Bills wanted to restructure it for salary-cap reasons. But their attempts failed, which is why Moulds was granted the opportunity to seek a trade.

Even though he joins a team that wound up last season ranked 30th out of 32 teams in passing offense and finished 2-14, Moulds is upbeat.

"I thought this team was just two or three players away from doing something good," he said. "Now I'm here, and they've made other changes. In this league, every year is different. In this day and age of free agency, teams can change quickly. I think we're going to do that."

In other transactions, the Texans signed free-agent linebacker Wali Rainer, 28, and receiver Jake Schifino, 26.

Rainer, 6-2 and 240, played in 16 games and started five for the Detroit Lions last season. He was a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 1999.

Schifino, 6-1 and 201, has played in 14 games since being taken in the fifth round of the 2002 draft by the Tennessee Titans.

Phew, I thought his price would be reasonable. But if they had to give up a FIFTH? That's just crazy.

So, the Eagles could have traded the 4th from Indy and gotten him... probably.

He sucks anyway.  Go Jabar.
