Eagles | Team to sign Schobel
Sat, 11 Mar 2006 11:25:25 -0800

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports a source told the Enquirer free agent TE Matt Schobel (Bengals) will sign an undisclosed contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Schobel played four seasons with the Bengals.

This was supposed be the Eagles' big free agency year and they have no scheduled visits on the first day but a TE.

Meanwhile every other team out there is improving their team with big names flying in.  :boom

QuoteTight end Matt Schobel will sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, a source told the Enquirer this afternoon.

Schobel played four seasons with the Bengals. He had 18 receptions for 193 yards and one touchdown in 2005 and played, at times, as a blocking H-back in shot-gun passing formations.

Schobel had 90 receptions, nine for touchdowns, in four seasons in Cincinnati.

This is so much better than getting Vernon Davis or any of the top 6 prospects at that spot...  ::)

I tried to blow off steam. Do some yard work. Worked out..... 10 days of free agency blue balls and according to Spads, nothing planned either. I think I entered the twilight zone.   :paranoid

Anyhow, 40 mg of Valium & Yuengling should start to relieve the pain for me.

All I'll say is, since I don't have season tickets, I buy tickets for games when they go on sale - or at least try to.

If the Eagles don't make a big splash in free agency next year I'm not going to buy tickets. They won't deserve my money. They were supposed to be the big player this offseason, and so far they are the most quiet team out there.

Looks like I'll be going to a number of games this year with the bandwagon fans jumpin off cause we didn't sign anyone less than 16 hours into free agency.

I'm not jumping off the bandwagon. I still love the team, but I'm not going to dish out the big bucks, unless they have something to show for it at the end of free agency.

I'm not talking about right now. I'm just angry and I'm venting. I'm beside myself right now, and I'm sober right now so the anger is showing even more.

We had to get a backup TE somewhere.  I'm glad to have him on board.

Here's the link to his info at STATS.com:

http://snap.stats.com/stats/nflinfo/playerstats.asp?id=5953&Submit=Go

He is 6'5, 260.  Workout numbers from his Pro Day prior to the Draft:

4.75 in the 40
34.5 VJ
10.0 BJ

Pretty good athlete.  Similar player to Chad Lewis.  Good rcvr, marginal blocker, good size.

I understand the frustration with the Bentley debacle and the desire to get an impact guy in here.
Title: Re: Our 1st Big Signing !!
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on March 11, 2006, 04:50:12 PM
I don't like it. >:(

If they were going to get another TE it had to be either a phenominal player (Davis) or an outstanding blocker. Schobel is neither.

I believe our old buddy Tony Stewart was taking playing time away from this gem of a player.

I gotta disagree with ya Phreak.

I'm fine with LJ as the starter.  I wanted a good backup.  A good blocker would have been nice if we were a running team.  We're not.  We pass the ball 60% of the time.  We need a backup TE who can catch the ball.  Matt fills that need.

If Vernon is available, I think Reid will find a way to carry 4 TEs on the roster.   ;D

I took last years in stride. This year is going to cause me to harden my liver to epic proportions. What I am hoping for is that they scoop up Peterson and a DT like tomorrow. That would make me happy.

A proven blocking TE was very high on my list of things to get this off season. It could have been done next week rather than today, and it certainly doesn't lessen the sting of the Bentley debacle, but now its done and it helps the team. And it lessens the chances of them drafting a TE in the first round. Which makes me happy.

No offense Rjs, but Schobel is hardly a "proven blocking TE". His blocking is marginal. He's a solid receiver though.

I am angry about the possibility of no Bentley and no Runyan.

McNabb would have absolutely no time to work with and our running game well would still suck, but that's not the point.  McNabb may be a little injury prone and we can't risk it.  Get Donovan the best protection we can period.

Here's what a poster from the EMB pulled from the Sporting News scouting report on Schoebel.

QuoteRanked him #25 TE (LJ Smith was #11)

6-5 257 Age 26

Strengths:Has a nice combination of size and speed. Shows initial quickness off the snap and can avoid jams and get into routes.

Weaknesses: Is a liabitity as a blocker. Lacks upper and lower body strength. Plays too high in the running game and consistently gets out-leveraged.

Bottom Line: Schobel is a one dimensional TE who must be accounted for on passing downs.

Hell yeah.

Then the Philly media can ask Big Red why they are trotting this guy out there and not someone worth a shtein. And then Mark Eckel can get some more inside info and we'll have another bogus story on Monday. Yay!

Even though I am pissed that this guy:
a. eliminates the possibility of Vernon Davis
b. isn't a great blocker

He could still be a decent addition provided they do something else. He will help in the RZ. And he ain't no Stephen Spach...which is good.

I'll just say that I am one big name signing away from totally losing it.

If one of Hutchinson, Bernard, or Howard get signed by someone, I'm seriously going to lose it. I can't believe this mother farging team has the FARGING BALLS, to not do SHTEIN so far. Where do they get the balls?

Where do they get the farging balls to finish 6-10 and give us a backup TE and nothing else on day one with no visits? farg them. The more I think about it the more steamed I get.

It's incomprehensible.

Thing is... we've been waiting for this farging day really since McNabb went down.  We watched the rest of that zesty ass season knowing that we'd get a chance to get back to the top where we should be.  A few days before, word gets out that we got a STUD that's gonna be the 1st step of putting 2005 to rest and moving ahead.  We had to wait even longer through all that CBA bullshtein... but we knew that good shtein was coming.

We waited for MONTHS for this day... and were expecting LeCharles Bentley, 2 time Pro-Bowler with a farging mean streak... and we got... Matt... farging... Schoebel.  A 2nd TE who can't block to save his life to compliment or 1st TE who can't block to save his life.

This was a zesty farging day... no doubt about it.  farg this, I'm getting off this damn computer... and I'm done with football for the night because if I keep looking, I'm gonna see that somebody else we wanted signed somewhere else and I'm just gonna get even more heated.

I'll catch you cats tomorrow....

Good idea. It's nice outside, I'm going to go hit the basketball courts for a couple hours.

I swear to god, if I come on tomorrow and we still have no visits, the Eagles are even more of a joke than Ed Wade and the Phillies. Yes, I mean that.

I can't imagine how mad I'll be tomorrow if there is still no word, but I have a gut feeling that I'll come on tomorrow and still no scheduled visits. What a joke it's going to be.

Jesus you guys need to get a grip.  This isn't even surprising, is it?  Especially with the "How can they do this to the fans?"  I thought you idiots knew they didn't give a rat's ass about us.  I think Reid and Co. want to win, I really do.  But not for us.  And if they think they can do it with the guys they have, they'll try.

Aren't you the same bunch of guys spouting "They deserve the benefit of the doubt"?  All it took was one below .500 season to cure that.  And a lot of booze.

Hey...at least he's cheap. :-\

Yeah, ridiculously so.  In fact, he's so cheap that I don't think it eliminates the possibility of getting any other TE.  In the meantime, the Eagles have an NFL-caliber backup to L.J. on the roster (unlike James Whalen last year), and they can consider case closed until the draft.  The Eagles could still take a TE if he's at the top of their board after the 1st or 2nd round, but they don't HAVE to.

I don't like it. >:(

If they were going to get another TE it had to be either a phenomenal player (Davis) or an outstanding blocker. Schobel is neither.
I believe our old buddy Tony Stewart was taking playing time away from this gem of a player.
I'll go further. I hate it. Back-up in Cincy- what a fantastic credential that is. We need a much above average blocker to help max protect our increasingly injured QB, especially since we have a very poor fullback and the fact besides Westbrook, none of our RBs can pick up a blitz. It'll be a miracle if McNabb lasts long this season.

true but Mcnabb was hurt in preseason.  I agree i'm all for gettin a TE in the draft like a Byrd from SC.  Sign Schobel but make sure the deal is front loaded.

I was thinking that Schobel wouldn't be place holder here, because they would rather have a more qualified guy out there for fake field goals and stuff, but the more I thought about it, he's probably has a better arm and is more accurate than Detmer.

So maybe he will be our holder.

Again, the thing that's telling to me is that they didn't give Howard all of his up-front money as a roster bonus.  If they seriously didn't plan on using their 2006 cap room, then why prorate that money, when you can have it all hit in 2006?  After all, it's the same $$$ to Howard and the same $$$ from Lurie either way.

I just don't get it.  They could have taken a $10.5m cap hit for Howard, but they took less than $4m.  WTF?

John Runyan would be my guess.  And they had to make sure they had enough cash around to re-up Reno.  The team would have been doomed to failure with out him.

And why might that be?

he was the best FA TE available and will be a perfect compliment to lj by taking some of the burden off him by giving him less snaps...hes a big boy and  will be a nice target for donovan...i expect him to be real successful inside the ten....wouldnt be surprised to see him get 6-7 td's this year
Title: Re: Our 1st Big Signing !!
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on March 14, 2006, 09:14:41 AM
That's funny and all, but my question is a serious one.  The Eagles are staring at no less than $25 million in 2006 cap space after Owens is cut today.  Even if they sign Runyan and escalate his entire bonus to 2006, they're still at no less than $17 million.  Not using it on the few players you do sign makes no sense unless you really plan on signing more players.

I don't "hate" the signing, but don't you think we could have been better served with a guy like Dan Campbell who's a better blocker or even go into the draft where it's really deep at TE?

I guess they really do want Schobel to replace Lewis:  he's going to wear #89.

-says that perception is that he's a pass-catching TE only, but that he feels his blocking is a lot better than when he came into the league and that he is continually working on it

-sounds like the guy's just happen to have a damn job... Eagles made an offer on day one which got his attention

I've been meaning to ask you this...

what the hell is up with your sig? Any reason you chose that?

I'm thinking it has to do with lil chick going "cheep...cheep". It's either that or hunt likes bunnies.

if birds and bunnies can get along & carry on a civilized conversation, why can't all of us?

I think that's a pig, not a bunny.

Look at Schobel's face in that pic. Looks like Sims is really giving the guy all he can handle.

Or at least holding on for dear life.

I'll toss in my two cents, I think Schobel is a damn good signing, it fills a need, and I think the guy has upside. Cincy never threw the ball to any of their TEs, I think between the three they had a total of 35-40 catches. If I remember Schobel was pretty highly ranked in terms of TEs in his draft class, which was a pretty good one.

Name                RD    Pick     Team
Jeremy Shockey      1     14     N.Y. Giants
Daniel Graham        1     21     New England
Jerramy Stevens     1     28     Seattle
Doug Jolley             2     55     Oakland
Matt Schobel           3      67     Cincinnati
Chris Baker             3     88     N.Y. Jets
Justin Peelle            4    103    San Diego
Randy McMichael     4    114     Miami

Some pretty good TE's were taken before and after the dude.

Here is his write-up from the '02 Draft from NFL.com:

Quote
Matt Schobel
Position: Tight End
College: Texas Christian
Height: 6-5
Weight: 263
Hometown: Columbus, Texas

ANALYSIS
Positives: Physical position blocker who has nimble feet and does a nice job escaping the jam to get into his routes ... Has excellent lateral agility and uses his hands well to lock on and ride the defender wide ... Catches well in the short area ... Has an explosive initial burst off the snap ... Decisive moving out to neutralize the linebackers ... Stays low while trying to out-muscle defenders ... Good in-line battler who has the quickness to hook defensive ends inside on sweeps ... Extends his arms to catch away from the framework ... Maintains balance when engaging defenders ... Has the short area speed to line up in a variety of slots ... Looks in the routine pass, making proper jumps to get to the ball at its highest point ... Possesses the speed to threaten the seam.

Negatives: Has limited starting experience ... More of a finesse blocker, lacking explosion behind his hits ... Will lean into the defender and waist bends at times when trying to recover ... Not real shifty running after the catch and does not run his routes with much urgency ... Needs to sustain blocks better, as he relies too much on using his size ... Pops straight up and does not drive off the ball with authority ... Not a "gym rat" and will go at his own pace in the weight room ... Tough player, but does not play with the aggressiveness or intensity you'd expect.

Who gives a shtein where he was drafted or how the guys above him and below him have done? All that matters is how he has done. He is exceedingly mediocre. That being said, his overall contributions will be directly proportional to the confidence Donovan has in him. I don't honestly believe that Reid had any Chad Lewis plays on his card the years when Lewis made the Probowl.

My point fargstick, is that the guy should be a capable backup, and has talent. I wasn't pimping him as the greatest TE ever. Cincy never utilized a TE in their offense, other than to stay in and block for Rudi Johnson. The only time they had a ball come their way was when Kitna/Palmer checked down. So it's a possiblity the guy has some talent that wasn't used in Cincy, and it may be here.

To sum up, suck my balls, you waste of space.

Where do you draw the conclusion that he has talent and should be a capable backup? Sure he MAY have talent. I don't put much stock in draft evaluations (Quentin Caver) or Combine results (Mike Mamula). He has not shown that he is demonstably better than Steven Spach, or worse. I am one, however, who believes in Reid's pro evaluations and accept but am non-plussed by this signing.

Imagine this, I can disagree without a personal attack.

This guy has actually made plays in his career, that already makes him better than Spach.

No. I must reitterate that I am a fan of Reid's pro evaluations and his belief in niche type players.

And.......Schoebel's wife is a hot smokin' piece of ass!
