QuoteSources: Tagliabue comtemplating retirement
ESPN.com news services

Paul Tagliabue is seriously contemplating ending his 17-year run as NFL commissioner, league sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The sources say Tagliabue is expected to exercise a clause in his contract with league owners in which he becomes a "Senior Executive" consultant with a significant compensation package.

There has been recent speculation that Tagliabue's reign was in its final year or two, but the sources pinpointed the commissioner's decision as possible during the next 60 days. Tagliabue's current contract has two years remaining on it and it is believed to pay him between $8 and $10 million through May of 2008.

I don't think its yawn inducing at all. He's more or less responsible for the league's MASSIVE jump in popularity. Interesting to see what will happen.

Rich McKay would be a good choice.  But the outright humor of a guy named "Dick Cass" might be worth it.  Of course, he hates the Eagles because he was in the thick of the TO arbitration/forced trade in 2004.

I'm all for McKay.  or Joe Banner.  HA!

with Banner, the next superbowl would be at some high school field in Texas because he wouldnt agree to pay the renting cost of a bigger stadium

It's obvious the choice should be Joe Gibbs.

Replace one Skins fan with another.

Plus good ol' Joe just loves the NFL and would be a great ambassador to the game. He'd do it right.

I'll get on the Condosleazy bandwagon.  She'd do less damage as head of the NFL.

I just don't get this hatred for the players thats so popular among you fools.  How can you begrudge them a dominant portion of the profits?  It's their goddamned necks on the line.  Their actual lives, not just a monetary investment.

The only thing I can think is that we hear them so much more than the owners, it's easier to hate them.

QuoteNFL | Tagliabue might delay retirement
Sun, 21 May 2006 19:59:14 -0700

Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, reports NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has postponed his target retirement date by about a month because he does not expect the league's franchise owners will have chosen a successor by then. Tagliabue said Thursday, May 18, that he expects to remain in office after his scheduled July 31 retirement, but hopes the owners will select a new commissioner by the time the 2006 season opens Sept. 7.
