A 'TENDER' DAY FOR THE EAGLES
March 2, 2006
By DAVE SPADARO

As many teams in the NFL spend today shedding payroll and releasing players to reach the league-mandated limit of $94.5 million within the salary cap, the Eagles will announce today that they've tendered contracts to a group of four restricted free agents, led by cornerback Rod Hood. The tenders give the Eagles negotiating rights with the foursome, which also includes punter Dirk Johnson, running back/return man Reno Mahe and safety Quintin Mikell.

That official announcement must be made prior to 4 p.m. today.

Amid the league's labor uncertainty -- NFL owners are reportedly meeting today in New York in a last-ditch effort to come to an agreement on sharing revenue -- teams are expected to spend most of the day releasing players to reach compliance with the $94.5 million salary cap.

Already, several quality players have been released around the league and more are expected in the coming hours. The Eagles are not expected to make any moves, as they are reportedly comfortably under the salary cap.

You can discuss all of issues today on Eagles Live!, which starts at 1 p.m. live from the NovaCare Complex.

farging Mahe gets a tender.  :boom

Did Mahe even get drafted? What the farg? Did they give him the middle first-round tender? Jesus Christ. Way to ruin my morning.

It doesn't say what levels they were tendered at.

No way they give Mahe a $1M+ tender with the cap like it is. He wasn't drafted, no.

Newsflash:

Just because Reno Mahe received a RFA tender does not mean he has a job in 2006. This is not guaranteed money.

I ain't no Reno fan, but him receiving a RFA tender isn;t the end of the world. Bruce Perry will beat him out.

It's one step closer to having a job than he should be. I would love it if Perry beat him out. Isn't going to happen. Mahe is on the team this year. Unreal.

I hope Mahe makes it just to piss you off. Just like you hope "Saint" Favre doesn't retire because of the "whiners". :)

Yeah...I don't like the little queer either. Him along with Josh Parry are my biggest bullseyes to pick on and hate. And a few others too, but those are the main two guys.

But a RFA tage doesn't = job in 2006

I understand that a tender doesn't mean he is coming back, but why not give the tag to someone else? I would rather them give it Adams, or shtein, even McCants.

I'm pretty sure that giving Mahe a tender doesn't keep them from not using it on others. It's possible that they are aware  there may be interest in him from other teams

McCants = UFA
Adams = UFA

A RFA tender is for Restricted Free Agents. There is no tag here. Its not like a frachise tag or transition tag.

the fact that hes on the team to even receive the tag is what makes me ornery

ill just repost my thoughts from the punt returner thread

"I can easily see Mahe being on the team next year (not that i want to). From Reids perspective he can return punts, can catch the ball out of the backfield, knows the offense in and out (especially interesting quote from Moats about Mahe knowing everything) and is a good character guy.  It's hard to find much more in a 4th string RB."
Title: Re: Eagles Tender Four

If he could add "a modicum of talent" to that list he'd be the bestest 4th striger evar!

has anyone looked into the possibility that the eagles just sprinkled some seasoned salt on these four and hit them with a meat mallet?

Good point. He's not a home run threat, but at least he's not a walking heart attack, either.

Getting a tender doesn't mean much, actually, other than the Eagles get to make a matching offer should he get one out in the rest of the NFL. Plus if another team grabs him, the Eagles get a draft pick out of it.

I'm also thinking that this could be a bit of a smokescreen, too. The Eagles have been said to be interested in a number of FA and college RBs. This wouldn't be the first time they did something to throw other NFL teams off the scent.

Hood got the middle tender (1st round compensation)

Johnson, Mikell and Mahe got the low tender which only gives the Eagles the right to match. No compensation since none of them were drafted.
