......and it just melted.
Following the instructions, I installed the software and then plugged it into my computer for it to charge. The instructions said to allow about 3 or 4 hours to get a full charge, which is about what I expected. So I leave it sitting on my desk and go out in my living room to watch tv. About an hour and a half later I go in to check the status of it and see how it's coming. I figure I should be able to start transferring some songs to it from my computer. I go to pick it up and damn near burned my hand.
That thing was farging hot. I immediately unplugged it and that's when I noticed there was a small part of the white plastic face that was melting.
$400 and the thing's trying to burn my farging house down. St00pid technology.
Are you sure it wasn't the toaster you plugged it into?
:-D
If it is, then I'm really screwed because that means I just jammed a bagel into my cd drive.
:-D :-D
Hmmm, that's abnormal. The amount of time left on to charge should not matter. It shouldn't overheat to the point of melting. That is a fire hazard.
You probably have a faulty unit. It should be covered under warranty. Just return it and get a new one. Explain the situation to an Apple customer service rep, and ask if you did something wrong. If not, then just keep a close eye on it.
The only time something like that should ever melt is if you leave it in the front seat of a car in the summer.
Did you happen to leave a cover on it while charging? Also try charging it without using the computer.
Nope, didn't leave a cover or anything on it. And you have to charge it by plugging it into the computer. It doesn't come with an ac adapter.
I bought the car charger for it but I'm not going to leave my car running for 3 hours to charge the damn thing.
Guess I gotta take it back to the store after work tomorrow. I know I'm not going to have any problems returning it or anything. It just really chafes my nuts given the amount of money I just dropped on it.
Mine came with a charger. I plug mine into an outlet.
You can probably buy one seperate.
The reason why I asked was because I did a google, and I read that some people had issues charging on the computer. I wouldn't panic just yet. Take it back and see what happens with the new one. If you get the same problems, then it's something worth looking into.

Maybe we should start a Point & Laugh at Sarge thread...

They haven't made iPODs that are 'Marine Proof' yet.

You can use any headphones. But the only audio out is the small jack, so you might need to get an adaptor. I use a Sony MDR-V150 set because I can't stand having those plugs shoved into my ears.

Shouldn't be a big deal considering you live in your car.
Sassy... have you considered taking the thing back to the store yet?
If not, you really should.
I'd take that thing back to the store. Really, I would.
tell Apple there was a severed finger inside the Ipod.
Or he could take it back to the store for a full refund.
That's what I'd do if I were him.
i think you should plug it in again and see if you can make it melt completely.

This is the smartest thing said in this thread. And I had thought about doing that and seeing if I could get some severe burns on my hands and sue for millions. The only problem with that is I didn't want to burn my right hand because that's my jerking hand. And I use my left hand for nose picking and ass scratching......in that particular order.
Ipods make great substitutes for hockey pucks in a pinch.
I'd still go with the refund option, although Sassy doesn't seem to be leaning that way for some inexplicable reason.

Ok, I've been thinking about this all morning but I'm not sure what to do. I've got my choices limited to 2 options though.

I used an MDR-V150 all the time at work, and it works just fine with my Mini. Not quite studio-quality headphones, but they do a decent job. Plus they help keep out all the noise generated by my obnoxious coworkers.
yea i didnt mean to ask if they are equivalent to using them in a studio or even on a home stereo...but with an ipod you can get them as loud as you would ever need?
i ask cause cause my cd walkman cant handle my headphones...i top out the volume on it and it still isnt near loud enough for me

I don't have a problem with volume, but the headphones aren't exactly studio quality..they were $25 or something like that. I'd imagine true studio headphones with big fat wires offer a lot more resistance, so the weak iPod signal would probably get squashed.
Now for the question you've been silently begging us to ask, so you can show us how
wiggy rolls: what headphones do you use? Are you sporting genuine studio quality, super expensive headphones, like a jackass? I suspect you are?

yes
but they are for at home mostly...i also actually have a cassette walkman that powers them fine

I know you didn't...but you did mention studio-type headphones, and I was trying to give a little bit of background reference.
but with an ipod you can get them as loud as you would ever need?
Absolutely.
BTW, I also have a pair of old AKG K240s that I rarely use now, since I don't normally use heaphones at home, and they're just too damned big for work. But they are definitely studio-quality headphones. I might try 'em out on the iPod, just to see how well it works.

Sus is quoting like IGY now. I'm scared.
I plead temporary stupidity due to boredom.
After much deliberation I felt it may be a good idea to take my ipod back to the store. So I exchanged it for a new one. And while I was there I decided to purchase a new computer since I've been in the market for one anyway. So I've got my new computer and my new ipod and I'm feeling pretty good about myself.
So I get home and hook up the new computer. Everything's running just fine on it and I hook it up to the net. So far, so good. Then I install the software for the ipod. Good to go. Then I plug in the ipod to charge it up. Still good.
So the ipod's been charging for about an hour now. No problems so far. I clicked on the itunes icon to see what that's all about and it keeps shutting down. In the error report I get it tells me the most common solution to my problem is that I need to remove QuickTime from my computer. So I go to the add/remove programs menu and there's no QuickTime there to be removed.
There's a QT icon on my desktop so I click on it and I get a message that says QT failed to initialize and to make sure it's installed properly on my computer.
I don't get it. I've got one window telling me to remove it and another telling me to make sure it's there. WTF?
Any suggestions?
Take the computer back to the store.
Any other suggestions?
plug the computer into the ipod and see if the computer gets hot
Holy shtein! My computer is melting!!!!

The ipod software is supposed to have QT on it. I don't know what the hell the problem was and why QT wasn't properly installing. I ended up just doing a google search for it, found the right software and installed it. Problem solved. Now I've just got to get all my music off my laptop and put it on my new pc. That should be fun. Especially since the ehternet port on my laptop is broken. I'm probably going to have to burn everything to cd to transfer it.

If you don't have one, just borrow a router from a friend to set up a network. It'd be way less labor intensive than burning everything to CD if you have a lot of music...particularly if you don't have a DVD burner.
Have you ever heard of wireless networking, Sassy?
Yeah, but don't I have to buy additional software/hardware to set that up?
I've got a wireless router and both my laptop and desktop are connected to it. Is that all I need to do or is there more?
It's a simple matter of setting up Windoze networking between the two.

Step Two: Open window.
Step Three: Hurl PC out the window.
Step Four: Hurl self out window.
Step Five: ??

That's a start. You have to make sure file sharing is turned on, blah blah, etc, and so forth.
I'm not getting into more detail to help you, because I hate Windows file-sharing and avoid it at all costs. It's a shame you don't have a working ethernet port. That would be so simple.
If you don't want to farg around with networks, get a 2 gig usb memory stick and move it that way. lot faster than burning CDs. $100 bucks for the device and they're useful as all hell so it wouldn't be a big waste of money.

Seriously, if you have a router, just set up your laptop for filesharing. Then go to your PC, look for the laptop in the network, and drag the files you want over to the PC.

Sounds simple enough so I think I'll give that a shot first. I thought I was going to have to buy additional equipment to set up a network though. If I can't figure out how to do it, I'll probably just go buy the memory stick.
Unless you need it for something else, you'll be spending $100 for no good reason. You already have everything you need to set up the network. I mean, you can disable it after you transfer the files...no big deal.

I just now checked 'em out. The AKGs are definitely not as efficient, and while I could get a decent volume out of them, I can't say that they are really LOUD, even with everything turned up to the max. I even plugged 'em into my laptop, and the sound isn't as loud as it should be.
