Post by: 4and26 on February 08, 2006, 04:46:12 PM
The games start in three days.....does anyone care?         Seems like there almost no hype or any interest in the games.
Thoughts?

Quote"I missed the bus. They changed the schedule," Weir said. "It was every 10 minutes. Today it was every half-hour. I was late getting here and never caught up. I never felt comfortable in this building. I didn't feel my inner peace. I didn't feel my aura. Inside I was black."

QuoteHe's here, he's Weir  :-D :-D :-D

By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports | February 16, 2006

TURIN, Italy – Ah, let's see, how should I phrase this one without getting into trouble?

OK ... so, if there was, per chance, the need for a closet to be involved in Johnny Weir's personal life (hypothetically speaking, of course, although, judging by 99 percent of the American public's perception of him there would not be said need) don't you think it is rather remarkable that he has never come out of it?

If, of course, there even is a closet. Oh, and, for the record, not that there is anything wrong with that. Or anything else. But, well, ah, let's just say ...

"If Johnny Weir isn't gay, then I'm not gay," said Jim Buzinski, founder of outsports.com, a gay sports web site, on Thursday.

Thank you, Jim, for bailing me out here. (For the record, Jim is gay.)

Johnny Weir has rocketed to become the most popular and talked-about male figure skater in years. And it is not just because of his skating – which, unfortunately, he didn't display in a poor performance here Thursday where he finished fifth.

He's a national phenomenon because of his flamboyant ways, even if he isn't officially gay. Few people seem to care what he really is; they just like the showmanship that makes Elton John look straight.

It's the dandy outfits. It's the rhinestones. It's the Louis Vuitton bags. It is the prancing ways. It's the fact he describes himself as "princessy," says things such as "I felt like the prettiest flower at the pond" and wears a single red glove.

"I call my glove 'Camille,' " he said at the national championships. "Two Ls."

Know any straight men who would say that? How about admitting Christina Aguilera is their idol? I am less convinced Wilt Chamberlain was straight than I am that Johnny Weir is not.

"NBC's segment was titled, 'He's Here, He's Weir," noted Buzinski, a pun off the "we're here, we're queer" gay rights slogan. "Wonder what they were trying to say?"

Buzinski notes that you'd have to have the worst "gaydar" on earth not to sniff this one out. The beauty of it all is that the lack of subtlety is why he so popular.

"He's hysterical," said Buzinski, whose website has been overrun with Weir talk. "He's so out there. Gay people love the guy the way they always love divas."

Straight people do too. I (since we are discussing it) am heterosexual, but feel quite comfortable saying I love the guy. He's colorful, fun, entertaining. We need more characters like him in sports.

"Tony Kornheiser, who is the least gay human being on the planet, loves the guy for who he is," said Buzinski.

But, why, then is Johnny Weir not officially gay? He's declined to answer the question, even on his personal website.

"I don't feel the need to express my sexual being because it's not part of my sport and it's private," Weir writes. "I can sleep with whomever I choose and it doesn't affect what I'm doing on the ice, so speculation is speculation.

"I like nice things, and beautiful things, so if that is the only way people are determining that I swing one way or the other, then to me, that's sad. You can't judge a book by its cover, ever. I am who I am, and I don't need to justify anything to anyone."

This would be a reasonable explanation, except on every other subject Weir is like a 13-year-old girl at a slumber party – no secrets. He talks about everything. He says anything. He seems to relish it.

"He can't [come out] because he will deal with repercussions from judges," claims Jon Jackson, a former skater and Olympic-qualified judge, who is the author of the book "On Edge: Backroom Dealing, Cocktail Scheming, Triple Axels and How Top Skaters Get Screwed."

"I've seen it," Jackson said Thursday, "And it goes beyond (prejudice) from straight judges. (It includes) gay male judges who have their own sexual identity threatened if a gay skater does something feminine."

Jackson, who again for the record, is also gay, says the figure skating establishment in the U.S. encourages skaters to stay in the closet by making it known they want their athletes to be straight because it believes that is what the public wants.

He estimates that 30 to 40 percent of elite male American skaters are gay. But in what Buzinski calls "the gayest sport," there hasn't been an openly gay American skater since Rudy Galindo came out in 1996.

"It is U.S. Figure Skating's mindset that it is not good for skating," said Jackson. "It is what Tonya Harding dealt with. If you are not a perfect lady, it hurts figure skating's image. If you are not perfectly manly, it hurts figure skating's image. But if there was ever a sport [where] it wouldn't matter, it is this one."

U.S. Figure Skating denies those accusations.

"We are not commenting on the book because it so baseless," said Lindsay DeWall, spokesperson for the organization. "I don't think [sexual orientation] is any of our business. A skater is free to be whoever they want to be publicly and privately."

This brings us back to Weir, who despite missing out on a medal, will return to the States as one of the Olympics' most popular and publicized athletes. He is a hero to the gay community – "We love him," said Buzinski. He is popular in much of the straight one, too.

He seems like a natural for Leno, Letterman and who knows what else. He may not get mainstream endorsement deals, but he isn't likely to fade away. Besides, he is only 21 and promises to be back for the next Olympics.

By then, perhaps, we will have gotten to the point where closets, if there are any, no longer matter. Although, judging by the Weir phenomenon, I think mainstream America is closer than ever.

Either way, here's hoping Johnny Weir, whatever he is, hasn't changed one single bit.

add the women's hockey team to the list of the US chokefest in Italy...

QuoteTURIN, Italy (CP) - Sweden upset the United States in the women's Olympic hockey semifinals, winning a shootout 2-0 for a 3-2 win.

Swedish goaltender Kim Martin was the big difference in the game, as the U.S. outshot the Swedes 39-17 in regulation and overtime.

The teams were tied 2-2 after regulation.

Sweden will meet the winner of the Canada-Finland semifinal for the gold.

2-1 final, with games against Sweden and Russia remaining.  If the USA loses both games, they'll likely finish in a tie with Latvia for the 4th spot in Group B, making goal differential the tiebreaker...

Also today, Forsberg had 2 assists as Sweden beat Latvia 6-1, and Niittymaki had another good game as Finland beats the Czechs 4-2.  Jagr left the game in the 2nd period after having his head slammed into a wall....  :yay

Saw much of the third period. Of what I saw was that the US had a problem getting close to the goaly most of the time.

Found out the Dutch have their second gold, surprisingly by Marianne Timmer.

As far as the notion goes that with Davis the US would have won a medal in the team-race is bull. Because based on personal accomplishments, the Italians should have never won gold at all. At least the Dutch and Americans should have come out on top.

Yeah, Davis is indeed a loner. But in a way so is Hedrick.

Canada right now = Philadelphia after 0-2 start to the 2003 Eagles season

and I didn't really expect much out of the US team, but they are playing so well in every other area, it's frustrating that they can't get more than 1 goal a game, they had two 5 on 3's for almost the full 2 minutes yesterday and barely got any good shots off.

QuoteVIENNA (Reuters) - Italian prosecutors found more than 100 syringes and 30 packs of drugs, including asthma drugs and antidepressants, in a raid on Austrian Winter Olympics bases, an Italian prosecutor told Austrian television.

They also seized devices for blood testing and blood transfusions in the raid on Saturday on the country's biathlon and cross-country teams, Austrian state television ORF said on its Web site on Monday, quoting Turin prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello.

ORF also quoted another Turin prosecutor, Marcello Maddalena, as saying the raids were coordinated closely with the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Maddalena said officials tried to avoid disturbing the athletes too much.

"But a raid is a raid," ORF quoted Maddalena as saying. "You cannot announce it in advance, nor can you put on your velvet gloves."

I don't think this accentuates any difference between races.  I think it says quite the contrary.  It says "Look, black people can do this too."

I think I see the point you're getting at though.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're trying to say that by even mentioning race, it keeps it at the front of everyone's mind.  Instead of this guy just being a guy who won a medal, he's a black guy who won a medal.

You have to try and look at it from a black perspective though.  (Granted, I'm not exactly the resident expert but I think I'm able to give a somewhat unbiased and realistic opinion since I grew up with a black step brother/step mom and their family).  If there was no mention of race then the black community would feel like they've been over looked.  Granted, I think everyone can tell by looking at the guy so I don't see the point in mention his race, but at the same time, a lot of accomplishments by minorities in this country have gone unnoticed and uncelebrated in the media.

Hopefully there will be a day when both black and white people can just look at each other as people without race being an issue.  But sadly, that still isn't the case and it won't be the case until black people succeed in EVERY area that white people do.  This includes all types of sports, business, science, etc.  Until that time comes, the first time a black (or any minority for that matter) person does something that a person of that race hasn't done before it will still be celebrated as a racial achievment rather than an individual accomplishment.

Does anyone remember when the United States' athletes were a symbol of pride? When we were young they were respected as hard workers and over-achievers. They competed with heart and cried when the national anthem was played. This Olympics has reconvinced me that the athletes in this country have lost any semblence of pride or notion of what it means win or lose with grace. They don't seem to care and the one's that do care are such primadonna's that you can't help but smirk when they stumble.

The women's hockey team choked. The downhill skiers choked. The boardercross chick was a good 50 yards in the lead and showboated her way to second. The men's hokcey team sucks. Anton Ohno was a lock to make the finals and decided to pass someone right before the finish line and choked himself out of the finals. The males speed skaters fight with each other like bitches.

Dave Johnson.  The two were supposed to be tops in the 1992 Olympics, but Johnson took home the bronze and O'Brien didn't medal.  Johnson didn't make the '96 team, and O'Brien won gold.

So the "Dan and Dave" ad campaign in 1992 was a bust.

David Duval got hurt, FF.  He ripped his back to shreds and is only now coming back from it.

When they signed him, he was the #1 player in the world.  I'm sure Nike having Duval & Tiger on the same team never hurt them much.

Anyway... I digress.   :P

the us hockey team didnt lose cause they didnt show up...or because of how much money they make...they lost because they werent as good as most of the teams and were better than only a couple...they dont have the talent other countries have...in fact they never have...hockey if you havent noticed is about on par with soccer in this country...and the few really good players the us had are all older and over the hill...and the younger generation is simply not that good...

its really best to educate yourselves before you go into your 'i hate my own life so much im gonna take it out on rich athletes' tirade

X-Post with Flyers thread:

Gagne down and apparently severely hurt in game vs. Russia!  Yay Olympics!
Quote
Canada forward Simon Gagne was assisted off the ice with an apparent right leg injury after being upended by Russia's Darius Kasparaitis late in the first period.

As Gagne was releasing the puck after carrying it behind the Russia net, Kasparaitis backed into him, knocking Gagne off his skates and causing him to land hard on the ice. Gagne, in considerable pain, stayed on the ice for several minutes before being assisted to the locker room — favoring his right leg.

Hey why don't you start a thread about how badly you feel for athletes and the hardships they're subjected to, dude. That would rule.

My last thought on IGY's little comment is that I was educated about the US Hockey team. No one expected them to medal. They weren't one of the best teams by long way, but mustering a farging tie against Arturs Irbe and the Latvian team is a disgrace. Spin it in favor of the players however you want, but try to find one reason to root for the american athletes OTHER THAN the fact that they are american. Convince me of just one reason that american athletes are worth rooting for and I'll shut up about their dumb rich pampered asses. But until someone can convince me that our diefication of these idiots hasn't made them nearly unwatchable, I'm going to keep bitching about them and the stupid money that gets thrown at them.

No offense, Feva, but Davis's selfishness in refusing to do the Pursuit event is unacceptable.

When they only told him about the race a week in advance?  If the race wasn't important enough for them to solicit him more than a week in advace, then why did it all of a sudden become soooo important the moment Shani declined?

As EagleFeva said, speedracing is an individual sport.  (They just tacked this "team pursuit" thing on here just recently - it's a brand new event and it's not even taken that seriously yet.)  Shani has been training for his individual events for far longer than this team event has even existed.  I don't necessarily blame him for puting more of a priority on something he's devoted many more years of his life for.

I wonder why they didn't schedule the team pursuit for the very end of the speedracing events, like they do in track?  Then Shani wouldn't have been put in such a tough spot - and this Chad Hedrick bozo couldn't have seized the opportunity to smear his threatening rival.

QuoteHis participation would have all-but guaranteed the U.S. another medal.  He's a selfish piece of shtein, no matter what race he is.

Are you sure the U.S. would have been in the medals if Shani had participated?  The final times may indicate that the U.S. was a longer shot than Chad and the media was making it out to be.  And there are many out there who thankfully aren't buying the Hedrick/NBC spin, and are at least somewhat understanding of Shani's position.  For one thing, there has been skepticism toward Chad's actual motives for ripping Shani about the team pursuit thing.  Chad and his agent had self-proclaimed visions of Chad's winning 5 medals - and in the Chad camp's view, Shani's non-participation in the team event ruined those chances.  Also, it is suspected that this "Shani's not a team player" whine was a headgame - Chad was just afraid that Shani would have an advantage over him for the 1500m by being relatively well-rested.  I'd place a bet that Chad was trying to get into Shani's head.

I just wonder how much Shani has had to put up with being black in a lily white sport.  Not to place all of Shani's problem on racism, but let's be realistic.  I know that when you're black succeeding in a white-dominated field, you definately can be a thorn in people's sides.

bode miller is a complete waste of life...

Unrepentant Bode: 'Man, I Rocked Here' By JIM LITKE, AP Sports Columnist

Unbent, unbowed and ultimately unsuccessful, Bode Miller said in an interview Saturday he is skiing away from these Olympics on his own terms — content without any medals and impressed by the local nightlife.

"I just did it my way. I'm not a martyr, and I'm not a do-gooder. I just want to go out and rock. And man, I rocked here," Miller said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press soon after he skidded off the slalom course in his fifth and final race, completing an 0-for-the-Olympics.

Miller came to the Italian Alps cresting on a wave of expectations and was considered a medal threat in every Alpine event. But he failed to finish three of them and his best showing was fifth in the downhill — part of a games with few highlights for the U.S. Ski Team.

"The expectations were other people's," Miller said. "I'm comfortable with what I've accomplished, including at the Olympics. I came in here to race as hard as I could. That was my obligation to myself."

As for his obligation to prepare, Miller said he was less ready for these games than the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, where he won two silver medals.

"I've been living my life as if I might have died two weeks before the Olympics started," he said. "That left me the opportunity to dig deep, to go down that other route, to make more sacrifices and get back to where I was."

Miller said that while he might have prepared differently, he isn't one to second guess and he started each race fully focused and determined to win.

He called his Olympic experience "awesome" and cited the gold medals by teammates Julia Mancuso and Ted Ligety as one reason. Another, he said, was Sestriere's bar scene.

"My quality of life is the priority. I wanted to have fun here, to enjoy the Olympic experience, not be holed up in a closet and not ever leave your room," he said. "People said, 'Why can't you stay in for the two weeks, three weeks? You've got the rest of your life to experience the games the way everybody else does.' But I like the whole package. I always have."

He compared his Olympic experience to fellow American Daron Rahlves, who was a favorite in the downhill and a contender in the super-G but didn't come close to the podium.

"Look at what happened to Rahlves. He was holed up in his RV, he's probably the fittest guy out here and he made a point of talking about how important the Olympics were to him," Miller said. "And then look — a little bad luck and he's got nothing to show for the whole thing.

"Me, it's been an awesome two weeks," Miller said. "I got to party and socialize at an Olympic level."

QuoteForsberg puts stamp on gold medal win
By Steve Keating

TURIN (Reuters) - When Peter Forsberg scored the goal that won Sweden their first Olympic ice hockey gold medal in 1994 the moment was immortalized forever on a postage stamp.

Forsberg delivered another gold medal for Sweden on Sunday, helping set up Nicklas Lidstrom's winning goal in a 3-2 win over Nordic rivals Finland that could trigger another philatelic frenzy.

Lidstrom's goal is likely to be remembered by Swedes the same way Argentines recall Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal at the 1986 World Cup and Canadians recollect Paul Henderson's decisive goal in Canada's landmark 1972 Summit Series win over Russia.

"It should be (on a stamp)," said Sweden captain Mats Sundin, who also played a part the winning tally. "It's the first time we have won a tournament against the best in the world and that shot should probably go into the history books."

Sundin sparked the winning goal when he won the opening face off and Forsberg broke over the blue line with the puck.

His drop pass back to Sundin, followed by another drop pass to Lidstrom gave the Detroit Red Wings defenceman an uncontested view and he fired a slap shot past goalie Antero Niittymaki.

"Mats laid it up perfectly for me," said Lidstrom. "I hit it perfectly, I got everything on the shot. I hit the spot where I was aiming."

If the goal does end up on a stamp or coin, it might be fitting that Forsberg, Sundin and Lidstrom are on it together.

The NHL veterans represent the same golden age of Swedish hockey and probably played in their last Olympic tournament wearing the Tre Kronor, the club's three-crowned logo.

Certainly the Swedes' win goes a long way to erasing the disappointment of their quarter-final exit in Salt Lake City four years ago when goalie Tommy Salo misplayed a long shot against Belarus to knock them out of the tournament.

"I think it means a lot to Swedish hockey," said Sundin. "We are getting older this is kind of a last chance for us.

"I know it means a lot to this generation of players. It's been a long wait. The last two Olympics we were expected to win and didn't.

"It's an amazing feeling."

Nitty gets tournament MVP.

Reminds me of when Hexy won the Conn Smythe in 1987.

:-\

Hopefully Forsberg will have enough left in him to help the Flyers win four playoff series this spring.

Forsberg can kiss my pasty white ass.  He shouldn't have played in the Olympics.  If that motherfarging piece of garbage isn't 100% healthy for the rest of the Flyers season, he should be taken out to pasture and shot along with the guy he was traded for on draft day.

actually the Olympics might be the best thing that could've happened for the Flyers.   Niittymaki comes back with a ton of confidence from playing well at a world class level, while Sweden figured out a way to treat a groin.  Hopefully, when Peter tweaks it again, he'll put the Flyers' trainers on the phone with some Sweedish doctor.

Kill yourself. Immediately. I'm not kidding. You come on here complaining about a bunch of men not caring about figure skating and talking about tearing up some flexible ass. Then you mention that you frequent a gymnastics/figure skating message board? Die.

Don't worry - I'll basically remain an elusive, ghost-like figure on this board.  You can already consider me dead, for all the hanging-around I'll do in this ratsnest.   :evil

"Frequent" is too strong of a word for what I do over at that h*llhole these days.  My visits over there are basically like my visits over here - as brief and as painless as possible!

But the Gymnastics Gossip Messageboard always welcomes new fans and pervs - y'all should try it!  Something tells me that you wouldn't mind reading more about Sasha.  And there's a heck of a lot more Sasha talk over there than you'll find over here (although more than 50% of it concerns her actual skating, you'll find plenty of "hot" and "diva slut" references...)  Gymnastics Gossip Messageboard (http://new.gymgossip.com/index.php)
