Title: Jim Johnson Interviewing In St. Louis For The HC Job?
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on January 03, 2006, 07:44:11 PM
A poster on the EMB reported that he heard Jay Glazer on with Jody Mac on 950am and Glazer said that JJ is on a flight out to STL to interview for their HC job.

No link yet, just going by what I read. About to go look on FS.com now...

That would suck ass losing both co.'s.

I think it was reported that St. Louis was looking for a D minded coach.  I would have thought Rivera would have been the best candidate if that's what they're looking for.  Maybe we can get Vitt back. :)

edit:  Isn't there a rule that a team can't interview a coach/coordinator while he's in the playoffs or making a playoff run?  I was hoping maybe the listener 'mis-listened' and heard, 'Eagles defensive coordinator on a flight to St. Louis' instead of "Riveria used to coach lb's for the Eagles and is now the D.C. who is contemplating a flight to..." ah farg it I don't know.

i cant imagine him getting a job...but with the inordinate amount of openings this year i guess anything is possible...and stl had success in hiring another old man

Apparently the guy STL really wants is Ron Rivera, but since CHI is in the playoffs they have to wait a bit to get to him. Although I think they can interview him once during their off week.

But if they cannot get Rivera they're going after Rivera's mentor, JJ.

Rams fans not too happy with JJ interviewing (http://www.ramsrule.com/theoriginalherd/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=100&topic_id=120841&mode=full)

No official link yet but their fans are talking about it too...

If the BIrds lose JJ they will have to go outside the organization for a DC. They have no one ready to take over the role as DC waiting in the wings.

Brasher - about to reture
Spagnuolo - no thanks
Walters - not here long enough

I do not want a defense that was in shambles this year having to learn a new syystem next year on top of trying to improve from this year. That is too much especially since it'll likely be a new scheme since we do not have a DC waiting in the wings here. They'd probably have to go outside the organization to get one.

Some fans on other sites seem to want JJ out of here, but I think that is crazy.

Buddy Ryan. Do it. Get him.

I could see us putting in Spags maybe.  Safety's coach first (had to look that one up), defensive quality control then LB's coach.  Very much like Rivera who seemed to have very similiar start at both of those positions.  Spags would probably install a similiar system or tweak the exisiting one.

Brashear, no way, too old and slurs.

There's no coordinator on this team that deserves a promotion. And what happened to Johnson saying he didn't want to head coach anywhere?

If he can land a HC job somewhere, then I'm glad to wish him well and say goodbye.

I'll give you an UNLIKELY internal candidate, and a likely external candidate.

External candidate: Rod Marinelli, DL coach of the Bucs.

UNLIKELY internal candidate: John Harbaugh--His backround is in defense and I read in the Inky, although I think it was last season, that Harbaugh sits in all of the defense's meetings.

As I said, unlikely, but you never know.

Rivera can't interview until Jan 13-14th by league rules. And , though I know you're just jesting, Vitt has been hospitalized again with a staph infection.

while im not happy with the way the defense turned out this year, JJ's departure would surely mean another mediocre season.  the most likely scenario with a defense built around speed and JJ's scheme would be not finding a suitable replacement.  i don't think an offense minus a another TO type player has it in them to carry this team to the SB next year.

Bobby,

I agree with you about Marinelli. While I want Johnson to stay here, if he does leave the guy I want replacing him is Rod Marinelli.

He obviously would bring that "Tampa 2" with him and that would help out the secondary, namely the corners because they'd be in less man coverage. But one thing that scheme does need is a MLB who can drop into coverage. And as much as I love Trotter, dropping out isn't his best attribute.

I doubt JJ gets the job. I think that they really want Rivera and Tim Lewis is their next guy.

If Johnson leaves, and the scheme changes, Trotter will become average overnight.

If that's truly the case, you're the lucky one.

Anyway, back on topic... If St. Louis hires Johnson, so be it.  Good luck to him.  I'm pretty sure they're just biding their time and possibly trying to get a feel for where Ron Rivera's coming from.

3-4 was last year's trendy fad. This year it's Cover 2.

Watching some of Iowa, some mocks have us taking Greenway.  Iowa seems to put him in a Tampa 2 sometimes at MLB and just drop him back on 3rd and long.

Johnson has said he's NOT INTERESTED in the Rams job and will be back for his 8th season as Eagles DC.
