The local TV networks are implying suicide, but all they really have is:

- it wasn't foul play.
- found unconscious and not breathing by g'friend at 1:30 AM.
- deputies responded and started CPR, unsuccessful.
- police gave "no comment" to suicide question.

Could be too much imbibing?

Colts owner Bill Polian said that QB coach Jim Caldwell has taken over on an interim basis.  There is no time table on Dungy's return.

I would imagine that Dungy will not coach this weekend against Seattle but may return for the final game against Arizona although I wouldn't be surprised if he took off the rest of the regular season.  His return prior to the playoffs is basically irrelevant at this point.

I feel terrible for Dungy and his family as well as the kid's friends and girlfriend. Now the insensitive coward has ruined Christmas for his entire family and friends because everytime this time of year rolls around they'll be reminded of the coward taking his own life.

It's tragic for those people.

But I have no sympathy for the kid who killed himself. If you kill yourself you're a punkass coward.

TAMPA (AP) — The son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy used a belt to hang himself from a ceiling fan, according to the 911 call the teen's girlfriend made when she found him last month.
Antoinette Anderson returned to James Dungy's apartment after a 10-minute walk early Dec. 22 to find him apparently lifeless, according to tapes released Wednesday. The tape is the first public indication how James Dungy, 18, killed himself.

"I think my boyfriend's dead," an anguished Anderson told an emergency dispatcher. "I think he tried to hang himself or something."

She told the dispatcher she had used a knife to cut James Dungy down and that his roommate was asleep in another room.

"Get the roommate up," the dispatcher told Anderson. "You're gonna need some help here, OK?"

QuoteAntoinette Anderson returned to James Dungy's apartment after a 10-minute walk early Dec. 22 to find him apparently lifeless, according to tapes released Wednesday.

I'm just playing conspiracy theory here, but does anyone else think it's a little strange that he managed to choke himself to death in less than 10 minutes?  It's not like he had everything rigged to go before she left the apartment.  I'm sure she might have noticed a belt tied to the ceiling fan and a chair directly beneath it.  So he probably waited a minute or 2 until she left and then had to set everything up.  Maybe that took another minute or 2 leaving him say anywhere between 5 - 7 minutes.  And if he was already dead when the girlfriend got home then I seriously doubt he died at the exact moment she walked through the front door.  So he must have been dead for at least a minute or so.  So now that leaves him a 4 - 6 minute window to actually die.  Some people can hold their breath for that long.  People have gone unconscious for several minutes, if not longer without breathing and still lived. I'm a relatively heavy smoker and I can hold my breath (just timed myeself) for 2m19s before I start feeling the need for air.  I'd say I could probably have held out for another 20 or 30 seconds too.  And I'm near 30, not nearly in as good of shape as I was at 18 and I smoke a pack a day.  This dude was 18 and played football and was a fairly well conditioned athlete so I think it might take a little more than 6 minutes without air to actually kill him.

I know there's nothing set in stone when it comes to a time table on how long a person can go without oxygen and still live.  Everybody's different.  But it just seems a little fishy to me.

I was thinking about that as well.  I just went out to my living room and tried to do a pull up on my ceiling fan to see if it could support my weight for a few minutes.  Here's what I've learned from the experience:

1.  Turn the fan off before attempting to raise your head above the blades.
2.  It cannot support the weight for more than 10 seconds.
3.  I need to dust my ceiling fan more often.

who cares.  little whiney rich attention whoring bastich probably.  can have anything he wants, and he wants to die.  i doubt it.   probably just wanted to stage an "attempted suicide", kind of like the people who go across the street, not down the road, and accidentally didn't realize how strong his ceiling fan was.

LUTZ, Fla. -- The death of the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has been ruled a suicide, a medical examiner said Friday.

James Dungy hanged himself from a bedroom ceiling fan with a leather belt, Dr. Jacqueline Lee of the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office wrote in her final autopsy report.

Authorities had ruled out foul play in December, but toxicology results were pending. Those tests were negative, except for caffeine and medication paramedics used in attempts to resuscitate the teen, Lee said.

Dungy was found by his girlfriend on Dec. 22, less than a half-hour after last being seen alive, according to the medical examiner's office. The teen's girlfriend called paramedics, who attempted to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at a Tampa hospital.

James Dungy had been taking extension classes at the University of South Florida, authorities said.

Tony Dungy coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001.

Authorities had ruled out foul play in December, but toxicology results were pending. Those tests were negative, except for caffeine and medication paramedics used in attempts to resuscitate the teen, Lee said.

~Only caffeine and resuscitation meds, huh?  Clearly he was off his psych meds, and it cost him and the Dungy family dearly.  Considering that he attempted to take his life back in October (purposeful drug overdose in which he called parametics), the fact that there were no psychotropic drugs in his system is puzzling.

~I wonder why he was allowed to continue living on his own and attend school when he tried to kill himself before?  A suicide attempt speaks to severe emotional problems that call for intensive help, withdrawal from school, and being in the care of a guardian.

~One article said that he suffered a concussion several years ago when he was standing on his father's sideline and some football players came careening out-of-bounds and crashing into him.  Concussions can predispose one to depression.  Just a theory...

~He didn't look like the rest of the Dungy children.  Was he a child from a previous relationship?  Are all 5 of those kids the children of Dungy and his current wife?  A 21-year-old, a (deceased) 19-year-old, a 13-year-old...then a 5-year-old and a 4-year old.  I wonder...

According to imdb.com, (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1763081/bio) the Dungys have been married since 1982.
