Title: So my car got vandalized.
Post by: PhillyPhanInDC on December 15, 2005, 11:43:40 AM
I live in a pretty decent area of Northern Virginia, in a mid to higher end priced apartment complex. There is very little crime, and very few teenaged kids that live in about a ten block radius of my apartment complex. I woke up this morning, got ready to go to work, and went out to start the car to get it warmed up. As I was walking to the car I noticed the back driver's side tire was flat. That's zesty. It's happened before I think, I can fix this and probably not be late. So as I get closer to the car, I notice the car next to me has two flats on the passenger side. That's when I knew what had happened. I walked around to the other side of my car, and the front passenger tire had been slashed too. The car on the right side of my car, a nice new BMW, had all four of it's tires slashed as well. My car is not what you'd call a "nice ride", it's an 05 Civic. Not going to turn any heads, but the damn tires (and car) only have/had 10,000 miles on them  :boom. To make a long story short, the guy across from my complex that owns a shop was nice enough to tow everyone's cars over to his place free of charge, and only charged us half the normal labor rate. Filled out the police reports, called the insurance co., and all that jazz. Now I am sitting at work, and am still raging farging mad. I need some advice. I need to figure out how to find the iceholes that did this. The cops told me I really didn't have much of a chance, but that doesn't preclude me from trying anyway. Short of sitting in a tree all night with some binoculars, anyone have any ideas on the best way to figure out who would have done this?  >:( >:( >:(

In philly my car was vandalized multiple times.  Windows smashed twice, keyed up etc.   I found a cheap auto glass place in West Philly that charged about a 1/3rd of the price the dealership wanted to replace the windows.   Short of having a night vision camera recording your call all night it's gonna be hard to catch em, and thats if they come ever come back and hit it up twice.

soory to say, but you are shtein out of luck unless you catch them red handed.

a few years ago when i lived in manayunk, i came out to my car that had 2 windows shattered (one was the back windshield), and blood all over the side.

there was a police report and insurance claim. and they in fact caught the kids that did this (apparently they stole bikes up the hill, rode down and lost control, one was in the hospital). but there was nothing i could do other than get a "no fault" on my insurance. even if i took them to small claims, it wouldnt have been worth it.

Advice:  Keep an eye out for kids/teens you haven't seen around the complex lately.  They may want to be in the area today to see some reactions from people or to see if people have fixed up their work.

One other thing to take into consideration, is it hard to find parking in your complex?  Do you have assigned spots?  It could be someone from your building that got pissed off about the parking situation and took it out on everybody that got a spot before him/her.

Chances are, the person lives real close to you and may come back.

Either that, or it was RJS and he made a trip down to Virginia to harass you and your neighbors cuz he's like that.

What do you want to do?  Beat the person/people up?  Turn them in to the cops?  I mean, let's say you find out who did this.  What do you imagine you'll do at that point?

Regarding how you find who did it, make sure there isn't any surveillance tape of the parking lot, or of any area close to it.  If a gang of kids did this, perhaps they walked by the camera at the 7-11 next door on their way to the lot?  If they did, the tape woulnd't prove anything, but it might give you a better direction to search it out.  If you want to spend some money, hire a private detective.   Are there any bums or crackheads in your neighborhood?  They might be useful for information.  Even a few dollars can get you high, so the decision between saying what you know in order to get the money you need to get high, and keeping a secret isn't a difficult one for an addict.  Could you set up a webcam?  Can you see the lot from your flat?

I'd say drop it and move on.  But if you won't drop it, let us know what happens.  I'm sure itll be worth a laugh no matter what.

Personally, I'd kneecap their asses.

I hate thieves.  I hate them and would definitely beat them to a pulp with a baseball bat.

Tires aren't cheap.  Well, exept for cheap tires.  But those aren't worth the money you pay for them.  So there you have it:  Tires aren't cheap.

After the premium, I doubt insurance is worth filing for this.  PhillyPhaninDC, you gonna get some relief from insurance, or just buy new tires?

when i had my windows busted, the replacement windows, carwash, and detail was $895, while my deductible was 750.

it wasnt worth the claim in the end since i wasnt going to follow up on any suits.

Fortunately for me, I have little fourteen inch tires on my Honda. The guy next to me who drives the BMW, a 330 with the sport package, had to drop $225 a tire. I called my insurance company, and they are going to reimburse me for the tires, but not the labor so it'll cost me a total of about $40.00. I talked to a cop later today, who said he knows some kids in the area who are normally in trouble like this, and he'd check them out. I probably wouldn't do much if I found them, but I'd be sure to let their parents know, and possibly seek some restitution from them, I know the two other people who were victims would probably want the same or possibly more, the guy with the BMW bough it about two weeks ago. The complex has big evergreen tires all around the perimeter and no businesses, 7-11, Wawa, etc close enough to help, and their is always plenty of parking, no assigned spots. While I have calmed down alot about the whole thing, it still farging baffles me why anyone would do something so stupid without a reason. I can understand stealing to a point, because at least they would be doing it to gain something. In the end, I'll put it in Karma's hands, and hope they get their's.

Fairfax. Fair Lakes is the names of the subdivision. Just off 66. Crystal City has really gone into the shteinter that last few years. Me and the wife are moving into our first house after the holidays, and I'll lock the damn car in the garage every night. Funny, as a kid growing up in Mayfair, my father's and mother's cars were never touched. If you did and someone told your parents, they would beat the living shtein out of you, then send you to the person' home you screwed with, and they could beat the shtein out of you. These kids parents, if they knew, would probably put them on time out or some shtein.

I thought about the DTC, but figured it couldn't be them for a coupe of reasons:

1. I didn't find any Natty Ice bottles laying around.

2. There was a Skins players "meet and greet" at some sports bar downtown in D.C last night until about 2:00AM, and the metro stops running around 11:00 during the week. Christ knows those gimps don't own any kind of vehicle(s).

3. I live too far from Joe Gibbs' old, flacid cock. They'd never stray so far away from it, for fear of losing their place in line.

Ha.  I'm sure the Fairfax police have a whole regiment on duty searching for these tire slashers.  They'll find em for you.  And then when they let you know who did it, you can ask them for your $40 dollars.  And then once they don't give it to you, you can just forget the whole thing ever happened.

Well, I've got news for you dipshtein. The cops caught one of the kids today, who in turn ratted on the other three (ages 14-15). There were a total of four, and according to the cops, they all live in a community about a half mile away from my complex. According to the detective I spoke with, they went to the school the kid attends to ask him some questions about another incident not too far from where I live, something about spray-painting a wall at the school, and before they asked him anything, he started to say how the whole thing wasn't his idea, he didn't cut the tires, yada yada. The police have all four kids at the station, which I just came from, I spoke to the parents, and said I not would press charges, but am expecting the kids to pay for the damages, etc. They were still waiting on my neighbor to get there (the BMW) when I left, he already told me he is going to seek some type of repayment for the damages, and press charges.

I think you should press charges.  Simply paying for the damage isn't enough.  Besides, if the kids aren't truly criminals, then they won't get into any more trouble and the charges will be wiped when they become adults.

On the other hand, if they are criminal fargs, then they'll have this incident on their record, as well as all the others they acquire, making it easier for the authorities to see that they've got some bad eggs on their hands.

Little shtein heads.

oh, and sue the pants off of them for the amount of stress this has caused you and the fear you now live in that someday your tires may be slashed again.  string the little fargers up!

Pressing charges just might be the thing that straightens their little asses out. Just hope that they aren't part of some retaliatory network that's going to throw molotov cocktails at your home.
Title: Re: So my car got vandalized.
Post by: PhillyPhanInDC on December 16, 2005, 01:53:34 PM
I was going to press charges, but after the first person did, the detective told me that I really didn't need to press any charges, because the evidence from all the cars that were damaged would be brought before the judge anyway, and because of their age, all of us pressing charges would only serve to make for more paperwork and not add on any additional punishment. Knowing who the little fargers are, having them pay for the tires, and will wind up having something on their juvenile record is good enough for me.
Title: Re: So my car got vandalized.
Post by: Diomedes on December 16, 2005, 01:59:48 PM
If someone else is pressing charges, and that party actually sees the charges through to the point of hauling those kids into court and getting something onto their juvenile record, then I can understand why you would choose not to press charges yourself.  Me, I'd press charges myself in addition, just to make sure the case doesn't get lost, tossed out, or fail to affect the kids because the other plaintiff doesn't follow through.

Anyway, good news, and good luck!

I'm happy for you...but its just weird. If I was one of the kids...I'd stay the farg shut up. You can tell these are little shteins who probably aren't criminal and maybe this shtein on their record will scare them back where they need to be. On this side of stupid.

at which point does one come to a decision on which authority is to be respected, and which does not? maybe they plan on leaving the country where tire slashers can run free all day and knife some rubber until the sun goes down, to look foreward to doing it all again tomorrow.
