Title: Tivo and Vonage Problems
Post by: Father Demon on December 02, 2005, 12:24:02 AM
I just got Vonage last Friday, and thought I had no problems...  until today, when I noticed my Tivo programming information hasn't been updated since the day before I got Vonage.  It shows last call as "Call failed."  My service is cable, not satellite.

When I used my "Check Call" feature, it gets to the dial part, and returns the error "Call cannot connect."

I did a little research on Google, and found out I'm supposed to turn off Dial Tone Detection, turn off Phone Available Detection, and prefix my calls with *99 (to let Vonage this is a data call).  I did all this, and tested it.  What I found out is that dialing a *99 prefix causes Vonage to return a fast busy.

The lastthing I have found is that a cheap external modem connected directly to mt Tivo 'might' fix the problem.  Before I go that route, I need to ask...

Anyone on here that has both Tivo and Vonage -- how did you get Tivo updates to work?

connect the tivo to the internet, rather than phone.

My DVR updates nicely right through the cable.  Hopefully, you can set it up the way Wingspan recommends.

if you have wireless, and a tivo series 2, it is insanely simple...just get a usb wireless network adapter. i don't have vonage or anything, but connecting the tivo to your broadband (whether it's DSL or Cable makes no difference) is the way to go with the online scheduling and filesharing capabilities.

It is confirmed that TiVo series 2 units will not work using Vonage for dial-up.  Old series one units used to work, but I think they locked out lower baud rates on the series 2 units to save themselves money on dial-up costs.

If you have vonage, you have broadband - as has been mentioned, get a USB network adapter for your TiVo and all of your problems go away :)
