Title: Smart way to quit a job
Post by: satoshi on November 11, 2005, 09:48:00 PM
I'm just going to quit my job next Feb or Mar. So, does anyone know how to say that to the boss in a good manner? ???

American custom is to tell your boss "Take this job and shove it up your ass."

Okay, now a little more serious:  Just give them plenty of notice, and have a respectable story on hand, even if it's a lie.  Two weeks notice is minimum.  Depending on what you do, you'll probably want to give them a little more notice than that, but I wouldn't tell anyone more than four weeks ahead.  Do your job well until you go, make sure you document everything you do so that the person who takes over the job has somewhere to start from.  This will make it easier for them to give you an enthusiastic recommendation when the next gig calls them for a reference.

Kick him in the nuts and then ask him for a pay raise while he's on the ground crying.  You'll probably get the pay raise in which case you won't have to worry about quitting.  Or you'll get arrested and/or fired.  Either way, you won't have to quit.

Thanks. My concern is all about the reason. Well, the reason is very clear: I will be hired by my hometown city office next April. Should I say that? Or just lie like I'm going to Stanford for MBA?

It's none of their business where you're going next.  Just give them some kind of reason that isn't insulting, and it doesn't matter if you're lying or not.

Does this mean you are going back to Japan?
