Quoteuspended Eagle Owens got in a fight with Douglas
Sunday, November 06, 2005
By MARK ECKEL
Staff Writer
PHILADELPHIA - When Terrell Owens acted up in training camp, called out offensive coordinator Brad Childress and criticized quarterback Donovan McNabb, he was sent home for a week, but not suspended.
When Owens wore a Michael Irvin Dallas Cowboys throwback jersey after the Eagles lost to the Cowboys, 33-10, at Texas Stadium disrespecting anyone who ever played for or cheered for the Eagles, not only was he not reprimanded, head coach Andy Reid condoned his actions.
Owens went beyond all of that, when according to very reliable sources, he got into a fistfight with former Eagles defensive end and current team ambassador Hugh Douglas this past week in front of several teammates. On top of that he said the team "lacked class" in an interview with ESPN.
The Eagles announced yesterday in a statement that Owens was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.
According to one of the sources the Owens-Douglas fight "was like WWE Smackdown."
Another source said both men threw at least two punches during the altercation and when it was over Owens challenged quarterback Donovan McNabb first and then everyone else in the room saying, "You want some. Anyone else want some."
Owens and Douglas, who coincidentally share the same agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have been at odds since training camp and almost got into an altercation in an elevator at Lehigh University.
When Owens demanded a new contract and threatened to hold out of camp, Douglas was one of the few players to step forward and say he should honor his current contract.
The Eagles refused to comment about the situation, other than the statement that revealed the suspension.
Owens was not at yesterday morning's walk-through and did not accompany the team on its trip to Washington for tonight's game, which will be nationally-televised on Owens' favorite station, ESPN.
Don't be shocked, however, if he shows up on air during the telecast.
While the Eagles were silent, around the league there were some smiles.
"This is exactly what he did his last year in San Francisco," one NFC man said. "That's when he started ripping Jeff Garcia every week. He never changed. He's the same guy."
An AFC personnel man also took enjoyment from the Eagles suffering.
"The only reason this didn't happen last year is because they were winning," he said. "All it takes is a couple of losses for this guy to show his true colors. But the Eagles are getting what they deserve."
According to Article VIII of the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team can last a maximum of four games. There are nine games left in the Eagles season.
Owens, if the suspension is without pay, will likely appeal to get back the $205,882 per game he would lose.
The team, however, could do what Tampa Bay did with wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson during the 2003 season.
Tampa did not "suspend" Johnson, but head coach Jon Gruden sent him home for the season with six games remaining and listed him as an inactive each week. Johnson was paid his full salary, and was traded to Dallas, in exchange for wide receiver Joey Galloway after the season.
If you're wondering what the Eagles might do with Owens after the season, forget the trade route. He's due a $7.5 million bonus in March. The team will surely release him rather than pay him and hope for a trade.
Owens, knowing a suspension was possible, talked about it during his 20-minute Miami-based radio show, which is aired locally on WIP, Friday night.
"Hey, if I am suspended, I am," he said, asking to be called Javier during the show, because he felt he had been sent to the witness protection program. "That would be a discredit to the team and obviously it would hurt the team. It would be a sad situation. Those guys are going to do the best to win the game and I'll be behind those guys 100 percent."
Owens leads the Eagles in receptions with 47, in receiving yards with 763 and in touchdowns with six. He ranks third in the league in both receptions and yards and is second in receiving touchdowns.
In Owens' absence, Greg Lewis, a first-time starter this year, who did not even start in college at the University of Illinois, will be the team's No. 1 receiver. In seven games this season, Lewis has 26 receptions for 284 yards and one touchdown.
Rookie Reggie Brown, the team's second-round pick out of the University of Georgia, will make his first NFL start. Brown, as the team's No. 3 receiver, has nine catches for 108 yards and is still looking for his first touchdown.
Billy McMullen (two catches, 60 yards) and former taterskin Darnerien McCants (one catch, 22 yards) will be the No. 3 and No. 4 receivers.
Owens' suspension ends a strange week that began with an ankle injury he suffered in last week's 49-21 loss to Denver.
After the game in the team locker room, word leaked that Owens injured his ankle even though he was not on the team's post-game report. An Eagles official was asked about the injury and re-stated that Owens was not on the report.
Monday, Reid did add Owens to the injury report and said he would undergo a MRI on his ankle.
Owens missed Wednesday's practice and was listed as doubtful for tonight's game. As only he can heal, Owens was back at practice, Thursday, and was upgraded to questionable.
Thursday night when parts of his interview ran on ESPN's SportsCenter, the trouble began.
Owens agreed with his friend, Irvin, that if Green Bay's Brett Favre was the Eagles quarterback the team would be undefeated.
He did mention that if McNabb was healthy the team would have a better record as well.
What seemed to get him in trouble were his statements regarding the Eagles refusal to make a big deal out of his 100th receiving touchdown, which he scored at home against San Diego.
"That right there just shows you the type of class and integrity that they claim not to be," Owens said. "They claim to be first class and the best organization. It's an embarrassment. It just shows the lack of class they have.
"My publicist talked to the head P.R. guy (Derek Boyko) and they made an excuse they didn't recognize it was coming. But that was a blatant lie. Had it been someone else, they probably would have popped fireworks around the stadium."
This is the second time in his career Owens has been suspended. Former San Francisco head coach Steve Mariucci suspended him for one game after he danced on the star at Texas Stadium.
I hope Hugh kicked that Hoyda's fargin ass.

Wow.
I guess no one won? Damn Eckel for leaving that out!
Hugh was talking about putting his hands on him this week on the radio too.
Wouldn't surprise me, yet anything that comes from Eckel's sources are very Kevin Johnson-ish. ;)
Sounds like Hugh lost the fight if TO was challenging Donovan after the altercation.
Hugh is earning his Badassador title.
We need more details. Hopefully they come out soon...
What day was it on?
What did other players say/do?
Was it in the locker room?
I bet TO was kicking like a little girl. He looked fine on TV, so Hugh couldn't have beat him that bad.
This farging rules.
Hugh is my goddamned hero.
It was probably pushing and shoving.
sounds like it was one of those fights where both parties throw some wild punches that missed everything before the spectators grab em and its over in a flash.
Mort says:
Hugh walked in the trainers room on Wednesday and said "I know there are some people in the room faking injuries" and then they got into a "shoving match/fight". And then he said what Eckel said about TO calling everyone else out.
Michael Irvin is T.O's lone supporter now. He's saying the punishment didn't fit the crime, the Eagles were wrong to suspend T.O... blah, blah, blah.
farging piece of shtein cokehead bitch.

QuoteEagles | Owens Brushes off Douglas - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 2 Aug 2005 20:01:10 -0700
Ashley Fox, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles WR Terrell Owens was kneeling away from the fray, quiet and alone at practice Tuesday, August 2, when DE Hugh Douglas approached him. Douglas essentially extended his hand to Owens. Owens hardly looked at Douglas as he got up and walked away, leaving the brushed-off Douglas less than happy. "I was just trying to be nice," Douglas said later, after LB Jeremiah Trotter calmed him down, told him to give Owens some time, and promised to talk to the disgruntled wide receiver. "He's in a situation where he's trying to get something done, so he's probably a little upset. In a situation like that, I think the best thing to do is give him some space and let him work it out."
Hugh should have beat TO then and there.

Is it just me or is anyone else sick to their stomach over this?
Why does this kind of shtein always happen to us?

My idea: TO never wears an Eagle uniform again -- he disgraced it enough already. They Eagles should retire his number, but in a disgrace. His uniform is displayed where every Sunday, people can walk by it and spit on it. And for good measure, each and every urinal and john should have the number 81 at the bottom.

the only reason i question this story is because if its even 1% true how does this suspension have an indefinitely tag on it

Horseface (Shannon Sharpe) talked to Hugh an hour ago...
Hugh walks into the training room and TO gets up from the table saying he doesn't want to be in the room with a "hater" and goes to sit in the whirlpool. Words were exchanged and TO got out of the pool, put his shoes on and blows were exchanged.
That according to Sharpe.

Quotehe Terrell Owens' saga has taken perhaps its most absurd turn yet. While he was suspended for comments made on Thursday, that was not his most outrageous action of that day.
Owens actually fought former Eagle Pro Bowl DE and current Eagles' ambassador Hugh Douglas in the team's rehab room late and then issued a challenge to fight several other teammates afterward. The Trenton Times first reported the story Sunday morning.
NFL Week 9
Those present told FOXSports.com, while Owens was in the pool rehabilitating his injured ankle, Douglas came into the area and began to get on the outspoken wide receiver. The two jawed back and forth before, believe it or not, Owens got out of the pool and went to get his sneakers on in order to get traction to throw some blows.
When he came back, with shoes on, Owens and Douglas started swinging. Douglas threw a shot, which missed, then Owens threw five or six punches and landed a couple.
Several players, most getting treatment, tried to separate the pair but Owens started throwing those players off of him to get at Douglas again. Owens shed his teammates and kept going after Douglas before L.J. Smith got Douglas into another area. One swing by Owens was described as a shot that would have done major damage had it landed.
The fight, which was deemed "unbelievable" by some present is just the latest tale in the bizarre soap opera that has been Terrell Owens' season. However, Owens' bizarre afternoon didn't end there.
Following his fight with Douglas, a still-amped Owens walked into the locker room and issued a challenge to fight any player who wants to continue to talk behind his back. Although there were several players in the locker room, most believed his challenge was directed toward quarterback Donovan McNabb.
Basically, Owens said, and this is to paraphrase, that anyone else who talks behind his back who wants to step up do it now, this is the time to take him on and he could handle it the way he did with Douglas. When nobody moved from their stools, Owens said something to the effect of, "That's what I thought" and walked out.
This is not the first time Owens and Douglas got into a heated exchange although it's the first time punches were thrown. During training camp FOXSports.com first reported that Owens and Douglas had a verbal altercation in an elevator with Donovan McNabb regarding the trio's tumultuous relationship. At the time, Douglas threatened to hit Owens but didn't follow through.
On Saturday the team suspended Owens indefinitely and while the team has made no absolute decision on his future, several Eagles say they find it hard to believe he will ever re-join the team. However, head coach Andy Reid has not said this yet and some also believe that as long as he gives a true apology to McNabb and the team he may be allowed back. However, it's difficult to believe that Owens would conform to this.
Terrell Owens will have to sit out today's game "for conduct detrimental to the team." (Rusty Kennedy / Associated Press)
The team suspended him on Saturday for what they deemed "conduct detrimental to the team." According to sources, head coach Andy Reid wanted an apology from Owens publicly and then an apology to the team. Owens, sources say, was suspended because he couldn't conform with Reid's portion of the request to apologize to his team.
The apology he was looking for were a direct result of comments he made regarding the team's lack of publicly recognizing his 100th career TD catch a couple of weeks ago.
"I've had an opportunity to talk with the Eagles organization and I have learned that the team does not recognize individual achievements," Owens said in a prepared statement. "It has been brought to my attention that I have offended the organization and my teammates. Therefore, I would like to apologize for any derogatory comments toward them."
The brawl with Douglas and the ensuing challenge to his teammates to another fight was just another incident that has "worn us all out" according to teammates. Several teammates truly like Owens and all respect his play but many others inside the locker room and organization are simply exhausted by the weekly soap opera that has become what seems like a scheduled distraction.
Owens is expected to make in excess of $3.5 million in pay which means for every game the team suspends him without pay, he would lose more than $200,000 per week. The team may elect to go the Keyshawn Johnson route – pay him to stay away.
I suspect this, and not the interview, was the bigger reason for the suspension.

I thought the same thing. I was wondering who the little, bitter bitch was.
-- "I apologize for 'whatever' happened in the training room." ... it's not how adult men should handle their differences.... says the media reports are exaggerated and no punches ever landed (typical Eckel ::) )
-- TO doesn't necessarily have a problem with Donovan ... thinks he has a problem with QBs in general (attention, money, etc.)
-- He and TO never got along and immediately saw things take a turn for the worst... says the team "didn't realize how crazy he is"
-- says that with the team having more and more younger players every year, McNabb needs to continue to show poise and class
-- Rosenhaus told TO to do the apology
-- McNabb's problem isn't the injury...he's not going through his progressions...keeps looking at 1 WR instead of looking for the open man

Thanks, Ed...
I like how Rosenhaus tried to save face and TO just up and farged that up too.
"TO, go apologize and make sure you don't get in trouble. You get in trouble and you lose whatever few teams will want you"
So the clown goes out and fights, calls out the entire team and refuses to apologize.
Jeez. :-D
The ESPN interview and apology happened after the locker room incident...
I like my version better. :D
Instead of bringing doctors on DNL and ESPN to diagnose McNabb, we should bring in a psychiatrist to diagnose what is wrong with TO.

QuoteDouglas apologetic about run-in with T.O.
By MIKE KERN
kernm@phillynews.com
At just after 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Hugh Douglas went on the radio from Chickie's & Pete's in South Philadelphia with WIP host Anthony Gargano, to begin a 4-hour shift that would lead up to the Eagles-taterskins game.
There was some applause, and some boos. Douglas just smiled. When Terrell Owens is involved, it's never cut and dried.
Just before he talked to the peeps across the Delaware Valley, Douglas spoke about the situation that hit national TV around midday and was first reported in the Trenton Times. Namely, that the former defensive end turned team ambassador and maybe the best wide receiver in the NFL had traded punches last week in the Birds' training room.
"It's not true," said Douglas, who said on air that there were no punches landed. "It wasn't as big as everyone is trying to make it out to be, it really wasn't.
"The sad part about the situation is, it got to this point, whatever happened. And I apologize for it."
He would apologize again, during the show's first break.
"This is not what you want kids to see. I would like to apologize to my former teammates and the city of Philadelphia," he said, "because this situation, it goes beyond football. It's just sad, and it's obvious [Owens] needs counseling."
Then he addressed the state of the team.
"It's still solid," Douglas insisted. "It's not over with. There's still a chance that they can right this ship and get things going. He's a great receiver, but he's also a troubled soul. Something's not right."
And where do the Birds go from here? Is Owens still a part of their future?
"That's not my call," Douglas explained. "Whatever 'Big Red' [coach Andy Reid] wants to do, I stand behind him."
So what about Donovan McNabb's role in the recovery process?
"You have to ask Donovan that question," he hedged. "I'm not a mind reader. I really don't know what he does at this point. I'm pretty sure he knows he has to take the reins and get it going."
During the show, Gargano asked Douglas about criticism being levied on leaders of the team for not confronting Owens as a group.
"Most of the leaders on the team felt that T.O.'s a grown man and he needed to handle himself accordingly," Douglas said. "But it was a situation where we didn't know how crazy this man was, you know what I mean? We just didn't know how many issues this man had and it just got out of hand. I think everybody was sitting around like, 'Wow, I didn't know this man was this crazy.' "
Hugh is the farging man.
Let's put Hugh back on the banner just for the hell of it! :D

Hugh on the banner bodyslamming TO!!
With Hollis watching in the background, grinning like he farted.
Awesome. Make it happen.
I wonder if TO's bodyguard was involved.
Not like it matters now or anything but...
There was a blurb in one of the papers today that said that Hugh was telling guys in the trainers room that callers on WIP were ripping To and accusing him of faking it since he was not on the injury report after the Denver game and Hugh was saying how he was defending TO and how that injuries sometimes don't appear until the morning after.
TO apparently walked in mid-story and only heard Hugh saying that TO was faking it and thought he was ripping him so he wanted to box.
Hugh on the banner bodyslamming TO!!
you do know that TO was naked during the fight??
What? :-D
So he took time to put on shoes to get traction but not put on some pants?

No.
Hugh on the banner bodyslamming a censored T.O.
Ha, ha - "a censored T.O." I am the most ironeous.
Maybe Garthia should be asked if he thinks TO is gay because he wrestles men, nude, in locker rooms.
anyone know why Hugh Douglas still has a job after this fight? considering that owens is pretty much gone, why no backlash against douglas?
i dont know if it's in this thread or not, but Hugh is no angel in this...and if this isnt a 1st time altercation with Hugh and TO? i would think to be fair, (and to even set precedent with the league) that they would take some disciplinary action vs Douglas along with TO.
I really don't see the Front office punishing Hugh for this, maybe a slap on the wrist, but not more then that. He at least appologized right away for the incident to the team, and players.

I would have had more respect for you if you did. Or at least some level of fear and awe and respect for style and form.
Hugh owns you. All hail Hugh! Bitches.
