Title: What's your favorite planet?
Post by: hbionic on November 01, 2005, 06:04:36 AM
I like Earth...but if I had to choose a different one, I'd choose saturn because it has a sweet as ring around it and would be sweet if it could be used to saw other planets in half if it got pissed at them.  :yay

My favorite planet is Pluto, because it's very very far away, and very very cold.  Like my little black heart.

Neptune because of it's funky rings and backwards moon.

Right planet, wrong reasons, Dio. Pluto is best because it's eccentric, defies being categorized (note the efforts of troglodyte astronomers in recent years to have it declassified as a planet - ha, I say! HA!), and now they find it has two more moons - which it shouldn't have and, therefore, leaves the astronomical crowd scratching their collective heads.

Of course, my allegiance could change if the newly discovered prospective tenth planet is recognized as a planet and is allowed to officially keep the name of Xena.  8)

That's a good choice, too. Well, after Pluto and Xena, of course!  ;)

Actually, fan, it isn't so much that the extra Pluto moons shouldn't be there at all but rather how the hell they got there that causes the scientific difficulty.  Alan Stern had been pushing the idea that Pluto had more than one moon for awhile now and he had to fight to get the authorization for Hubble to image Pluto for the express purpose of looking for those moons for over a year.  Still, it makes Pluto and Charon even more exotic than they already were and should provide additional purpose for New Horizons. 8)

Thanks for the clarification, Hayz. I'd just read about the moons being discovered this morning but wasn't up on the background. But agreed, the discovery of the moons just makes Pluto all the more interesting, no matter the approach!  8)
