Title: Seahawks Safety Ken Hamlin In Serious Condition
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on October 17, 2005, 06:03:36 PM
QuoteHAMLIN IN SERIOUS BUT STABLE CONDITION

The Seattle Seahawks have announced that safety Ken Hamlin is in serious but stable condition after suffering a skull fracture due to an "assault."  He is being described as "the victim of a crime."  No further details were provided regarding the incident that resulted in Hamlin's injuries.

Hamlin has a blood clot on his brain and bruising, which doctors will monitor over the next 24-to-48 hours in order to determine whether the clot will grow.  For now, surgery is not expected.

Hamlin is doing a lot of sleeping, and when awake is confused.

The veteran safety also has a fracture of his right hand.

Radio reports from Seattle indicate that the injuries were the result of an altercation at an area night club after the Seahawks' 42-10 win over the Texans.

Damn

QuoteHAMLIN HOSPITALIZED

Jose Romero of The Seattle Times reports that Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin was admitted to an area hospital late Sunday or early Monday with injuries that apparently were not sustained in Sunday night's home win over the Texans.

A reader tells us that Seattle radio stations are reporting that Hamlin was struck over the head with pipe during a fight at a night club.

The team, per Romer, plans to issue a statement later in the day on Monday.  The issue undoubtedly will be addressed by coach Mike Holmgren in a press conference due to commence at 5:15 p.m. EDT

Seahawks' Hamlin still in Harborview after assault

By Jose Romero

Seattle Times staff reporter

KIRKLAND — Seahawks free safety Ken Hamlin is in the trauma unit of Harborview Medical Center today, the victim of an assault outside a downtown Seattle nightclub early this morning.

Dr. Stan Herring, one of the team's physicians, said Hamlin has a small blood clot on the left side of his brain and bruising of the brain tissue. He also has a skull fracture that appears to be caused by being struck in the head with a blunt object.

Hamlin also has a broken right hand. He's in serious condition but stable and has to be awakened periodically, though he is aware where he is and knows family is coming to see him.

An incident report from the Seattle Police Department said police responded at 2:04 a.m. today to a disturbance at the intersection of 1st Avenue South and South Main Street. According to the report, Hamlin was discovered on the ground and told police his head, neck and chest areas were in severe pain. The Seattle Fire Department was called to the scene and treated Hamlin, who was taken to Harborview.

Hamlin told police he didn't remember what had happened.

A witness at the scene, described as Hamlin's girlfriend, said she and Hamlin were leaving the club and were on the sidewalk when Hamlin placed his hand on a man in front of him and said, "Excuse me." The witness said Hamlin and the man began pushing each other after the man said something to Hamlin. After Hamlin punched the man in the face, another man approached Hamlin and hit him with his right forearm, knocking him to the ground.

The two men who had been involved with Hamlin then began fighting with others while Hamlin was on the ground. Other witnesses told police that one of the two men then picked up a street sign and hit Hamlin while he was on the ground. Police searched unsuccessfully for the two men at the scene.

Hamlin's agent, J. Lawrence Temple, said he is flying from Austin, Texas to Seattle to check on Hamlin, but said, "the [medical] reports I'm getting are that things are pretty good."

Hamlin, 24, made five tackles in the Seahawks' 42-10 victory over Houston last night at Qwest Field.

"His spirits are good considering the situation," Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said in a statement released by the team. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Ken and his family."

Hamlin was able to phone coach Mike Holmgren and said he was sorry, Holmgren said. Marquand Manuel will start in Hamlin's place against the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday at Qwest Field.

It was unclear whether any other Seahawks were at the nightclub when the assault took place.

October 18, 2005 AP - Oct 17, 11:24 pm EDT KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) -- The Seattle Seahawks are more concerned with Ken Hamlin's health than when -- or if -- he'll be able to rejoin the team.

The starting free safety was in serious but stable condition early Tuesday with a fractured skull and other head injuries following a fight outside a downtown Seattle nightclub.

``It's pretty tough,'' said cornerback Marcus Trufant, whose locker is next to Hamlin's. ``I'm very concerned about his health and I'm just hoping and praying that everything goes well.''

Hamlin's injuries included a small blood clot and bruising of brain tissue. He was to remain in intensive care for the next day or two, team physician Stan Herring said. Herring said doctors are waking up Hamlin every hour or two to ensure he is still stable.

The fight may have also involved a homicide, according to a published report. A 31-year-old man who was killed near the city's Seward Park on Monday morning was involved in the fight with Hamlin, a man claiming to be the brother of the victim told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer for a story published Tuesday.

Tramaine Isabell saw video of the fight on Seattle TV newscasts and identified one of the men as his brother, Terrell Milam. Isabell told the newspaper the video showed Milam punching Hamlin and knocking him to the ground, and that Milam was the man found dead by a jogger three hours later near Seward Park.

Police spokesman Rich Pruitt confirmed on his office phone voice mail early Tuesday morning that there was a homicide in south Seattle on Monday morning. He also told the newspaper that police were interested in speaking to Isabell, but added, ``At this time, we have no proof there is a connection'' between the death and Hamlin's assault.

According to a police report, Hamlin and his girlfriend were leaving Larry's Nightclub in the Pioneer Square section of Seattle at about 2 a.m. Monday, several hours after the Seahawks defeated the Houston Texans.

The girlfriend told officers that Hamlin placed his hand on another man's back and said, ``Excuse me.'' The man told Hamlin to stop pushing, and the men began shoving each other.

According to the report, Hamlin then punched the man in the face; Herring said Hamlin has a fractured right hand. Another man struck Hamlin with his forearm, knocking him down, before the two men began fighting with other men nearby.

Witnesses provided the names of two men to police but there had been no arrests, Seattle police spokeswoman Debra Brown said Monday.

The club's owner, Larry Culp, said his security guards kept Hamlin separated from the two suspects outside for about 15 minutes as the bar was emptying at closing time. He said guards tried to restrain Hamlin several times and the other man started to back down, but ``as the head of my security team turned his head, (Hamlin) went after him.

``He had plenty of chances to walk away from this incident,'' Culp said, adding Hamlin ``went out of his way'' to provoke a fight.

Culp released a security videotape showing Hamlin breaking free from club security guards and pursuing the suspects after the initial altercation subsided.

Hamlin was found lying in an intersection outside the club a few blocks north of Qwest Field, surrounded by a crowd of people

Hamlin told the officers he was in a lot of pain, and when asked what happened, he said, ``I don't remember.''

The report said Hamlin did not appear intoxicated.

Seahawks president Tim Ruskell issued a statement Monday that said, in part: ``We are working in concert with the Seattle Police Department. The fact that this is an active assault investigation prevents us from further comment at this time.''

``The only difficulty I have with this is, it's such a waste,'' Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. ``It seems rather pointless. It's not like you are playing a football game and all of a sudden you get hit and you get injured.

``It's one of those things that shouldn't have happened.''

Holmgren talked to his team about it in an afternoon meeting. The NFC West-leading Seahawks then said a team prayer for Hamlin.

Holmgren said Marquand Manuel, a fourth-year veteran from Florida, will replace Hamlin and make his first career start Sunday against Dallas.

Hamlin had five tackles in Seattle's 42-10 win over Houston.

And here is footage from the club's security camera, narrated by the owner of the club. It looks as though it had a chance to be over and done with.
