Does anyone else get sick and tired of having to explain why you're an Eagles fan just because you aren't from Philly? It's one thing to be asked from time to time, but I had to defend myself three friggin' times yesterday at the bar while watching the game. Two of the times i received a "sure you are" look which made me smile.
I know bandwagoners are irritating as all hell, but it's not like I was wearing a brand new TO jersey and Eagles hat straight out of the box. Hell, I had on my CF shirt and hat that should probably be thrown into the sun because all of the white is now yellow and it looks like it's been run over repeatedly on the expressway.
I think from now on I'll just say "yes, now stop asking me questions so I can watch the game". Perhaps a swift jump kick to the side of the head will convince them. The crazy old Raiders fan next to me did nothing but grunt/cheer while sipping white wine, but no one bothered to ask him why he was a Raiders fan.
SONSABITCHES! >:(

I usually don't get asked if I'm from Philly. Even if I did I'd likely say "no, now stop bothering me", unless I was in a chatty mood.
Lad, I am with you 1000%.
I grew up moving from town to town b/c my parents both work for the government. I was born in Hershey and twice lived in Harrisburg, but never lived in the Philly area and spent most of my life outside of DC. People ask me ALL THE GODDAMMNED TIME why I'm a Philly fan. Assume that I'm a bandwagoner, etc. Fact is, my dad grew up in Eastern PA (Kennett Square and Berwick) and I just grew up rooting for his teams since I didn't ever have a 'home-team' per se (I guess I could have adopted the Skins but then my father would have disowned me and I would have been forced to punch myself in the groin every minute of my life).
I feel your pain.
its simple...just lie

Kennett Square - Home of the Mushroom Festival!! Now we know the rest of the story about rjs! Thanks for the insight man!
Family moved from Pa to central NY 50 years ago. So anybody that I give a damn about knowing the answer, knew it a long time ago.
The special times were when someone that was a fan of some other out of state team would ask me that question. Only answer they would ever get from me was;
Look, I know that you need me to give you the reasons why I'm an Eagles fan to validate your reason for being a (whatever) fan. But lets face reality, there can be no logical reason why anyone would want to be a fan of (whoever). That would normally be the end of the discussion. Happy to say I had the opportunity to hear my son blast a cowpuke fan with the same type answer. My boy put a smile on his papa's face.
Ah, don't sweat it, Lad. At least you root for one of the Chicago baseball teams...oh wait.... :-X
My response in my 8 years in NY and 3 in LA?
"I've been an Eagles fan my whole life. Now farg you, go away."
They pretty much believed me after that comment.
Do I feel your pain!
Been an Eagles fan since the late 80's and living in Canada (Regina, SK) I've been accused of being an bandwagon jumper since the Eagles are doing so well and I find it insulting. Why should I have to "prove" I've been an Eagles fan since the days of Randall, Reggie (oh and explain yes he played for Philly), Jerome, Simmons, Byars, Jackson, Allen, Waters, Joyner .. .
Tell them to farg off, then they usually assume i'm from the Philly area because of the attitude. Damn stereotypes.

I'd rather be shot than watch baseball.
I think that if you are a Yankees fan, then pretty much everyone else in America that isn't a Yankees fan hates you. But hey, at least if you travel abroad, you got plenty of Yankee lovers out there.
Alot of people in my area who are sport fans know I've been an EAGLE fan forever so I don't get much heat. It's the new ones that come up to me wearing Eagle gear and say " oh you are a fan too?" I usually ask how long have you been an Eagle fan and 4 years is the longest I've got.I feel like saying don't put me in your category. You should experience some lean years before you appreciate what's going on.

I only have to answer when I encounter Americans while wearing my Trotter jersey (and I have had it since before he went to the (NC-17)'s). In fact I would not be surprised if I had the only Trotter jersey in the country.
A majority of Eagle fans that I met are true blue, die-hard fans. Even out here in Hawaii. No band wagoneers. My family is from Hawaii but I was born in Gladwyne while my father was working in Camden for Campbell Soup. We moved back here when I was just about a year old. I tell people that little tid-bit and they understand my passion. Been a diehard since 1971 when I was 9 years old. My first jersey I ever owned I bought with my dad at JC Penny. It was a #18 Ben Hawkins. It didn't have his name on it but it was the days when Penny's used to sell NFL gear. I actually bought the the old white with green wings helmet at Penny's. I loved that thing. Hardest part growing up for me was that my best freind was a die-hard Cowboy fan. He was actually pretty cool about it. He's a USC grad so the Trojans encompass his whole life now. I am not kidding.
I explain that all time the time. Annoying as hell.
Plus people ask me why im an Astros fan too. "oh you like them because they were in 1st place for a bit last year"
........no.
Yeah, I had to "explain" myself one time at the sports bar in ATL during the NFCCG last year. Moloko9 can tell you all about it, I'm sure. :-D
I grew up in Niagara Falls, NY (right outside of BUF), and once this Falcon fan I was arguing with got hold of that, he was calling me a bandwagoner left and right. He challenged me to name 5 Eagles that were playing before McNabb got drafted. When I named off (at the top of my lungs) about 15-20 and counting... without taking a breath, he came off of that garbage and said that I was really a Bills fan. That's a sore spot since I can't stand the Bills... so before long, we were in each other's face, jawing at each other for a good while... which kinda sucked cuz I really had to piss... which was the whole reason I walked by the guy in the first place.
Pretty much since that scene... I haven't had to explain why I'm an Eagles fan. ;D

Man.. you have NO idea. EVERYONE here is from somewhere else. Of course, it was a homegrown Georgia idiot I was dealing with that day though.
I say, "What Eagles?" and I immediately start to masturbate. That usually throws them off. Usually.

Everyone is a hypocrite in life including me. I say if you are a fan of a team and don't have ties to the city you are a fraud. Doesn't include Philly fans though because we're on the same team.
If you are a Cowboys fans from San Fran though, then you are a total fraud, and you can't ever be a true die-hard fan.
"You're not a real fan" arguments are gay in both real life and on the Internet, whether the subject is sports, music, movies, whatever. Gayer than men having anal sex with other men.
Wow. That's pretty gay.

I live in Rochester. It sucks.
I get that shtein all the time and I was born and raised about a half hour away from the Vet. Obviously my career choice has moved me around the country quite a bit and while I was living in Seattle and KC I had to deal with the whole bandwagon thing quite a bit.....especially the last few years while I was in KC. I used to let it bother me but now I just shrug it off. I really couldn't give two shteins what someone who I don't even know thinks. They just aren't worth my time. I know that I've been following this team for 2/3 of my life. I know I was still sporting hats and jerseys when they went 6-9-1 and 3-13. I know I've been there watching as if my life depended on it for the last 20 years. Week in and week out. Win, lose or draw, I've been there watching and I'll still be pimping Eagles Green 20 years from now. So anyone who wants to think I'm a bandwagoner can toss my salad, croutons and all.
You don't have to explain shtein to anybody. The moment you start explaining, they degrade your character. Tell em to farg off, you'll root for any team you please, and you're begging someone to stop you.
Funny that nobody ever questions my loyalty, guess they can tell a true fan from you bandwagon frauds. :P

Anyone who knew me growing up knows that I was always a diehard Eagles fan - especially because I was practically the only one in my school who was! (well, the only one who would openly admit it, anyway lol) Plus, we were season ticket holders and I went to all the games. All I have to tell people today is that I have been an Eagles fan since 1964, and they get wide-eyed and say "well, you've definitely paid your dues". ;)
It isn't all that unusual to find Eagles fans in this part of New Jersey, however (they are finally open about it, ahem), so I don't typically get questioned. I get far more questions about being a St. Louis Cardinals fan in baseball, and I patiently explain that dad brought his Redbird loyalty east with him from Oklahoma, and I grew up rooting for them, too (he didn't have a favorite pro football team until he and FS61 started going to see the Eagles, but he made up for lost time with his avid loyalty from that point on!).
I'm just a Bills fan in hiding. Go Losman!

64,
Still my favorite Eagle of all time followed by Haorld Carmichael, Bill Bradley, Frank LeMaster and Seth Joyner. Might get in trouble for not including our Hawaii boys Mel Tom(you and I discussed him before)Rich Miano and Jeff Sydner.
I've never had my loyalty to the Eagles questioned even though I live 1,000 miles from Philly.
I think people realize you're a true fan when they see you sitting and watching a team every week that eventually went 3-13. There are four of us who can say that in our circle of fans. The rest are either bandwagoners or newbies. In either case, I really don't give a shtein. When it comes to watching the Eagles, my policy is "the more the merrier."
I was born and raised in northeast Connecticut. I've loved the Eagles since I was about 4 years old. At the time, I liked the color green. And the idea of the big Eagle. I've rooted for them ever since. When I die, they family is going to laugh about what a bizarre thing it was that I latched onto the Eagles.
I could care less what other fans and strangers think.
My general sportbar drunkenness means I don't get accused of being a bandwagoner here in London. I like Philly and feel very much at home being an Eagles fan. It reminds me of Newcastle in England, where my mam's side of the family are from. Both blue-collar cities in the north east with a passion for their football teams.

I'm with you on that. I was ranting because i was tired of having to answer the "why are you an eagles fan?" question after hearing it three times during the game. It's not like i'm looking for people to watch the games with. They weren't there when i was trying to convince my friends that Bobby Hoying was the future and the monday night game vs. Dallas (when the eagles were shutout) was an abhorration. Trust me, if they had been they'd know i'm both and eagles fan & INSANE.
I'm the resident Eagle fan here in Packer country. I moved alot when I was a kid and lived across the bridge from Philly in Gibbstown when I was 5. I answer the same question about 4 times a week. At least I've lived here in WI for 8 years, and been a faithful fan for at least 15 years. I still have people ask why, but most people realize I'm not bandwagon. There is one local Italian Restaurant where the owner and his fam are from Jersey and their Iggle fans. It's nice when I wear my Dawk Jersey or McNabb they give me a free Heineken.
As far as answering the "why are you an Eagles fan" question goes, I usually just tell them what I said above. Generally, that suffices. It would be easier to say I'm from Philly just to shut them up, but that would be a lie, and I'm no good at lying. With my luck, I'd be talking to someone who actually is from Philly, and I'd look the fool.
As far as people who think or say that I'm not a true Philly fan, well so what? I'm often told that I'm not a true American, too.
all you have to say is, "my favorite player is Calvin Armstrong". When they ask who it is, you can say "you need to brush up on your Eagles roster, ya freakin BANDWAGONER!"
Andy Reid doensn't even know who Calvin Armstrong is...

Been an Eagles fan since 1977 and I was only 8 years of age! Lived in Gilman, IA at the time. Weekly readers were printed in Philly and they highlighted Philly athletes each week. I've never lived out of the midwest and I always get a look like why in the world would you root for the Eagles? Well, ViQueens, Chefs, and Bumbling Broncos just have never done it for me... I bleed Eagles green and then my Dad moves to Pottstown, PA and works in Valley Forge and I finally get to an actual game at the vet during Andy Reid's first year... now on Sunday, I'm going to my second EAGLES game at KC. I live in Nebraska and for the most part I love being an Eagles fan... and it's easy once you start naming players that these guys have never heard of, then they realize that you aren't a bandwagon guy, because no one would know who some of the old timers are... that's how I handle it... and then wear my eagles green... I'd put fans into four categories. Category One would be those who grew up in the area/region of a particular team or went to the team's school (for college purposes). Category Two are those who lived in a household with parents who were huge fans of a particular team, those who have changed areas/regions and now root for the team in their new area/region, and those who have a personal relationship with someone on the team. Category Three are those who picked a team to root for because of some other reason (although I would cede that their may be other significant connections that I'm not thinking of off the top of my head that could get you into Category Two), but have still stood by that team from the moment they've picked them and there has been some minimum time period that has passed (let's say 10 years). Category Four are all the rest, like those that change teams every few years.
Category One fans are the most legitimate fans. It's like family - you're born into your family, you can't pick your parents or brothers and sisters. You don't pick where you grow up. You do pick where you go to school, but that's still the most legitimate connection to a college team that you can have. I can certainly understand the connection for Category two fans, and their support for a team is legitimate, but it's just not quite as legitimate as the "blood ties" of Category One fans. Category Three fans aren't really legitimate, but they are still good fans. Category Four fans aren't legitimate and aren't usually aren't really good fans.

I am sorry Phillyfan,
but what gives YOU the right to determine that "fan type three" is NOT a real, legitimate fan, fan ?! You could indeed form categories based on why they are fan, but it is not too hard to point out flaws/bad fans in the two categories you call "legit." What, IMHO would should only determine who is a good fan or not is if/once they have chosen a team have stuck with it, with the only allowable lapse IMHO being if your hometown suddenly gets its own team.
By the way, I would fall in category three.... however since I found out that the games are being radio broadcast over the net I have missed only 10% of the games, and listened to roughly 75% (if not more) of the prime time games (SaNF, SuNF and MNF), despite kick-off being at 03:00 and the games not being over before 06:00; and the only ones I have missed I missed because I had important appointments/obligations (like college) the next morning.
I am assuming a category 5 would be 'varayder" or "Truck Rathman".

Only dipshteins who have no perspective outside of "Well I'm from here and I've lived here most of my life so no one else could possibly care this much about the team" would ever question my connection to Philly teams. So crammit, dipshteins.
was your father from around here? why would he cram Penn State and Philadelphia in your head?

well, if i cared enough to read this whole thread, i might have seen that.
but anyway, you are approved, congrats. :yay
Wow, I've been approved of twice on this board this week. I can hardly contain my joy.
But now I have to tell him he's not a legitimate fan because IGY and PhillyFan said so
never said that...but its not even close to the same thing if you arent from here...you root only for the eagles...i root for philadelphia...i guess its hard to explain since youre not from here...it just way different...but i never said you werent a real fan
tell your two year old i still love him/her
To be honest no one is in any positition to tell someone else how strongly they feel for said or particular team. I grew up in Philly and I'm a Phanatic for Philly sports, but I've tailgated with some "non home grown" fans that are just as commited to getting their asses kicked in opposing stadiums around the league as I am. Whatever someone's reason are, if you've stuck with the team through the Rich Kotite era, good on you and your welcome to swill frosty ones and scream at the TV while watching the Eagles any given Sunday.
E fargiing A farging G farging L farging E farging S farging EAGLES!!

This is pretty much the filter point here, I think...
Dad drove FS61 and I over 60 miles each way to watch teams coached by Joe Kuharich, Jerry Williams, and Ed Khayat. If enduring that doesn't make us true Eagles fans, I don't know what does! ;)
I'm not from Philly, IGY, but I am from the "area," depending on how strictly you want to define it. Born in Ephrata and raised in Chester County.
I am a Phillies, Eagles, Flyers fan. As much as I like basketball (much less since Dr. J retired), I root for the Sixers as well.
My boy, unfortunately, was not born in the area, but in the retirement center known as Naples, Florida. I'm fighting the New England pollution that his mother's heritage will try to seep in, though it's tough. And if he ends up rooting for the Cowboys, taterskins or Giants, I'll have to kill him.
Good to hear that you still love him, though. :-*

To PhillyFan and IceGrillinYou:
......and no, I wasn't born in Philly. I'm just as much a fan as any fan who roots for the Eagles. Take your catagories and stick 'em straight up your stinkin' ass sideways. Farg you, both of you.
I love Philly fans. We can't even get along with each other.
What really gets me is that I've been accused of not being as much of a fan as someone who made a bet that the stinking taterskins would beat the Eagles at least once this year.
Stinkin' ass taterskin lover.

Being in Rochester NY, I get it all the time. All I need to do is sport my coat with the kelly green sleeves and tell them Reggie White will always be an Eagle.
What part do you live in?
I've always loved the city of Philedelphia. It has more history of this country than any city in the United States. The city's architecture is simply awsome, and I fell in love with it's historic buildings from the first time I visited there in the early 70's on a school trip. I come from a long line of builders starting with my great great grandfather and can really appreciate the city's great historic buildings. I've been to Philly plenty of times for things other than to watch a football game. Philadelphia is a heck of a lot more than the Eagles, Sixers and Flyers.
It's were master builder Robert Smith constructed some of the countries earliest and most beautiful architecture. Matter of fact, it's the city were the title architect was first used. It's home of so many historic buildings that it would take a whole page to list them all. One of my favorites is the beautiful Independence Hall, were the Declaration of Indepence and the Constitution of the United States were written. The Christ Church Steeple, designed by Smith, has been a big part of Philly's skyline for over 200 years. link (http://www.ushistory.org/tour/tour_christc.htm) The building itself is simply beautiful, I could stand and look at it for hours. It's an architectual marvel. Ben Franklin and George Washington went to church there. How much more American can you get than that?
My absolute favorite building though, in Philly , or anywere else, is the City Hall building

They just don't do building like they did in Philly in it's beginning anymore. I might not be a native, but I love the place, and I'm just as much an Eagle fan as anyone, so please, don't tell me I'm less of a fan because I don't hail from the city itself.
