Reid says Owens 'a pleasure to coach'

ROB MAADDI
Associated Press

Terrell Owens gave Andy Reid an earful on the sideline, trying to persuade the coach to call his number one more time.

There was no argument, no heated dispute, no name-calling or calling out. It was just T.O. wanting to rub it in against his former team.

Reid simply ignored Owens and kept watching the backups finish out the Philadelphia Eagles' 42-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Owens may have been a slight nuisance on the sideline because he didn't want to come out of the game, but he was far more trouble for the defense on the field. The All-Pro wideout had five catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns - all in the first 19 minutes - in his first game against the team that drafted him.

Playing against the 49ers had to motivate Owens, especially after linebacker Derek Smith made some critical comments earlier in the week. Reid gave Owens extra incentive, sending him out for the coin toss as one of the team captains.

"You may think I'm crazy for saying this, but he is a pleasure to coach," Reid said Monday. "He enjoys playing the game. No matter what phase we were in during this thing, he enjoys it. He loves it and I appreciate that."

Owens certainly caused plenty of problems off the field the past several months. After helping lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl last season, Owens demanded a new contract, even though he signed a seven-year, $48.97 million deal when he came to Philadelphia in March 2004.

He feuded with quarterback Donovan McNabb, argued with offensive coordinator Brad Childress, dissed some teammates and was kicked out of training camp for a week after a verbal confrontation with Reid.

But Owens has been on his best behavior since he returned to the team in mid-August. He's reconciled with McNabb, stopped pouting and put aside his contract issues for now. More important, his performance has been more disruptive for opponents than his attitude in the locker room.

In the first two games, Owens has 12 catches for 255 yards and two TDs. Overall, the Eagles are 14-3 in the 17 games Owens has played, including the 24-21 loss to New England in the Super Bowl.

Owens has 98 catches for 1,577 yards and 16 TDs in those 17 games, and the Eagles have won 10 of them by double-digit margins, including six by 21 points or more.

"That's something special, to have the type of quarterback that Donovan is and to have the type or receiver that Terrell is," safety Brian Dawkins said. "For those guys to keep hooking up game after game, and to go into every game knowing that is potentially a touchdown waiting to happen at any given point, as a defensive player you love that. I'm definitely excited for those guys and the way they've been able to click."

Known for his flamboyant celebrations, Owens was downright boring against the 49ers. He low-fived McNabb after the first score, and stared into the crowd and nodded his head following the second one, before giving the ball to McNabb.

Owens took a crushing hit from safety Mike Rumph in the first quarter, but got right up and didn't let any taunting during the game affect him.

"Personally I like his game, he is a good receiver," 49ers safety Tony Parrish said. "He plays hard, he comes to work and he produces. What else can you ask of him as a football player? Now as a person, I don't know him, so I can't speak on it."

I think he's still racking up yards from the 9ers game.

I'd bet if you look in the Eagles record book you would be hard pressed to find any other receiver with those kinds of numbers. In two games he's averaging 127.5 yds. per, which in 16 games would be 2040 yards. :o

What's close?  in 1969 he had 65 catches for 1116.  (his highest year)

The NFL high water mark was established in 1995 with 1848 by Rice and 1781 by Issac Bruce.

Owens best year for yards was in 00 w/1451  (97 catches and 14 games, 15YD AVG).

While I think his 21yds per avg must come down, if it doesnt and he maintians a 6 catch average he will bust 2,000.

To just match Rices record in 16 games he will need 115+ per game.  If he is indeed playing for next year and they call his number enough this could be a lot of fun.

Thanks MURP. I didn't get it the first time because I'm what nice people would call slow. People like me would call me retarded.

Speaking of which, I was accidentally watching an episode The Surreal Life where the cast went bowling with a bunch of 'tards. This washed up supermodel was kibitzing the retarded bowlers by calling them retards. I was offended. You're not supposed to call people that are actually retarded retarded.

I recall back in his SF days, one of Owens' goals was to break 2000 yards in a season.

I'd say thats close to TO's 1200 from last year, TO did it in 14 games, which I think is all they played in the 60's.

So sayeth the die hard fan of Randy Moss.
When did Moss EVER cry about contract? much less one year after he signed one

When did TO ever leave a game WHILE the game was still being played and the outcome was still in doubt?  Or, for that matter, ever said to the media, "I play when I want to play" ?

When has TO ever taken plays off? Or leaves the field when he is needed for a certain play - like, say, a fake field goal attempt during a playoff game?

When has TO taken tokes of a federally controlled substance?

When did TO assault public servants?

When did TO moon fans/take a simulated dump on a goal post in an opponent's stadium(take your pick on what happened that day)?

When has TO verbally abused, squirted water bottles at, or physically berated Side/Field Judges to the point where the NFL had to impose fines totalling over $100K?  Not enough, then how about berating the NFL's corporate sponsors over a seat he wanted to sit in after the Eagles beat him down with sticks and stones?

And, when has TO ever been involved in a shoving match with his girlfriend?

Funny, though, media types were praising Randy Moss for being this "class act" and TO for being a "whiny crybaby."  This whole "Moss vs TO" episode had too many similarities to the "Iverson vs Kobe" thing in the NBA.  And when the whole thing was said and done, everything that people ascribed to Iverson - Ball Hogger, Team Cancer, Thug and Criminal, "All About Me!" - was true...

...about Kobe Bryant.

Now it seems, that the louder the media types proclaim TO to be "whiny," "classless," "immature," etc., more it seems that Randy Moss is the one who actually fits the bill.

None of this addresses his inconsistent effort and relatively short attention span unless the ball is coming his way on a fly/fade pattern.

TO a cancer?  Randy Moss would like a puff of whatever you're smoking.
