Ok, I'm 99% sure I want to get the DirecTV for the NFL Sunday Ticket...
Do any of you guys in the Philly are have this?
My main concern is whether I can get Comcast SportsNet still. Can I? If not, can I still use my old cable package to keep it and then like switch off my DirecTV and then watch the CSN?
I've got to have CSN.
I can get all the local channels like CBS-3, FOX, ABC, NBC and stuff. But I need CSN.
I am considering switching the whole gamut... I currently pay $190/month for phone service (unlimited local/long distance), digital cable (2 boxes, DVR, HBO, Showtime, HD suite), and high-speed internet.
I think it would be a few bucks cheaper with phone/DirecTV/DSL bundled... but the thing that's stopping me is having to buy a HD convertor. My TV is HD-capable, but it's not built in.
So, I'll probably stick with the cable and go to bars to watch the Eagles. Yawn.
I just want the Sunday Ticket. But if I have to get one of their packages to do it (don't know if I can have NFL ticket by itself) I will. It is $41.99 for like 135 channels. Then it is $59 a month for the Sunday Ticket. I'll pay $100 a month to watch every NFL game.
CSN is not on satelite. although that could change in the future (within a year). as they close the loophole keeping CSN on cable only.
but you can switch between cable and satelite. it's pretty simple if you have to a/v inputs into your television.
i do it now. i have directv going into the A/V input, and basic cable on coax. so i basically just change the channel on the TV to get the cable stations. (i didnt get sunday ticket this year)
Ok...sounds good.
I don't have the AV things on my TV, but I do have a multiplexer thing where I have my PS2, DVD player and other things plugged into. Then I just put my TV on channel 3 and push whichever button on the multiplexer thing and that option is on the TV.
So I could plug in DTV to the mulitplexer and when I wat to watch it I can just turn it on. And then if I want to watch local TV I just go back to the regular TV.
Nice.
yep, exactly.
oh...and i think you can get sunday ticket and nothing else. you just have to ask.
but it may cost you more. because they may not wave the installation of the dish and cost of equipment. they usually do give free installation and free equipment as long as you keep the basic package for 1 year.
Cool.
I'm going to Best Buy now. I tried over the phone but they kept transferring me around and around. Plus I like to see and talk to the people in person.
The thing I never got about Sunday Ticket is, unless you are an out of towner that wants to watch the Eagles, what exactly do you get from this that is worth the money? The Eagles are going to be on at 1:00 or 4:15 like 13 out of the 16 games this season, and when the Eagles are on you keep that game on and don't go flipping around, right? Then when the Eagles are over what are you gonna do? Flip around between 6 different games? Maybe it's just me, but I can't be constantly flipping all the time. You'll never know what the hell is going on. I just like to stick with one game. Even if there is one other game you want to watch that isn't shown locally, like the Pats vs Panthers next week, is it worth it to pay the money for it to watch one extra game per week that isn't shown locally? To me it isn't, but if it is for you, then go for it.
You can get DirecTV and the ticket only, Phreak.
There programming is the same as cable, but way less expensive.
DirecTV and the Ticket is the greatest thing ever.
I agree Avenger.

Blasphemy!
I'm locked into the Eagles games, but to have the option of all of the other games opposite the Birds? It's so sweet!!
how many games are opposite the birds?
If you had the option to divide your screen into 4s to watch 4 games at once that might be ok or even if you have picture in picture. Honestly though, how the hell can you flip between 6 different games when the Eagles aren't playing? I have enough trouble flipping between 2, let lone 5 or 6.
The only thing I get on the dish is Sunday Ticket and NFL Network (which comes with it). And I have it primarily to watch the Eagles since I don't get them in the NY Area...but I like the option to watch every other game, too.

I don't see Comcast letting CSN go without some kind of huge financial incentive. It's one of the competitive advantages they have over DirecTV, especially in the Philly market.
I miss PRIZM.

I meant when they play at 4, the 1:00 games are great to check out, and vice versa. Or when they play on Monday night or Sunday night.
I love it.
5/17 weeks Eagles play at 1. So for a good portion of the weeks, you get free range at 1 to watch a majority of the games. Worth it for the NFL addict (I'm pretty sure Phreak is one).

it's not that much of a financial thing in regards to rights to have the station. it's a loophole in a federal communications law aimed at keeping monopoly's at bay. comcast is using it to hold local sports fans hostage. (although in allentown, you can chose between 2 cable companies, Comcast and RCN, both carry CSN)
the law says any channel broadcast or over air through federal comm satelites must be available to any service provider. (dish network, directv, comcast, rcn, ect...)...comcast is using a loophole in that they are not broacasting any of their comcast sportsnet stations over satelite airwaves. therefore they dont have to let satellite providers access it, it is the only station in america that is broadcasted using landlines only.
funny, the one company that is going to probably challenge this and get the feds to close this loophole is verizon, who is now in a marketing deal with directv.
comcast knows that people want their sports, and are handcuffing people with rising cable costs, knowing that they wont leave because of the local sports in some cities (chicago, philly, baltimore, and any other cities with comcast sportsnets) is inaccessible.
comcast is well aware that for what they are selling you for $70-80 (digital cable) is only $41 on directv and dishnetwork, all the same stations, except 1, CSN. that is why directv pays so much for it's exclusive contract with the NFL. it needs the leverage.
So, did you get your system, Phreak?
I just signed up. I asked about just getting the NFL Ticket and they said that they no longer do that. They did it last year but not this year. So I took their offer of the Total Choice Premier packge (215 channels) + NFL Sunday Ticket.
I only pay for the Sunday Ticket for the first 4 months. When the NFL season is over, I only pay for the package. The premier package is $93 a month. But after the NFL season is over I do not have to keep that package. I can go back to the basic package, which I'll do and that is $41 a month.
What I don't understand is this:
Under that premier package they carry Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and Comcast SportsNet West. No CSN Philly. What the farg is up with that?
But I'm going to do what Wingspan said - I'm hooking it into my multiswitcher thing. So I can switch over to regular cable when I want to, play PS2, watch DVD or watch DirecTV.
And yes, I am an NFL nut. So I will watch every single game on TV. I'll flip between them. And when we're stuck with a zesty local game (like that PIT-TEn snoozer) I don't have to watch that one and that one only.
Plus I'll get to watch all CSN's, YES network, New England Sports Network and all of the FoxSports stations.
They're coming Saturday to hook it up. So on Sunday I will be ready to roll and watch every NFL game. I'm in heaven.
When they come to hook it up, do what they do in the commercials and high five the tech rep. Then dance around all over the place.

It's simple. Comcast knows that offering you out-of-town versions of CSN on satellite will not really hurt business, but letting you see the local CSN on there would cause a lot of people to switch from their cable service.
wait until you see the "Red Zone"
it's basically like NFL crack...you watch it, and when any team anywhere is close to scoring, it takes you right there.
brilliant!
Oooh....that sounds delicious. I can't wait until Sunday.
Good point, FF. The dude I spoke to said that they are in the process of getting CSN Philly. I hope he was right. Because once they do--goodbye Comcast.
The red zone is on NFL Network. You don't need Direct TV for that.
DTV is never getting CSN Philly. Comcast is stubborn, thinks of CSN Philly as their baby and will never let it go global.

see my post on the previous page.
they'll get it, just a question of when. then comcast will have no choice but to lower it's insane pricing policies.
I guess Direct TV has a diff red zone then.
Comcast is stubborn though. When I got Tivo and had trouble getting it working with my comcast box, I called and they told me that comcast boxes aren't compatible with them, which was a flat out lie. They HATE it when you choose a leading competitor over them. Also when I wanted help with my Tivo, they told me 50 times that I should cancel my Tivo subscription and get their Comcast DVR. You pay for the Tivo box itself and the subscription, genius. If I cancelled I'd still be out like $200. Also one rep on their customer service also told me that they don't help Tivo customers.
If Direct TVs packages ever get cheaper and get CSN then I'd leave Comcast in a split second. I farging hate Comcast and everything about them. Their high speed internet always gives me trouble and slow speeds, their tech reps that come out to the house are rude, ignorant and uneducated. The phone reps are clueless and follow a step by step guide to help you rather than adjusting on the fly. I've always hated Comcast.

We'll see. I have faith in stubborn comcast.
i have an easy solution.
i got directv over 2 years ago now, and was gonna say goodbye to comcast forever. so i called them to shut it off.
the came out and took my box.
the wire is left live.
i found out that they dont usually physically "shut off" cable anymore. and if they do, just rescrew the wire back in. so i've had directv for 2 some years, and have been getting free basic cable for the same amout of time. and i dont really care, farg comcast.
good for you. but comcast knows every sports fan will jump ship to dtv if they give up csn philly. so theyll never do it.
the other csns were formally other sports networks that were on dtv before comcast got them. so comcast just let them stay. csn philly was the first, the baby. doubt it will ever happen.
By the time Direct TV gets CSN Philly, every cable company around is going to offer every NFL game just like Sunday Ticket. That is what is inevitable. By 2010 Sunday Ticket or something like that is going to be standard. Football is just getting so big in this country and around the world.

someone above said it, those arent born comcast, they were fox sports net channels, already going through satellite.
Good move, Phreak. The Ticket and the the Superfan package is awesome. 8 games on one screen, and you can go to each one with the touch of a button. It's simply amazing.
I love the NFL Sunday Ticket.
Yes...I am counting the days down until Saturday when the guy shows up. I might do the happy dance like in the commercials.
And I will be in a football coma on Sunday. Beer, gambling, fantasy football, every goddamn game on TV....I'm in love.
Phreak did you get Tivo? Its the best thing i ever bought, I highly recommend it with the Total Plus package so you can record a shartload of movies you would normally never get to watch. I moved over to D TV in january from Dish Network and really love tivo. Like everyone on here has said soon enough Comcast Philly is going to lose its stranglehold of the CSN Philly network and there will be a mass exodus from Comcast. Just watch out for the installer trying to nickle and dime you. If you have questions about DTV check this site out www.dbsforums.com (http://www.dbsforums.com)
I'm in heaven. All hooked up and ready to go.
Of course they came at like 4:55pm (we'll be there between 10a & 5pm) so they waited until the last second.
But I've got my DTV and regular cable too so I still have CSN.
Tomorrow shall be awesome.

BTW--www.donwest.org (http://www.donwest.org) is the best website ever. He actually hosts a sports radio talk show now, yet can't seem to list the Braves pitchers correctly (clip is on the site, as well as the infamous video where he knocks over a giant stack of cards and proceeds to swim in them). Yet, that pretty much makes him a standard sports radio talk show host.

I used to watch that cards selling show of his while drunk and laugh. Hell even when I was sober I'd laugh.

Friday for "Friday Night Videos"
Saturday for "Saturday Night Live"
Of course, in our little hick town (Honey Brook- Phreak probably knows where that is.) there was no cable until the 1990s. I didn't have my MTV when it actually played videos. :'(

Musta capatalized on the gay porn earlier than most.
Zing.
Lesbians are just as much fun to watch when they're green and fading out.
There was a time and a place when I was desperate, young and immature like that. In fact, I think it was yesterday.
You know what the best was though? When the scene would get really bright and the picture would come in crystal clear for just a second. Sadly, lesbian porn movies with explosions are few and far between.
You are pretty luck that you have the internet now.
I don't remember any of those. But I do remember other times of explosions.........no, not in my pants. I lived with the guy who Alfred Molinas characters was based on in Boogie Nights. Well, theres that little Asian dude always blowing up the fireworks. They interrupted my scrambled porn watching.
Made the decision while watching the game at a bar today that I'm going to make the switch to satellite before next season. I'm just sick of having to leave my house to watch the Eagles.
Although, they fared a lot better than last week, when I watched at home.
