Title: Reggie!

I love this kid. But he shaved off his dreads! LOL

QuoteBrown will be hair to stay

Hard-working rookie receiver catching on with Birds
By DANA PENNETT O'NEIL

There was no deep meaning, no wish to have people take him more seriously, or heaven help us, no hope that this would reduce wind drag.

Three years after he first began to grow his hair, Eagles rookie receiver Reggie Brown simply woke up yesterday and decided he needed a change.

"I just cut it," Brown said, laughing about the shearing of his signature dreadlocks that left the usually easy-to-spot wide receiver happily incognito in the locker room last night.

And so ends the easiest of the unanswered questions following last night's head-scratching preseason loss to the Jets.

The other questions - like can you cut an entire second string? - well, they were a little more vexing.

"We just kept killing ourselves with penalties," Brown said of the stop-and-start offense. "You hate to see that. At least it's preseason, I guess."

Brown went home from the 37-14 debacle as one of the rare shimmers of excitement in an otherwise dreadfully dull and awful game. On the Eagles' first play from scrimmage, he corralled a 35-yard pass from Koy Detmer for a quick first down and a quick jolt of energy for the crowd.

"He's looking great and doing a great job for a young rookie coming in," Detmer said. "He is doing an awesome job coming and making plays right off the bat."

Brown followed that reception with a 7-yard catch on the next play and in a game where coaches were on the lookout for mistakes, Brown left the field feeling pretty sure he didn't make many.

"They don't like mistakes," Brown deadpanned.

Unlike a lot of his teammates, Brown wasn't playing for his job last night. When the final cuts are made tomorrow, Brown's name won't be among the casualties. The second-round draft pick is currently slotted as the third receiver behind Terrell Owens and Greg Lewis.

The Eagles, however, are expected to sign former taterskins receiver Darnerien McCants over the weekend. McCants, whose value dipped under run-happy Joe Gibbs, has never played in the West Coast offense, so it's not likely he'll come in and supplant Brown.

Still McCants has 4 NFL years on the rookie and in one fun-and-gun Steve Spurrier season had 27 catches for 360 yards and six touchdowns.

"I can't worry about that," Brown said of McCants. "It's not like I can tell them, 'Don't do that.' I always feel like you're playing for your job. If you're not performing, they're going to replace you. It's that simple."

The transition from the University of Georgia to the Eagles hasn't been necessarily an easy one. The easy-going Brown has had no trouble with the increased media scrutiny or the limelight. It's the homework that has been the problem.

In an article about the complexity of NFL playbooks in this week's Sports Illustrated, Brown said just recognizing what play the Eagles are calling, what with the 20-word description that might be used to call a simple square out, is challenging.

Most nights during training camp, Brown told SI, his weary eyes were still staring at the sleep-inducing, mind-numbing playbook well past midnight.

His nights have gotten shorter now that the team has turned its attention to specific game plans instead of the entire offensive scheme, but Brown said there's still plenty of work to be done.

"I feel pretty good," Brown said of his preseason. "I've made some strides and I think I've done pretty well for myself learning the offense. But I can't stop. You've always got to keep learning."

Does anyone know if there's a Cliff's Notes version of the playbook?  Maybe that'll help him out a little.

Team Reggie likes the kid's attitude and work ethic.  It was also nice seeing him catch balls against the Jets first team!!  Team Reggie would also like to thank the queen of ConcreteField for posting this article while I was sleeping.  :yay

It's funny... last night after he caught the 35 yarder, the camera had a shot of him where you could see the back of his jersey and helmet.  I didn't see the dreads and thought, "Maybe he tucked them in or something."  :-D

I thought maybe he leant the dreads to Atari ( :-D) Bigby...that man's hair could face-guard a WR all on its own.

Each time he picks someone they end up either getting cut or leaving.

I'm thinking the Pinkston part should stay until he ups and kills him once and for all.

I'm also thinking PinkstonMahe8734 would be ideal for Munson.

;D
