Title: World's Oldest Person Dies in Netherlands
Post by: Geowhizzer on August 30, 2005, 08:58:44 PM
A woman listed as the world's oldest person died Tuesday at age 115, according to the director of the home for the elderly where she lived.  (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050830/ap_on_re_eu/obit_oldest_person)

Granted, she lived in the Netherlands, but imagine the history this lady witnessed.

She was born in 1890- during the administration of Benjamin Harrison

She also lived through the presidencies of:

Grover Cleveland's second term
William McKinley
Theodore Roosevelt
William Howard Taft
Woodrow Wilson
Warren G. Harding
Calvin Coolidge
Herbert Hoover
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Harry Truman
Dwight Eisenhower
John Kennedy
Lyndon B. Johnson
Richard Nixon
Gerald Ford
Jimmy Carter
Ronald Reagan
George H. W. Bush
Bill Clinton
George W. Bush

That's 21 presidents!  :o

But even in her 115 years of existince, she still never watched as much gay porn as Yeti has in his 40+.

You think about the world she was born into and the one she left . . amazing.   Never in the span of just over 100 years did the world ever change (for the good and bad so much).       I can't imagine.

I've been doing a bit of research for my lessons on the late 1800-early 1900s.  As a part of this, I was finding pictures to put into my powerpoint presentations (no more overheads for this modern teacher!), and this one is appropriate to show just how long this lady lived, and how right 4and26 is.

Below is a picture of Philadelphia's Broad Street in 1900:

Mind you, this lady was already 10 years old at this point.

Lizzie Bolden of Tennessee is now the oldest person in the world. She's so old her parents were once slaves!

In a way, living so long must be somewhat tragic. You live with the knowledge that everyone alive at the time of your birth is now dead. Many of the people you were closest to left the earth decades ago -- in fact, the whole world with which you are familiar is a relic of the past. You likely outlive your children. Jeanne Calment used to talk about being "forgotten by God." In any case, we males have basically no chance at achieving that fate. The oldest person has been a woman for the last 20 years, and the guy who held the title before that was probably a fraud.

Also: I was amazed to learn that the two oldest women and the oldest man in the United States are all African-Americans living in the South. Now those are people who have truly borne witness to a lot of history.

And, unfortunately, a lot of tragedy.

i wonder how it feels when someone tells you, "hey, you're the oldest person in the world"...i mean, just having that distiction pretty much means you're not too far from dying.

must suck.

I think once you're past 90 or 95, everyone pretty much treats you like they are expecting you to die really soon. Half the things people say to you are more polite variations of "Wow, you're still alive!" By 115 you're used to it.

You must get a great feeling of satisfaction when you outlive those people by 20 years. "You know, the first person that talked down to me like that about my age is dead now."
