QuoteWPEN hopes to give WIP a run for money
By ANTHONY J. SANFILIPPO

After dominating the sports talk format on radio for the past 16 years, WIP is finally going to have some local competition. Greater Media Philadelphia, a subsidiary of Greater Media, Inc., announced Thursday they are switching their format on WPEN-950 AM from Oldies to an interview-based sports talk format.
"This is an exciting opportunity for WPEN," said station manager Bob DeBlois in a statement. "Philadelphia has more passion for sports than any other city in America.
"Although we made progress with Oldies, we feel a true sports talk station like Sports Talk 950 would be the perfect fit to satisfy the Philly sports fans incredible appetite for great sports."
The new format will begin Oct. 3.
Spearheading the new format will be a familiar name to Philadelphia sports talk.
Jody McDonald, former on-air host at WIP and WFAN in New York will assume the weekday afternoon drive time position from 3-7 p.m.
"I'm really excited about it," McDonald told the Daily Times. "It's about time Philadelphia fans have a choice. We're going to do it differently than WIP. We're going to be more interview driven."
While McDonald left the airways full- time in Philadelphia in 2000, he has maintained a voice in the area by hosting the Eagles pregame show on WYSP 94.1 every Sunday during the season, a gig he will have to give up this season.
"Having done the Eagles pregame show for four years has helped me keep a fan base and credentials here in Philadelphia," McDonald said.
McDonald said the he would be the go-to guy on setting up the interviews for the show.
"It will be a team effort but I'll be the guy driving the bus," he said. "I'll lean on the producers and the program director, but most of the guests will be my choice."
The station will also feature syndicated talk show host Jim Rome weekdays from Noon to 3 p.m. :boo I guess I'll just listen to Gargano during that time. :D
Rome is currently the No. 1 syndicated sports talk show in the country.
"Philadelphia is one of the truly great sports towns in America and a town that I've wanted to be in for years," said Rome in a statement. "I'm pumped and can't wait to get started. October 3rd is going to be a truly historic day in the jungle."
The station is expected to announce the rest of their lineup next week.
While the original format will be a mix of syndicated and local content, a Greater Media source said the long-term goal of the station is to have a 24-hour all-local format -- the same as WIP.
WPEN had been criticized in the past for having a weak night time signal, preventing many area listeners from being able to get a good feed of Phillies broadcasts when they were carried by the station.
However, the FCC has approved an expansion of the signal strength for WPEN from 5 kwh to 50 kwh slated to kick in right around the time of the launch of the new station.
The new signal will be more powerful than that currently generated by WIP.
It'll be the same shtein, just a different station.
The sad truth is that sports talk radio is full of idiot meatheads with different schticks to try to make themselves sound intelligent. They aren't.

No Eskin
No Cataldi
No Missanelli
It can only go up from there.
Just one more piece of evidence that I am the curse and it will all be lifted the second I drive out of town.
Whatever, I've only ever listened to WIP while driving through Philly on game days. I don't know shtein about the personalities there other than what I read here. But I do know that sportstalk in general is full of the most irritating people on the radio.
I can't believe Rome is the #1 syndicated sports talk show. Get in the HERD.
HERD is about the only sports talk show I listen to for more than a few minutes.

the Herd is the best show on air. Can it get any better than the "Daily Football Fix"? I submit that it can not.
I like Missanelli and Gargano, but everyone else is lousy on WIP, I like McDonald so I will give him a shot.
my main problem with WIP is that they are barely sports talk anymore. it's mostly entertainment and some sports.
WFAN is all sports, they breakdown games and stuff like that, which is what I like.
I can remember Jody Mac when he was on WIP in the afternoons (early 1990s). I like him- good, usually fair commentator.
For as long as I'm able I will never listen to talk radio. The only bright spot here is there's less crappy music being broadcast.
QuoteWPEN-AM (950) yesterday made official the hiring of former Philly talker Tony Bruno - one of the first hires at rival WIP-AM (610) and now based in L.A. - to host a 9 a.m.-to-noon sports-talk show when the station drops oldies Oct. 3. WPEN last week announced Jim Rome for the noon to 3 p.m. slot and Jody McDonald for 3 to 7 p.m. We hear that WPEN manager Bob DeBlois also is talking to Steve Martorano, and that funnyman Joe Conklin - now heard on sister station WMMR-FM (93.3) - is being asked to contribute.
from today's Inquirer
October 3rd is when I switch over.
I hope Bruno blows Cataldi and Gargano/Whiner Missinelli out of the water.
The only people on WIP I'll listen to is Reuben Frank, Paul Jolovitz and Jim Jackson.
it appears like they are just syndicating the show Bruno has in L.A., why else would it start at 9am

Cowherd is a douche and a Yankee/U2(yes even the new Shtein) fan. Kornheiser was much better, and still is. Rome's intelligence level for ripping people and calling out people makes him superior to other talkies. Yeah they all have some Schtick but it is entertainment. If you want facts read a stat sheet. In the Herd sux ass.
You are joking right?
:sly
ESPN Radio Boston is starting to broadcast next week from the building I work in. I'm going to harrass the shtein out of them. With feces.
I'll check it out, but I'm gonna stick with WIP. All talk radio is the same. The only reason a lot of people dislike WIP is because they hear it all the time and are sick of it. You'll get sick of the new station once you listen to it for a while.

Um, no...that's not the reason. But I'd hardly expect you to understand.
I loved the Kornheiser show, but he's not doing a national show anymore.
The Herd took his national spot, but is a completely different kind of show. Colin kicks ass cause he doesn't take himself seriously, which is the problem with most hosts.
Never understood the Rome hype. Guy's a geek who thinks he is just "it". His call in format is weak. I have to admit I do enjoy Colin Herd.
Is Bruno moving back? He just started at 1540 The Ticket in LA not to long ago.
I checked the WIP schedule, and on sunday at 4:00 - 7:00 pm it says NFL football Rams @ Niners. They used to only carry sunday night and monday night games. Now they are doing Fox games? Strange, because it's not even the game we are getting locally and they never got 4:00 games before.

So it'll be Bruno in the mornings with Rome from noon till 3 and Jody Mac from 3-7 (Competing with Eskin). My Mom works for Greater Media and sent me this Link (http://www.greatermediaphiladelphia.com/Employment/tabid/79/Default.aspx) for a job opening as a on air host. I begged her to let me put a resume in and to have an interview but she said I have no shot :'(. They want someone with at least 3 years of on air experience :(

Funny, they are sponsoring the statline on Comcast Sports Net right now.
Venture capital, what a great country.
I think its funny because CSN has always had a relationship with WIP hosts and such....now the new radio station is sponsoring their bottom line stats.
Friendly relationships don't pay them bills.

What really has me stoked is the fact that they don't list any broads in the line-up. Chicks know exactly dyck about sports.

Be pretty funny to do some Howard Stern on them. Call up and drop a "Jim Rome's nuts" on them.
Those Howard Stern calls are hilarious. Does he recruit people to do that or do they just decide to do it on their own?
I saw one video where there was a forest fire and they got a "call" from the Fire Dept Chief and the guy at the end was like "The Fire was believed to be started from Howard Stern's butthole" or something.

Stan Hochman's little bit pimping the station was classic....hearing him rip on WIP for talking about "bosoms and backsides"... :-D
Listening to Jody Mac this morning. Mostly he's just talking about the new station so far. Had a lot of local people on. Can't wait to hear AI's comments about the station. I love it. He'll probably do interviews for them all of the time. I also think McNabb might do something on here too...just to stick it to the idiots on WIP.

I didn't say you had to listen. Didn't even suggest it. I just said he'd be on there today. First time that I ever remember him being on tthat station. Might be the first time ever. And the fact that he's on with Eskin instead of Cataldi is funny.

meh...
1 thing drives sports radio in this city, and that is eagles football. nothing else.
Today they basically had sports personalities from the area on pimping the station and Jody Mac explaining what they will be doing on the station that's all. I think he's going to start taking calls tomorrow morning.
what's to explain?
it's a sports-talk station. there's your explanation.
i hope it's successful. hopefully they do better than espn radio. which shouldnt be hard. other than mike and mike in the mornings, that station is pretty unlistenable. philly sports live in the afternoon is terrible. and then they hit commercials evet 3 minutes while begging people to call them.
if anyone can do this, it's jody mac. he's a familiar voice, and liked well enough. are there any other local shows? or will it all be pumped in syndicated shows?

The syndicated shows are only supposed to be on for a while until they get established and then they will be all local (down the road, of course). Tony Bruno's show is pretty damn good...although I hate Jim Rome and I can't wait until he's booted.
When I say "explain", I mean that the station was an oldies station for a LONG time. Now its a sports talk radio so they spent the day making sure that everyone tuning in understood what was going on.
I think (as someone mentioned) that Steve Martorano will be hosting in the near future, if he hasn't been hired already. Hochman is also going to be a part of the station now too.

QuoteGreater Media's New Sports Talk 950 Teams Up With The Troy Aikman Show
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Greater Media, Inc. is announcing
Former NFL Quarterback Troy Aikman will be on the new Sports Talk 950
beginning the first week in October when the station changes to sports/talk.
The new interview-based, sports/talk oriented format will provide
listeners with a new choice to hear the very best sports variety, facts,
information and talk in Philadelphia. The Troy Aikman Show from Sporting News
Radio will air Friday nights throughout the current NFL season.
Aikman is a former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys of the National
Football League, and currently a television sportscaster for the Fox network.
Each week, Aikman will highlight the weekend's top NFL match-ups with game
analysis, strategy and interviews with the biggest names in football on the
air on the new Sports Talk 950.
Listeners will be able to tune in for Troy's perspective as one of the
NFL's all-time great quarterbacks, plus hear the latest news from front
offices and locker rooms around the league. When a big NFL story happens, the
biggest names will join Aikman. Guests last year included: Andy Reid,
Donovan McNabb, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre.
"I know firsthand how passionate Philadelphia is about their football.
It's great to be on a real sports station like Sports Talk 950 in one of the
greatest sports cities in America," said Aikman.
"Troy's knowledge and insight into the game is impeccable. Adding him to
the new Sports Talk 950 team is tremendous! His interview-based show will
provide Philly football fans an inside the huddle perspective with the very
best sports variety, facts and information," said Sports Talk 950 WPEN Station
Manager Bob DeBlois.
WPEN is owned and operated by Greater Media, Inc., the parent company of
19 AM and FM stations in the Boston, Detroit, New Jersey and Philadelphia
markets. It also owns a modern printing plant and a group of weekly
newspapers in central New Jersey as well as several telecommunications towers
located throughout the United States.
QuoteWPEN's sports-talk format ready to tackle WIP
By CHRISTOPHER A. VITO
vitoc@phillynews.com
For nearly two decades, sports-talk radio in Philadelphia has been dominated by one station. But Bob DeBlois thinks it's about time for a strong alternative.
DeBlois is the general manager of WPEN (950-AM), a station that will swap formats from oldies to sports talk on Monday. The format change is sure to create a level of competition between WPEN and Philadelphia's dominant sports-talk station, WIP (610-AM).
While plenty of details regarding WPEN's changeover remain unknown, DeBlois said Philadelphia-area sports fans are ready for the new WPEN, which will be known as Sports Talk 950.
"We're giving fans a choice, to see where they go for the most passionate voice in sports radio," DeBlois said.
DeBlois said the new WPEN will be a caller- and interview-friendly station. Instead of sports fans questioning why a call was made, DeBlois said WPEN will bring players and coaches on-air to answer some of those questions.
WPEN will be a mix of syndicated shows, and others that will be hosted by local talent. Former WIP personality Jody McDonald will host a show from 3 to 7 p.m., pitting McDonald against WIP's Howard Eskin in evening drive time.
McDonald said one major difference will set the two stations - and his show from Eskin's - apart.
"If a listener gives us a call and starts talking about a good topic, we're going to give the caller more time to talk," McDonald said. "Five to 6 minutes for good callers, and bad callers will get 30 seconds or less. We're not going to set restrictions like other stations do."
WIP general manager Marc Rayfield did not return phone calls from the Daily News for comment on WPEN's new format.
WIP was the city's first radio station in 1922, and has had a sports format since 1987. DeBlois said the city is big enough to handle two such stations.
"Boston has three sports-talk stations, and one of them [WEEI 850-AM] has the best ratings of all of Boston's radio stations," he said. "Philadelphia can do it."
WPEN will feature nationally syndicated radio shows hosted by personalities like well-known sports broadcaster Jim Rome, Philadelphia native Tony Bruno, and former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. The station also will air play-by-play of Saint Joseph's men's basketball games.
When asked if he thought WPEN could eventually pass WIP in the ratings, McDonald said: "We're starting from ground zero, but give us some time. We won't run stride-for-stride out of the gate, but we're going to do things differently."
If I had a radio, I would listen to it. WIP sucks, bring it down.
WIP will stay on top as long as they continue to carry all the major teams' games.
but competition can only benefit the listeners. if WIP is forced to try to keep their listeners they will have to do more, like Eagles Week (interesting timing ;)).
Boston finally got an ESPN Radio station and I practically cried tears of joy knowing that I finally wouldn't have to listen to these farging yokels on the radio any more.

Every time I hear about Jody, all I can remember is listening to him on Fridays: "Hey, Jody Mac, do me a favor!"
He was one of my favorites. He was knowledgeable, civilized and impartial. He didn't dwell on negatives, or positives, but gave a fair assessment of the sports teams.
Probably why Avenger doesn't like him. And probably why he didn't last on WIP.
I don't tune into sports talk radio to hear impartial opinions. Throughout the course of the week I hear 50 different opinions from 50 different people on all sports. What are a few more opinions going to bring to the table? I tune into sports talk radio for local sports updates, funny drunk prank callers, and controversy. Also I like to get a feel on what the majority of the fans feels on certain issues, compared to how I feel on them. I really don't care what the hosts say, because I don't value any of their opinions except for Ray Didinger's.
Some people get annoyed by what Howard and Angelo and other hosts say. I don't get wound up about things like that.
QuoteAlso I like to get a feel on what the majority of the fans feels on certain issues.
You're not getting that on WIP. You're getting bullshtein from 50-100 shut-ins who have nothing better to do than call talk radio stations to hear themselves talk.
But whatever, it's a free country. People watch professional wrestling and reality television so listening to WIP isn't all that pathetic.
Some people think all talk radio is zesty and just listen to their ipod ;)

They are people in the city with opinions. If you don't get that on WIP, then there is nowhere else to get it.
I believe that you get a truer cross-section of "fan opinion" with a host like Jody Mac than you do an Eskin or Cataldi.
With Cataldi, you get bluster, and his show fosters the same from most of their callers. Wasn't it Cataldi and his goon squad that made the trip to NYC to boo the McNabb pick? The average IQ of callers to Cataldi's show was about 40 when I last listened regularly (c. 1993).
With Eskin, you get what Eskin thinks... and the opinions of fans that agree with Eskin. Those that don't agree with Eskin are called morons, Howard explains why he is the smartest, and their opinion is summarily dismissed. He's been a smug, arrogant jerk since his days with KYW.
With a host like Jody Mac, you get listeners from both sides of issues. They don't have to fear any attempts at embarrassing them, and know that they will get a fair chance to state and discuss thier opinion.
Then again, you and I don't agree on what we consider "entertainment," either. As a non-drinker, I didn't bother joining a fraternity while at college (Then again, at Eastern University, a Christian college, there was only one :paranoid) and I don't overly enjoy boorish of juvenile behavior. Except on this board. :D
I'm a non-drinker as well, but it's funny to hear drunk idiots call up and make fools of themselves.
Howard and Angelo(who I don't even listen to) aren't the only 2 hosts on the station. Macnow, Jolovitz, Frank, Eckel all have callers who aren't either all pro or against them.
Roob and Eckel aren't regular hosts on there so please.
Roob fills in when someone else calls out or someone is on vacation...and its normally the overnight show. If Jolo and Frank were regulars instead of some of the crap on there now, the station might actually be worthwhile.
But they're not, so its not. So your point is destroyed.
Rube is on every tuesday, Paul is on every weekend, so yes they are regulars. Don't comment on what you don't have a clue about.
Secondly, them being regulars or not, has nothing to do with my point. Do you even read, or do you just read what you want to see?

Rube is on every tuesday, Paul is on every weekend, so yes they are regulars. Don't comment on what you don't have a clue about.
Secondly, them being regulars or not, has nothing to do with my point. Do you even read, or do you just read what you want to see?
Considering Roob is a personal friend of mine, I can tell you that no he is not on EVERY Tuesday.
Wow. That'll leave a mark.
i take Jodi's opinon with more validity because I don't feel that bases them on personal feelings for each team.
take Howard for examle, anything he says about teh Phillies is biased, same with the Eagles. Angelo only tries to get callers, so anything he says is bs.
Jodi's show has a nice pace to it, he takes time to listen to callers and gives his true opinion.
in the end, XM satellite radio is the way to go

Does anyone else here listen to the First Team on Fox on 950 every morning?
Bar none, the best sports/entertainment show on sports radio. I don't give a rats ass that Steve Czaban is a Skins fan, the show is great.

The worst station I have ever listened to (this group includes horrible J-Pop stations all in Japanese when I was in the military, mind you) is Sportstalk 980 down here in Washington. I can't find any other sports radio stations here in the D.C area, and this one is absolutely atrocious. It is the ESPN Radio station, but all the ESPN content you get is Mike and Mike in the Morning, which is okay, and Sportscenter updates. Then it's the Sports Reporters (with Czaben, who is a fargtard, and some other douchebags), then the most boring show in the history of boring shows, the Brian Mitchell Show. After that, it is the John Thompson Show. Which, surprise, also farging sucks. No Dan Patrick, no Herd, etc. It sucks donkey dick.

dan snyder stole their espn programming didnt he...i havent listened but i thought that they didnt have any espn programming anymore...
i tried to listen to Czaben on 950 and i flip to it once in a while. but he's pretty much a shtein stirrer like cataldi. he's also not as funny as he thinks he is.
he's also not as funny as he thinks he is
thats the key right there....hes thinks hes a stand up comedian or something...and he knows no sports but taterskins football...granted cataldi knows nothing about sports but at least the show is philly based...so you get stuff like a brian westbrook interview today...and philly talk in general
i dont need to listen to a unfunny blowhard like czaban who on top of not knowing sports will have zero philly stuff...and most of all is a pig taterskin fan

QuoteMissanelli returns, feud with Eskin begins
By Michael Klein
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Mike Missanelli is coming back to Philadelphia radio as afternoon host on sports-talk station WPEN (950).
"I feel good, excited, I'm pumped," Missanelli said. "I think we're poised to make a good run."
He will start April 1 with the rest of the lineup on "ESPN 950," but a war of words has begun.
Missanelli - taking aim at talk king Howard Eskin, who hosts the 3-to-7 p.m. shift on rival WIP (610) - today said: "His worst nightmare just came true."
Missanelli and Eskin were colleagues but not buddies at WIP until Missanelli was fired two years ago after an altercation with a producer.
Told of Missanelli's wisecrack, Eskin said: "I'm just happy that Mike finally has a job. I just hope he doesn't hit anybody at this place."
Missanelli said his own show "will be a lot more fun to listen to. His show is tired and everyone knows it."
Missanelli, who lives in the Philadelphia suburbs, said he would give up his New York-based, national ESPN show with former Inquirer columnist Stephen A. Smith, who is in contract negotiations with ESPN Radio. A spokesman for ESPN said that regardless of Smith's radio contract, he would continue on its TV and Web platforms.
ESPN 950 yesterday announced its morning show, ESPN's Mike and Mike (6 a.m. to 9 a.m.).
Today it announced that Jody McDonald, now afternoon host, would move to 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
ESPN's Mike Tirico will take the 1-to-3 p.m. block, followed by Missanelli from 3 to 7 p.m.
The Locker Room, with current midday cohost Harry Mayes and Dan Schwartzman, previously at ESPN 920, will be on from 7 to 11 p.m.
sweet. love Mike Miss

I havent seen any official ratings, but I know Jody Mac was doing fairly well, just not making a huge push...it was the rest of the retards they had on there that were terrible.
they probably figured that Jody could pump up middays with his momentum and Missanelli could pick up where he left off at 3pm
I heard about this a few weeks ago. I've never listened to 950 aside from Jody Mac on occasion, their morning show ratings were beyond pathetic. Foley was canned and they're gonna let the other guys contract run out.
They (Greater Media Phila.) were in talks this past season trying to get the Eagles to come over from WYSP.
missanelli is a wannabe eskin which is why they are putting him head to head with the king
both guys are haters and say things they dont really believe just to piss as many listeners off as possible which in turn raises ratings
this radio bullshtein is one part of being a "true" Eagles fan I don't want
I love Philly, don't get me wrong. but I only been there a half dozen times and I don't luv me sum trash radio Philly style, thank god
its not that bad...people who act like wip is a sign of the end of the world are just homers who dont like bad things said about their teams...of course there are times that it infuriates me but overall its excellent radio...if you like philly sports of course

Yeah, that morning show was horrendous. I was pissed when they pulled Steve Czaban's show off the air to put those collection of fargbags on there.

its nothing like baltimore or ny...baltimore is not even terrible its just unbelievably boring which makes sense since they only have two teams to talk about and one doesnt even exist at the moment...plus its just not a sports town...
ny is slightly more similar to philly but their callers are so bland and all sound the same...also they talk about non ny sports quite a bit in ny which is expected because ny is so transient but if i was a ny fan it would piss me off...i will say tho mike and the mad dog is the best sports show ive ever heard
M & MD is good...I used to love being able to catch them whenever I could and the airwaves were working in my favor. I also loved listening to WFAN at night when I was at work after the Phils were reeling in the bitchass Mets; pure gold on that station.
Houston sports radio isn't much. It's funny to listen to some sing the praises of Ed Wade though. I can't wait to call in and laugh at them. They have two down here (610 AM, ironically and an FM station) I mostly listen to the FM one because its ESPN and I like Cowherd's show.
there is nothing ironic about that and yeah, sure call me an irony nazi
it's a coincidence, not an irony

martarano is way better than macnow...not that i dislike him hes just boring
is he the full time replacement or just temporarily
i think fulltime, Ike Reese is supposed to be getting his own show after howard, i'm sure he'll have a co-host though
ike is decent but no way can he handle his own show even with a co host
For those who get their news from papers they find under train seats, this may not be new. I found this ironic until I read the part where Cataldi comes clean about his journalistic approach.
Angelo Cataldi on his Obama Interview & the Media Leeches (http://philly.metro.us/metro/blog/sportsblog/entry/Game_Views__Sheltered_by_the_world_of_sports/12076.html)
QuoteThirty years ago, I confided to my advisor at Columbia University that my career goal was to be a sports writer. He nearly died.
Columbia produces foreign correspondents, network anchors and best-selling authors. In the Ivy-covered fortresses of the world's best journalism school, sports is trivial, and becoming a sports writer is akin to contracting a terminal illness.
That day, my advisor made me promise that I would cover sports the way the best reporters covered the White House. He told me to help build a new journalistic path from the frivolousness of sports to the gravity of the real world. I agreed.
For all these years, I convinced myself that I had at least partly succeeded. Then last week happened. On March 20, 2008, I was reminded sports has been nothing more than a refuge from reality for me, a way to avoid an uncompromising world.
I interviewed Sen. Barack Obama on my 610 WIP radio show last week. That's right, I spent seven minutes and 45 seconds talking to a man who may soon be the leader of the free world. That the opportunity would fall to me and my co-hosts was inconceivable because we only occasionally deal with life outside of sports. That we would then all become embroiled in the national crisis of the day was downright surreal.
During a softball interview (sorry, Columbia), Obama referred to his white grandmother as a "typical white person" who would be intimidated if she walked past a black man on the street. The context was clear. He was by no means saying she was a racist; he was merely depicting the mindset of that generation. Obama was trying to show the way people once thought about race — even the woman who helped to raise the first truly serious African-American presidential candidate.
Within hours, we were besieged with questions from the media. At each stop on the media tour, I tried to explain the context of the remark, but the only reporters or pundits who believed me were those with no desire to punish Obama. It was the lead story that night on "The O'Reilly Report," "Hannity & Colmes" and countless other right-tilting broadcasts.
CNN provided the most revealing moment. My WIP co-host Al Morganti agreed to make an appearance via satellite, which included a telephone pre-interview. When asked how he felt about Obama's remark, Morganti said he didn't think it was a big deal at all. The woman on the other end of the phone said that opinion would not fit well into the broadcast. He was never called back.
So what did I learn from this surprise visit to the world I left three decades ago? I learned I'm probably not much better than these media leeches seeking the daily blood of controversy. In many ways, I do the same thing. I come up with a strong opinion, and then I look for facts that will support the bias — discounting contradictory evidence.
The difference is, I'm commenting about sports. My opinion may be uncomfortable for a coach, player or owner, but no one is going to raise taxes or go to war because of it. I've never been more relieved at my career decision 30 years ago than I am right now.
It's pretty clear I never fulfilled that promise to my advisor. I have bridged no new paths. Sports has become nothing more than my shelter from a real world that is too real.
The story had one final twist a day after the interview, when we learned that Obama had booked his appearance on our show because he wanted to make his picks in the NCAA Tournament.
There I was, obsessing over a visit to his ruthless world, and all the senator really wanted was a few minutes of refuge in mine.
Indeed - instead of Cataldi raising the bar for Sports Journalism, we see how far "real" journalism has fallen.
cataldi isnt a journalist and hasnt been for almost 20 years

Steve Fredericks was Mike Missinelli's first guest on 950 ESPN...I hadn't heard him in a long time. Fredericks was an all time great as far as I was concerned. Bill Campbell status.
how old are you?
I fail to see how that is in any way relevant to my comment.
You have to have been around for awhile to remember Fredericks. You have to be OLD to remember Campbell.
Fredericks retired in 2004.
And Campbell did eagles pregame part time in the 80's. Did a short show on WIP in the early 90's, and still does some spots on KYW.
Anyone who has been a sports fan in philadelphia at all since the 50's knows who Bill Campbell is.
So yes, I am at least 4 years old.

WIP is converting to an all ex-player station. Therian, Ike, Hugh, G Cobb, Mitch Williams.
I would tune in every day if they gave Hugh and Hollis Thomas (once he retires) their own show. I don't know how much actual sports talk would take place, but it'd probably be pretty damn funny.
i thought the same thing with hugh but hes painfully unfunny....apparently being a good interview doesnt make you a good radio guy
Athletes aren't funny.
I disagree. Getting shot in the crank, shot in the gut, impaling yourself on a fence while fleeing from a dog, getting caught going through airport security with "The Whizzinator", going on the party boat and making it rain in scrip clubs all make me laugh.
Ron Mexico, anyone?

Yeah, Hugh is bad.
I have been a big fan of Ike Reese forever, but yet to hear him do a show. Is he any good?

no
sports radio is just about as intolerable as right wing radio. i suggest you all kill yourselves.
Any kind of talk radio is bad, don't try to limit the hate to one flavor.

hes pretty good...he knows a lot about all sports (cept hockey) unlike hugh who knows nothing about any sports including football...but ike is better suited as a second wheel to a gargano type
