finally get a look at the young guys in a game. :yay
Info from the Eagles site:
- says the first team O and D will play the first quarter. 2nd team will play 1 1/2 quarters and then the 3rd team will finish up the game.
- G Lewis and Reggie Brown starting. Billy McMullen and Justin Jenkins are the 2nd group.
- Todd Herremans will start at LT.
- Westbrook is still a little sick, if he cant give it a go, Reno Mahe will start. Who would have ever thunk it....
QuoteInjuries
The only new addition to the team's injury list is cornerback Matt Ware, who was suffering from a toe infection and needed it lacerated. He won't make the trip to Pittsburgh.
Other players who won't make the trip to Pittsburgh due to previously reported injuries include safety Sean Considine, running back Correll Buckhalter, end Jamaal Green, offensive lineman Jamaal Jackson, and defensive tackle Sam Rayburn.
hard to believe the first team o will play a full quarter...perhaps because the wr's are so raw they want them to get extra work in with mcnabb...still i dont see mcnabb playing more than two series

just as a reference: in last years first preseason game McNabb played the first quarter and the first series of the 2nd quarter.
McNabb for a quarter scares me, simply because with TO up in the air we can't afford to lose anyone. Andy knows what he is doing though, so I'll trust in him.

He might not if Herreman struggles.
Two series might wind up being 6 plays.

That'll worry me too... but only because we'll have a 4th round rookie watching his blindside. :-\
I hope Herremans is as good as advertised and we haven't been fed out of the "Spadaro Hype Machine". ;D

I'm looking forward to tonight. I'll get to see my boy Calvin for the first time!
I'm also looking forward to tonight. Not only just to see some football, but to watch a bunch of the young guys who could play a big part on this team this year.
1. I still hold out hope that Chad Lewis would be brought back soon. But I liked what I saw from Steven Spach in TC. So I'll be watching him along with Andy Thorn and James Whalen to see how they perform. It'll be tough since the backup QBs suck so badly, but I hope to see something that says if Chad isn't healthy, they'll be able to contribute. It is a MUST to have a good #2 TE on this team.
2. The young OL's. How will Herremans deal with the first team? How will Darilek look at backup C? Who will establish themselves in the race to make the roster?
3. Reggie Brown, Billy McMullen, Robert Redd, Isaac West and Justin Jenkins - how will they do? I'm sold on Greg Lewis and I'm sold on Reggie (I just want to see him in live game action) - but we need to see something from Wilbur.
4. Ryan Moats...how will be catch the ball? How well will he block? I know he can run, but I want to see the other parts of his game.
5. Mike Patterson - how well will he deal with the physical Steelers OL?
6. The LBs - I'm excited by this group of LBs and i especially want to see Martin patterson and Matt McCoy get snaps.
I'm excited.

AR: Say T.O. again. Say...T.O....AGAIN. I dare you, I DOUBLE dare you, motherfarger, say T.O. ONE MORE GODDAMN TIME!
Reggie Brown is awesome. ;D
QuoteWith Todd Pinkston out for the season with a torn Achilles' tendon and Owens unofficially suspended, Brown figures to get plenty of time to accelerate the learning curve, providing his sore groin holds up.
"Don't worry, I'm playing," Brown said. "I just want to go out there and have a solid start. Five or six catches for 100 yards -- that's solid. I just want to play football and have fun and get a feel for the speed of the game."
Reggie puts some big expectations on himself. Love it.
That Channel 6 dude must be 5 foot tall. Patterson's only 5'11".
wonder what percentage of the commentary is going to be about the game and what percentage will be about TO.
Im gonna say 60% TO and 40% game. boooooooooooo

Is this game televised outside the Philly area? (Not counting cable or NFL channel. I'm still at the in-laws, and they get NO sports channels :boo)

Yeah I am going out with one of my buddies for wings and beer to watch it. The place we are going has $.15 wings so we would have went anyway but it is a bonus that PHI/PIT is on. I am sure there will be a ton of Squeelers fans there so I don't know that I will be able to keep my wings down. On a positive note I will be able to break out my Lito jersey tonight.

Hello Sean Landeta.

Wow, this team blows. McNabb is terrible.
Birds stink, Phillies losing, no surf, shtein! :fire
I sure love the way Andy Reid is not tipping his hand in the preseason, but he should let the D get some work in.
JJ wants them all rested for the regular season so they can take some heads off.
They started slow a couple times last year. The three and outs aren't a big deal. The INT was an accident, just a busted route, and the return was due to the shtein punt and some uncalled holding penalties. They have to build some confidence, and we'll start rolling.
I wish they'd get rid of that stupid WR screen.
Ummm... guys (and gals), it's the first preseason game.
I know we all want to prove that we're a Super Bowl team even without TO, but nothing, good or bad, can really be gleaned from the first game of the preseason.

Thank god for the last few minutes of the 1st quarter....I almost had my season tickets posted on Ebay...
Reggie Brown is looking great so far. I'm impressed. That sack on McNabb was actually more Westy's poor block than Herremans. Billy Mc is also starting to impress. I've got a good feeling. Just looks like a little rust, and some rookie jitters. With the first quarter of the first preseason game in the bag, I'm more than content. I can't wait to see Moats play some. Too bad he can't get in with the first team.

Just when you think the 3 boneheads can go one game without making a name mistake...

Bad STs play
Bad first play by Greg Lewis
Bad blocking by 2nd team OL
Other than that, I like what I'm seeing so far. The WRs are looking good. Everyone is flipping out over the PS games, it makes me laugh.
I am totally loving how Reggie Brown and McMullen played in this game. McNabb (other than that first play which was just weird) looked solid.
I am worried about our run game. We need a big back in there against defenses like Pittsburgh.
Last season, our special teams blew major chunks the first few preseason games, and after some Harbaugh tweaks, it was again one of the best in the NFL.
You have to admit that Detmer is looking awesome.
Is this "Monster" dope for real?

I think he's going to be a much better #2 than Koy once he learns the offense and gets comfortable. He looks real good so far, and Moats sure does look dangerous in open ground. Also looks much like he has a more rugged build than Westy.
Unless Detmer retires McMahon will not be #2. If McNabb goes down he might vault to #1, but he won't be #2 while Akers is on the team or while Koy's on the team. The #3 can't be a holder.

Yep, he looked like garbage every day I was up there. But he showed some very nice things tonight. I think you could be right - he's one of those gametime guys.
Hall sucks so far. He hasn't made a decent throw yet. :-\

Edit: Chris Samp... that was a surprise.
Chris Samp! (cue "The Natural" music)
Samp & Perry, kicking ass.
That was a hell of a catch considering the throw.
Chris Samp has some nice hands. He caught everything thrown to him at TC and has nice size to him. A possession guy.
I guess Hall forgot to take into account the delay of game penalty when he made that throw.
Perry weren't shy about putting his shoulder down, either. I'd say he's healed up just fine.

Or maybe he was just stoked that he's made it this far into the season? :paranoid
Positives(not including players who we know are capable):
Reggie Brown
Ryan Moats
Mike McMahon
Carlos Perez
They stood out to me, I didn't really pay attention to the lineman.
Negatives:
Wynn - thought he could have done a little better with returns.
Special teams play on coverage
Dirk Johnson - still may be hurting

I just checked the play by play. I guess I was seeing things. I saw Johnson on the back of the jersey. What the hell.
Well Mariscal sucks then.
Johnson didn't play. Mariscal (sp?) didn't have a very good kick that first punt. Actually, the first one was ok, the rekick wasn't that great though.
And McMullen (and all the wrs) was impressive. I kept waiting for him to drop a pass that hit him right in the hands.
And that catch LJ made on the TD was a nice grab considering the zip on that ball.

I didn't think Mariscal was THAT bad. Johnson started off in the preseason last year shaky on his first few kicks as well. He's just holding Dirk's spot until he comes back.
Way to go Patterson and Reggie. That's a hell of a first game! I'm very pleased!
I missed the first quarter and a half but I liked a lot of what I saw from the back ups and guys just fighting for a roster spot.....be it with the Eagles or another team. McMullen made a few nice catches before getting yanked. I was very impressed with Mike McMahon. He made some very nice throws and showed some good mobility and ability to improvise, especially on that nice run. Moats looked not only to be quick and elusive, but not afraid to lower his shoulders and put on a little power display too.
I was kind of surprised to see so much offense in the first preseason game from the Eagles. I'm not used to saying this as of the last few years but turnovers and special teams are what cost them the game. It's irrelevant because it's preseason but it's still something that needs and will be addressed.
My buddy and I were the only ones out of 50 or so regulars to watch the game at the Pub tonight.
:boom
Of course, at least 50 Steelers queers showed up with their towels and beads and gay little toy school buses and enjoyed giving us shtein for the first quarter. I hate shteinsburgh and everything about the Steelers, especially the toothless, ass-end-of-the-state fat chicks who gorge themselves on peanuts and sweet iced tea and then fail to leave the waitresses a tip.
He wasn't necessarily bad, but last year Johnson had a good kick to balance out every bad one. I don't think Mariscal had a single kick tonight that made me take notice. He had adequate distance, but nothing to get excited about. But, as you said, PG, he's preseason a filler so not really a big deal either way.
- I thought Reggie Brown looked like a 5 year veteran. Just amazing how this guy can learn the offense so quickly and run such precise routes.
- Moats, damn, this guy could be special. Tonight we got a taste of that power/quickness/moves combination he has. His height might help him rather than hurt him.
- McMullen- Didnt look great, but he caught em. good enough for now. Thank god.
- Bruce Perry - dayum! someone had some pent up aggression that needed to be released! Just wish this guy could stay healthy. maybe we can send him some Karma and get rid of his curse. ;)
- McCoy and Cole looked average. Some decent plays and some where they looked lost.
- Mike McMahon stepped it up which was nice to see, although Joey Harrington was 9/9 the other day. :-D :paranoid
- DMAC looked pretty sharp out there. No chance for a weak opening up of the season. Lets keep that completion % closer to 65 than 60 again this year. :yay
- Special teams, terrible, but who cares. Harbaugh will have the guys ready to go. Each year the Eagles lose some special teams studs, they flop around in the preseason, and then guys step up in the regular season.
- Jason Short- bam, nice hit. Luv this dood.

Most impressive catch was the one on the sidelines where he kept both feet in bounds. Really impressive for a rookie in his first game. :yay
My observations (pasted from the EMB):
1. The special teams are going to be roasted, but I remind you that Harbaugh hasn't really had a chance to shape his units yet. He's got to work with guys who are not going to be in the NFL in 3 weeks. Once he has time to set his squads after the 53 man rosters are set, then evaluate the overall performance of the ST's.
2. The punt return TD shouldn't have happened. They called off-setting penalties on the teams. Rod Hood was blasted in the back and they called Dexter Wynn for going out of bounds on his own. Wynn was pushed out, so it was a bad call.
3. But since they did not get the call right on Wynn, Mariscal showed his inconsistency and punted a terrible low line drive and the coverage teams had no shot. Colclough took it on the run and was gone before they could set up.
4. The kickoff return was a combination of poor coverage and a poor kick by Akers. He lined the kickoff and by the time the coverage units got down there the returner was out to the 30 and only needed one or two blocks.
5. I also see some geniuses are blaming Donovan for the INT on the first play of the game...wrong. That was Greg Lewis' fault. He either ran the wrong route or he didn't turn around at the right time. It was a strict timing route and Lewis wasn't out of his break quick enough like he was supposed to be.
6. Despite the INT, Donovan still had a very nice showing. He was 14/19 for 132 yards. That is a 73.6% completion rate.
7. Billy McMullen, Greg Lewis and Reggie Brown showed me a lot tonight. Lewis shook off the early problem and made several nice grabs.
8. Billy McMullen's confidence has to be very good right now. He made several big catches and got the first one out of the way like Dawk said.
9. Reggie Brown doesn't look like a rookie to me, folks. I said this when I was up at Lehigh and I'll say it again now - I believe he will contribute. Forget the Eagles young WR histories under Reid, I think Reggie will be the one to break the mold.
10. Todd Herremans looked OK for his first NFL game and being the #1 LT. He got mixed up on a blitz by PIT and let Farrior get through. He downblocked and Farrior went outside to get to the QB. He did have one good pancake block in pass protection though.
11. Adrien Clarke about got Koy killed by Brett Keisel. Clarke totally blew his assignment and blocked the wrong guy. Keisel had a clean shot at Koy.
12. LJ Smith had back-to-back penalties on one drive. He false started and then he held on a Westbrook run negating a nice gain. He did make a nice catch on that TD from Donovan.
13. The offense was rusty early on with the penalties but they finally put together a good solid drive. I liked how Donovan looked early and often to his young WRs. Build the confidence.
14. Can't really say much about the first team defense since they only played one series thanks to the INT and two STs failures. They didn't get a lot of work at all tonight. But that's OK.
15. Rod Hood had a nice INT, great positioning.
16. Quintin Mikell made a rookie mistake by trying to go for an INT instead of separating the WR from the ball. It resulted in a 32 yard gain.
17. Matt McCoy showed good recognition skills in diagnosing that reverse. He is a guy who you can tell likes to hit. He gave up a long pass to Matt Kranchick, but that was a perfect throw to him and wasn't much Matt could do.
18. Ryan Moats, like I've said before, is a very capable inside runner. He gets inside the big bodies and can turn out nice runs. His center of gravity is very low and he's got a thick build. I really like watching him play.
19. Mike McMahon looked very good tonight. I think he might be one of those guys who do not practice well, but when the game comes he plays well.
20. Bruce Perry is bulked up from last year and it showed on his TD run. He ran that Steeler over with no problems. I'd love to see him get more work at RB.
21. Chris Samp has nice hands, eh? When I saw him at Lehigh he caught everything thrown to him.
22. I bet Corey Peoples' head will be on a swivel next game, huh? He got smoked on that one play by Fred Gibson.
23. Mike Patterson and Keyonta Marshall were getting nice pressure up the gut. Patterson was blatantly held on one play by Chukky Okobie and if not for that he would've killed Batch.
24. The most important thing was that there was NO MAJOR INJURIES. So despite several aspects of the game looking rusty, they did not lose any players.
Dare I say it? The offense has some nice weapons.

Was this the delayed blitz that got in McNabb's face? I don't recall who got through, but if it's the play I'm thinking of Herremans was already engaged and Westbrook was blocking out when the delayed blitzer took off running. Herremans saw him and got out an arm but he couldn't slow him down enough. Was nice recognition on his part to see the blitzer, but there wasn't much he could do being engaged already. For a rookie playing with the 1st string in his first NFL game he was pretty impressive to me.
Did anyone else happen to catch that fat chick passed out in the stands? :-D
Thoughts on the game:
Positives:
McNabb looked good out there after the miscommunication with Lewis on the first pass, and he seemed like he trusted most of the WRs, something I didn't always think he did with Thrash/Pinkston.
The WRs looked great. From Brown to Samp, they all caught what was thrown at them.
Short is a freak. Can't wait to see him smashing wedges on ST again this year.
Moats looked very good. I know it was against the 3rd team, but he has some power for such a tiny build. His two TD runs were very nice.
I hope they find room for Perry on this team if he stays healthy. I love the attitude and he runs with power.
McMahon. That came out of nowhere for me. He was brutal at TC when I was there but fantastic tonight. Hopefully he keeps it up the rest of the preseason.
Negatives:
I thought Roderick Hood got beat a few times after that nice INT. I'm not too worried about it though.
The DLine didn't seem to get much push throughout the game, but I thought the front 7 played well in run defense, so I guess it really shouldn't be considered a negative.
McCoy was inconsistent, but he'll improve.
ST was pathetic, but I have confidence in Harbaugh.
Overall I'd say the game was positive for the Eagles. Most of the question marks I had going in were pleasantly answered, and there were no major injuries, and best of all, Eagles football is back. Can't complain. :yay
yeah :-D
McCoy stood out. He was around the ball most of the time he was in there. I didn't notice Patterson that much though....
McMullen....maybe the light bulb finally lit up.... :-\
Brown and Moats....impressive and can't wait until Saturday vs another good defense in Baltimore...
After the INT, McNabb and Lewis looked good...
Detmer is so bad, he'll be brutal 3 years after he retires... :P
McMahon and Hall looked OK, though McMahon will likely get the #3 spot...
Detmer is awful. He overthrows and underthrows players by 5-10 yards sometimes. His arm strength is probably the worst out of any QB on an NFL roster. For someone with their fault being arm strength, he isn't very accurate either sometimes.
and I remember when Detmer smoked the Niners on MNF 2 years ago, idiots were saying he should replace McNabb because he just knows the WCO. It just shows you how very little a lot of Eagles fans know about the game. That applies to all fans though. The majority of sports fans out there know very little of what they are watching because most fans are casual.

No, it wasn't the delayed blitz. The lineman got around him and Westbrook tried picking him up--McNabb stepped up, and he was sacked. But, aside from that, I thought Herremans looked good. That was the only sack, and coming from a small time school to starting in the NFL against one of the best defenses in the league, and playing well has to boost your confidence.
Same with McMullen--his confidence has been shot ever since the first Dallas game in 2003. It's about time he gets it back.

I was watching my boy Patterson quite closely, and he WAS double-teamed quite a bit. He was lined up next to Grasmanis or Marshall for the most part, so it only made sense that the Steelers did give him a lot of attention.
Regardless, he played a very good first game. Not spectacular, but good.

That was great....it woke everyone up that I was watching the game with. I was very impressed with McMullen and Reggie. I've known Moats was good so it wasn't a surprize to me - I've rooted for Bruce Perry before and after last night I really hope he knocks off Mahe.
Other than the obvious bits about the starters looking good overall, I was most impressed by Reggie Brown and how smooth he looked. Short was a close second-- he was all over the field.
Moats had a really nice debut, but I'd still like to see either Buck come back healthy (for real this time), or see the Eagles pick up a bigger back as a pounder/change of pace. Mahe sucks as an NFL back, and he proved it again last night. But if you go with a trio of Westbrook/Moats/Perry...it's sort of like having the same sort of guy out there every play. The problem is, even if Buck gets healthy-- does anyone have ANY faith that he can stay healthy? It'll be a question mark all year.
Oh, and it was pretty gracious of McNabb to try to take the heat for that first INT-- that crime had Lewis's prints all over it. Smart, though, considering how important Lewis's confidence will be this year.
other than the embarrassing special teams performance....the game couldnt have went much better for the birds

Talking ebonics is pathetic. I don't care if you're black, white, asian, hispanic, inuit, or whatever.
Regarding Mahe, I couldn't agree more. I don't see anything from him that makes me want him on this team anymore. He's absolutely 100% useless.

Good stuff. Moats and Brown look like the real deal. Brown learned in training camp what Mitchell couldn't in 3 seasons. Moats style reminds me of Priest Holmes. We got a deal with McMahon. Looks like neckbeard is going tp be permanent holder.

He has some sort of degenerative lazy eye. It gets worse and worse every year.
That's from when Scott was in Jet's camp as a pretend WR and got drilled in the eye with a pass. His eye was pretty damaged.

He should have tried catching the ball with his hands instead of his face.
oh yeah, I noticed that the new DE, Jaqua Thomas, seemed to get some good push when he was in the game.
QuoteBut if you go with a trio of Westbrook/Moats/Perry...it's sort of like having the same sort of guy out there every play.
Reid did mention, after he drafted Moats, that he'd like to fire as many 'Westbrooks' at the defense as possible. He doesn't seem to value the big inside runner as much as Cowher or Schottenheimer. This could spell trouble for Bucky if he doesn't get healthy pronto.
Spadaro comments on the Detmer/McMahon situation:
QuoteI think we all know the deal: If it is a long-term need, McMahon would probably be the guy. I need to see more from him, get to understand his game more. He is a bit erratic, but I love the energy and the athletic ability.
He didn't try to defend keeping Koy as the #2... :sly
all i gotta say is that Samms(sp/?) guy had the catch of the game. that was awesome. the balance and concentration he showed to turn like that while running, make the catch and stay on his feet, while staying in bounds, was incredible. :yay :yay

I thought the protection on the right side was solid. Pressure against the first team was coming from the middle/left. Overall, protection and run-blocking were much better than they were against the Stillers last season.
