Title: Other NFL Teams Training Camp News & Notes
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on July 25, 2005, 07:04:04 PM
Figured I'd crank up a thread for news, notes, injuries and other stuff from around the NFL camps...

I found this nice little tidbit on the Falcons MB via the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

QuoteThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The final horn sounded shortly after 5 p.m. The only thing consistent seemed to be the heat, with T.J. Duckett and Chad Lavalais among the more obvious sufferers. Lavalais sat out a good while after going down with what appeared to be heat-related cramps. Duckett was driven off (sitting up) on a trainer's cart, but went to the training room under his own power. Not sure the immediate status of either. Some quick observations, which have to be quick because it's hard to focus on specific individuals very long with 100 bodies running all over the place:

*OK, so Vick didn't look sharp. He had some good passes, but lots of overthrows, underthrows and sideway throws. One didn't have to watch the passes as much as listen to Vick's verbal reaction to them. Quite a few, um, negative soundbites. His first interception came courtesy of DeAngelo Hall on one-on-one passing drills. On a six-on-seven drill, Price (!) bailed him out with a couple of nice digs out of the ground. On 11-on-11, he overthrew a wide-open Alge Crumpler on a rollout. The next play, Vick rolled out again. This time, he kept the ball himself and ripped off 30 yards. I'm just sayin.

*Matt Schaub had his woes, too. So let's not start with the Schaub-should-play nonsense.

*Ty Detmer is still a Falcon. Who knew?

*Scary sight of the day: Vick and Dunn tripping over each other on a handoff exchange. The collision of fibulas was loud, and brought about a collective "ooh" from players and fans alike.

Atta boy, Ronnie Mex. Keep up the shoddy QB play this year. Maybe one of these days the announcers attached to your sack will see that you're a below average QB with good speed.

Hines ward > Michael Vick.

Mike can just run.  Hines can run AND catch.

More on Vick from Fat Len:

QuoteFLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Here are five observations on the Atlanta Falcons, based on the July 25 afternoon practice:

1. The good news is that quarterback Michael Vick plays with such passion that every foible, as head coach Jim Mora pointed out, is frustrating to the NFL's most electrifying performer. That means the game means something to him personally. The bad news on Monday afternoon? That Vick, at least in the passing game, had so many legitimate sources of frustration.

"He's a perfectionist," Mora said. "He wants everything he does to be perfect." In the first on-field session of camp, Vick didn't even approach mediocre, let alone perfection. Yeah, it was the first practice, the first workout in months in pads, and the transition from throwing a ball in shorts and a T-shirt to being totally padded up is always a dramatic step. It takes time, just from a practical standpoint, to reach a comfort zone in pads. So it's a bit unfair to judge Vick's progress at the outset of Year 2 in the Falcons' bastichization of the West Coast offense, on one 2½-hour session on a sweltering afternoon.

But the point of making training camp observations is to allow readers to see practice through ESPN.com's eyes. And these eyes saw a lot of poor throws. Vick was, in a word, brutal at times. And that might not even accurately describe his afternoon.   :-D He was too high. He was too low. He was long and he was short. Vick looked anything but ready to ratchet up his completion percentage to the levels that typically accompany a West Coast-style passing design. His body language belied his frustration. At one point, tight end and favorite target Alge Crumpler, following one particularly scattershot effort, returned to the huddle and placed his arm around Vick's shoulders.

But even more disappointing than his performance in throwing the ball was Vick's slipshod footwork on too many occasions. Hard to imagine, we agree, for a player so agile and nifty, but the guy looked like he had two left feet at times. Vick still tries, or at least he did Monday, to do too much just with his arm. You generate velocity and even accuracy, from the feet up. But Vick rarely squared up, didn't get his feet set, had too many skewed release points. There is also a kind of "jump" in Vick's drop-and-plant, one that, mechanically, forces him to divert his eyes.

Here's hoping that, as Vick strives to move forward as a passer, Monday's first impressions are not lasting ones.

Counterpoint from Petey King

Quote5. I think one of the great things about watching this team practice is the beauty of the ball that Mike Vick throws. Gorgeous pass after gorgeous pass.

Yep.  Vick has a very strong arm and throws a tight spiral.  Unfortunately for the Falcons and their fans, it's quite misguided at times.

I can't wait for the inevitable 'dear god did you see that hit, I think I just barfed and got wood at the same time' hit that is going to end Vick's career. It'll be better than Joe T's broken leg.

That Hollis hit last year was awesome. Not really awe-inspiring or potentially career ending, but he just smashed Vick with teh gut and completely stopped him in his tracks. Having said that I think I'd like Lewis to ruin his life with a hit. Knock the herp right out of him.

I believe Gates was one of those Exclusive Rights Free Agents. When it comes to ERFA's the team holds every ounce of leverage.

I believe their former C (Jason Ball) was an ERFA and they tendered him, he refused to sign it and tried to hold out for more and they cut him loose.

However, Gates deserves a new contract. This is a warranted holdout.

QuoteBurress, Wilson Forced to Leave Practice

July 30, 2005

ALBANY, N.Y. - Wide receiver Plaxico Burress, one of the Giants main off-season free agent acquisitions, was forced to leave the field late in the first practice of training camp with a hyperextended right knee. Burress was injured when he ran a "go" route down the left sideline and had to stop and go up for a ball thrown by Tim Hasselbeck. While in the air, Burress collided with cornerback Ahmad Treaudo. Burress' right leg was extended when he hit the ground.

"There was an underthrown ball, they went up and got tangled," said coach Tom Coughlin. "They came down, and right now they are calling it a hyperextended knee and we'll see."

Coughlin is cautiously hopeful that the injury is not serious based on the initial report from vice president of medical services Ronnie Barnes.

"Well anytime a player is injured," said Coughlin, "it puts a damper on anything. It's really unfortunate, and hopefully he will fight his way through it. I mean we need to find out all the information about it, but if that's what it is, a hyperextended knee, then he'll make good progress coming back."

Burress is undergoing further tests and evaluation to determine the full nature of his injury.

Further tests = MRI (according to espn radio)

QuoteThe Cardinals on Saturday waived three-year veteran defensive tackle Wendell Bryant, the team's first-round choice in the 2002 draft, and the 12th player chosen overall that year.

The release of Bryant, just 24, continues the trend of purging the roster of most of the underachieving players who were obtained before coach Dennis Green arrived.

A former Wisconsin standout, Bryant appeared in just 29 games in three seasons and had just nine starts. He recorded 51 tackles and one sack.

"When you look at the numbers, and who we have along the defensive line, we just did not see a role for Wendell," Green said.

The team added journeyman defensive tackle DeVone Claybrooks, who has played in 13 games in stints with Tampa Bay (2002), San Francisco (2003) and Dallas (2004).

What do you think the reaction would be if the Eagles released Lito Sheppard after only 3 years?

Obviously Green didn't draft him, but that just shows the ineptitude of the upper management there in Arizona. Although I do think they are turning a corner.

Their 2002 and 2003 1st rounders were extremely questionable (Bryant, Pace, Johnson)

QuoteChiefs' Mitchell hurts knee at training camp
By ELIZABETH MERRILL The Kansas City Star

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Chiefs wide receiver Freddie Mitchell may leave camp to have his knee scoped, coach Dick Vermeil said Sunday after the team's morning special-teams workout.

Vermeil said the injury "doesn't appear to be a serious one," but it's obviously a blow to Mitchell, the former Philadelphia Eagle who's fighting for a spot on the roster. Mitchell, who signed as a free agent in June, had impressed the Chiefs coaches through the first three days of camp with his work ethic and ability to make several difficult catches.

Bring Wendell Bryant into camp!  ;) Hey, you never know. The Eagles coaching staff took Darwin Walker off the Cards hands, who was thought of as an underachiever with a bad work ethic, and turned him into a monster who has been probably our most reliable and explosive DT over the past couple of seasons.

I'm sure he'll be willing to sign for practically nothing. Just see how he does. Maybe add a little incentive for Corey to get his fat arse into camp as well.

Rookie sprains right knee on his first day of camp; Top pick Clayton still unsigned
By Jamison Hensley
Sun Staff
Originally published August 2, 2005

While first-round draft pick Mark Clayton has yet to report to training camp, the Ravens' top defensive rookie might never return this season.

Linebacker Dan Cody sprained the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee midway through the team's first practice yesterday, officially sidelining the second-round pick indefinitely.

Although he will be re-evaluated later in camp when the swelling has settled down, the Ravens have resigned themselves privately to losing him for the year. A magnetic resonance imaging test revealed between a second- and third-degree sprain, which are the two most severe conditions.

The loss of Cody would deliver a sizable blow to the Ravens' pass rush. He was projected to play rush end in passing situations, the role previously reserved for Peter Boulware.

"A lot was going to be expected of him," defensive coordinator Rex Ryan said.

Cody's injury is even more jolting when considering he was never touched.

In the final team drill, he was trying to change directions on a flea flicker, spinning to his left when the running back tossed the ball back to the quarterback. Then, after planting his foot to run downfield, he just dropped to the ground and held his knee.

It's been a frenetic first two days of camp for Cody. He signed his four-year contract just before reporting Sunday night and needed to be carted off the field a day later.

Cody walked gingerly on crutches through the team hotel, applying no weight on his right leg. This marks the latest setback for Cody, a first-round talent who plummeted in the draft because many teams were wary of his bout with clinical depression in 2001.

"You never want to see an injury, but it's bound to happen," defensive end Tony Weaver said. "Regardless of who goes down, the next man has to step up."

The next man is Roderick Green, a fifth-round pick in 2004. He will take over for Cody as the other pass rushing end opposite Terrell Suggs, but the Ravens won't be able to replace the depth at strong-side linebacker.

The original plan was to have Cody rotate with starter Adalius Thomas, who would be able to contribute more on special teams (where he was a Pro Bowl performer). With Cody down, the Ravens likely will use Thomas primarily on defense unless they can add another linebacker who can rush the passer.

One possible candidate could be Boulware. Team officials have not contacted the franchise's all-time sack leader, but wouldn't rule out his coming back.

Boulware, who missed all of last season with knee and toe injuries, was a salary cap casualty by the Ravens three months ago after he refused to restructure his contract. Last month, he wanted to show he had recovered from his injuries with a workout, which was attended by the Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Still, Boulware remains a free agent.

Asked last night whether he would consider re-signing with the Ravens, Boulware said: "Anything is possible. My mind is open to it."

Meanwhile, there has been no progress in contract talks with Clayton, the 22nd overall selection. The sides, though, continue to negotiate.

"I have no further knowledge as to what the contractual situation is with Mark Clayton," coach Brian Billick said.

Talks should have been helped with the deal signed last week by Oakland cornerback Fabian Washington, who was taken one spot after Clayton. Using the league's unofficial slotting system, Clayton should earn just slightly more than Washington's five-year, $7.8 million contract.

Asked if Clayton's deal could be reached quickly, Billick said, "Certainly, but it's not my concern right now."

Quarterback Kyle Boller, who boarded Clayton at his house during minicamps this offseason, talked with him Sunday and appeared optimistic that the receiver would come to camp shortly.

"He wants to be here," said Boller, who was also a holdout two years ago. "I was in the same situation. There's a business side to it. I just hope he will be here as soon as possible. I feel confident that they will work it out and I expect to throw the ball to him a whole lot."

QuoteSpears' injury 'doesn't look good'

01:19 PM CDT on Friday, August 5, 2005

By MATT MOSLEY / DallasNews.com

OXNARD, Calif. - Cowboys first-round selection, defensive lineman Marcus Spears, injured his right leg during morning practice on Friday.

Spears was placed on a cart and taken from the field.

"It doesn't look good," said Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Jones said Spears would have an MRI exam conducted on his ankle, knee and groin.

The incident occured during team drills. It appeared that a player rolled over Spears' right leg on play where running back Anthony Thomas took a handoff over the right side of the line.

"It's part of the game, unfortunately," said veteran defensive lineman La'Roi Glover. "It's very disappointing to see one of the guys you were going to lean on go down."

:-o Freddie talking again....to Peter King

QuoteI think the Eagles, whatever they're saying, have to be concerned at the prospect of playing three wideouts named Lewis, McMullen and Brown. Whatever happens to Terrell Owens -- contractually or with his groin -- the depth at receiver is going to sorely tested, as is the ability to make people fear the offense. I'm not saying Todd Pinkston (out for the year with a torn Achilles) is at all special, nor Freddie Mitchell (gone to Kansas City via low-cost free-agency), but the Eagles have lost their second and third/fourth receivers for the year, and as Mitchell told me over the weekend: "Last year, that offense would walk on the field and know they were going to beat the other team. This year, they've got to have some questions in their mind with all the new guys, and not knowing if they're going to have Brian Westbrook." I'm sure Westbrook will be in by opening day, and Owens will likely be there too. But after that, they'll be counting on quite a few very regular guys.

QuoteCoughlin dissatisfied with Giants' offense
The Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. - There seems to be little disagreement that the Giants' offense has lagged behind the defense during training camp.

On several occasions, head coach Tom Coughlin has been seen screaming and gesturing during practice,
most recently on Monday morning when he ordered the second team off the field for a play after quarterback Jesse Palmer was inadvertently tripped by one of his offensive linemen. :-D

During the joint practice with the Jets Saturday, the first-team offense was ineffective for most of the exercise. Monday, they were sluggish early before finding their stride.

"The offense has to learn to start fast and finish fast," Coughlin said. "Right now we start off by floundering around and then we get into things and work it out. We can't be like that. My patience for those types of practices is wearing thin."

Running back Tiki Barber echoed Coughlin's sentiments.

"We stunk today," he said matter-of-factly. "It's a mental grind right now, and guys are thinking too much instead of reacting and just playing football, and it's slowing us down. But I expect that to work itself out in the next few days."

---

Injury report: Starting cornerback Will Allen missed his second day of practice with a strained groin and was replaced by second-round draft pick Corey Webster. Other players who missed practice Monday morning were safety Curry Burns (concussion); linebackers Barrett Green (knee), Nick Greisen (hamstring strain), Reggie Torbor (strained hip flexor) and T.J. Hollowell (ankle sprain); tight end Jeremy Shockey (hamstring strain); wide receiver Jamaar Taylor (strained hip flexor); defensive end Eric Moore (knee sprain); and offensive linemen Wayne Lucier (calf strain) and Lewis Kelly (groin). Tim Carter (hamstring strain) sat out the evening workout.

Shockey dressed for the evening practice but did not participate in any drills. Taylor returned for individual workouts but did not take part in 11-on-11 drills.

Random team notes:

QuoteNFL | Rolle agrees to deal with Cards

Associated Press

Antrel Rolle, the kind of aggressive, physical defender coveted by Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green, agreed to a six-year contract with the team yesterday.

The University of Miami cornerback, the Cardinals' first-round draft selection, missed nine days of training camp.

Financial terms were not immediately available. Rolle is expected to start at left cornerback.

Cowboys. Jacob Rogers, making a strong bid to be the starting offensive right tackle for Dallas, missed practice while having an MRI exam on his sore left shoulder. Owner Jerry Jones said the exam found no major problems in the shoulder. Rogers had surgery on it in the off-season.

Ravens. Jamal Lewis is expected to put on pads and practice for the first time today.

The running back spent four months in a federal prison and two months in a halfway house for aiding a drug deal five years ago.

Jets. Quarterback Chad Pennington and newly signed cornerback Ty Law will not play in the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions on Friday, coach Herman Edwards said.

Broncos. Maurice Clarett missed another practice while he had an MRI exam on his sore right groin. The third-round draft pick has missed several of Denver's training-camp practices with injuries.

Rams. Cornerback Dwight Anderson, who had been competing for St. Louis' nickel-back job, was released for violating team rules.

Coach Mike Martz would not comment, but a Rams employee said Anderson missed curfew over the weekend.

I'll use an idiom: Fans of the National Football League ask what have you done for me lately?  As such they do not remember the years of success the Eagles enjoyed prior to the signing of the motherfarging prick Terrell Owens. They erroneously believe that the Eagles will actually falter without him, probably even losing to the fargtards at least once.

I WANT Bledsoe to play. That would pretty much guarantee that our entire secondary (and some dlinemen) would make it to the Pro-Bowl.

I just found it amusing that Cowboys fans and national media were ignoring that Bledsoe sucked ass and was a statue in the pocket waiting to get injured, while the backups suck even more ass.

HOUSTON (AP) - Oakland Raiders starting outside linebacker Sam Williams tore a knee ligament Thursday during a practice with the Houston Texans.

Raiders coach Norv Turner said Williams tore an anterior cruciate ligament, but was unsure which knee was injured.

Williams, a third-year player from Fresno State, was in nine games last season and started four. He had 22 tackles and defended three passes. He was injured while trying to make a block in morning practice.

Grant Irons will likely start in his place.

Not like Rogers was a stud or anything because he was hurt last year too, but he was being counted on to try to stabilize the RT position there.

Now they're looking at Kurt Vollers, Rob Pettitti or Torrin Tucker as the RT and the three of them are shtein.

shtein RT vs. Jevon Kearse = Dead Bledsoe

Jerrah wanted him to play through it (http://www.cowboysplus.com/topstorync/stories/082005cpcowbriefs.2255f2d4.html)

Quote"We got our expectations up because he played well early in camp, but when you look at his injury situation in college and how he's trying to prove himself as a young player in the NFL," Jones said of Rogers, "sometimes you have to play through something like this.

"We didn't think it was that serious. It was discouraging when he decided to have surgery. We had hopes that he would play through it."

Microfracture surgery isn't a procedure that's done for shteins and giggles...that is a serious and potentially career threateing surgery. Yet they wanted the dude to play through it.

Arthroscopic surgery is something simple, Skeletor. He could play through something like that. But jeez...ripping the dude for choosing something that s that serious? Its not like he likely chose to potentially end his career for the hell of it.

from PFT:

QuoteBELL'S SHOULDER SHOT?

In response to our report from this morning regarding the private concerns within K.C. that signing linebacker Kendrell Bell to a long-term, big-bonus deal might have been a mistake, a league source with knowledge of Bell's career in Pittsburgh tells us that Bell has a "really bad shoulder" and that the joint "will not hold up" this season.

Within the first few days of free agency, there was a report that Bell was in New York and had left abruptly.  Per the source, Bell had actually agreed to terms with the Giants, but then the Giants pulled out due to the results of his physical.

On top on his health concerns, Bell is in the process of moving from inside linebacker in the 3-4 to outside linebacker in the 4-3.  Although, in some respects, the positions are equivalent since the outside 'backer in a 3-4 mimics a defensive end in a 4-3, the fact remains that Bell is working his way into a new defensive scheme with at least one old injury that might prevent him from ever being as effective as he once was in Pittsburgh.  So, in the end, his name likely will be added to the list of former Steeler linebackers who left via free agency but were never as good with their new teams.

Glad we got Jeremiah back.

Have you guys seen how zesty Ben Roethlisberger looks this year? Man, he looks bad. I've read a few stories on PFT about how a lot of the team thinks his head got too big and it looks like they could be right.

Duce is out until October 10th, Bettis hurt his calf last night, Roethlisberger looks like poo and they no longer have Plax.

I wouldn't be shocked to see them lose that division to Baltimore despite Kyle Boller looking even shteintier.

Big Ben looked like shtein the second half of last year. He was horrible. The run game and the defense saved his ass from losing all of those games. But no media hack will talk about that for some reason.

I sure hope so, I have so many Steelers fan friends and they piss me off so bad.  I kept telling them last year that eventhough Ben was having an awesome season the playoffs are a whole new ball game.  They didn't want to listen and he looked like a rookie in both of those games.

Caver cut by the Chiefs.

Vermeil quotes:
"The first player I want to talk about is veteran Quinton Caver, who's been with us for three and a half years. Done a really great job on special teams, made over 40 special teams tackles and started four games for us. Just a super guy but with our draft choices and the acquisition of Kendrell Bell it makes it really tough for that kind of guy (to make it). By letting him go a week earlier than we have to, we give him an opportunity to be evaluated by the rest of league and we may be able to help him get a job.

"But he's a great kid and he's helped my wife on the Operation Breakthrough program and been good in the community. We'll miss him; you always miss those kinds of guys who help you build a football team. But that's part of it."

Oh, just as an aside:

"Q: Do you have any interest in Corey Simon who is now available?

VERMEIL: "I would. We haven't talked about yet. But I plan to talk about it. I just don't know if we have the money that it would take to get involved. He would be a tremendous addition, believe me. I think everybody in the National Football League at least has to have an interest to inquire."

I think PFT was the first to present this theory.  It's just mere coincidence.

If Abraham would've been released from his frnachise tag, many teams would pony up the big bucks to get him.  Teams are always looking for a premier pass-rushing DE.  Just last season, Ogunleye got his money even though he sat out the entire preseason.
