Looks like we now have a need at backup safety and at KR.
Wow...that sounds pretty serious. Damn shame-- he brought a certain electricity to the field. Hope he makes it back.
oh for fargs sake. :boom
I think Rod Hood takes over the return role easily, but a backup safety is needed no doubt.

there is a "nasty" line in the PE.com message that makes me VERY nervous about this: "I'm in the process of trying to get my leg working again."
S--- happens, but why does it happen to the Eagles so often! >:(

They could also, I guess, slide Ware to Safety on the depth chart and get yet another CB.
Sounds like he got an infection...the surgery took place over a week ago; the injury occured a week before the surgery.
:'(
Get well soon JR.

Please read.
The surgery was "exploratory", meaning they just wanted to figure out exactly what was wrong. They found that he damaged an important nerve in the leg.
Has nothing to do with any "infection".
WTF?!? Bizarre.
That blows.
One of the best young role-players on the team.
Thats messed up, I like Reed, he was a good player. I really liked him on kick returns.

Hey, I'm just speculating.
Don't you find it rather odd that they kept this news quiet for -- what is it -- 10 days?
So because they kept it quiet you come to the conclusion he had an infection?

Why the hell was he jumping over a fence?

What in the world was he doing jumping over a fence?
Hopefully he can recover fully and resume his career. :boom

last years draft class looks to be cursed....
Shawn Andrews - broken leg
Matt Ware
J.R. Reed - career threating injury
Trey Darilek
Thomas Tapeh - career threating injury
Andy Hall - glug glug glug
Dexter Wynn
Adrien Clarke - IR last season
Bruce Perry - IR last season (i think)
Dominic Furio - IR last season

Latest from Spads:
QuoteI'm not a doctor. I don't think it looks good, however. That is a critical nerve to control the foot and ankle area, I believe. I think Coach Reid said it all in his statement.
I dont think using Ware at backup safety is the best use of his skills or the best way to get him on the field. It's easier to find a backup safety (a dime a dozen really) than it is to find a decent CB. Now if Ware ends up sucking at CB it's a different story. IMO.

Tapeh, from every account so far, will be back in time for camp. It wasn't as serious as initially thought, remember?
And Andrews' injury was a clean break, he'll be back at full strength as well.
Don't forget, the draft class before with McDougle and Green's injuries so early.
His initial returns were electrifying.
If this turns out to be career threatening, it would really suck for him and the Eagles.
Get well soon, J.R.
Ye Gods. Y'all wanna start talking about curses let's talk about the safety curse that seems to be happening! Seriously, Reed is the third safety in recent years to have a career-threatening knee injury-Rashard Cook and Damon Moore are the other two and when we drafted them we had high expectations for the both of them. Throw in Blaine "Slow School" Bishop (who said he was playing through injury that season), the injuries that Mikell had last season and the almighty Dawkins himself being brought low by a Lis Franc sprain and we're talking epidemic, people! :paranoid

DNL just said that rumor is, Reed was being chased in the yard by a dog?
He's still a farging idiot. He made it to be an important role player on an NFL team from South Florida. And he potentially ends his career jumping over a fence?

shtein happens. i know they have to be careful in the offseason, but i really don't expect an nfl player to wrap themselves in charmin for 6 months.
hell for all we know he could have been running
with his dog, playing. or he could have just been running to keep in shape, using the fence as a hurdle to train with. or maybe we'll find out the truth because the whole thing will be on COPS next friday.
whatever happened. i would bet any amount of money that he has jumped that fence dozens, if not hundreds of times before. or at least ran and hurdled that height, if not that exact fence.
hey, it's life, shtein happens. i feel bad for the guy.
the only way i wont is if the story is, that JR Reed yelled to his bud, "Hey, want to see me ruin my leg??? watch this!" and then jumped into the fence.
What the farg... :-\
I hope he makes it back. Perhaps stash him on one of the many lists they have at their disposal (IR, reserve-nonfootball injury, etc) for a year and hope they get it right during surgery and rehab.
Sucks for JR because he really had a lot of potential.
And if his career is over, he can always get a job at Fleer. I remember they did an interview thing with JR on Comcast where they took him to the Fleer factory and the guy said JR's knowledge of the card business was amazing.

QuoteHARD TO REED
By LES BOWEN
bowenl@phillynews.com
AGENT JONATHAN KLINE vowed yesterday that client J.R. Reed "will play again,'' but of course, as much as Kline believes in Reed, he really can't guarantee that; Kline has no control over the 1-millimeter-a-day pace of nerve regeneration.
Reed, who showed promise last season as a rookie kick returner and backup safety for the Eagles, cut the back of one of his knees Feb. 22 jumping a fence on his property near Tampa, Fla., the team announced yesterday. Reed damaged the peroneal nerve, which affects movement and sensation in the lower leg and foot. The team said Reed underwent exploratory surgery March 1 in Baltimore, by Dr. Tom Graham - coincidentally, the doctor who told the Phils' Pat Burrell he did not need wrist surgery last year.
Graham did not return a call seeking comment, but two Philadelphia orthopedists contacted by the Daily News underlined the seriousness of the injury.
"If that nerve does not come back, he won't play again,'' said Dr. John D. Kelly IV, vice chair of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at Temple University Hospital. But Kelly said that given Reed's youth, if the damage is relatively slight, he has "a reasonable chance of recovery.''
"If he lacerated his peroneal nerve, that's a serious threat to his career,'' said Dr. Art Bartolozzi, former Eagles and Flyers team orthopedist, who added that the nerve is very close to the skin as it runs along the back of the knee.
Neither Kelly nor Bartolozzi could recall a professional athlete suffering such an injury. Sometimes when athletes suffer serious knee-ligament injuries, the peroneal nerve is stretched or compressed, but it's rarely lacerated, they said. Sometimes people with serious peroneal nerve injuries undergo graft procedures, if part of the nerve is damaged beyond repair or is missing, they said.
Kelly stressed that nerve recovery is "not uniformly predictable.''
The team supplied no details about why Reed was jumping a fence, which leg was injured, when the Eagles found out about the injury, or why the surgery - which Kline said the Eagles arranged - wasn't announced before yesterday. It seemed likely that the Eagles didn't want rivals to know they were missing their top kick returner as they prepare for the April 23-24 draft, but rumors about Reed's mishap were beginning to circulate among the media, forcing the team's hand.
"I was trying to jump over a fence, but unfortunately, I got caught on top of that fence and cut my leg,'' Reed said in a statement released by the team. "It's a bad situation, but I'm going to be very positive about it going forward. I'm in the process of trying to get my leg working again. I believe in Dr. Graham and I believe in myself that I will get better.''
Reed, who is believed to be staying in the Philadelphia area while he recovers, could not be reached for further comment. Because his is a non-football-related injury, there is a chance the Eagles could opt out of paying him, though the team had no comment on that possibility last night.
Kelly and Bartolozzi said an athlete with a peroneal nerve injury would be unable to run, because he wouldn't be able to lift his foot. Bartolozzi emphasized that gaining the degree of recovery required to run the way a kick returner has to run could take quite a while, if it occurs at all. At a millimeter a day, Reed might need something like 200 millimeters of nerve regrowth, from his knee to his foot, Bartolozzi said.
Kline, the agent, emphasized that Reed has about 4 ½ months before the start of training camp, and a positive attitude toward doing the necessary work.
"J.R. is a fantastic person and a hard worker,'' Kline said. "I'm very hopeful he can be ready by training camp.''
Reed, 23, was the Eagles' fourth-round pick last year out of South Florida. His flowing dreadlocks and slashing return style quickly gained fans' approval. Reed returned 33 kickoffs for a 23.1-yard average and made 17 tackles. Rod Hood showed promise returning kicks toward the end of the season, but the Birds might need to think about a returner in the draft. They almost certainly have to think about a safety, with Quintin Mikell now their only healthy backup at either safety spot.
"I feel terrible for J.R.,'' coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "He's worked his entire life to try to make it this far. And to have a major setback like this occur in such a freak circumstance is awful.''
After just about every doctor under the sun (who never saw TOs injury) had comment that he could do further damage and there would be no way for him to play, etc....I'll just choose to wait and see and wish JR the best in his recovery. With all due respect to the doctors who commented, they have no actual idea of how he'll recover.

I doubt what the doctor's said is incorrect. They were all pretty vague on the specifics of the injury. But it sounds pretty bad from that description - if the nerve has to regrow to the foot, he must have damn near severed it.

It obviously depends on the severity of the damage to that nerve.
Just rub some 'tussin on it.

I can't believe people are calling J.R. stupid and a idiot for jumping a fence. What is he supposed to do, live in a friggen' bubble? It is possible for people to make mistakes that aren't a result of them being dumb. If you jump a fence and slip, or get cut, it's called an accident.
