As some of you are no doubt aware, a regular poster on the EMB named Eaglesfan73 (or Herb to his friends) battled through a near fatal battle with cancer a couple of years ago. To this point, it appeared that he had beaten the dreaded disease. However, Herb posted a thread today with some extremely distressing news regarding a possible relapse of the disease.
I know many of you have a strong distaste for the EMB and under normal circumstances, I wouldn't post a thread concerning the goings-on there. However, in this case, considering the stellar character of the person in question, I thought I would post this in the off-chance that any of you might wish to extend well-wishes to this truly inspirational Eagles fan.
Thoughts and prayers may be offered here...

Romey.
I remember Herb from the old EMB. My thoughts are with him and I hope everything works out for him tom.
Yeah, I remember him from back in the day too. He always seemed like a good guy. I hope everything works out for him.
I remember reading about his battle on the old board and I hope for the best for him.
He was a nice guy when he posted here for a short while. I hope for the best for him too.
I was told of a thread here and I leave this morning for the CT scan a find out what road I have to travel with this "abnormal mass" they have found below my lung. I thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.. it truly means a lot and it sure did a few years back as well. Thanks 99.... Take care and will give an update as soon as I can...
Herb
Herb,
I wish you and Jess and the kids the best throughout this situation. You've got my best wishes and my hopes for the best. Please let us know as soon as you can how everything goes.
For those of you who haven't met Herb, he is one of the coolest, kindest and most down to earth people I've ever met. An overall awesome person, as is his wife.
Stay strong, bro! :)
Thanks and I will...

Indeed. ;D
Best wishes...and good luck with the scan. :cfhead
OK.... I am a little tired, but this is what they have found today. I have a 8x4x4 inch mass that is fluid under my left lung... They have to draw some fluid for testing so they can look and see if any cancer cells are involved... another new piece is they found 4 dark spots on my liver that are new and have to be looked at. What that entails I am not sure yet.... Maybe treatments or just a few shots of radiation.... I will found out tomorrow when I see my surgeon and cancer doc.... So I am looking at it as not good news, but not bad yet either... I think my school for OCS is long gone, but I have to look at a much smaller window right now. So hopefully I will be back tomorrow night and give a better or at least more detailed status...
Thanks for all the warm thoughts and posts.. it truly means a great deal.
Man 8x4x4.. that is huge heh? That is a mini football.... Jeez.... well anyways more to follow and thanks a million...

Thanks for the update, Herb. My thoughts and prayers will stay with you throughout this battle.

good luck Eaglesfan73.

Thankfully it's only fluid, not a solid mass. As for the cause...I wish I knew what to tell you.
Well, OCS may be out, but then you'll get to tell everyone not to call you "sir" since you work for a living. ;D

Well today was a long day at the doc's office for a whole lot of nothing... They did not take a sample of the mass because of complications with being around my intestine. The surgeon is going to decide this weekend what avenue to take (most likely cut the abdomine and get to it that way) and then Mon he briefs me and Tuesday early morning I go in for the surgery to find out what it is. They are not going to remove it because of the fear of cancer cells being inside the mass. So once the report comes back of what it is then I know if it is a long process of draining and eventually destroying the mass or the dreaded C word. Then I will be hit back up with chemo and this time some radiation... So keeping the faithing and wanting to just have a long drainage process, but prepping for the worst as well... Thanks again for all the posts and I will let you know what goes on... Right now the pain med is really kicking my butt. Need some sleep.. take care.
Herb
I'll be thinking of you this weekend, Herb...and praying that its not the C word again. :cfhead
Farging doctors are always so agonizingly slow sometimes. I bet if one of their family was in the same situation, they'd be pulling strings left and right to get tests done ASAP.
I have agree and BTW I love that picture of the PUG... I have two of them.. My male is exactly like that.. name is DMAC... Donovan McNabb... my female is pure black and named Zoe..... I love my Pugs... :yay
Herb, you're in my prayers. Just got a call Friday night that my grandfather is likely in the hospital for good and made the trek up to Reading, PA to see him yesterday. No one should ever have to go through what he's experiencing right now.

Ah...a man of taste! My guy is named Rocky. We talked about getting a second, but then we figure that we have enough work cleaning up after one (plus the human kids).
FF I am sorry to hear about that... Hospitals are tough period... I am going to be losing my grandmother soon because they moved her out and hospice has taken over... although we knew it for some time it is still tough... I just hope my junk will have no cancer involved in it. Had enough of that stuff in 01-02....
birder - they are a great dog... I love their attitudes... the female is such a lover dog... she is great and we always heard that they are rather grouchy, but not her... BTW I have 2 girls and one on the way too... :yay
Best wishes 73, we are all pulling for you here.
good luck Herb, wishing the best for you and the family.
I don't know you 73 but I hope everything works out for you man. Congrats on the soon to be new addition to the family. :yay
I'm hoping for a long drainage process for you....the only C word in use around these parts is "championship"...I hope to meet you either on Broad St. sometime in mid-February or at training camp next year. :yay
Update on EMB today: the 4 spots on his liver were cancer..... :'( :'(
He's headed to Birmingham... :(
shtein...Herb, if/when you read this...stay strong.
Man, I talked to him yesterday at the tailgate. Die-Hard called him up and we spoke to him for a little while. I was shocked to hear this earlier.
You know we're pulling and praying for you Herb. Stay strong and kick this things ass.
Yeah, Die-Hard told me at the tailgate too...awful news.
Sorry to hear that Herb. :'( Stay strong and I will be praying for you.
Well... it is official the "C" word is the real deal and this time it is in my liver.. I go next Friday to see a special Liver cancer doc to remove a part of my liver... then it is back to the chemo stuff again... I beat it once and I guess I will have to do it again... This one is going to be a little tougher, but I will just have to roll with it.. It is 7 spots about a quarter size a piece.. they are on the outside and inside of the liver... Man to just catch a break heh.... Well I will post again when I found out more... Thanks
Herb
Hey, I don't know you but I wish you well. Good luck, man. :)
Good luck Herb. I have said a prayer for you.
Herb :(
I'm so sorry to hear you have to go through this again, bro. :(

QuoteIn Honor of Herb Osterhout
The Eagles are proud to call Herb Osterhout a friend and were lucky enough to visit with him on a recent trip to Philadelphia. While in town, Herb and his wife Jess joined their friends Bob and his wife as they received a VIP tour of the NovaCare Complex. Then, a surprised Herb was escorted outside to watch the team as they practiced for the next day's game vs. the Green Bay Packers. But what shocked him the most, was when the team all came over after practice to shake Herb's hand. Everyone here at the Eagles is glad to have met Herb, and we all wish him well.

Hey Herb, if you're around, just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays. Hope all is going well, you're always in my thoughts and prayers.

Herb and his wife are awesome. I thought what the Eagles did for him was outstanding and it goes to show that the organization is as classy as can be. I'm confident he's going to fully recover. Excellent pictures and write-up. :yay
Best wishes to Herb & Jess :yay
That's great news, BigEd. Thanks for posting it here--I would honestly never have seen it otherwise. Nice to see that the organization is in touch with the fans at least enough to recognize people like Herb. He's been a die hard supporter and was a staple on the Eagles MB when I first started several years ago. Very classy move, and one which I'm elated to say isn't uncharacteristic of the Eagles.

Jesus.
I haven't been to the EMB in months, so the only "news" regarding Herb I've gotten was whatever a friend of mine had come across while there.
I love Herb. I do not want to even think about him not beating this again.
I'm gonna throw something in the mail to him, but, I'd appreciate it if someone could pass along my well wishes to him, if the opportunity arises.
Hey Blue! Nice to see ya.... :)
For those that don't have an EMB login, this part of his post is creepy... :-X
QuoteI also experienced a very scary moment the day I was admitted. I was confronted with a very dark figure that looked me in the face and I truly felt it was death. Then I was stuck in my artery on my leg and I left that place.
He's incredible. If anyone deserves a break, it's Herb. Just an indominable spirit there along with being one of the nicest guys I've ever met.

Here is the latest update from the EMB: (Nov. 25th)
QuoteTalked to Jess and although the chemo/radiation has been particulary rough this week for Herb, Herb was able to eat a little bit for Thanksgiving. Alittle good news is he feels that the tumor they are radiating is getting smaller...will know more soon after next CAT scan...
Very positive :yay
A quick update: although the pinned thread on EMB has been giving everyone hope, the latest news last night was that hospice has been called in.... :(
I hope that through his battle, he has been able to find happiness. I don't know what its like, how it feels or what it feels like to know someone who has battled through it...in this form. I hope he sends the cancer into remission and into high hell. I also hope that he has been able to find peace and harmony within his soul. I hope that in his final days he can find joy and satisfaction that he lived a special life, had people that loved him and was a proud member of the exclusive asylum called Eagles fans. I think one of the reasons that the Eagles are loved so much is because they are a perfect example of what life is. High highs and low lows...and everything in between. I know that when all of our times come, I know that we all will be able to take that to our graves .
Herb, I don't know you...but whatever strength you have, keep on fighting. This is life and sometimes you have to punch it straight back in the jaw. The impossible is possible. There is positive energy being channeled to you and your family now. Good luck herb. E-A-G-L-E-S.....EAGLES!

I was sad for him when the Eagles didn't win the Super Bowl last year... amazing that he hung in there for another year... c'mon Herb, stay with us until the Birds get the job done next year... hang in there.
I refuse to believe that Herb's gonna let this thing get the best of him. He'll bounce back. I know it.
:'(
A damn shame. Herb is a great guy and has a wonderful family.
I've never met Herb, nor have I frequented the EMB to "meet" him online. Yet, I get a feel from what people here say about him. He sounds like one of the "good guys," and it is sad to see one of those and his family suffer like this.
God bless you, Herb, and your family as well.
May your remaining time, whether it be days or years, be filled with grace, joy and love.
I've got to know Herb and Jess pretty well throughout the years. They are both great people, guys. Truly great people and its such a shame this is happening to such a great man. Romey said it best - its unbelievably tragic and I wish there was something we could do. The pinned thread is still up, so if you guys want to give him some kind words, I'm sure it would make him smile.
We love you Herbie.
Sad to see someone go that way..... Never met Herb though. All I hope is that if his time comes, he will be at peace with himself and that hbis loved ones are with him... That he has no regrets.
Herb, I hope you still have the energy to beat this thing and recover. Hang in there untill the Birds finally win the Super Bowl....
A thread on the EMBs just been pinned regarding Herb, the news is not good :'( If you have any last words for him I highly encourage you to post them. A phone number was left if you'd like to contact him late morning or early evening: 334-673-9527
I will never forget his laughter when Die-Hard and I called him from last year's Super Bowl.
God, he was so happy to see his beloved Birds finally make the big game.
One of the very, very few people I've ever met in this life that I can truly say I admire. In actuality, I'm humbled in the fact that I've known him. For those of you who haven't, trust me, his imminent passing is beyond heartbreaking. Well, at least his years-long suffering is finally coming to an end.

I've never met him personally but I was a regular member of the EMB before and after he got sick. He used to be one of the "regulars" so I remember him quite well. Always a good poster and obviously loved the Eagles. But everything I've heard about him from other posters who do know him always had great things to say about him. Keep fighting Herb.
It's a heartbreaking thing. Herb's been a true friend and he will be sorely missed.

The whole team came over to say hello....he got to meet Jaws....and he got a pic taken with Donovan.... :)
Edit: I just noticed that I posted the pics back on page 2. He first announced it was terminal in mid-October of 2004, so he battled for 15 more months after beating it the first time...
My family and I went through a situation like this with my mom this past spring and summer. It seems that the person's outlook on life has a huge impact on the others around them. If they are at peace with themselves and surrounded by their loved ones their passing can be seen as the continuation of a journey. My personal belief is a profound sense of faith in a higher being can ease the pain of passing for their loved ones. My mom's passing was eased for us by her belief that she had had a wonderful, enriching lfe and that it was simply her time to go. She retained her spiritual strength and dignity to the very end. This helped us to view her death as the very zenith of her life rather than the depths of depression. Her wake service was truly a celebration of a remarkable life rather than a depressing event.

I don't think I ever met Herb IRL, but you can tell a lot about a person by the number (and type) of friends they keep. It's obvious that Herb is one terrific guy.
Not sure if he was here other times, but the only home game I recall was the 2004 Packers one where we blew them out. His NovaCare visit was a few days before that game...

A post yesterday from Trauma:
QuoteFor what it's worth, he is not suffering. Jess & I just got off the phone and he is comfortable.
Warrior Herb!
I just got off the phone with Herb. His attitude and his strength are unbelievable. He told me to "live a good life" and to value my family above all else... but in the same breath, he said he considers us who have been for him to give him a laugh on the message boards his family. I told him that I am undeserving to be considered as such, but thanked him profusely.
He is going to be around every last second God gives him. He is not going to give up. Amazing.
P.S. Eaglez (if you're around): Herb wanted me to tell you specifically that he felt so bad after the Carolina game that he "got you squared away" and had his mom add your name to his quilt.
Any word on Herb?
Last I read, the family was overwhelmed with all the calls and wanted a day off yesterday to relax and be together. FWIW, he beat the "5 days" as we expected... :)
Herb Osterhaut 11/12/73 - 2/2/06 (http://boards.philadelphiaeagles.com/index.php?showtopic=320441&view=findpost&p=5586402)
R.I.P. :'(
RIP Herb. :(
Sucks. Farg the groundhog. I know Herb will get the big guy to hook us up with an early spring.
Rest in peace.
I'm glad that his suffering is over and he and his family can reach peace and closure.
Sucks to see a nice guy die so young.
RIP
Your indominable spirit touched so many of us over the years and in the truest sense of the word, you were and remain an Eagles fan of the highest caliber and more importantly a human being of the highest order.
God bless Herbert Lee Osterhout (11/12/73 - 02/02/06) & family.
:'(
I'm glad his fight was a symbol of strength for so many people. I'm equally glad that the undoubtedly painful struggle is over. Sounds like he lived it up and was happy while alive. That's all you can ask for.
Such a shame to see him go. I feel bad for his wife, kids and other family. But they should also be proud to have been the husband, father and family member of such a good man. Despite the grim news that his battle was ending, it didn't fully hit me until today.
God Bless the Osterhaut family.
:(
God bless, RIP Herb

Nice words, sir.
Step 1 of the mission is over. Step 2 is about to begin. Herb will have a seat on the board of Football Gods. He'll know what to do.
RIP Herb...didn't know you...but you died hard. Your family and friends should always be proud of the fact they shared life with you.
See you on the other side. Go Eagles!
Wow, thats awful.
Never even met him but I feel terrible.
RIP Herb.
If you're around a radio tomorrow during the noon hour, tune into WMGk 102.9 to hear a special tribute to Herb. I gathered some short paragraphs from posters that knew him best but thought jerome99rip was the best. Not all of it will be read but pieces of it will. 'Fly Like an Eagle' will be played for Herb as well. Here's rome's touching paragraph:
QuoteHerb Osterhout. Eaglesfan73. Both names are one in the same person. Herb Osterhout was many things. First and foremost, he was a devout Christian, he was a soldier having served with distinction in the U.S. Army, he was a devoted and loving husband and father... but to many of us, he was a simply a fan of a football team called the Philadelphia Eagles.
In fact, that's where many of us first came into contact with Herb.
You see, for the past several years or so, Herb was a member of a close-knit circle of fans who frequent an internet bulletin board known as the Philadelphia Eagles Message Board.
During much of that time, Herb also waged a valiant battle with cancer. Through the years, Herb amazed all of us with his strength of will, his unwavering dedication to fight the insidious disease that wracked his body, but most of all, he amazed us with his never-say-die spirit. That battle ended quietly and peacefully this morning.
Some people might think it trivial that Herb was a fan of a professional football team, and that so many of his friends would share that same passion. Herb certainly wouldn't be one of them. To him, being a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles was a way of life.
We mourn Herb's loss today for our own selfish reasons. We'll miss his kindness, we'll miss his sense of humor, and we'll miss sharing in the ups and downs that come as a result of sharing a passion for a professional football team. But most of all, we'll miss the man that he was.
Godspeed, Herb. May the Lord take you in his tender embrace and comfort those of us who'll miss you until we meet again.

I know most of you angry people don't care, but hard to believe it's been 5 years already since Herb passed
Damn, doesn't seem like it was that long ago.
He was nice to me but not nice enough to take money out of my alcohol fund and send it to his wife's alcohol fund.
ive heard the name a million times but who was he again?
was he spadaro before spadaro?
I may be mistaken but I think he was just a genial and extremely devoted EMB regular who gained some profile within the online community which was then inflated when he got sick and died.
i always thought he worked for the eagles
theres gotta be easier ways to up your rep on the EMB
I'm sure he would have preferred life + anonymity over death + semi-Eagle fandom fame.
Helluva guy.
I can't believe its been 5yrs already.

Herb--you had a horrible first name but you are still very missed.
I have no idea who you are.
yo herb take it from the top...
Good idea, because the bottom up dispensers don't work.

Thought about that last week, BigEd...lost my dad 2-1-05, then Herb passed 2-2-06 :'(
Who the farg are you?
Most of the times I see this thread my first thought is always..".this thread got bumped because Herb finally died"
followed quickly by, "but he's already dead, right? Right?"
and sometimes by "Herb came back from the dead."
...moving along now

The look of disgust on the Panther "fans" sitting behind him whilst gyrating was worth the price of admission. Along with seeing an Eagles win.
shut up, Munson...are you out of your teens, yet, punk?
What's really funny is the latenight crew on the old EMB (myself, Phreak, rs) used to farg with munson for being such a douche, this was around 2002. 9 years later and nothing has changed except now he has a new following.
<---not surprised

He was also at the game of legend. Charlotte 2003.

probably a smart move if thats the case
If you have room, I'm in for your FFL here. LMK, Phreak.
icegrillin, I've done a few games w Feva but I haven't been to New Orleans in over 10 yrs.
Munson, glad it sucks at 23...that means at 33 it will be downright miserable for you, and that makes me feel happy inside.
Maybe we can actually get a FF league going this year....
:-D Where you at now? North of 40?
not yet, farger
Did he die again?
Yes. From reading the last couple of pages.
Further proof that death can be merciful.
Stop saying FF! I'm FF! What you're looking for is FFL! Exclamation points!
Fast Freddie League?
NOT IN.

exactly, some of us pole dance in the stands and some of us drink till they vomit and yet somehow drag themselves into the game.
