Title: Deadwood this week.
Post by: Zanshin on April 29, 2004, 09:31:56 AM
I missed Deadwood this week.  Anyone feel like giving me the Cliff Notes version?

If you can watch Deadwood already you probably have the ability to get it On Demand.  If you don't know how that works just post back.  anyway...

Bullock is riding out to kill the guy who killed Wild Bill when he gets attacked by and indian.  He kills him.  Small Pox has broken out in Deadwood and Al, the dude who owns Bella Union, the doc, and some others address it.  Charlie Udder finds Bullock in the woods where he finds out Bill is dead.  Also Tricksy is still helping the widow though Al is suspicious she isn't giving her the dope.  I left out a lot of details so check out On Demand.  Needless to say this episode rocked too, just in a more low-key way.

They replay it like 3 times a week on HBO even if u dont have on demand.  Usually on late nite like 11pm or so.  Check hbo.com.  It was another good episode.

Thanks.  My kid has been a screaming maniac this week (acid reflux, they say), so my TV time has dwindled from slim to nothing.  I was hoping to catch it last night, but the screaming got in the way.

If you have comcast and you have HBO On Demand is free i think.

Nah, don't have on demand.  I have U.S. Cable in No. NJ, which I have as an alternative to CableVision...mostly because CableVision is evil. But U.S. Cable doesn't offer On Demand.  Besides, even if I had it...the prospects of being able to watch an actual hour of TV this week don't look very promising.

here is the synopsis on episode 6 from that site.

QuoteEpisode 06
"Plague"

"Treat the hoople-heads free, that's cheap good will."

Directed by: Davis Guggenheim
Written by: Malcolm MacRury

Synopsis
On the trail of the murderer Jack McCall, Seth Bullock is ambushed. Though he manages to kill the Indian who attacked him, Bullock is beaten and bloodied and soon collapses.

Back in Deadwood, a john falls ill at the Gem, showing the same symptoms that felled Andy Cramed. Worse news follows when Joey, Tolliver's messenger, arrives back at the Bella Union without having made Nebraska. He, too, is becoming ill and was not able to bring back the smallpox vaccine. Doc Cochran tells Swearengen about the outbreak, but the news is kept quiet for the time being.

Smallpox is not the only thing on Swearengen's mind; he is still determined to steal Alma Garrett's gold claim. He sends Farnum to spy on the widow to find out if Trixie has succeeded in re-addicting her to dope, but Farnum reports back to Al that she's not high. Al confronts Trixie and makes it clear that she is to dope the widow--or else.

Knowing that Swearengen means business, Trixie tells Alma to fake intoxication whenever Farnum shows up. Alma understands, playing the part perfectly, and Al is immensely pleased when he gets the report.

Calamity Jane returns to Deadwood, and heads to Cochran's office to get an update on the Metz girl. The doctor doesn't want to deal with Jane, but is surprised when she tells him that she knows about the smallpox. Jane explains that she's been caring for Cramed, and Cochran realizes she may be immune to the disease.

Despite the growing number of smallpox cases, it's business as usual at the Bella Union, where Ellsworth is spending a lot of time at the craps table. Tension grows between Tolliver and Joanie Stubbs, and when she shows a soft spot for Ellsworth, the boss makes it clear that she needs to improve her work in the Union-or he'll give her a reason to be morose.

Outside of Deadwood, Charlie Utter finds Bullock, still unconscious from the attack. Charlie cleans him up, and when Seth comes around, he tells Utter about Hickok's death. Utter is eager to make his way back into town, but Bullock presses him to carry the corpse of the Indian to a proper resting place in a show of respect.

Realizing the growing smallpox threat, a small group of Deadwood's town leaders meet at the Gem. It is decided that they will put together money to pay for riders to get the smallpox vaccine. They also decide to set up a tent for those afflicted.

In his newspaper, Merrick-with heavy editorial influence from Swearengen--tries to minimize the fears that will no doubt arise when the rest of the town learns of the outbreak. The tent is erected for the sick, staffed by Cochran, Reverend Smith and Calamity Jane.

I didn't realize how realize how accurate Deadwood was to real history.  Check out this site.  I would only look at the pics though.  WARNING: If you start reading the character bios i think it will give away future plots and ruin the show. I started to read but stopped myself when i realized.   http://www.adamsmuseumandhouse.org/characters_people.html (http://www.adamsmuseumandhouse.org/characters_people.html)

I had heard that it was really close to the actual true stories. When Wild Bill was killed off, I heard about it on the radio the next day. The radio hosts were complaining about it and the show's producer came on to say that it was real stuff, they had to kill him off. lol

Yeah.  I started reading about Bullock on that site and it mentioned that Wild Bill was killed just days after Bullock came to Deadwood.  Just like the show.

I did a little checking on it, and there is quite a bit of truth to the stories.  One of the most intersting things I learned was that Deadwood was an illegal settlement on Indian-granted land.  And the government kept sending soldiers to remove the settlement-- but they gave up, because so many soldiers sent would disappear and become part of the gold-prospecting Deadwood community.

And, not to ruin any future plotlines, but Bullock became the first lawman of the area.

Last night was pretty good.. they beat the hell out of those kids though before shooting them.. The smallpox problem seems to be done with now with the vaccine..  I think they are overplaying the stupid gold claim though I think its gonna bring conflict between Swearanger and Bullock

Yeah it does.  Sopranos finally had a good episode this week after about 4 stinkers in a row.  the shtein is a bout to hit the fan...next episode should be sweet.
The movie they are showing in place of Sopranos and Deadwood next week actually looks pretty good.

I can't believe how many of you actually like this show. I saw last week's episode on Saturday. There was nothing else on, so I figured I'd give it a try. I was so happy when it was finally over. I don't think I could have found something worse to watch if I tried.

You would probably like it more if you watched it from the beginning instead of jumping in on Episode 10.  It's the best show on TV right now.

You know, I think it's the sort of thing that would be tough to come into the middle of.  I don't think I'd like it nearly as much without the context from the previous episodes.

Well I counted the number of corksuckers and fargs, er, ed, ect..this week and heres the results:

farg or other uses of the word = 82

corksucker = 7

The last rant by al at the end made up about half of the fargs marked.
You gotta love this show!  Next week is gonna be awesome.  The reverend has got some major issues and that scene with him looking at the bulls cocks and talking about circumcison was hilarious.

Heres the info on the finale:

QuoteThe bawdy, vulgar Western wraps up a terrific first season of killin', cussin' and courtesans.

While not for all tastes, David Milch's creation should get credit for revitalizing a genre mostly left for dead. The series struck it rich when a second year was ordered before the first episode was two weeks old. It just goes to show you that you really can teach an old dog new tricks.

In the finale, the arrival of a U.S. Army general (Peter Coyote) brings out the best---and worst---of Deadwood, and Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and Alma (Molly Parker) have a rendezvous.

;D ;D

I watched most of it.  I really liked the first season or two of that show but it has been just OK lately.  The first episode on last nite wasn't that good IMO, but if you have been keeping up with the story it does have some moments.

His real name is Sasha Cohen, he's a jewish guy from england. He somehow gets interviews with real top level guys and asks them the dumbest questions. Ali G is a wangster, and he just makes a total fool of himself. He also plays Borat, some middle eastern guy pretending to be doing a public access show for his home country. And finally hes also a gay German dude prenteding to be a fashion expert, etc.

Coupling had a quirkyness to it from episode one, so scenes that would kill regular sitcoms are par for the course here.  If it was any more unusual it would have to be animated.

Ian McShane aka Al Swearengen: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0574534/ (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0574534/)

- Hes British
- His dad was on Man U
- He's 62

Not a real well known actor over here, but he's fantastic in the role. I doubt he'll win, but he should get a nomination.

The writing was brilliant, and the cast was good.  Then it came to NBC and the cast killed it.  It was just embarrasing and probably hurt the british one in terms of gaining more viewers.

I don't even know if it is still going, new shows or not?  Do you know coach?

The answer to my question:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/coupling/episodes/s4ep2_video.shtml (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/coupling/episodes/s4ep2_video.shtml)

MDS watch that clip of an upcoming show this fall, it is kind of lame but shows you how different the show is.  Basically the guy who is getting executed is a guy who is actually having a nightmare, and the reason he is having a nightmare is because his girlfriend (the blond) is pregnant, so he thinks his life is over.

Not bad stuff, NB. I used to watch Friends, but when Monica and Chandler got married or engaged or whatever--that was it. They had nothing left and the show was done.

I've seen some parts of it on WHYY at 1130 on friday nights or whenever its on. I also wanna check out The Office, which got all sorts of emmy nominations, but I dont know how many people have seen it.

I never watched the Office either, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Coupling has this one episode called "Split" where they have a split screen, with the 3 guys on the left, and the 3 girls on the right and they keep both screens up to the last second.  Basically one of the guys and one of the girls had been dating, got in a fight and broke up and it pokes fun of how differently guys and girls handle those situations.  Of course the guys go to a strip club and get hammered, and the girls go get pampered at a local health spa.  It's funny and ends up with the guy passed out, while the girl comes in and starts to give him a BJ, not knowing the other 2 friends are in the room.

Just some crazy stuff, funny stuff.  I'll stop now.

Or the main whore at Cy's, the blonde, Joanie.

Well actually I thought Calamity Jane had something going for her too.   :o

Carnivale is hard to explain...it was a traveling carnivale, take place during the depression era I believe.  It has alot of references to god and satan, with the main character has the ability to heal people, but has to take life to give life, if u will.
The other main character is a priest, who when faced with a dramatic situation has the ability to cause pain or death to people.  Hes freakin evil.  Its two diff stories and the two main characters are eventually going to meet and all hell will break lose.  I can't wait for it to start.

It was a good opening episode tonight.  I didnt think they would fight so quickly. Its good Joanie got her place because looks like she has some good working girls.  Sy was showing a little manic depressive side.  Good begining. :yay

Post by: Zanshin on March 07, 2005, 08:43:19 AM
I liked it, but the fight scene was a little on the ridiculous side.  Al's a little long in the tooth to be mixing it up like that and tumbling off of buildings without being much worse for wear.

was it just me or did last night's episode look different?  i don't know if it was the lighting or what. ???

I thought it was a great episode.  Wow I was surprised with the fight, it was pretty intense.  Bullock not only cheats on his wife, then he falls off the balcony and gets farged up.  Talk about a zesty day.
I was laughing quite a bit, I think the humor is great.  My personal favorite was Calamity Jane waking up on her horse as the buggy went by and yelled out, "corksuckers!" all drunk and hungover--instant classic.   :-D :-D

I can't wait for next weeks episode.  farg!

You are correct. I'm not sure if they are legally married, but Bullock introduces them as his wife and son, but in conversation, it's mentioned that he's taken responsibility for his brother's family.

Yea I was a bit confused on that myself.  Which now makes sense, especially since next episode, Bullock seems to want to get the hell out of DeadWood with the rich bitch.  My guess is that she ends up dead at some point of this season.
Title: Re: Deadwood this week.
Post by: Zanshin on March 08, 2005, 08:59:40 AM
Yep.  Had mentioned that last season, too.  I know that the majority of the character history is accurate (including the Bullock family stuff), but it also reminded me a bit of the Earp situation in Tombstone.

Last nights episode was weak.  Bullock got his gun and hat back, thats about it.  Although the part where the hookers got her thumb up Al's butt was pretty damn funny.  :-D

The cryptic language is getting tough to follow completely, for me at least.  Also, I noticed that there were probably a dozen eff-bombs in the first three minutes of the show.

I'm with you -- for such a great show last year, I would hate for it to suck this season.

I thought lastnights episode was good, though the dialogue is getting a bit tough.

I pretty much thought that when I watched the very first episode a while back. I took it as typical of how people spoke around their points rather than being totally direct. That's part of the charm - it actually takes some mental effort to get everything out of it. But I agree...last night was particuarly tough to listen to casually.

That's what I had heard before.  The other thing I noticed last night was the dialogue about finding Reverand Smith, killed by Indians.  We all know that Al did a mercy-killing on the Rev, but I guess they added that in last night's episode to be historically correct.  Rev Smith was found by the side of a road with a bullet through his heart -- and no one ever knew how he died.

Thoughts on Episode 3?  I was cringing and twitching during the Doc/Al "insertion" scene.  That was just brutal...

So far, for the season, I have to give this about a 5 or 6 out of 10.  Last season was a 9.5 or higher, but this season seems to be taking too long to set-up.

By the way -- Deadwood trivia:   Mr. W. is played by Garret Dillahunt, the same actor who played Jack McCall in season 1.

I thought lasts night episode was awesome.   The tension and dialog were top notch IMO.  Seeing EB turn from bully to a puddle of piss in a minute of dialog with Mr. W was great.   The Joanie/Mr W brothel scene was great too.   Im glad to see some character development finally from people like Alma Garrett, Trixie, Calamity Jane, and Joanie.  I think the show is only going to be carried as far as some of these female characters can take it.   They have already played a lot of the typical male stuff out of the box last year.
Title: Re: Deadwood this week.
Post by: Father Demon on March 21, 2005, 02:05:10 PM
I also liked watching EB melt in front of Mr. W, and was really hoping to see some Joanie b00bage...   but, I still feel like the series is crawling along.  Maybe I was spoiled by last season's constant action and bravado....

I can see this year building as Al gets better and has to battle all of this claim stuff. Mr. W's going to get his along with some others once Al's feeling like his old randy self again. Things are getting back to normal in this episode and that's good for the story line.

Best episode of the season by far. Maybe Milch has a trick up his sleeve with Mr. W and Jack McCall. I would lean towards that, but W has so far not even mentioned Bullock. That would be the only reason he would return to camp, to seek revenge.
