Good Riddance!! Rat infested POS stadium!!
That rat infested POS stadium holds some of the greatest times of my entire childhood and after. I spent half my life there, it feels like. >:( I feel like you just talked bad about my mom.
The last Eagles game I went to there was a 10-7 win vs the Rams in 2002 and technically the last Phillies game I went to was a win vs the Padres. Although I didn't actually see that game. It was the second game of a double header. The Phils lost the first game, but the second game started before I left the stadium so I'm counting that game instead of the first.
RIP Section 628, rows 1 and 2, seats 1-5. :'(
That's not the way I wanted to remember the Vet. It's like seeing an old friend who's been in a really bad car accident. :-\
Maybe those pics and some other really cool ones from that fans can be posted in a eulogy of the Vet by FS'64. :D
Wow. Just wow. An era has ended in Philadelphia. :'(
:o :'(
i wonder if they are still getting paid by those sponsers for the signs being up. ;)
Thanks for the pics, but now I have that damn song stuck in my head... >:(

Sad :'(
But the good news is, it looks like the Phils have finally sold the remainder of the seats that were for sale.
Huh...that was a bit more affecting than I thought it would be.
I think one of those pics was showing a little of Michael Irvin's brain tissue stuck in the concrete!
Seriously, as much a the Linc rules, I will miss the Vet because it is where first saw my beloved Eagles live and in person at the age of 20. I took my uncle (FS'64) and his friend to a preseason game in 1988 against the Jets (tickets in the 700 level were $20). Since then the Vet has held so many memories for me. Sure it sucked as a facility, but it is where the tough as nails Eagle fans tortured opposing teams (an often the Eagles). Somehow I always got some perverse pride from the 700 level and our turf everyone was a fraid of.
Bye Bye Buddy, Bye Bye Big Clyde, Bye Bye 4th & 1 (twice!), Bye Bye Wes & Andre!
EG
(At least we now have 4th & 26).
Looks like nobody wanted the gigantic out-of-warranty Phanavisions... ;D

Believe me, i spent plenty of time in that place. I can't say i miss it. I think towards the future and the christening of Cit Bank Park with a World Championship for the Philles this fall. And next season, the Eagles rolling thru to the Super Bowl at the Linc.
I have my share of memories from the Vet...but i'm not losing any sleep over it's impending death.

Hope you got something nice from The Devil in exchange for your soul. ;)
I can distinctly remember watching them build that place..I always envisioned it being built by circus clowns, due to the odd angles of those blessed ramps :o Whats really sad is that I remember what was on that site before the Vet. A bowling alley which was right across the street for the infamous Aquarama that was there, now theres a blast from the past. From where I lived I watch it go up piece by piece, Dad used to take me down to watch them build it, and then when it was finally opened I couldn't resist the lure of going to a Phils game and finding some adult to pretend we were with them in order to get the 50 cent 700 level tickets for 14 and under ;D
On a side note , this is really weird..lets see Connie Mack Stadium, Franklin Field, The Vet, and now the Linc...hmmmm back is starting to hurt some now :D

Yeah, maybe Dio will come back. ;D
I attended the inaugural Phillies game at the Vet with my Dad in 1971 & the 2nd-to-last Phillies game with my daughter in 2003. In between those two dates, I saw hundreds of Phillies games, countless Eagles games, and several concerts. At one time, we all thought the Vet was the most beautiful stadium in the world. Sadly, it became run-down & shabby towards the end. Although jack-off Jeff Lurie once proclaimed the place a "dump" it was still our dump, and I, for one, am gonna miss seeing it when I drive westbound over the Walt Whitman Bridge from Jersey.
RIP, old friend. :'(

:'( Have plenty of good EAGLES memories in that building.
My favorite was crackhead M Irvin getting his skull planted and Sanders doing that ritual dance in the endzone. lol
Goodbye dear friend. I'll never forget the good times. :'(
Great pics! I had a very hard time watching Eagles games this year on TV. I kept expecting to see the Vet and that ugly turf. It was so weird watching the Packer playoff game. I kept thinking it was in Green Bay - grass, football only statdium, fans close to the field........
As sick as it sounds I actually spent part of my honeymoon at the Vet. I am not that sick - we actually were in NYC and talked my wife into going down for the weekend to see the Packers/Birds back in Sept of 94 - "The Throwback" game. Remember those horrible looking uniforms? It was a great game the birds pulled out 13-7. I am so glad I got to see Favre Plus it was Reggie Whites return to Philadelphia.
I live in Hawaii and was born in Philadelphia. My family is from Hawaii but my father was transferred to NJ. I popped up in Gladwyne, PA. We moved back here when I was a year old. I've bled Eagles, Sixers, Philles and Flyers ever since. During our visit to Philadelphia we couldn't have found people to be any nicer. After a week in NYC, Philadelphia was like Mayberry. Great city, people, food.... I really do get pissed when the press any other yahoos bash Philly. I have nothing but good memories of the city. I can't wait to take my son to a game at the Linc.
I agree, let's set up a site where we can post our memories and personal; pictures of the Vet.

Don, you have to spring for Direct TV and get the NFL channel. I have it and I don't know how I survived 52 years of football without it. ;)
i'm torn...
for every good memory, there's a bad one.
for every game 6 win vs the Braves in the 1993 NLCS, there's a 21-7 loss to the rams in the playoffs.
for every world series win, there's a super bowl loss.
i have a lot of fond memories of the vet. but i will not miss it. in the same way i don't miss my 1st apartment after college. sure, it was great while i was there...but no way in hell you'd get me back there ;)

Having said that, I cannot wait to experience the Linc!!
I was there when the Ealges beat the Cowboys in the playoffs in 1980. I was there the day the Phillies clinched the NL east in 1980. I saw Kite man, i caught a home run hit by Willie Stargell, I saw Carlton, Bunning, Bergey Charmichael, Montgonery, Reggie, Bowa and thousands of others play there...
...and despite all that I say, "Good riddance"
:spank

But Franklin Field lives on! And who would have guessed, back in 1971, that Franklin Field would outlast the Vet?
I was at the first football game at the Vet, preseason of 1971 vs. Buffalo, along with FS61 and our dad. My enduring memory is of getting a good, long look at the outside of the stadium afterward because the traffic jam in the parking lot was beyond comprehension - didn't think we'd ever get out!

Yup, the new Phillies stadium opens up in a few months. :)
Read all about it (http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/phi/ballpark/phi_ballpark_2004ballpark.jsp)
Very nice! I'm taking a look at all of the C.G. pictures and sky photos as we speak. Ok so the complex layout is Ballpark, down from that is the Vet, next to that is the arena, and then the Linc. Is this description correct? link (http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/phi/images/y2004_ballpark/aerial/ph_december_southwest_353x360.jpg) That's the picture I'm talking about. How do you Phillies fans feel about playing in a ball park now instead of a football stadium?
Can't wait.
Now we have the Spectrum, Wachovia Center, The Linc and Citizens Bank Park over there. And the Vet, which is going down.
It should be nice to play baseball on grass instead of turf and have a stadium layout that is more baseball friendly. I hope they build some sort of complex on the site of the Vet instead of just laying down a parking lot.
The plan (or what they've talked about publicly) is to have parking, but to also build some kind of fan-friendly area. Something along the lines of what you see in Baltimore along Eutaw Street.

How the people watched with wonder,
how they laughed and how they cheered
Yes, there used to be a ball park....

Yes, there used to be a ball park...

Now the children try to find it,
and they can't believe their eyes
For the old team isn't playing,

Speaking strictly for myself I find it most strange and somewhat sad that ballparks built in my lifetime (The Vet, Three Rivers Stadium, Riverfront Stadium, The Kingdome, et al) were not only deemed obsolete but razed to the ground.
Are any of these new stadia (or is it stadii???) ever going to have the legendary charm of a Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field, or Fenway Park?
My God, I simply can't believe tha Shea Stadium is on of the oldest ballparks around!
I'm surprised that they left the bell up there even during the start of deconstruction. You'd think that'd be one of the first things to be taken out of there after the seats.

I'm making the Soul game as part of the reason to drive 2 hours (and stay overnight) to see this. :)
For some reason, it looks like the north side of Packer (kind of under I-76) will be closer to the action than I-95. At least until the cops chase everybody away.
Actually, I'm finding it hard to understand that there will be THAT many cops in the area to enforce a perimiter that large.

QuotePrecautions being made for big bang
By JIM NOLAN and PAUL VIGNA

It's going to sound like Fireworks Night.
It's going to feel like the Broad Street subway rumbling underfoot.
And then, in 62 seconds, Veterans Stadium will be gone - 33 years of memories reduced to a 50-foot-high pile of rubble at Broad and Pattison.
That's the forecast of officials charged with bringing down the South Philly landmark on Sunday at 7 a.m.
Officials say most parts of the stadium that could create a dust problem - such as dry wall and masonry wall - have been removed.
They said the blast is designed to cause the overwhelming majority of the concrete shell to fall within the building's footprint.
"We're rotating the stadium onto the playing field instead of telescoping it as in a conventional implosion," said Jeff Sizemore, of Demolition Dynamics, of Franklin, Tenn.
The wild card is the weather - expected to be windy and in the 40s, with gusts in excess of 30 mph.
To guard against airborne debris, officials say they have greatly expanded the normal 400-foot blast zone dust buffer.
Before 7 a.m., police will close sections of I-95, I-76, Broad Street and the Walt Whitman Bridge. The closures will last for up to 30 minutes. In addition, a 35-by-450-foot blast curtain will run behind Geary Street, the closest residential area located on northeast side of the stadium.
"We're just being conservative in nature," Sizemore said. "We don't want to take any chances."
A warning siren will sound 10 minutes, 2 minutes and a minute before the countdown to the implosion begins. Phillies officials hinted yesterday that a celebrity will be on hand to help push the blast button.
Following the implosion, an all-clear siren will be sounded when the area is deemed safe. Officials will monitor air quality to determine when they can reopen areas around the site.
Residents close by who aren't being evacuated have been asked to remain in their homes with windows closed during the event.
Officials expect the area to be open in time for events scheduled at the sports complex Sunday. The doors will open at 11 a.m. for a noon Soul game at the Wachovia Center, and the Eagles will hold cheerleader tryouts in the East Club Lounge of Lincoln Financial Field at 4:30 p.m
QuotePhillies officials hinted yesterday that a celebrity will be on hand to help push the blast button.
Guesses anyone?
Mike Schmidt? Steve Carlton? Harry Kalas perhaps. Maybe Tim McGraw. Eh, it'll probably end up being someone gay like Bob Saget or Pat Sajak.

My guess on the "celebrity": Ed Rendell. That would be fittingly stupid.

Good Riddance to the Vet!! Finally!! There will be memories...but i'm not the least bit sad to see it crumble. Hell, i'm sure you could ask all the players in the NFL and they'd rather play on the parking lot that will be there than the field that was there.
By the way, the Phillies consider the Phanatic to be a celebrity, so WIP is probably correct.
I bet Dutch Daulton is the celebrity though.

Two favorite memories include one from over two decades ago.
A co-worker of mine at a liquor store that I worked at in California was from Del.Co. It was October of 1980 and the WS was happening.Gary was so jazzed about the Phillies actually being in it and then to have them win, he just went nuts.I don't think I've ever seen any ex-pat go so crazy over his team winning a championship as I did with him.
Second favorite memory was the 2000 playoff victory over the Bucs. I brought my wife to the game, her first football game ever. I helped us to bond with our newly adopted city.

I couldnt cheer when I watched that.
Just thinking about all the baseball and football that I watched sitting somewhere in that stadium. :'(
I saw it at work this morning during our morning show here in Atlanta. The producer told me he put it in his show just for me.... :'( :'( :'(
I thought this was a fitting quote for the Vet and :CF from the article on ESPN;
"John Middleton, 20, was one of many fans gathered to pay last respects to the stadium. "It's amazing how emotional you can get about a giant slab of concrete," he said."
Just drove by the rubble on I-95. What a strange and sad sight. :( :( :(
I was there and it was the roughest things I have ever watched. My eyes started welting up, but I held back until this lady saw me and said "nothing but just a memory now" and then I lost it. As crazy as this may sound, the Vet will always have a special place in my heart - I grew up there. I learned to love the Eagles there. When that thing came down, I felt a part of me die with it.

Wow, caught it on ESPN, this really sucks, it was always there everytime I flew back home :'( :'( :'( I can't remember all the differen't seats I sat in at the Vet, but I will say one thing. At any other stadium I went/go to we always looked/look for a better seat in the lower levels to move down to late in the game, but not at the VET. I loved the 700 level. A quick story, I took my wife to a game there, man I think it was preseason 1995 against the falcons, we were up in the 700 level, and these college kids had on Deon Sanders jerseys. he ran a kickoff back and they were hooting and hollering jumping up and down, the EAGLES then came right back and scored, athese three or four older guys in their 40's and a little bit over served ;) came down and just lit into them, ended up in a fight with them and it was just a mess. Anyway thats the only football memory my wife has of the old girl. Her quote was "man it's only preseason, what would they have done to them if it was during the season". All I said was "exactly". Man I loved that stadium.
Thanks for the pics everyone, they are great!!

YOu know what? I know you're a good guy, I know you've been around for a long time on this board, but seriously? STFU. You've never lived 4 minutes away from the stadium where everytime you went anywhere, you passed it. I caught a snippet of Ray Didinger talking on WIP this morning. Angelo asked him if the special feeling of moving into a markedly improved facility that Didinger had when the Vet first opened in 1971 also applied to the recent move into the Linc. Didinger said no, because he didn't feel that it was as dramatic an improvement as going from Connie Mack/ Franklin Field was to going to the Vet. I think that Angelo was trying to get him to say it was because the Vet belonged to all of the people of Philadelphia versus the Linc which is somewhat a more exclusive environment.
The Vet, as tarnished and abused as it was, reflected and belonged to the citizenry of Philadelphia.

Very well said! I may not live in Philadelphia but I have always felt a bond with the Vet. I was lucky enough to attend two Eagles games and one Phillie game. I was a guest of former Phillie pitcher Larry Christenson who is a family friend on two occassions. It was great. We were able to go behind the scenes and see the "inner" Vet. I'll never forget the excitement I felt when the cab pulled up to the Vet. Seeing all my fellow Eagle fans filing into the stadium made me feel like I was at Mecca. I really had a hard time this year watching games on TV at Lincoln Financial. Seeing the birds on grass at home was a trip. I kept asking myself "Where's the Vet? Is this a road game?" Such a shame the Eagles couldn't have closed that thing down with an NFC Championship victory.
Driving past what used to be the Vet today was just weird. It's like not there..So many memories just a pile of rubble.
Went to the Sixers game tonight and it was just plain eerie down there. I hated it. :'(

I had some awesome memories at the Vet.
October 1998 - Eagles vs. Cowboys 13-10 win, Michael Irvin was flattened by Timmy Hauck, his career was over, and YES I did cheer damnit. It's hard not to when you are in the last row of the 600 level and a walkway behind you thousands of 700 level faithful are going absolutely nuts.
Home Opener, Eagles v. Cowboys 2002 - Sheldon Brown with an awesome hit, Eagles win in a laugher.
Mofo Tailgate the same year vs. the Rams - 10-7 win, awesome defensive battle.
Mind you the Eagles never lost when I attended a game ;D
And a few obscure Phillies games, just some random ones with general admin tickets were, I believe, 7.50 or 10 bucks, how could you not go?
Most memorable Phillies moment, uhh, when Nelson Figueroa had that awesome game? That's one of the best Phillies moments I remember on a game that I attended :-[ Sad huh?

i would have to say they are very hard to obtain on game days. Sure you could always try to get a scalped ticket, but you could get burned with a counterfeit ticket... and at best you would be paying a lot more for a ticket than you should. If i were you i would try to get a ticket for a game asap however you can. Thats just my thoughts, maybe someone else has a different experience that could be more helpful with the ticket situation.

Morning Bytes | At the Vet, trouble in the rubble
By Frank Fitzpatrick
Inquirer Columnist
Though officials did their best to clean out Veterans Stadium before Sunday's spectacular implosion, they apparently left much behind. Here are some of the items contractors have located amid the rubble:
Buddy Ryan's offensive playbook, all three pages remarkably intact.
The tractor-trailer in which Curt Schilling stored his ego between starts. This large container has added historical significance as well, since it also transported Dallas Green's larynx from city to city.
The barrel of rice with which Steve Carlton used to perform his esoteric arm exercises, along with a pot of green tea, an egg roll, and some moo goo gai pan.
Seven Temple football fans, thereby establishing a new Owls attendance record at the Vet.
Mike Schmidt's emotional cocoon.
Randall Cunningham's space suit.
The mirrors Dave Hollins cracked.
Travis Lee's can of oil.
A ticket to the Eagles' 700 Level Fans Annual Fund-Raising Brawl.
Sixteen dead cats - though their deteriorated condition was such that some believe the remains may actually be Howard Eskin's fur coat.
Three unidentified patella tendons.
Vince Fumo's private box, complete with collection plate.
A set of "Joe Must Go" glasses, left over from Franklin Field days, which Tim Rossovich planned to consume for lunch the day his Eagles career ended.
The office cot, tear-stained and slightly scorched, on which Dick Vermeil burned out.
The other half of Rich Kotite's wit.
The bat with which a Phillies season-ticket holder once pummeled that moron who incessantly yells, "Everybody hits, wa-hoooo!"
Tapes of several WPEN-AM Phillies broadcasts. Never been heard.
Vet's reputation survives. Here's what the sports-humor Web site www.sportspickle.com had to say about the Vet implosion:
"After the detonations started and the stadium was reduced to rubble in just more than 60 seconds, the crowd began booing the implosion team for its inability to fell the structure in less than a minute. 'Boooooooooooooo,' yelled one obviously intoxicated spectator. 'I could have knocked that stadium down by myself in less than a minute. You suck!'
"Police arrested more than two dozen of the crowd after fans tried to rush the implosion team and beat them with metal pipes."
Nice edit, PG. :yay
Philly.com is now a "sign-up required" site, for anyone who didn't know. It's free, though.

I almost thought they were going to blow it with the "Joe Must Go" reference - stuff like that will be found if they ever tear down Franklin Field, or dig through my memorabilia collection, whichever comes first :P - but any mention of Tim Rossovich is welcome. ;)

Wow...I didn't know it was that thick. My guess is two of the pages were blank. ;)

One page was just a picture of Randall scrambling.

More Vet funnies from espn.com's Jayson Stark:
QuoteFarewell to the Vet
As they watched Veterans Stadium tumble Sunday, several Phillies players revealed they'd collected some assorted Vet memorabilia before the imploders arrived -- mostly the seats that once held their most beloved boobirds.
"I've got four of those seats," said shortstop Jimmy Rollins. "So I told my girlfriend, 'When the movers come, put those seats in the car. Don't let them go in the van.' If somebody can steal the Phanatic's head, they can steal my seats."
Meanwhile, the always-inventive Doug Glanville said he'd struck out in his attempts to obtain the underground courthouse used for rowdies at Eagles games. ("I thought that would be very special, very Philadelphia," he said.) So he was turning his attention to trying to track down the 408 sign on the outfield padding in center field.
"I'm working on finding that," he said. "I'll definitely be making some contact with the FBI and CIA. My plan is to bronze it, have the 408 studded with diamonds and then put it in my driveway. The fact that I could never hit a ball over that sign means it represents the unattainable."
Shockingly, we couldn't find any Phillies players who wanted to keep a strip of NeXturf, even though they'll never have another chance to play a game on it anywhere they roam. If you thought they might feel even a tinge of nostalgia over that, guess again.
"My hip flexors are celebrating in joy," Glanville said. "And my hamstring tendon is really happy, too."
Hey, speaking of Aquarama, I'm looking for info and pictures on the place and the neighborhood in the 1960's.
