Probably a good thing, with the injuries to Berard and Pronger a visible sign of the need.  Sounds like the current players will be grandfathered in, much like when helmets were made mandatory around 1980.

One of the real disappointing things to me about the Flyers collapse was they were just on the verge of developing into one of those classic rivalries. With the pens, the players were getting to the point where they truly hated each other, and the Flyers played like it.
