Stealing signs at second base and flashing signs to the batter is one thing. Using technology is an entirely different level.

There's been cheating in baseball since the 1800s. It's still going on, it always will go on, and as someone once said, if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'.
so cheating shouldnt be policed? or it should and if you get caught you shouldnt face and consequences?

As for the sign stealing...I'm fine with guys trying to pick the catchers signs off while on base and relaying them. That's harmless.
But to have an elaborate scheme like this is out of bounds. It created a distinct advantage. What batter wouldn't want to know when an off speed pitch was coming? Hear that bang and you know you're not getting a fastball. Huge advantage. I'm glad the Astros got walloped.

its tough to punish roid users for using roids when you...could...use...roids. it wasnt against the rules because there were no rules.
what you can say is that dudes like mcgwire and sosa dont put up their hr numbers without them. palmeiro got caught. but to me bonds and clemens are in a different category. they are so good with or without the roids it doesnt matter. im not their parent, im not going to punish them for doing it. bonds' numbers post balco when he couldnt even move were video game numbers. its categorically insane how good he was.

I went to quite a few games at Fenway from 82-86 when I was at University of NH. We'd get in for $5. It was exactly that, a massive shteinhole. I remember going for the first time and walking up to the park from Yawkey (Racist) Way thinking "What's the big farging deal, this looks like a dump!" but once in the park I did feel the history and nostalgia but it really was no big thing. It was defiantly an old, beat up POS.
Looking back it reminded me of an old busted up warehouse in a zesty neighborhood. It was really bad back then. I'm sure it's delightful now.
its still an absolute shteinhole...the degrees to which fenway is better are incalculable

does anyone think this is a bad idea. basing it off a july 1 start
-120/130 games which takes you into december
-playoffs in december, perhaps leaking into january if you add a round
-late season games at ST sites and/or neutral southern parks like miami
-2021 season starts late, likely may, where youd again play a shorter season. probably the 140 area.
not having a close to full baseball season doesnt seem right to me. doing like 80 games or a series of tournaments is just silly. baseball is baseball. 2 shorter seasons isnt ideal but what can you do.
At first I thought you were drunk suggesting playing into winter.
I'm lukewarm on it bc I like seeing the home field advantage and crowds. People will be too broke to travel to follow their teams too.
Ideally they start June 15ish and go through first weekend in October
you can a quasi home crowd in spring training facilities
look its not perfect...this isnt ideal. but id rather not play than do an 70 game season
I think the number of games fell in the 100-110 range during the strike season in 81.

You got it. The Phils played 107.
people would be much better off with the mindset that no sports leagues are happening this year because thats more likely than not
I think the only sport that has a semi reasonable chance of being played this year is NBA in front of no crowds. smaller numbers of players, only need a few tv/radio people to be tested prior. plus they seem to be the poster child for having their shtein together.
you mean thousands of big sweaty men arent going to be wrestling each other to the ground three times a week in four months?
lol. i mean technically baseball is already so boring there are players who could easily not touch anyone or get within 6 feet for an entire season. so i guess they could figure something out too. even though i'd rather watch video games than crowdless baseball.
If we could get mass testing to the point where teams could buy tons of those insta-tests and test their players and employees everyday as they come into work, we could maybe have some crowd-less games of any sport.
But people are still acting like idiots and our govt is so far behind where it needs to be in testing that we probably can't have that.
i just need to live in a headspace where baseball is going to happen even though i know its probably not

-who is the current active leader in career stolen bases
you will never get it
I want to say Dee Gordon but thats too obvious for the way you worded that question. Assuming it's not him makes me very surprised that it's not him. Definitely would have been my answer.
Years of fantasy baseball makes me think it's one of those dudes always floating around on the wire that you pick up when you need steals and they regularly get 15-30 a year for like 10 years. Someone like Brett Gardner or Rajai Davis or Jarrod Dyson. Not sure if Dyson has been around long enough though. Ian Kinsler has been around forever and was stealing a ton of bases for a while. Lorenzo Cain? Idk.
I literally never have great basestealers in fantasy so I'm constantly monitoring the stolen base leaders on the wire Literally the only reason why I know any of those names besides Gardner and Kinsler. Wouldn't be shocked at all if it's Kinsler, considering his longevitiy.

Dear Havas,
We hope you and your loved ones are safe and well.
Thank you for purchasing single game tickets for 2020 July, August or September Phillie games. As you are likely aware, MLB will soon be announcing a new 60 game 2020 schedule. the buffalo bison were in the national league from 79-85 when they folded. the phillies (then the quakers) finished in 3rd in 1885 -- 30 games back of the cubs !
Apparently there are some issues with using Buffalo. (https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1987670)
It still seems to be the favorite to me, but supposedly other possibilities are Dunedin (leading the league in rainouts and heat exhaustion), Rochester and sharing PNC with the Pirates.
Here are more specific objections with Buffalo:

Might as well do this forever, considering the number of fans who actually attend regular season games.
I hate it, just like I hate the FIFA sounds on the Premier League coverage.
Just show things like they actually are. Everyone knows the situation is farged up right now. The game is what happens on the field, not what happens in the stands.

Manfred is horrible. Baseball wonders why they can't grab market share and new fans and it's for dumbshtein moves that make no sense. They dicked around getting started. Could have been the sole game going on for awhile and getting killed ratings. Now? Just one week in the spotlight before NBA and NHL go on.
They didn't do the bubble. They still enforce blackout rules for tv. They don't start games early to get more eyes on games early in the day while people are home.
They're the worst run and most gone deaf of the four majors by far.
Oh and while I'm ranting - someone tell the sabr nerds that bunting during the dumb farging extra innings runner on second rule is smart.
baseball doesnt get new viewers because people generally hate the actual sport not because joe kelly got suspended or the start times of games
baseballs bigger problem is alienating the fans it does have by doing dumb as farg shtein such as the man on second rule in extra innings...farg the bunting issue the rule shouldnt exist in the first place
it crazy to me that it is right in front of their eyes so obvious that they need to make rules that eliminate the shift yet they are inventing circus rules instead
baseball biggest problem is actually over exposure

That's a COVID rule?
Much like the DH rule in the national league, it's for the current season, but we'll see if it hangs around.
So, no. Not related to COVID.
Same for the seven inning double headers, or is that one actually a COVID rule?
Honestly don't think the ghost runner or 7 innings rules will stick. I could see something like the ghost runner becoming permanent years from now, but I think they will go back to the usual extra innings rules in the seasons immediately after the pandemic. The legit gripes about pace and length of the game aren't really about what happens in the <10% of games that go into extra innings.
DH is the one where I feel like enough of MLB wants it bad, for reasons not related to covid. Some NL execs swear no, though.
The whole season feels to me like it lacks legitimacy, like the XFL or some new league that people don't take seriously. No one wants extra innings or long doubleheaders in games that don't really matter, so I think having gimmicky rules to reduce the amount of baseball makes sense this year. Would rather just not have the season at all, but the existence of this season is more about serving the desires of the owners and players than the fans.
Quote from: QB Eagles on July 31, 2020, 11:43:10 AMThe legit gripes about pace and length of the game aren't really about what happens in the <10% of games that go into extra innings.
This is spot on. When I feel a game dragging, it's often well before the ninth inning, nevermind extras.
OT in any sport is always more exciting than regulation play...why would you ever want to shorten that

there is not a single soul defending the move...its just such a straw man argument to dismiss "analytics" because one move in one game one manager made was dumb. roberts managed g5/6 perfectly. the dodgers roster construction was flawless. im sure this all done with a couple of old dudes in the back room smoking cigars and using their guts.

Maybe for some guys you lift them. But when you have your top starters dealing? Or shtein anyone who is throwing a good game...leave them in.
the data for SP's facing hitters a 3rd time is there. you can choose to ignore it or not, but the facts bear out. does that mean that pitchers must *always* come out after facing 18 batters? no.
in this particular case, it was evident snell was dealing. it was stupid to take him out. most of the time its the right and obvious move to make. for this game, didnt take a math whiz to figure out what to do. cash did the wrong thing. his team lost, as it shouldve.
