Haha.  That's ridiculous.   Baseball is cheating.  It's part of the fabric of the game and what makes it mildly entertaining.

Stealing signs at second base and flashing signs to the batter is one thing.  Using technology is an entirely different level.

MLB sent a message.

farg off, Junior.

There's been cheating in baseball since the 1800s.  It's still going on, it always will go on, and as someone once said, if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'.

Boston has shtein canned Alex Cora

As for the sign stealing...I'm fine with guys trying to pick the catchers signs off while on base and relaying them. That's harmless.

But to have an elaborate scheme like this is out of bounds. It created a distinct advantage. What batter wouldn't want to know when an off speed pitch was coming? Hear that bang and you know you're not getting a fastball. Huge advantage. I'm glad the Astros got walloped.

Their organization has been arrogant as shtein. farg em

My astros season ticket rep groveling today for business with apologies was interesting.

not sure how that can be proven but if it can altuve and bregman and all the rest gotta go for a year at least. not sure what the union will allow, regardless it would go to court or an arbiter bla bla bla legal shtein

interesting but not surprising is internally the astros people are all going full blame the victim on fiers. i get it snitches get stitches, im from the street i live round the way i aint say shtein about shtein to nobody. but either something is or it isnt. and why are you even playing this silly little game if you can keep it straight.

Mendoza coming out and blaming Fiers today too was rich. She works for the Mets. It's a total conflict of interest with her dual roles.

its tough to punish roid users for using roids when you...could...use...roids. it wasnt against the rules because there were no rules.

what you can say is that dudes like mcgwire and sosa dont put up their hr numbers without them. palmeiro got caught. but to me bonds and clemens are in a different category. they are so good with or without the roids it doesnt matter. im not their parent, im not going to punish them for doing it. bonds' numbers post balco when he couldnt even move were video game numbers. its categorically insane how good he was.

this would only matter if the league tried to suspend them when they were playing

whats happening now isnt an MLB punishment...the HOF voters are punishing them

still everyone knew it was wrong at the time including the people doing it...otherwise they would have done it out in the open...admitted doing it at the time...instead 99% of them cant even admit now that they did it

same reason the Phillies won't get any players....they want to be below the luxury tax

both teams are fine right now with 80-85 wins...the difference is Boston has more titles in the last 15 years than the Phillies do in the last 140 and will probably be contending again in a couple years where as the Phillies will be mediocre to bad for the next 20...also people will still go to Red Sock games

Now it's a sold-out "cathedral" of baseball 35 years later.

I went to quite a few games at Fenway from 82-86 when I was at University of NH.  We'd get in for $5. It was exactly that, a massive shteinhole.  I remember going for the first time and walking up to the park from Yawkey (Racist) Way thinking "What's the big farging deal, this looks like a dump!" but once in the park I did feel the history and nostalgia but it really was no big thing.  It was defiantly an old, beat up POS.

QuoteCash was part of what is believed to be the first all-black starting lineup (including several Latinos) in Major League history. On September 1, 1971, the Pirates' starting lineup was: Rennie Stennett, 2B; Gene Clines, CF; Roberto Clemente, RF; Willie Stargell, LF; Manny Sanguillén, C; Dave Cash, 3B; Al Oliver, 1B; Jackie Hernández, SS; and Dock Ellis, P.

He was part of a great Phil's infield:

Dick Allen 1b, Cash 2b, Bowa SS, Schmidt at 3b.  Nice staff to with Lefty, Jim Lonborg, Jim Kaat, Larry Christenson, Tom Underwood.  They Won 101 games in 1976.  Lost to Big Red Machine in NLCS.

I digress....

i dont know what they do....by the time they get the go head to get teams back together to warm up, starting pitchers would need time to build their stamina and strength back up. can they do that with a lockdown?

even if you start in early to mid june, thats 2+ months late. do you just run into thanksgiving...shorten the season....move all playoffs to southern climates?

theres no good answers here. but there will be no baseball as april and may hit (or hockey or basketball) and this is just. ugh. im lost.

does anyone think this is a bad idea. basing it off a july 1 start

-120/130 games which takes you into december
-playoffs in december, perhaps leaking into january if you add a round
-late season games at ST sites and/or neutral southern parks like miami
-2021 season starts late, likely may, where youd again play a shorter season. probably the 140 area.

not having a close to full baseball season doesnt seem right to me. doing like 80 games or a series of tournaments is just silly. baseball is baseball. 2 shorter seasons isnt ideal but what can you do.

At first I thought you were drunk suggesting playing into winter.

I'm lukewarm on it bc I like seeing the home field advantage and crowds. People will be too broke to travel to follow their teams too.

Ideally they start June 15ish and go through first weekend in October

I think the only sport that has a semi reasonable chance of being played this year is NBA in front of no crowds.  smaller numbers of players, only need a few tv/radio people to be tested prior. plus they seem to be the poster child for having their shtein together.

lol. i mean technically baseball is already so boring there are players who could easily not touch anyone or get within 6 feet for an entire season. so i guess they could figure something out too. even though i'd rather watch video games than crowdless baseball.

If we could get mass testing to the point where teams could buy tons of those insta-tests and test their players and employees everyday as they come into work, we could maybe have some crowd-less games of any sport.

But people are still acting like idiots and our govt is so far behind where it needs to be in testing that we probably can't have that.

I want to say Dee Gordon but thats too obvious for the way you worded that question. Assuming it's not him makes me very surprised that it's not him. Definitely would have been my answer.

Years of fantasy baseball makes me think it's one of those dudes always floating around on the wire that you pick up when you need steals and they regularly get 15-30 a year for like 10 years. Someone like Brett Gardner or Rajai Davis or Jarrod Dyson. Not sure if Dyson has been around long enough though. Ian Kinsler has been around forever and was stealing a ton of bases for a while. Lorenzo Cain? Idk.

I literally never have great basestealers in fantasy so I'm constantly monitoring the stolen base leaders on the wire Literally the only reason why I know any of those names besides Gardner and Kinsler. Wouldn't be shocked at all if it's Kinsler, considering his longevitiy.

Dear Havas,

We hope you and your loved ones are safe and well.

Thank you for purchasing single game tickets for 2020 July, August or September Phillie games. As you are likely aware, MLB will soon be announcing a new 60 game 2020 schedule. As a result, the original 2020 schedule is now void. With that, please find your options for your July, August or September tickets that have been impacted.

QuoteGreg Maddux went seven innings, allowing one walk, 27 years ago today, on July 16, 1993.

Why does it matter?

Glad you asked.

Because from that point until the end of his career he would make 512 starts and surrender 512 bases on balls (90 were intentional walks).

there have been exhibition and spring training games but i believe this is the first regular season action in buffalo since 1885.

the buffalo bison were in the national league from 79-85 when they folded. the phillies (then the quakers) finished in 3rd in 1885 -- 30 games back of the cubs !

Apparently there are some issues with using Buffalo. (https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1987670)

It still seems to be the favorite to me, but supposedly other possibilities are Dunedin (leading the league in rainouts and heat exhaustion), Rochester and sharing PNC with the Pirates.

i like it for all levels of baseball except mlb

theres some justification for it to avoid 20 inning games. id consider a regular season rule where it starts in the 13th. play 3 innings SU then whatever get goofy to end it.

Equal to a 21 game suspension if playing 162.

For buzzing the towers of cheating scumbags. He didn't even hit them.

Joe Kelly games suspended - 8
Astros who cheated games suspended - 0

Manfred is horrible. Baseball wonders why they can't grab market share and new fans and it's for dumbshtein moves that make no sense. They dicked around getting started. Could have been the sole game going on for awhile and getting killed ratings. Now? Just one week in the spotlight before NBA and NHL go on.

They didn't do the bubble. They still enforce blackout rules for tv. They don't start games early to get more eyes on games early in the day while people are home.

They're the worst run and most gone deaf of the four majors by far.

Oh and while I'm ranting - someone tell the sabr nerds that bunting during the dumb farging extra innings runner on second rule is smart.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2020
Post by: ice grillin you on July 30, 2020, 07:05:42 AM
baseball doesnt get new viewers because people generally hate the actual sport not because joe kelly got suspended or the start times of games

baseballs bigger problem is alienating the fans it does have by doing dumb as farg shtein such as the man on second rule in extra innings...farg the bunting issue the rule shouldnt exist in the first place

it crazy to me that it is right in front of their eyes so obvious that they need to make rules that eliminate the shift yet they are inventing circus rules instead
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2020

baseball biggest problem is actually over exposure

you can watch 162 phillies game a year...why the farg would you ever want to or need to watch cubs-cardinals or twins-indians. thats why national ratings are bad. within markets the games do by and large better than nba and nhl

In extra innings, the offensive team begins every inning with a runner put at second base.  Just an attempt to keep the game from going too long.

Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2020

Honestly don't think the ghost runner or 7 innings rules will stick. I could see something like the ghost runner becoming permanent years from now, but I think they will go back to the usual extra innings rules in the seasons immediately after the pandemic. The legit gripes about pace and length of the game aren't really about what happens in the <10% of games that go into extra innings.

DH is the one where I feel like enough of MLB wants it bad, for reasons not related to covid. Some NL execs swear no, though.

The whole season feels to me like it lacks legitimacy, like the XFL or some new league that people don't take seriously. No one wants extra innings or long doubleheaders in games that don't really matter, so I think having gimmicky rules to reduce the amount of baseball makes sense this year. Would rather just not have the season at all, but the existence of this season is more about serving the desires of the owners and players than the fans.

This is spot on.  When I feel a game dragging, it's often well before the ninth inning, nevermind extras.

Not a good day for nerd ball in Atlanta. Neither team will steal or bunt to move runners. Meanwhile they're swinging from their heels and have struck out about 40 times.

Reds have been particularly awful.

they thought everyone at the top of the draft was garbage so they took the one guy willing to take a below-slot offer so they could go over slot with their 2nd and 3rd picks

well. moniak is abysmal. kevin gowdy had serious arm trouble, pitched last year and was abysmal. and cole stobbe had to repeat lakewood in 2019

there is not a single soul defending the move...its just such a straw man argument to dismiss "analytics" because one move in one game one manager made was dumb. roberts managed g5/6 perfectly. the dodgers roster construction was flawless. im sure this all done with a couple of old dudes in the back room smoking cigars and using their guts.

Blahhhh blah blah

SOMETIMES analytics have a place. But that horseshtein with how managers are told to handle pitchers? No. Oh he's going to face a lineup for the third time? The horror. Maybe for some guys you lift them. But when you have your top starters dealing? Or shtein anyone who is throwing a good game...leave them in.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2020
Post by: MDS on October 28, 2020, 12:33:08 PM
the data for SP's facing hitters a 3rd time is there. you can choose to ignore it or not, but the facts bear out. does that mean that pitchers must *always* come out after facing 18 batters? no.

in this particular case, it was evident snell was dealing. it was stupid to take him out. most of the time its the right and obvious move to make. for this game, didnt take a math whiz to figure out what to do. cash did the wrong thing. his team lost, as it shouldve.

Now I'm going to really puke.

As Hawaii has always been a big Dodgers market been watching/following this organization for decades (no, not as far back as Brooklyn) but they have been masterful at home grown talent.  Mind boggling it's been 33 years for this franchise.  Same issue in the 70's, that team was loaded - Garvey, Baker, Cey, Lopes, Russell, Yeager, Sutton, etc.  Only won in '81 during two season strike year.
