Didn't see one so here it is.
The U.S. is playing Mexico right now and is actually winning 2-1 at halftime in Houston. They scored a third goal that was disallowed on a phantom offsides call.
Fascinating, I know.

Hahaha. I knew that was coming.
Sorry my predictability is so boring.

As is soccer.
It's a friendly so it ain't all that exciting. But the World Cup is the best event in sports. Hands down.
What are you? a gay?
Have they decided where they are going to have the next world cup? Is it still south africa or is it going to be Brazil? If it's Brazil, I'm going.
I agree, World Cup is king all....it's the only time I watch soccer though.
The English Premiership is excellent as well. We watch it every weekend since my waterhead miracle loves soccer so much.
The World Cup is just off the charts. I've never seen anything like it when they had matches in Orlando in 1994.

i do think soccer is fairly gay, and i hate how they flop like little pansies, but i've been watching it a lot lately since my neighborhood bar is a big soccer bar. they show dozens of premiership and other foreign league games and the place gets packed with wasted foreigners. it's a good time.

You're still gay for thinking world cup is king all. All 4 major sports playoffs + March Madness + College World Series + NCAA Bowl Season are all above and beyond farging soccer.
I don't give a turd about soccer...but the World Cup is about as great a sporting even as you can muster up.
Half the world stops everything for the world cup. I have a neighbor that had world cup parties at their house last time around...at 3 am on a tuesday. And they loaded their house with people.

Anyone who'd rather watch the nhl or nba playoffs, college world series or fargfest of meaningless bowl games over a once every four years elite athletic competition where people are playing for pride of their countries is an idiot.
the fact that just about everyone in the world cares about this silly soccer tournament, not just a few million people from america, is what makes it so good. also that its not every year, that there is an enormous amount of build up and hype around it, all the different cultures and languages coming together to just play a sport. its great and transcends any yearly sporting event in america. not even close.

Soccer has one huge problem to solve before Americans buy in. It's not the low scoring, and it's not the lack of breaks for commercials.
It's the flopping, mincing, nancyboy culture of feigning injury to draw the foul. Americans will never tolerate that kind of cheap weak melodrama in sport. It does happen some in the NBA...but not nearly to the degree it happens in soccer.
I hate it when I agree with Dio but I do so whole heartedly in this instance. Watch a Premiership match. There's more half-assed diving going on than at a Sandals Resort in Jamaica.
Another problem is the officiating although less so than the diving bit. The referee seems to pull the yellow card way too quickly for some teams yet never pulls it for the other. Lots of favoritism going on over there but that sort of thing happens way too frequently in the NHL too.
Whatever, though. Soccer when it's played at its highest level with its best players in really interesting to watch. Unfortunately the MLS would be like a third rate minor league in Europe and elsewhere so until the quality of talent increases, there's no point in watching that mess.
Exactly.
Bunch of a farging Hoydas, the lot of them.
Play some football or some Rugby. Soccer in America is for the Hoydas that couldn't take the pads and the hitting in football, but were too bored to run cross country and needed a sphere to kick around while they ran.
Soccer for recreational purposes/playing with some friends isn't too bad.
Soccer players are mos def not Hoydas...it's as tough as any other sport you wanna name in its own way, just as each serious sport can boast. [Baseball is not a serious sport, for the record.]
The problem is the culture, not the players. They are plenty physically and mentally tough enough to play without the flopping crap, but they can't really afford to give it up unless everyone does. They flop because it works..you flop, you get the call, the other team is penalized, you gain advantage. That culture has to change before Americans will tune in.
Which reminds me.
Why the hell doesn't rugby get popular in America?
They did a poll my senior year to see if enough people would be interested to start a high school rugby team, and as far as I know the answer was no, because there's still no team there.
Dio-I know soccer players can be "tough", but when you're in America and you can play a sport that requires wearing full pads in 95 degree weather and includes violent and vicious hits...wheres the toughness now? Sign up and play a sport where when there's a violent hit, it's not an accident.
We asked the soccer team to suit up a few times and play with us a little bit and we always got the head shaking "no way man" response. Bitches.
soccer players are in great shape...but so are marathon runners...and they both have about equal toughness

We get it, Munson. You're a he-man and hate the sport. Now shoo...
Get off your brutish high horse, thug boy. Being able to hit and take a hit isn't the sole mark of athletic toughness. Just as the soccer player ain't down with getting mauled by a 265 lb LB, nor could that LB play even 20 minutes straight at any position on the soccer pitch, save perhaps goalie.
They are different and making 'football players are men, soccer players are bitches' statements is ignant.
I have no problem admitting that I think you're more tough and more of a man if you can go out there in the heat and humidity, in full pads, and often be sprinting, and also knocking the snot out of people. And if you ask me, I think running for short periods of time and hitting/exerting energy on hitting/contact with other people is just as hard, if not harder then running around and not hitting anybody 98% of the time.
Fascinating.
Isn't it?
i dont think they are the least bit tough

that has anything to do with the american sports fan not liking soccer

the bottom line is the farging sport sucks to watch

Football & baseball are bastichized versions of rugby & cricket.
I'll give you basketball but at its highest level (NBA) it's still a freak show. And speaking as someone who's been to a top notch soccer match, I'd take it over the NBA any day of the week. College basketball is obviously a different story.
I'm going to have to disagree with to a certain extent Dio. As Munson said, if your logic follows, rugby and lacrosse would much more popular in America (although not popular world wide).
I think the reason America doesn't tune in is our big-time athletes don't play the sport. Can you imagine if LeBron or MJ or Ray Lewis played soccer. America would tune in. Donovan, Beasley and Adu couldn't make it to the majors in women's sports and thusly don't stack up against world wide competition.
Of course you could make the counter argument that the sport would have to be popular first to draw our best athletes into playing soccer as well.
im talking about the sports themselves as whole...three are highly watchable one is unwatchable...american sports fans just happen to be able to recognize this better than smelly eurotrash

QuotePhiladelphia awarded 16th MLS franchise
The wait is finally over Philadelphia, Major League Soccer is coming to your city.
MLS has chosen Philadelphia to become the league's 16th franchise, sources told SBI on Wednesday night. The announcement is set for next Thursday.
Philadelphia beat out St. Louis for the right to join the league, helped in no small part by the state of Pennsylvania's decision to approve $47 million in state funding for a proposed $115 million stadium in Chester, Pa.
The Philadelphia team is slated to begin play in 2010.

7th game. but i'm sure the attendance numbers have made up for his lack of production.
He was out of shape and then got hurt last year. But like Matt said the money they made off of his mere presence on the team more than made up for his lack of production on the field.
I read somewhere that the MLS has sold more Beckham jerseys than all other jerseys combined and that's really what he's here for anyway. His days as a premiere soccer player are long behind him.

Yep, MLS needed a "face" to make it more marketable and visible, which I think they've succeeded in doing.
While most of the people in our age group didn't have soccer as a sports option growing up, there's a generation of kids now maturing that have adopted soccer as a "main stream" sport, so the success of the new Philly franchise wouldn't be a surprise. I also wouldn't be surprised if it fell flat on it's face either, as I'm not sure if this market is ready to support it. I used to take my kids to Philly Charge matches until the women's league folded & it was the most fan-friendly sport I've been to.
Up until I was about 30, I was in the "soccer is gay" camp, but between being involved with my kids playing, coaching, the increase in soccer coverage on tv & now playing in a men's over 30 league, it's in my top 3 of favorite sports to watch.
chuck klostermans essay on soccer is one of the most fabulous things ive ever read and 150% on point...
I've spent the last fifteen years of my life railing against the game of soccer, an exercise that has been lauded as "the sport of the future" since 1977. Thankfully, that dystopia has never come. But people continue to tell me that soccer will soon become part of the fabric of this country, and that soccer will eventually be as popular as football, basketball, karate, pinball, smoking, glue sniffing, menstruation, animal cruelty, photocopying, and everything else that fuels the eroticized, hyperkinetic zeitgeist of Americana. After the U.S. placed eighth in the 2002 World Cup tournament, team forward Clint Mathis said, "If we can turn one more person who wasn't a soccer fan into a soccer fan, we've accomplished something." Apparently, that's all that matters to these idiots. They won't be satisfied until we're all systematically brainwashed into thinking soccer is cool and that placing eighth (and losing to Poland!) is somehow noble. However, I know this will never happen. Not really. Dumb bunnies like Clint Mathis will be wrong forever, and that might be the only thing saving us from ourselves.
Soccer unconsciously rewards the outcast, which is why so many adults are fooled into thinking their kids love it. The truth is that most children don't love soccer; they simply hate the alternatives more. For 60 percent of the adolescents in any fourth-grade classroom, sports are a humiliation waiting to happen. These are the kids who play baseball and strike out four times a game. These are the kids afraid to get fouled in basketball, because it only means they're now required to shoot two free throws, which equates to two air balls. Basketball games actually stop to recognize their failure. And football is nothing more than an ironical death sentence; somehow, outcasts find themsevles in a situation where the people normally penalized for teasing them are suddenly urged to annihilate them.
That is why soccer seems like such a respite from all that mortification; it's the one aerobic activity where nothingness is expected. Even at the highest levels, every soccer match seems to end 1-0 or 2-1. A normal eleven-year-old can play an entire season without placing toe to sphere and nobody would even notice, assuming he or she does a proper job of running about and avoiding major collisions.
Soccer fanatics love to tell you that soccer is the most popular game on earth and that it's played by 500 million people every day, as if that somehow proves its value. Actually, the opposite is true. Why should I care that every single citizen of Chile and Iran and Gibraltar thoughtlessly adores "football"? Do the people making this argument also assume Coca-Cola is ambrosia? Real sports aren't for everyone. And don't accuse me of being the Ugly American for degrading soccer. That has nothing to do with it. It's not xenophobic to hate soccer; it's socially reprehensible to support it. To say you love soccer is to say you believe in enforced equality more than you believe in the value of competition and the capacity of the human spirit. It should surprise no one that Benito Mussolini loved being photographed with Italian soccer stars during the 1930s; they were undoubtedly kindred spirits. I would sooner have my kid deal crystal meth than play soccer. Every time I pull up behind a Ford Aerostar with a "#1 Soccer Mom" bumper sticker, I feel like I'm marching in the wake of the Khmer Rouge.
That said, I don't feel my thoughts on soccer are radical. If push came to shove, I would be more than willing to compromise: It's not necessary to wholly outlaw soccer as a living entity. I concede that it has a right to exist. All I ask is that I never have to see it on television, that it's never played in public (or supported with public funding), and that nobody -- and I mean nobody -- ever utters the phrase "Soccer is the sport of the future" for the next forty thousand years.
I don't understand why you bother posting in threads in which the topic doesn't interest you.

Either way, there is clearly no room for soccer.

I don't know about that, he's partly right on some aspects, but completely off on others.
As much as anyone else, I abhor the elitists in soccer who think the non-fan is too stupid or an "ugly american" for not getting the sport. I also dislike the "#1 Soccer Mom" types and am more than down with forced anal on people who parade their child's accomplishments on their cars (honor roll parents, that means you too).
I don't think soccer will ever replace the 4 major sports in the US (well maybe hockey) but I think you'll see in the next 10 years that it will find it's niche in the US & be among the higher end of the "2nd tier" sports like golf, tennis, Arizona Cardinals football & the World Series of Poker.

This part I can't agree with, partly because he's making an assumption that soccer players are not athletes in other sports & soccer is comprised of a bunch of Timmy Lupuses. The other part, is his assumption that players are not competitive & everyone is happy to just be there, win or lose, collect their orange wedges & participant ribbons.
It's a very popular sport at a very young age, as it's cheap & doesn't require extensive travel at the intramural level. It's at this young level where it's cool to just watch the kids swarm the ball & be happy if one luckily dribbles in the goal. Once the kids the hit 9-10, you start to see the "Timmy Lupus" types start to weed out & the kids who are still in it, aren't there because they can't handle the grueling endurance demands of baseball. At this point, it becomes extremely competitive from both a player's & coaches standpoint with year round training, games/tournaments & special trainers brought in. The kid's at this level are highly scrutinized and can not hide their lack of skill behind other players like in some other sports. Play in most games can get very physical & confrontational. I played football, wrestled & competed in karate and I can vouch first hand that this is not a "non contact" sport, though the fake flopping I've see on some televised games gives it a bad impression.

Both of yesterday's games were fantastic. Syracuse's comeback was remarkable and Hopkins was able to pull off the huge upset with an absolutely perfect game plan and superhuman goaltending. No one here cares about lacrosse, but both games were great. Yay sports.
As a side note, Gillette isn't as nice a stadium as I expected. I mean, it's nice and all, but there's a farging MASSIVE McDonalds inside. Give me a farging break.
I think lax is an awesome sport and I've said numerous times that I like it a hell of a lot more than hockey.
Duke's 2007 senior players were awarded an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA since they had lost an entire season during the the whole rape scandal and I thought that was a good decision. I think there were 13 players overall who gained an extra year of eligibility and 5 or 6 of them came back. One dude had moved on the Virginia to do his post graduate work and played his final year with them. Would have made a decent story had both schools won yesterday and faced off in the finals. But they didn't, so farg it.
Duke and UVA played twice this year with Duke taking both games. I was rooting for a rematch, but as soon as UVA lost I was rooting for the underdog. Hopkins' win really was remarkable. The talent difference was massive, but their defense was stifling and they were able to hold the ball on offense for minutes at a time to keep it away from Duke's attackmen. Duke was so out-coached it was embarrassing.

amazing finish to the turkey-croatia match. no gaols for 119 minutes, then one for each in the last minute. going to penalty kicks.

croatia I hope..
The Turks. Go Turkey.
Greece will love that news.
Greece choked on their own shtein against the Russians. They have nothing to say.

Turkey was hands down the best place (internationally) that I've ever been. No contest. So suck it.
I've never been. Would be hard to choose between the two, I don't know which I'd hit first. Probably Greece since you've already stained Turkey with your praise, shteinface.
Luckily I've stained both with my booziness. Greece was alright. I've got nothing bad to say about it outside of the panting bloated dogs coating the streets of Athens. Turkey was incredible.
The Italians got beaten meaning that the two teams that know for flopping around on the ground the most (Italy and Portugal) are both eliminated. Which is good.
What's not good is the Rooskies, Nazi's, Turks and Spanards are left. Who to pick...who to pick...

Bulgaria gives up 139 shots on goal in 82-0 women's hockey loss
ESPN.com news services
There's the "agony of defeat." And then there's this women's ice hockey score from the European Olympic pre-qualifying tournament: Slovakia 82, Bulgaria 0.
That's correct: eighty-two goals for Slovakia, none for Bulgaria.
The International Ice Hockey Federation said the result, from a game played Saturday at the tournament in Liepaja, Latvia, set a record score for a women's IIHF-sanctioned event. It was not the all-time record for futility, however; that is still held by Thailand, which lost 92-0 to South Korea in the 1998 Asia-Oceania U18 Championship.
Slovakia, which won all four of its games at the tournament, outshot Bulgaria 139-0, scoring on 58.9 percent of their shots on goal. They averaged one goal every 44 seconds.
Bulgaria trailed 7-0 after 5 minutes, 19-0 after 10 and 31-0 at the end of the first period.
The drubbing capped a woeful showing for the Bulgarian women, who also lost 30-1 to Croatia and 41-0 to Italy in earlier games.
Not sure what surprises me more about that score: the fact that they gave up 82 goals, or the fact that they couldn't even get one freaking shot on net.
Slovakia could have put the goalie on the bench and still had a shutout.
ha..definitely the shots...that the first thing that jumped out at me...i mean they couldnt have a gotten a couple garbage shots on goal when it like 77-0 and bulgaria was playing a little loose

QuoteIsiah Thomas vs. Al Davis: The Final Showdown

Isiah Thomas vs. Al Davis: The Final Showdown
Al Davis's latest antics in Oakland leave us pining for the good old days of another warped franchise killer — a certain bad-boy GM in New York. But which guy is more destructive? Let's find out.
by Matt Taibbi
It just isn't the same without Isiah.
When Isiah Thomas was running the Knicks, every morning in New York City was like Christmas. I'd go to sleep dreaming of the possible back page headlines of the next day's Post. Would it be "Nab Zeke in Goat Sex Hoax"? Or how about "Isiah: Zach, Eddy 'sorry' for Eaten Stewardess"? My favorite was a real one: "Marbury's Truck-sex Gal: 'I was in control.'"
True, the post-Knicks Thomas headlines have lately made a decisive move toward the dreaded Strawberry/Canseco realm of unfunny retired-jock tragedy. Reports of an incident in which Thomas apparently overdosed on 10 Lunesta pills (and then tried to claim that it was his daughter, not he, who was taken to the hospital) were so strange and unsettling that even the most embittered Knicks fans hesitated to make the obvious joke; i.e., that Thomas couldn't even pull off a suicide correctly. (What, no Drano in the house?)
It wasn't like that during Isiah's Knicks days, when you always knew when to laugh. From the beginning it was like rooting for a no-hitter in baseball. A year into his GM job you were aware that there wasn't a single mistake Zeke hadn't made. He stayed hot by passing up Andrew Bynum to draft Channing Frye in 2005, then scared us all by hesitating a few days before rescuing the streak by blowing $30 million on fat-ass Jerome James.
Then came the brilliant stuff: following up the James deal by acquiring, at enormous cost, two more underachieving, elephantine big men, Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph, one of whom had a heart condition and the other a history of stealing pants, selling guns, and breaking the eye sockets of teammates. To complement this front line, Thomas then set out to fill his backcourt with every tweener-size no-conscience jacker in the NBA — literally every single one, from Steve Francis to Stephon Marbury to Jamal Crawford to Q-Rich to Nate Robinson — a mistake of enthusiasm he eventually tried to counter by giving another $30 million to Jared Jeffries, a player whose greatest attribute was that he was a nonshooter with Kate Moss arms and no natural position.
By the time he was finally forced out of office last season, Isiah had achieved the first perfect score of managerial suckitude in sports history. As in Dresden or Nagasaki, the franchise destruction was total. Every last roster spot on the team seemed to be occupied by someone in a neck brace making $19 million a year for the next 10 years, and the star player was the only person in America weirder than Mike Tyson and spent his off-seasons getting skull tattoos and talking about his "third eye."
The one place Isiah fell short was in the area of not surviving forever. This is reason alone to make a case that it's not him but 766-year-old Al Davis who owns America's worst sports management legacy. But it's a tough call, and for a sports fan, a fascinating debate. In my mind there are five main criteria.
1. Did the owner/manager cripple the team through embarrassingly transparent efforts to re-create his glory years using below-par current-era personnel bearing superficial resemblances to old heroes?
The worst thing that ever happened to Al Davis was all the winning the Raiders did in the '70s and early '80s, because once his brain dried out he spent the rest of his addled life trying to reacquire Dave Casper, Cliff Branch, and Art Shell. When Todd Marinovich came up through USC there was never any question of what team he would wind up playing for. You knew Davis would grab him, thinking an erratic left-handed quarterback with a substance-abuse problem had to be the next Ken Stabler.
But Davis here is trumped by Isiah, who in the course of his Knicks tenure reacquired almost every one of his Detroit Bad Boys teammates at least once (he signed the memory of Mark Aguirre's ass three different times via the James/Curry/Randolph moves). Drafting virtually unknown Renaldo Balkman with the 20th selection, Thomas said that "he reminds me a lot of a Rodman," then defended the high pick by claiming Phoenix planned on taking him with the 21st pick — news that was a surprise to Phoenix. And he ludicrously compared his dribble-off-the-foot all-star tandem of Francis and Marbury to himself and Joe Dumars. Edge: Knicks
2. Did the owner/manager acquire at least one player involved in the possible rape of a sleeping person?
Check and check, sort of. In the case of a sex assault (allegedly) committed by Raider Darrell Russell and two pals over five agonizing, videotaped hours in 2002, the victim was not sleeping exactly, but drugged, which made the whole situation infinitely creepier. Russell was the hulking bad-attitude defensive tackle Davis drafted with the second overall pick in 1997 to play alongside hulking bad-attitude defensive tackle Chester "the Molester" McGlockton. (You might remember McGlockton as the guy fined for stealing cable TV in a year in which he made more than $1 million.) Russell was charged with 25 felony counts, but those were dropped just in time for him to get himself killed driving into a bus.
Then you have the Knicks' Randolph. Back when he was playing for Portland he invited two drunk women back to his place for a sex show and got pissed when they only simulated sex instead of really having it. After the show was over one girl went to the bathroom to get sick while the other fell asleep. She claims she woke up with Randolph trying to ram his alleged cock in her alleged ass. The Portland DA, in a hilariously semi-redacted statement, declined to prosecute Randolph for doing "a train" on the woman, citing lack of evidence, and Isiah, naturally, snapped Randolph up as soon as the Blazers made him available in a trade.
This is a hard choice. Davis has a history of signing miscreants (at USC, Marinovich beat a rape charge, screamed at his coach on national TV, and capped his college career with an arrest for cocaine possession), but the nod has to go to Thomas, who unlike Davis, was personally involved in a sex-harassment case. If Davis ever costs the Raiders $11 million by getting caught trying to kiss a recoiling female employee, calling her a "ho," and begging her to visit him "off site," the decision might change, but until then it's Edge: Knicks
Part II
Quote3. Under the owner/manager's direction, did the team treat everybody — fans, employees, media, everybody — like dogshtein?
It was weirdly appropriate when New York Post sportswriter Mike Vaccaro compared the Knicks beat to a "gulag." Isiah Thomas was to owner James Dolan what Vyacheslav Molotov was to Stalin, a servile enabler of the boss's institutional sadism whose only goals in life were to have a nice office and to die of natural causes. The Knicks under Dolan fostered a culture of abuse in which everyone below ownership is treated like a Kashmiri manservant: Let them eat scraps and chain them to a radiator when you leave home.
There was a thematic consistency to everything the Knicks did in those years, from the team handing out cheap processed turkey sandwiches to the beat press in a league that otherwise does everything first class, to its star point guard hustling an intern into an SUV for sex, to its siccing of security on fans who wore fire isiah T-shirts. They stopped short of issuing a team slogan, like "The New York Knicks: You Can Kiss Our Ass," but only just barely.
In some ways the Knicks under Dolan have resembled the White House under George W. Bush: an institution of public trust that was hijacked for years by the Oedipal inferiority complex of a whining prince-in-training. A goateed 5-foot-6 cable-industry Napoleon with a Time Bandits dwarf face, little Jimmy Dolan became famous for trying to yell his way into billionaire dad Chuck's legacy. "He can treat people like shtein," said former Cablevision security chief Robert Astarita. "All of us, every single one of us, and he gets away with it."
The fact that Thomas represented Dolan's vindictive management style so vigorously is what made him a perfect yes-man and allowed him to i-stay-uh (as the Post might put it) for so long: If he had just signed one or two fewer max-contract busts he might have stayed on forever in a Molotov-like capacity, quietly signing death warrants and negotiating with the Nazis while the Larry Browns of the world took the blame and went to the firing squad. Compared with Al Davis, who was a football visionary once upon a time and whose institutional cruelty has at least always been caused by frustration over losing, the Dolan/Thomas pathology is far more revolting. Edge: Knicks
4. Did the owner/manager tie up the judicial system with one pointless legal farg-snit after another?
This is a rout for Davis. In the Dolan/Thomas era the Knicks went to court really only when they were being sued. Davis has sued everybody. Check your mailbox; he's suing you. In the '80s he filed an antitrust suit against the NFL to allow him to move from Oakland to Los Angeles; when the move didn't work he sued the NFL again for sabotaging his efforts to get a new stadium, then later sued an accounting firm and the Oakland Coliseum for luring him back by falsely promising 15 years of sellouts. Amazingly, when the doomed USFL filed an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL in 1986, Davis couldn't help himself and sided with the USFL! If he keeps it up he has a shot at the ultimate American deathbed existence as perfected by Howard Hughes, who in his last years spent nearly all of his waking hours either consulting with tort lawyers or watching Ice Station Zebra over and over. Edge: Raiders
5. After panic-firing a popular championship-caliber coach following an extended and gruesomely public penis-measuring contest, did the owner/manager immediately hire the one person on Earth who had been conclusively proven incapable of doing the job?
This, again, is a tough call, because while Al Davis twice replaced good coaches with long-dead beached-manatee-impersonator Art Shell, Thomas replaced the legendary Larry Brown with an even more outrageous choice: himself. This is a situation where you really have to take points away from Davis for his failure to hire Shell again after the Lane Kiffin firing. That was the obvious move, and he didn't do it. In fact he should have just slapped a headset on a cardboard cutout of Shell and stuck it on the sidelines for the rest of the season, rigging it with a tape loop that called the same halfback run off-tackle whenever you pulled a string. Edge: Knicks
In the end, there's no way to deny that the Dolan/Thomas Knicks were the worst-managed sports franchise of all time. Al Davis is old and demented and very soon will remind you of John Dugan's Grandpa character in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but he won three Super Bowls. Six chimpanzees would have typed Gravity's Rainbow in Finnish before we ever saw Thomas and Dolan hold up an NBA trophy. Those were special times; cherish the memories.

The new Major League Soccer team also announced ticket prices for 17-game packages. They start at $275 for the least expensive seats and rise to $1,100 for packages including reserve parking and food and beverage services.

Yes, but apparently they hate themselves.
id hate myself to if all i played was golf tennis lacrosse and skied in the offseason
My point is that you already hate what you are so the argument is academic.
White Guilt
i just don't understand how someone could hate lax or golf because it's played by "rich white kids" but still love hockey. are they playing the hockey in ghettos now?
hockey is white cause there isnt any brothers in canada...but the ones that can play are allowed in...lacrosse and golf are exclusive in the US
also most of the white kids growing up in canada playing hockey are poor kids who learn to play on a pond in kamloops...they arent private school seashellers paying 20 thousand bucks a year to be in a travel league that couldnt beat the worst kindergarten team in canada
Seek help.
i still love ya big guy dont ever change
The best kid on our high schools lacrosse team was black, he got a full ride to UD.
A couple of other kids got scholarships to La Salle...they were white. No, they weren't rich. Middle class at best.
Claymont is definitely not middle class, i'd go below that. lol
Haha well yeah one of my best friends from Claymont played for the lacrosse team...but the ones that went on to play in college were more like Talleyville, Brandywood, etc....middle class kids.
But, no, IGY's right...only really rich white people play it.
Quote from: Munson on May 14, 2009, 02:40:34 PM

shocking
i can only imagine how big a dream it is to be middle class for people who reside where youre from
Not that big, considering the neighborhood next to my old high school has been shopped by TO, Lito Sheppard, and Sheldon Brown.
No one on the lacrosse team lived there though.
You're still an idiot.
This conversation is awesome. Why are you trying to convince IGY of anything. He has irrational biases that are deeply ingrained and will not budge under any circumstances. I guarantee that he has no problem with the sport itself, he just hates that rich white people are the ones who stereotypically represent the sport. As though there's some vast conspiracy to keep lacrosse out of the inner cities. Never mind that kids from public schools and widely varied socio-economic backgrounds all over the east coast (and growing) play as well.
IGY is delusional.
Munson is an idiot.
There, conversation complete.
I'm just waiting for the polynesians to get a hold of lacrosse.
At least we have confirmed what was already suspected...IGY hates himself.
no the sport REALLY sucks (its easily worse than soccer and thats saying something)....its just that the people that play it somehow suck more and almost overshadow how bad the actual sport is
Sure thing, buddy.

Anyone else besides Rusty check out the end of that Syracuse/Cornell championship yesterday? Cornell had a 1-goal lead and possession with 14 seconds left, runs up the field, and instead of throwing it down toward the Syracuse goalie and wasting the rest of the clock, the kid loses the ball and turns it over trying to get it to a teammate, everyone panics, Syracuse kid flips it to a teammate, ball goes off the Cornell defender's stick to the Syracuse teammate and it's fired into the net with 4 seconds left. Syracuse wins 1 minute into OT for back-to-back titles...
no because no one gives a shtein
yeah, i saw it. it was pretty damn awesome. i couldn't believe that dude from cornell didn't just chuck the ball down field. idiot. that's why smart people make bad jocks. he spends too much time in the class room and not enough time in the film room.
farg Syracuse. farg Cornell. Great farging game, one of the most exciting finishes to a sporting event I've ever seen.
Also, Champion's League final tomorrow afternoon. Man U vs. FC Barcelona.

can't say i blame her though. i often wonder how much faster and agile i would be if a had a few inches of my junk trimmed off.
was watching college softball for a few minutes and i don't understand why the girls get so excited about making very routine plays. i'm talking about ground balls hit right to an infielder or a lazy fly ball that the outfielder barely has to move for. they celebrate and go out of their way to high 5 each other. on a weak fly to left, the outfielder caught it and the ss ran out there and gave her a fist bump like she just made a diving catch or something. hell, even when the men make great plays, they don't do anything except maybe give a head nod or a finger point. i just don't get what they're so excited about.
there also seems to be no regulation regarding head gear. some girls wear visors, some don't wear anything.
a few of the girls also have some crazy ish holding thier hair in place. like sparkly hair clips and ribbons and bows and shtein. that's gotta be a little distracting when you're standing in the batters box and the pitcher has 15 pieces of flair flapping around in the wind.
and why do they have football style face masks on their batting helmets?
at least they wear pants now. i remember seeing an ncaa game a couple years ago and they were all wearing shorts.
Um, girls suck at athletics and simple hand-eye accomplishments are a big deal. This isn't that confusing.
if you closed your eyes and the ball somehow ended up in your glove youd be pretty damn excited to

Potentially one of the biggest upsets in the history of soccer is brewing right now. The U.S. is beating Spain 2-0 in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup.
- Spain had won 35 straight international matches and was ranked number 1 in the world.
- The US sucks.
Ridiculously huge upset.
Sweet. Maybe the U.S. will have a legit shot of not embarassing themselves in the World Cup.
No chance. If there's one thing they've proven repeatedly over the last 7 years it's that they have no capacity for building off of strong international wins. But it was fun to watch anyway.
I figured when I got home from work I'd read about how they were exposed and played with. Color me patriotic.
I have an on-going love-hate relationship with U.S. Soccer because for the most part it's almost entirely putrid. But I have to say that royal upsets like this seem to be coming more regularly than the usual once-a-decade frequency they used to occur.
It's always going to be a niche sport in this country, and I doubt the U.S. will ever become a true power simply because almost all of the elite athletes play other sports, but like rjs said, it's nice to watch them when hugely unexpected upsets happen.
So Spain pulled out a win for third place in the Confederations Cup. Let's see what the U.S. can do. I probably won't be able to see the game. I think we're going to Rocky Mountain National park today or some such shtein.

Rachel breaks records in Mother Goose
By David Grening
Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Rachel Alexandra toyed with her two opponents in the Grade 1 Mother Goose on Saturday at Belmont, winning by 19 1/4 lengths under Calvin Borel.
ELMONT, N.Y. - As trainer Steve Asmussen walked into the Belmont Park saddling area, several yards behind his filly Rachel Alexandra, a young boy shouted to him, "Mr. Asmussen, 30 lengths."
With a raised eyebrow, Asmussen, who kept on walking, said to no one in particular, "I'll take three-quarters."
Well, it wasn't 30 lengths, but it could have been.
In her first start since beating the boys in the Preakness, Rachel Alexandra rolled to a devastatingly easy 19 1/4-length victory in Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 Mother Goose before a crowd of 13,352 on a gorgeous summer day in New York. Malibu Prayer, the pacesetter, finished second, 12 1/4 lengths ahead of Flashing. Don't Forget Gil and Hopeful Image both were scratched Saturday morning due to elevated temperatures.
Rachel Alexandra's time of 1:46.33 established a stakes record, beating the time of 1:46.58 set by Lakeway in 1994. Her margin of victory was also a record, eclipsing the 13 1/2-length win by Ruffian in 1975. Saturday was the 53rd Mother Goose.
"She's something special - she's one for the ages," owner Jess Jackson said. "She's a champion. I just hope we have enough horses entering the races that we fill them. It's more exciting when you have more competition."
There obviously are no 3-year-old fillies who can provide Rachel Alexandra any competition. Two starts back, she won the Kentucky Oaks by 20 1/4 lengths. In between, she beat males in the Preakness. Perhaps the only frontier is the 5-year-old mare Zenyatta, who remained undefeated by winning the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap about 15 minutes after Rachel Alexandra won.
"That'd be delightful, the two best fillies in a decade or so," Jackson said about a potential meeting.
Calvin Borel let Rachel Alexandra settle into third position while Malibu Prayer set the pace under John Velazquez, with Flashing stalking her through fractions of 22.57 seconds, 44.66, and 1:08.86 for six furlongs. Leaving the three-furlong pole, Borel nudged his filly a little bit and she split horses outside the quarter pole and exploded to the lead. Borel basically turned into a statue for the final sixteenth, as Rachel Alexandra cruised home to her seventh straight win as the 1-20 favorite, returning $2.10.
"She's not normal," Borel said. "She's unbelievable."
Asmussen said he did not give Borel any instructions about how to ride the filly.
"My conversation with Calvin was 'You know her, get her in a comfortable stride, do what's best for her regardless of what anybody else does,' " Asmussen said. "Calvin discusses her all the time, he loves to talk about her, just her rhythm, her stride, and that's what he was very emphatic about. Obviously, he found it, and it is quite impressive."

The positive thing is that they absolutely dominated the first half. Not just on the score sheet but controlled the pace of everything that happened.
The negative is that they played like the US in the second half.

I tried to watch a few minutes of the soccer game a couple of different times. Some of the things that are souring me somewhat in hockey are there in droves in the soccer matches.
One U.S. player was bunped, and fell like he had been shot. Actually took him completely out of the play (I think this was at the end of the first half) and Brazil ended up with a pistine scoring chance. To me, he was showboating to try to get a call. Just cover your damn man.
When Brazil scored their third goal, they were acting like they had just won the World Cup. I know that it put them ahead (and ended up being the game winner), but there was still a lot of time left. Stop prancing like a bunch of whorish prom dates.

The quality of the football itself seems pretty good. There are a lot of familiar names playing with just-below NFL ability. But this operation has been woefully under-promoted (I didn't realize it was on until tonight), and there's little to distinguish it rules-wise from the NFL.
The areas that do distinguish themselves aren't good. Terrible uniforms, even worse ref uniforms, illegible logos, lime green everywhere.... who designed the look of this league?
I wish this league luck, but I don't think it'll catch on, especially given the number of people in the stands.
only shot a non nfl league has to be okay is to go minor league baseball
small towns, close proximity, no money. basically admit the operation is small time and deal with it.
sure..but the problem is that football is hella more expensive than baseball
why not? why should the nfl be the only pro-football league out there?
same reason why there is not a variety of pro leagues in the other major sports
it doesnt make money and there is no draw
minor league baseball and hockey are both pro leagues. the players get paid, thus, pro-athletes.
it's all about market and marketing though. can't try and build this new league in/around cities with pro teams. probably gotta stay away from major college programs too. but if you go to cities like spokane, wa or billings, mt or salt lake city, then you might have a chance. basically, they need to stay in ma in order to be successful.
it's also a good opportunity for nfl castoffs and rejects to still play somewhere, which i don't have a problem with at all.

apples and oranges
minor league hockey and baseball are often the future of the mlb and nhl and the teams are affiliated with real sports teams...thus they have a lot of value
this league is complete garbage and while i could care less if it fails or not i will not wish it luck...i will only laugh at it
thats the other thing that could work, directly tying in nfl teams with these 'minor league teams.' even having them play at the same stadiums could help.

they already have that...its called the practice squad
so expand the practice squad and have them play games. youre telling me that wouldnt make any $? not major, but enough.
practice squads are filled with garbage...and you want to expand that crap into an entire league?
im guessing you never tried to watch the world league?
no and no
basically the idea was what kind of non nfl league could survive. and its these 2 options: pure minor philadelphia phantoms type stuff or making a ufl type deal but all the teams are in MA and they keep it real small time.
i have 0 interest in watching it. like the ufl.
I wish the league luck because the AFL and USFL made the NFL better, the ABA made the NBA better, etc. Competition is good, and if the league can't even compete than at least it can be a place to experiment with new rules and for players not given a fair shot in the NFL to make a name for themselves to get back into the game.
The UFL would also help the players side if there is a strike/lockout.
nothing will make the nfl better except for less teams...not more leagues

not so fast. They might be one of the four expansion teams next year, along with Pittsburgh, Colorado and LA...
btw Dallas is one of the returning teams, but Jerrah still owns all rights to "Desperados" and the blue star, so they're the Vigilantes instead. The league now has a structure similar to MLS where all revenue is distributed evenly and the league, not the individual teams, pays the players. If anyone cares (and I know that's nobody), the other returning teams are Arizona, Chicago, Cleveland, Utah and Romey's favorite teams Orlando and Tampa Bay. There's also a new Jacksonville team plus seven from their old AF2 minor league including the Kurt Warner Iowa Barnstormers...

I've seen a few of those plays, it's usually called the "wrong ball" play. Some douchebags have even done it at the high school level.
Typically though the QB walks the ball over to the sidelines, yelling to the coach and acting like there's something wrong with it. Then he takes off.

I'd rather seem them pull it off at the high school level than in peewees. High school kids should know a little bit better at that point, but taking advantage of a bunch of 10 year olds that don't know what they're doing? lame.

A pro poker league is set to start up in August. (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/poker/news/story?id=6470691)
thats awesome.
i've only played twice in the last few months, in vegas and once in richmond when i got beat and threw a beer can at rjs's face.
And missed.
only because i was hesitant and tried to stop.
And because of the 11,000 beers clogging up your synapses that night.
you guys are violent and scary
my matty story is a few weeks ago when we were boozing at Igy's. he and i ran out for cigarettes and when we got to the gas station, i pull up in front of the store, he goes, "Aren't you going to get gas?" i say no, i'm good. he goes, "What the farg are we here for then?" Me: "Cigarettes you retard" Him, "Oh, right. Be right back"
He's in there for awhile, talking to a rather thick young gal. Comes back out and says, "I was just talking to a super hot girl" Beer goggles, ftw.
haha...thats hilarious
my story is that i dont remember anyone leaving the house for anything that night (even though im sure you told me that exact story when you got back)
yeah, i think i did. it was classic matty
that sounds about right. although i do have a thing for thick black girls. so i wasn't lying.

i noticed that in soccer when a goal is scored the clock doesnt stop during the interminable and normally overly homoerotic goal celebrations....does this time get tacked onto extra time like an injury or is it just part of the "match"
as far as i can tell extra time is some randomly calculated number the ref comes up with
i think the time between goal and re-starting play is just taken as part of the game. even when a team gives up a goal, unless its late when they are desparate for time, everyone looks at is as a good minute of rest.
yea..i mean the sport is terrible so what do you expect
extra time used to be a total guesstimate...but i think now while its not down to the exact second its pretty damn close...anyway thats not what i was asking
i wanna know if the goal celebration time is accounted for

It's really up to the ref what to count, but the stoppage time is supposed to approximate all of the time that the ball is out of play. That includes any time between a goal and a kick-off. A really long and fruity celebration is one of the typical things they would add time for.
Not a big soccer fan but I think the running clock is actually one of the best things they got going, since it means their games aren't padded with an hour-plus of commercials like American sports. The way that stoppage time is calculated is kinda bullshtein though. They gotta standardize that more.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that official game time is kept by the ref on the field and that any stoppages are 100% at his discretion. I've never seen a team complain about the amount of time added at the end of a half or game, but I don't follow post-game interviews or any of that shtein so who knows.
Oh, they complain about it especially when they surrender a game-tying or losing goal.
The four minutes added yesterday during Man U & Chelsea was like an eternity. I thought for sure Chelsea was going to net one after United squandered at least a half dozen opps to go up two.
I like that the ref has total discretion. It's a game bitches, and the refs are in charge. Without them...no goddamn game.
Pretty sure there's no game without players.
Once it's for money it's not a game anyway.

Soccer Season Canceled Over 'Bernie' Dance, Students Protest
Police responded to the Perry Hall High School protest, although no one was arrested, a school official said.
The principal's decision ends the team's chance of competing for a championship.

Players on the Perry Hall High School varsity soccer perform the "Bernie" dance after a game. The dance was a frequent occurrence after games in the 2011 season. Kira Muller
Perry Hall High School students protested the early cancellation of the boys varsity soccer season after players were disciplined for performing a victory dance after a playoff game against rival Dulaney High on Tuesday.
Police responded to the Thursday morning demonstration but no one was arrested, said Assistant Principal Stephen Arnold.
The protest was in response to a decision to disqualify the team for the balance of the season because players displayed "inappropriate behavior that did not represent Perry Hall High School," following the Tuesday afternoon game, Arnold said.
Students, many wearing shirts that read "Bring Back Boys Varsity Soccer," stood across from the school on a public sidewalk shortly after the school day began at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday.
School administrators, including Principal George Roberts, approached the group of students and encouraged them to come to class. One of the school's on-duty police officers also responded and requested that additional officers from the White Marsh police precinct come to the scene, Arnold said.
Officers arrived to monitor traffic and make sure the protest did not get out of hand, he said. Students dispersed shortly after 8 a.m.
Some parents and students said the season-ending disqualification was unfair. A number of those who attended the Tuesday afternoon game said that after Perry Hall athletes won the game, the boys simply performed the "Bernie" dance on the field.
The dance imitates the dancing corpse from the film, "Weekend at Bernie's II." A video of people performing the dance is available on YouTube.
Parents of Dulaney students complained about the dance, calling it "sexually suggestive," Roberts said. - LOL
He and athletic director Bob Hruz then conducted an investigation, speaking to a select group of coaches, players and parents from both schools. By 3 p.m. Wednesday, they had decided to cancel the team's season, Roberts said.
"In my four years at Perry Hall, this is the first time an entire team has been suspended [from playing]," he said. "If I thought it was too harsh, I would have made another decision."
"Children should celebrate by cheering each other, giving high fives, hugs and pats on the back. But in my view, a choreographed, celebratory dance is not the way to celebrate victory," Roberts said.
"That celebration method is not acceptable. It's not what we expect from our student athletes at Perry Hall High School," he said.
Jen Carolyn, a parent of two Perry Hall seniors, said the dance is a frequent occurrence after and during games.
"I was there the whole time. ... When those boys did the 'Bernie' dance, they went out to the middle of field. There was no grabbing of privates, like some people said, and they did not do any vulgar language," she said.
Carolyn was one of two parents who met privately with Roberts after the protest.
"These kids have fought so hard to get where they are ... they've worked so hard to create the unity and brotherhood that they have. There was no due process," she said.
Student Matthew Cavey, who helped plan the protest on Facebook, was one of three students who met with Roberts privately following the demonstration.
"I believe you should fight for what you care about, and I care about my friends. As soon as my friends on the soccer team told me that their game was to be forfeited simply because of a dance, I immediately knew I had to fight to get this decision overruled," Cavey wrote in an email to Patch after the school day ended.
"We fought, protested and talked to Principal Roberts and that's all that matters, that we tried our best and that's all I ever asked of anyone," he wrote.

ok enough bs andy is on
only an hour and a half late
did you just hear what the announcer said
now you know why the o/u was so low. based on styles andy should coast
until he gets broke love
that break might make the difference...murray playing like a Hoyda
ps t minus 1 hour until they cut to serena
thats a terrible loss by murray....three ad's and he cant put it away...would have been a 6-2 set if he wins that game
holding true by a hair now
333 makes 27. no room for error though.
i think he goes 6-2 this set and the third is a rout...maybe even 6-0
your girl serena warming up

It's not like wresting has a long pedigree in the olympics
Wow indeed. It really doesn't have any other platform besides high school and college, does it? Not that I'm a huge fan of it, but the sport is pretty much as "Olympic" as it gets.
Yep - its shocking. That was probably the oldest of them all.
I was pissed when they dumped baseball.
Maybe they need to add some stupid X-games type competitions

can someone who knows a lot more about tennis than i do explain to me how nadal was the 3 seed in the french open
because they go by the current world rankings (which is a weird complicated system to begin with) and don't take into account the player's history in the tournament, etc. it's a bit retarded.
and i actually think nadal is dropping down a spot on the rankings after winning.
Quote from: phattymatty on June 09, 2013, 12:43:42 PM
and i actually think nadal is dropping down a spot on the rankings after winning.
really?
how is that possible
i honestly don't know the little details but the world rankings are weird, so it's something like because nadal won the same tournament last year (and 6 other times) he's actually not adding any points to his total. so essentially winning the french will never get him more points in the rankings, and he needs to start doing better in other tournaments.
one reason right now is that we might be watching the best crop of male tennis players in the history of the sport. like if novak won the french we would have 3 active players with a career grand slam, which is nuts.
yes i like tennis. fag.
Incredible final at Wimbledon right now.
when is there going to be an american male who can compete at this level
The behind the scenes shots after the match were pretty fascinating. NBC never showed anything like it back when they broadcast the tournament. They used to just disappear into the doorway and you'd never see them again. Also - I thought it was extremely weird that ESPN got the first off-the-court interview with him after the match. You'd think BBC would be all up in that shtein, especially considering he's a Brit. Money talks, I guess.
bbc got the first one...that was the one on the court
espn/nbc have always gotten on the 2nd. on the court/off doesnt matter.

QuoteIt takes some guts to grow out your dreadlocks and wear a sarong in the land of Dixie, except if you're in Asheville, North Carolina because that's pretty typical there. This hippy haven is a southern Shangri-La for lefties, crispers, and those longing for a little more peace and love. While the city has pulled funding for the annual street festival Bele Chere, the town is loaded with farmer's markets, live music, and numerous disc golf courses. For those who are southern-fried, the great city of Asheville is truly the Hippie Capital of the South, as evidenced during the weekly drum circle.

I agree with the California Chrome owner ripping the horses/owners for not running the previous two legs.
I laugh at the media folks ripping him for speaking out too.
Whatever. That never stopped other horses from winning the Triple Crown. And I didn't hear him bitching before the race. Nor did I hear him bitching about how all those horses bailed out of the Preakness, making it much easier for his horse to win it.
He had a slightly above average horse who got exposed like dozens before him at the Belmont.

I think it's a good horse, just not a Triple Crown quality horse. He didn't deserve to win the Crown with the times he put up. A rare award should be for a rare horse.
I thought that roided-up horse Big Brown from a few years ago was Triple Crown quality, but the horse's hooves or shoes were farged up during the Belmont.

Quote from: ice grillin you on June 08, 2014, 01:16:09 PMnothing worse than a sore loser
well, one thing: a sore winner
i guess these have always been the rules but have horses always pulled this kind of move...skipping the first 2 to run the 3rd? did it happen in the 70's?
if its ALWAYS gone down like that then the guy needs to zip it. if its a relatively new thing, then hes got a point. some frog pos swooped in and stole the belmont from him, id be livid too.
It's always been the case that different horses run in different parts of the Triple Crown. The winners have always faced some fresher horses. It is true though that trainers rest horses more overall than they used to, and the two week break between the Derby and Preakness is now considered aggressive for races of that length. Therefore more owners hold their horses out of the Preakness than before. All the horses used to be run a lot harder and in longer races, which might be part of why finishing times have stalled out. So ironically all this pampering that is supposedly creating "fresher" horses isn't improving finishing times, it's just making the horses less tough.
Basically I say who cares how fresh the other horses are. If you want to win the Triple Crown, be prepared to beat all comers. Secretariat would have won it this year as easily as in 1973 (maybe easier since Sham was a strong competitor then), so what's California Chrome's excuse? And of course CC doesn't have to be Secretariat, there have been all kinds of horses that have run all three races and had Belmont speeds good enough to win yesterday.
the triple crown is no different than the golf grand slam....its a series of individual events that some people play in and others don't....it just so happens to take place over 5 weeks instead of over a season
get over it you friggin hack
If you watched the first two races that horse clearly had no chance yesterday. The distance was too much for him. I was shocked he won the Preakness, actually.

heres some ratings shtein:
the game was the highest rated llws broadcast ever on espn
it doubled a red sox/yankees sunday nighter from a few weeks ago

or it points out that a bunch of households that wouldve been watching it on tv were at the game itself.
yea an extra couple thousand people who went to williamsport from philly isnt going to make up 2 ratings points...chances are exactly NONE of those people are even neilsen families
youre just going to have to accept the fact that las vegas cares more about little league baseball than philly does. also gambling. there were lines on these games.
Pitch counts are for Hoydas. There. I said it.

i dont know if the philly team sucks i never said that...but RIF
i suspect they are a middle of the road team not different from a thousand other llws teams
what i do know is that people who know the llws say that vegas is an all time good team...so by the math i know they are waaaay better than philly and they will blow them out if they play again...i would expect nothing less than a mercy rule finish
no doubt this vegas team is damn good but the team gary sheffiled played on would nut kick them blindfolded and i am understating it to be nice. they eventually lost to taiwan in the final but christ they were litterally playing against men.

For the first time in 25 years I went bowling. My daughter wanted to go and she's the boss. Highest score was 162...no lie I think I pulled a groin muscle. Daughter is 7 and bowled a strike frame 9 our last game. Her high score was 82.
Anyway I had a lot more fun then I thought I would so I'm going to try to bowl once a week then maybe join a league
I'm wildly inconsistent the few times I bowl. I've bowled over 200 and under 100 in the same stretch of games. I'm the Joe Cowley of bowling.
Haven't bowled in over a year now.
bowling is so MA....its like the anti golf
Usually when I bowl it's to take the kids somewhere during the hot Florida summer. Only so many air conditioned choices.
Yeah bowling is fun as shtein and I always forget how fun it is until I do it again.
I'm like you Geo...will be over 200 one game and then in the 130s the next.
SD is the Big Ern McKracken of CF!
I haven't bowled in about eight years. My first job ever was at the Bowlarama. Fun times.
The last time I bowled the room was normal lighting and we kept score by cards. Now it's dark, there's laser lights everywhere and the score is automatically kept on the screen.

Late night mofo memory was when you'd tell us bowling stories...pretty sure it was phreak who started calling you Munson and simon_douglas was history
lol yeah back then I was doing summer leagues as a young teen, then as an older teen I started goin with my buddies once or twice a week. Beer pitchers at the bowling alley are cheap as shtein and they don't ID everyone drinking, just the person buying the booze...perfect for a 19/20 year old.
Indeed I was the one who coined the Munson nickname lol
He was always talking about bowling and I was watching King Pin and the rest is history.
when we lived on the army bases I bowled in the kiddie leagues. High score was when I was working at the bowling alley. I nailed a 217 and thought I was the shtein

Bowling was the bomb. I was on the high school team and we could go any time to our home lanes on Stenton Ave and bowl for free, with the school picking it up as practice. We'd party in the car and smuggle in a bottle of rum for our Cokes and go all night on the weekend. Good times, from what I can remember.

People like to say that my body looks masculine, I'm like listen just because my body was developed for a purpose other than farging millionaires doesn't mean it's masculine.
Hands off, polock. She's mine.
How many of the UFC meatheads are happy they paid whatever for this Rousey fight and its going to start after 1am ET?
were you one of them?
shiiit no....I would rather watch lil guy read the Bill James bible than watch UFC
But I do know if Rousey loses it'll be the UFC version of Tyson losing to Douglas as far as the books go.
The chick she is fighting was +1000
Saw that one of the Cantor books in Vegas took a $75k bet on Rousey...if it wins they'll get paid $5k
So its over already...Rousey knocked her out in 34 seconds.
Wonder how much the PPV was for that? I'd be pissed!
It was free for me and she absolutely knocked that loudmouthed Brazilian pre-op tranny's ass into next week.
Stunning combo, temple shot, boom. Nighty night.
As usual, the post-fight comments were more entertaining than the match. She basically said, I guess my hands were better than she thought, and from here on out, it might be a good idea not to mention my family ever again.
I've watched UFC for a long time and tonight was the most crowded I've ever seen it at the Pub. Probably 4-5 deep at the bar, every seat taken, and even the sidewalks outside were packed with fans watching the fight on the patio tv's.
Say what you will but Ronda delivers.

tremendous womens final going right now
these rallys are amazing
serena is amazing.
my first major tennis match in person was wimbledon in 2000, saw venus beat serena in the semis then venus win the finals.
the fact that serena is still dominating 16 years later is just nuts.
The last game of that match was pure Serena. Overpowering domination. Then for good measure she goes back out a couple hours later and wins the Doubles with Venus.
22 Singles Majors.
14 Doubles Majors (14-0 in those, btw).
4 Olympic Golds (1 Singles & 3 Doubles).
71 Career Singles Titles (20 Runner-ups).
Truly the greatest female athlete ever.
how about the greatest athlete period ever
or do you have a soccer player there
I have Michael Jordan there.
Jesse Owens, Jim Thorpe, Jim Brown, Muhammed Ali all say hi
Jordan might crack top 5...he's below all four of those however..
All fine selections but no.
If you can't see that Jesse Owens was a better athlete than one of the best basketball players...all I can say is, proximity bias. You watched Jordan, so you think he's the greatest.
Those guys, Jordan included, were all iconic giant cultural forces in ways that Serena will never be, but in terms of pure athletic dominance over the rest of her sport, Serena is up near the top. Her case is somewhat weakened by Steffi Graf being just about as dominant in her time.
From that list, Jim Brown is the one who strikes me as the most dominant. He tore the sport wide open in a way never seen before or since, and the difference between him and the rest of the league was enormous. Jordan was the best NBA player I've ever seen, but the on-court difference between him and the other superstars was never as enormous as for someone like Brown or Williams.
Jesse Owens had that level of dominance, but it only lasted about a year. Not sure if it's really his fault because that was the nature of track and field in the 30s, but he didn't have the chance to be dominant for an extended period of time like Usain Bolt was able to do recently.
Other ones who come to mind are Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Phelps, and Tiger in his prime.
Jesse Owens was competing against Adolf's finest. He was a spectacular athlete for his time and one of the greatest but Carl Lewis matched his accomplishments. No one will ever come close to Jordan. He's far and away the best pure athlete ever.
Jesse Owens is garbage
just like babe Ruth

I still game so it's funny to hear the little 9 year olds on Call of Duty trying to be pewdiepie while they play.
Wtf is a pewdiepie
He is the most subscribed to person on youtube, something like 50 million+, and his youtube channel is the most viewed of all time, even more than all the biggest music stars you can think of.

He's started making just regular 'comedy' videos at this point based on video games, but for the most part he 'rose to fame' by playing video games and adding his own live commentary.
South park made an entire episode (two episodes?) dedicated to little kids not even wanting to play video games because they'd rather watch other people like pewdiepie play them.

cant possibly ask for anything better than williams/williams and nadal/federer finals.....except that theyre on at 330am
its 3am on a weekend...not like you have to work the next day
i thought federer would get smoked but i give him a fighters chance now that he has an extra days rest...is that a new thing?...i thought the semis were always played on the same day...i hate nadal with a passion but this seems unfair to him
every tournament is different
im sure they set it up that way to sell tickets for each semi, as opposed to putting them together in the same session. the french open/wimbledon are all about tradition and the us open has serena so they dont have to put the men in separate sessions.
and i dont care if its the weekend. im not messing up my finely tuned body clock. 330 is the worst possible time for anything. too late to stay up too early to get up.

You can't make this shtein up.
I don't see how that's even remotely odd. I don't go out of my way to watch tennis, but if I see it on I'll usually watch. I can see why people would love it and it might be one of the best sports to watch on tv. Soccer is completely unwatchable on tv. Maybe it's one of those things that's better enjoyed live, like hockey, racing, and strippers, but it's one of the most unwatchable things to ever be broadcast on television.
He hates the sport that is played by poor people in every slum on the planet and loves the sport that is played by people literally wearing only white as a rule. IGY. You've met him before and know who he is, right?

crazy that some people would like one sport but not another
i enjoy tennis but i by no means love it...really dont even watch it unless its a grand slam which i do love...my post was much more about the greatness of federer than it was touting the sport

Ya'll see this story about Serena being 9 weeks preggo when she won the Aussie Open? She ain't human.
she shouldve got knocked up in the fall...play the us open and miss aussie and french. now she wont be back until the winter.
Women's softball World Series game between Okie and Florida is nuts
B14th now
Not generally a tennis fan, but this deserves at least a mention:
20-year-old Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia becomes first unseeded woman to win the French Open since 1933. (https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-right-kind-of-reckless-and-a-french-open-title-1497118291?mod=e2fb)
Rusty can bang her while he's in Latvia, so she will no longer be unseeded.

Haaa!
I think it's pretty farging suspicious that Rusty is in Latvia and she wins the French Open as the first unseeded winner since 1933.
Explain that ticket to me. What exactly is the bet on?
$2 exacta on the Belmont. 2-7 came in first/second so I won $45.20 on a $2 bet.
A $2 trifecta pulled in $600 for the win because a horse at 12-1 came in third. The trifecta at the Preakness paid $2,200.

wimbledon has gone off the rails
and venus is off
didnt realize konta was a brit until right now
venus won the first fairly easily....if somehow her and federer both won this it would be one of the most amazing sports johnsons ever
its helpful that serena is with child, but what venus has done is unreal
shes older than dirt in tennis years and in the wimby final.
ha
maguruza: so serena isnt even here and i STILL have to face a williams?
That's inane. I went to Wimbeldon in person in 2000 when venus beat lindsey davenport for her first win there. 17 farging years ago.
federer won his first wimbledon when cilic was 15....when george w bush was in the middle of his first term.
what he is doing is impossible
muguruza was 2 when venus won her first. but yes fed is a god.
tiafoe takes the first set off fed
get to a tv
this third set has been ridiculous
some great matches the past few nights but the wrong people won. you wanted to see venus in the final and fed/nadal
sloane and delpotro arent bad consolation prizes though
agree with sloane...i was rooting for venus but sloane is a great consolation prize
farg del potro tho....hes worthless
hes one of the best players in the world when hes healthy, which is never
i think he wins this, though really the final is him/nadal since the other half of the bracket is a farce
sucks for venus that she could win one when the window was open for her. serena might just be back for AO and thatll be it for everyone else
i dont care if hes the best player ever hes unwatchable dreck
his match against the german dude where he came from 0-2 was maybe the best in the tournament. i love him. pure power hitters. like if stanton was a tennis player.
i dont really watch mens tennis unless its federer....hes my tiger woods...but im sure whoever you are talking about is the new jordan speith
madison keys gotta poop
i pay attention to tennis more than the average person and i have never so much as heard of this P. Carreño Busta who will be in the semis tonight

hes not beating amazing competition but he keeps outlasting the best players in the world, who are all younger than him, and keep breaking down. its truly amazing his body has held up like this. hes not human.
I'm not crazy about grown men blubbering but his speech on the podium after he won was pretty cool.
ESPN showed shots of his first major in 2003 and it's pretty amazing to consider how many of his contemporaries are long since retired.

QuoteAfter eight weeks of games and less than one season into its existence, the Alliance of American Football is suspending operations, a source told ESPN on Tuesday, confirming multiple reports.
This league must have been dreadfully financially planned. In terms of the quality of the football, the attention it received, and the attendance, I thought it was doing as well as they could have possibly hoped for.
the tv ratings werent amazing but they were pretty decent all things considered...and really thats what this league is. nobody is ever going to care enough about orlando/atlanta to go, but football on tv draws so

of course im assuming they all are cause they are. mcgregor wasnt even a question. hes an angry tatted up violent psycho.
is there one liberal in or around ufc...how about a moderate
im not talking about looking at his tats (whatever that would mean anyway) and guessing he is one...he has vocalized it by verbally blowing trump...worn maga hats...etc...
my point is how has he been so obvious about it and i never came across it before...if nothing else i should have seen it at least once on the progressive twitter outrage machine

i do know that nobody in left wing twitter world cares about some ufc dude being a maga man. it be like getting angry that a coal miner from west virginia hated blacks

Anyone got some Derby picks today?
degenerate
No I'm sorry there's no horse by that name racing today.
Degenerate Gambler would be a great name for a horse. I assume it would be rejected by the body that approves such things on account of being too fun.
Agreed but if they rejected it you could just call him Eddie Mush after the character in A Bronx Tale
BREAKING: Derby winner Medina Spirit turns down an invitation to Mar-a-Lago. Asked why, he said "If I wanted to see a horse's ass, I would've finished second!"
so does anyone know what happens to the bets if they cancel the KD winner?
I went about 0 for 50 but was real close on a bunch so that would be nice to retroactively win some. I'm assuming bets are final now but have no idea.
If you collected on a winner there's nothing they can do, obviously. I'm pretty sure the tracks are never paying out on a disputed ticket.
I've never heard of one doing that anyway.
I'm sure someone will sue, though. If I had a 25-1 WPS ticket I'd be asking for my dough on the winner, especially if it was wheeled on an exacta, triple or super.
well yeah I am sure people who won won't need to pay it back lol but I'm wondering for those like me who lost, will we have a chance to collect if horse is disqualified? I assume no.
EDIT: Found the answer is no.
QuoteKentucky Horse Racing Commission regulations say payouts are based on "the order of finish as declared 'official' by the stewards or judges."
"A subsequent change in the order of finish or award of purse money that may result from a subsequent ruling by the stewards, judges, or commission shall not affect the pari-mutuel payout."
can't believe that sprinter tried to cheat by smoking weed. I hope she gets hard time.
Honestly this story makes me so angry. How in the world can weed still be on the banned substance list. It took me $100 and about 45 seconds to get my medical mmj card years ago and it's legal in what, half the country right now? girl has trained her whole life.
its especially stupid because weed isnt helping your athletic performance...the only two effects it could have is none and negative...if i am competing in sports i want my opponents to be on the weed
Backwards ass shtein. Republicans still think weed is some gateway drug to people sucking people off for heroin in an alley.
It shouldn't be banned. It's stupid. It's galling that there are corrupt hypocritical organizations like the IOC who enforce idiotic outdated and honestly racist ass restrictions.
That said, don't smoke dope if it's banned. To do so is just dumb.
I'm smoking while working from home today.

can't believe I'm saying this but trump would have dropped all important matters had her out months ago just because it's such a big pop culture story.

I don't know anything about Griner but yeah, I can't see through to how anyone might think it was an acceptable risk to possess illegal drugs in Russia. I conclude therefore that thinking is not this person's main.
She's a big, famous black woman with a huge target on her back in a country where people like her are literally illegal.
