More HUGE storms coming this way....tornado warnings are in effect for the Lancaster area.

If they're anything like Thursday night, it's going to be a long night with my kids. The hail on Thursday (and wind and heavy rain/lightning/thunder) scared the crap out of them.

Is 'tornado warnings' a more recent thing, like last 5-10 years? I don't remember hearing those warnings when I was younger. With every storm it seems they throw out the 'tornado warning' just to cover their ass.

tornado watch = possible severe weather of the type that could cause a tornado
tornado warning = tornado or funnel cloud exists
tornado emergency = dangerous tornado on ground in populated area

Watch and warning have been around for decades, emergency is relatively new (and rare).
