Title: the brag about your sports memorabilia here thread
Post by: Sgt PSN on October 24, 2009, 09:38:42 PM
i'm relatively weak in the memorabilia category.....nothing in comparison to the swapmeet going on in munson's uncle's basement, but the few items i have are pretty good collector's items and ones that i cherish:

post 'em if you got 'em.  pics would be best.

i got the howard bat his rookie year and hopefully can catch him at a show in the future to see if i can get him to inscribe his roy, mvp and ws championship years on it as well.

i've seen igy's collection of jerseys and it's pretty damn awesome.  i wish i had kept the jerseys i bought when i was in my late teens/early 20's that don't fit me anymore.  i think all i have left from those years is a barry sanders and micheal jordan.  had some buddy era jerseys when i was a teen that i passed off to other family members when i got too big.  that was dumb.

that howard bat is awesome.....how big/heavy is it...and i dont mean give me the ounces and length of the bat but just holding it does seem like something captain caveman would bring to the bar

it's a black glomar bat, so compared with other "official" bats, it doesn't hold as much value.  although i don't collect anything with hopes of selling it 20 yrs from now.  it's signed with a silver marker so the signature really jumps off the bat and looks pretty bad ass.  but it is a full size bat with some good weight to it.  the only times i've actually touched it are whenever i move and have to take it out of the case for packing.  but yeah, it feels like a club.

i'll put some pics up tomorrow when i get home from work.

Almost all of my memorabilia I have gotten personally.  The only benefit of living in Florida for me - spring training.  Haven't gotten out the past few years, though.  The cost of having kids.

Most of mine aren't big-ticket items, but ones that have some personal connection to me.

Autographed baseballs:
Robin Roberts (the only one I've bought; is PSA/DNA Certified)
Mike Schmidt (ST)
Ryan Howard (ST)
Harry Kalas (After a Phils-Marlins Game)
Jimmy Rollins (ST)
Warren Spahn (Local appearance at the minor league stadium)
Bob Feller (Local appearance at the minor league stadium)

Maybe my favorite (and at the same time sad) signed ball is Tug McGraw.  He had a crowd around him, telling jokes, laughing, having a great time and holding court.  He looked tan and healthy.  The next week was when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

I have a bunch more baseballs (probably about 100) of various players ranging from Kirby Puckett and Paul Molitor to Minor leaguers that never panned out.  90%+ of the baseballs at least made the major leagues.  The majority of them are from the Phils (due), Twins and Red Sox (they both train in Ft. Myers).  I did get Mark Teixeira athe last year the Rangers trained in Port Charlotte. I knew he was a big prospect and took a chance.

One of my most fun trinkets is probably not worth a dime, but is one of my favorite sports memories.  A pitcher named Brad Thomas for the Ft. Myers Miracle pitched a no-hiter at Port Charlotte (about an hour north of where i live, 30 minutes north of Ft. Myers).  My nephews and I went to the game (before kids, when I could just pick up and go during the summer) on a lark, and were in the crowd of about 50 that actually saw the game (the Miracle draw well in Ft. Myersbut the Charlotte stadium is basically in the middle of nowhere).  I was able to get a ball (not THE ball of course, but one from the game that was fouled off) and my ticket signed.  Thomas did get a cup of coffee in the bigs, but nothing more.  Still, a fun memory for me.

A few other items:
Steve Carlton signed 8X10 (bought)
Greg Luzinski signed bat (in an open house for a local builder who happened to be the father of one of my students)
Mike Schmidt (ST)
Jimmy Rollins (8X10, of a picture I took at a prior ST trip.  Jimmy's Comment:  "Looks like a hit")
Mike Lieberthal (another 8X10 that I took)
Rod Brind'Amour Flyers jersey (for some reason the Hurricanes trained in Ft. Myers a few years)
Jevon Kearse toddler-sized jersey (was my son's, lives locally and made an appearance for the grand opening of the local Bass Pro Shop)
Dr. J card (during college, signed at the local Acme.  Came 15 minutes early and talked with us before signing.)
Reggie White (His "Minister of Defense" book at a bookstore signing)
1998 Clearwater Phillies ball (Has Rollins, Burrell and Eric Valent on it)
Torii Hunter broken bat from ST (autographed)

I have over 1,000 cards autographed, almost all from spring training.

I have a Phillies ST schedule signed by Ed Wade somewhere.

I was a real autograph hound for a few years at the spring training sites, but I've backed way off the past few years, and didn't go to any spring training sites last year (first year since I moved down here in 1993)

One other item I was given by a student last year, and have no idea if it is authentic.  I would lean to no, but this kid would have no knowledge of the people on the ball.  He said that his mom gave it to him.  It is a softball with the signatures of Hillary Clinton, "Pres Huck" and John McCain.  Why he had it, and why he gave it to me (other than being his history teacher) is a mystery to me.

I've never collected to re-sell, just for fun.  I love baseball, and love watching the practices and drills and just being out in the warm Florida February sun for a few hours.  I'm going to try to take my son to one this year.  He may be old enough to appreciate it a little more now.

I have a Barack Obama bobblehead at school that I got last year at the local minor league stadium.

And, Sarge, I had the 1980 Phils yearbook signed by Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Tug McGraw and Dallas Green.  Somehow it got lost.  I was a stupid third-grader, and have no idea what happened to it.  I did buy a yearbook on eBay a few years ago for next to nothing, but it's not the same.

die.  lol.  that's actually a pretty awesome list of stuff.

i hate spending any money at all on autographs because they really don't mean as much if you don't get them in person but seeing as i'm usually anywhere but in/around philly, my only real option is to catch athletes i like at shows and pay their $20-30 fee to sign whatever item i happen to bring.

the astros have a single a affiliate where i live (lancaster jethawks).  maybe i'll start autograph hounding at the games next year and get lucky with 1 or 2 of them some day.

the ken griffey jr auto 8x10 is one of my favs because i was on the color guard for the opening ceremony of a mariners game back in the 90's and griffey came over and talked with us for a few minutes during pre game warms ups and told us to come back down to the field after the game and he'd give us some autographs.  i also spoke with jamie moyer, randy johnson, jay buhner, edgar martinez and tino martinez before the game as well.  griff was the only one to offer an auto.....which was odd because i'd always heard that he wasn't big on giving them out.

the tommy lasorda auto is pretty unique.  he was a friend of my grandfather's so when he came back to norristown after winning the 81 series, my grandfather took me to the dinner to meet him and tommy signed the program for me.

i've also got a (lol) rich kotite auto laying around somewhere.  i worked as a waiter for a catering company while in high school and there was some club/organization from the main line that was having a luncheon and kotite was the guest speaker and he signed the program for me as well.

also have a bob hope auto from another event that i catered but unless you want to consider him a golfer, then i don't think it falls under the sports memorabillia category.

One thing that I used to do was  find out when each team's team card set giveaway night was, and go to those games.  I would drive as far as Clearwater (3 hours away, and the Phils' affiliate, of course), but definitely hit Ft. Myers, Port Charlotte and Sarasota (about 90 minutes).  Get the free set, try to get them signed (not too hard for position players at tehse games, but more difficult with the pitchers in some parks).

I did one stint in a parking lot after a spring training practice (Reds in Sarasota). Ended up getting Barry Larkin, but I hated it and never did it again.

Closest I got to getting Griffey was him stepping on my nephew's foot walking to the field (not as many barricades then).  He never signed for a soul when I was there.

My favorite of all my memorabilia is the Reggie White Rookie card i have and the Jerome rookie card both signed at a show when i was a kid.  My bro has Jerome's rookie card signed.  Jerome was a god, dude just loved talking to kids, and talked to my bro and i for at least 5 mins.

I have a ton of shtein, but those mean the most since i got them autographed in person.

GOddamn I havn't looked through anything in my collection in so long. I mostly have baseball cards. I do have an Eagles kelly green baseball hat signed by Randall, but that's about it. I know I have a Piazza rookie card and Chipper Jones rookie card, but neither are signed. I have a Willie Mays card too that is supposedly signed, but I doubt it's authentic.

ANd yes, as sarge mentioned, most of the good shtein is up at my dads and uncles. Autographed game worn spikes/jerseys, helmets, pictures with players autographed, etc. The vet turf is my favorite though, just because it's so damn thin. Players weren't lyin when they said it was like playin on a concrete with a piece of carpet put down on it.

I have nothing and I'll keep it that way. As much as I enjoy football, there's no way I'd put any of the players on enough of a pedestal to keep their signed crap. Just don't care.

here's a few pics of my stuff.  most of it is in the den that i'm renting and there's a nice wall to wall/floor to ceiling set of built in book shelves that are great for displaying stuff.  mostly it's just goofy stuff, but there are a few butter joints in there.

lol.....i was waiting for someone to comment on that.  the couch, as ugly as it is, is the most comfortable couch i've ever sat/slept on.  plus it's got a pull out bed which is great for over night guests.  it was my grandparents that they bought back in the 60's or something, which explains the awful pattern/colors.  when i retire in a few years i plan on having it reupolstered to something a little easier on the eyes.  don't see the point in spending the money on it now while i'm still moving every couple of years.

I have a program insert from Phillies spring training that Richie Ashburn & Harry Kalas both signed.  It's fading like a motherfarger now but it's still a hell of a piece of memorabilia for me.  I doubt anyone outside of Philly would give a shtein about either signature but I dig it.

re:  the love couch - i don't think that couch has ever actually been shagged on.  it sat in a "formal" living room in my grand parents house that never got used and for as long as i've had it, it's mostly been in my office/den and rarely used.  it's a 40 year old virgin.

The only really cool thing I have is a bootleg NFL Films copy of an Eagles/Packers game I went to a few years ago. At one point some freak ran out onto the field, and with his hand was spreading this powdery shtein around. He went right by Favre with it.

Turns out it was his dead mother's ashes. They wouldn't show it on TV but I got a copy from the truck feed with the whole thing on it. Probably not more than 2 or 3 copies exist outside of the NFL film vault. The tape even comes in an official NFL Films box. God bless the dude that got me that, same guy that got me great SB 39 tix in JAX at face, with a bunch of other excellent free perks. I also got a couple of Eagles SB 39 World Champion tee shirts I bought for $5 each off a guy out the back of a truck after the game.

That was just the good shtein that I had time to get pictures of. There's tons of signed shtein on the walls that people just bring as gifts to add to the room..mostly players no one cares about, Michael Lewis, CBuck, LJ Smith, etc...guys like that. But even all the corny trinkets and shtein...if it's Eagles, they want it/will get it. Kind of an obsession.

So "Tony Luke's Eaglemania" went to the place better known here as the Rape Basement the other week. No idea how to post flash so that it works, but it's on the Eagles multimedia page (http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/multimedia/index.asp?mm_file_id=9105&play_clip=y). Just go there, click the "shows" tab and scroll over til you get to videos 49-60. My crazy weekend at bernies lookin Uncle is the bottom left corner titled "Tony Luke's Eaglemania week 09 Locker Room". Lots of white people, lots of potential MA jokes, but even better looks at some of the awesome Eagles shtein he's got.

Edit-The old guy in the Eagles cutoff dancing about 2 minutes in, I'm pretty sure is a judge in the city of Reading :-D

Never been banned from here. I have been banned from a few places but never a message board.

Anyway, what are you so upset about? Our generations didn't invent sexual escapades. Here's a true story. When my wife's grandmother died about 15 years ago, she was around 82 years old. That means she was born in like 1912 or so. So I got the job of emptying out her house so we could sell it. In the master bedroom closet, I found a box with handcuffs, a ballgag, assorted didlos, a butt plug, a strap on, swinger magazines from the 60s and 70's and a ton of 8mm stagg films. Seems the wife's grandparents were into ATM, and blumpkins. Up until that time I could never imagine things like that going on with old folks. So, really you have to look at your grandparents differently, maybe they enjoyed the occasional Dirty Sanchez.

If you take offense to any of this, I sincerely apologize.

It's a hobby. Memorabilia in general is what I enjoy and autos are a small part of that for me. Some of the autographs I got for free and some I had to pay for at a show or something. I've seen a few athletes/celebs in public and have had quick conversations with them but never asked for their autograph....just seems a bit tacky to do that on their personal time. Ifi catch them at a game or a show, great. Otherwise, no big deal.

BigEd, aka "Ebay Dude", thanks to Freddie Mitchell is an autograph guy.

I was when I was younger...anyone wanna buy Rodney Peete or Jay Fiedler and Mark McMillian?

My boy is a huge autograph guy. He is a regional manager for a sporting goods store so he has hookups and also travels to all signings and stuff between Austin, San Antonio and DFW. He made over $5k in profit last year in selling stuff on ebay.

Good for him, but people who buy and sell auto'd memorabilia on eBay need to be shot.  I'll never understand the point of spending that much money on a signature when you didn't even get it from the guy yourself. I might be a sucker for spending 30 or 40 bucks every now and again (which is why I don't have many autos)  to get the auto at a show but at least I'm meeting the guy and watching him sign it.  Spending $200 on a signed ball on eBay is beyond retarded.

i was with lawrence frank once and some guy came up to him and asked for his auto...coach said "this is going right on ebay, isnt it?"...the guy answered that it was and he refused to sign it. it was probably the best thing he ever did while with the nets.

i dont think they are the worst or best...the throwback green and the eagle are awesome...but im not a big fan of the strips on the neck...and the united nations looking eagle patch on the arm is god awful

and price wise those arent bad...i think 125-150 maybe?....

i dont think they sell their 450-600 line of jackets anymore...i guess they were just too expensive....i bought a $600 one of them in the linc lot a few years ago for a hundred bucks....it was monsterous like a 58 or something but i paid the dry cleaner 40 bucks to shorten it....best deal i ever got...they are amazing....

i also have a ridiculously nice philles one that my girl paid 550 for one year...i almost slapped a chicklet out of her mouth when i opened it i was so mad

Article on the recent counterfeit busts at local flea markets: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101230/ap_on_bi_ge/us_flea_market_fakes

The article itself is okay, the comments that ensue are spot on and hilarious:

QuoteBullcrap, this article is nothing more than the media schilling for big business. For example: Just about every computer you buy comes from Taiwan. Companies like Dell or Acer just slap their name on the box and it's suddenly "brand name" and not a "knockoff". All of these recalls for supposedly safe products, everything ranging from toys and food to cars and appliances. And we're to believe that big business wares are the trustworthy route?

All they want you to do is be afraid to give money to the little guy trying to make it and keep funneling cash to them so they can keep buying Yachts and Mansions.

You know it's nothing more than a scare tactic when they say: "Terrorism".

Shoot, buying gas at your local station funds terrorism because most oil comes from the Middle East. Buying Chinese products from Walmart supports communism.

Where are the reports telling us not to buy from Shell or Walmart?

Quoteterrorist don't need to sell sunglasses and handbags, compared to what the US and the CIA pay out, it is chump change. It interests me to know that 1000 items or more carry a jail sentence. We just had a local guy who molested his 6 daughters for 10 years and he got probation and a fine. Glad he wasn't wearing "knock off" oakley sun glasses while he was doing it or he would have got 10 years. most of these vendors are hard working, they pay rent, and sales tax. couldn't we find more constructive things to do with the police department. all of the name brand crap is made in China anyway!!!!!!

QuoteIf the flea market fake merchants gave kickbacks to the authorities they would not have a problem.

The title of the article should read "politicians angry about not personally profiting from flea market fake merchandise, send law enforcement officers to deal with the issue".

Aside from the Phillies Today that I found, I also dug up a few old Eagles Yearbooks, an 86 Eagles team photo and a 93/93 calendar book thingy.  Phillies Today is pretty beat up.  I taped the Eagles team photo to my wall when I was a kid and all 4 corners peeled whenever I took it down.  Eagles yearbooks and the calendar are all in really good shape though.

those are awesome...especially the team photo one...i have a bunch of yearbooks and programs from all the teams but i dont get into them as much as i used to....now you can just google any info you want....one of the downsides of the internet....i do like to occasionally flip thru them tho for the pictures and also the advertisments are pretty cool to look at

i dont know if anyone remembers them but the trading card companies for i think one year or maybe two made these magnets....the front looks just like a football card but the back doesnt have player stats its a magnet....i got a bunch from the gang green days....i love them shteins

now go find me some OG gear or glasses and post them so i can decide if i want them or not

Spent a bunch of weekends at spring training sites in the 1990s on an autograph binge with my nephews.  Have baseballs for a crap-ton of players (Daulton, Dykstra and a lot of the 1993 Phils).  For some reason, a lot of older players would come to the minor league stadiums then (got George Foster and Rollie Fingers this way).  Since I've had my own kids (or it could just be hitting my 40s), I just don't have the desire to do that anymore.  Only hit one spring training practice this year, and didn't bring anything to sign.  I have over 100 signed baseballs around the house.

Still have my Calvin Williams football from college.  Got Jevon Kearse mini-helmet because he still has family down here and worked with a local youth program down here.  Tommy McDonald did a show down here and I was able to get him on the cheap (I may have been the only one in line to know who he was).

Got my old Brind'Amour sweater signed when he was with the Canes - they trained in Ft. Myers a few years when he first joined the team.  It hangs in the family room collecting dust.

My favorite piece of "memorabilia" may be a picture of myself and my nephews with Johnny Pesky.  He was a fixture at Red Sox spring training (they are within five miles of my school).  He loved to sit and just talk baseball, and was as nice as could be to everybody.  It was his idea to take the picture with us.

Being a pack-rat, I still have a ton of magazines.  Old Baseball Digests, Eagles yearbooks, Phillies yearbooks and the like.  Haven't gone through them in years.

Nah, I'm not.  But they're all over ebay.  I'm thinking about trying to get a yearbook going all the way back to my birth year so I checked ebay and there was no shortage of them at all.

I also looked for team photos but the only thing I could find appeared to be some guy who had a bunch of them from different years that he was scanning, printing and selling for like $8.00.  I'll pass on them.

I was filling a big trash bag with old button down work shirts to give to Goodwill the other day, for shteins and giggles I took pictures of a few and put them on ebay. They all sold and the lowest I got for any of them is $5 plus whatever shipping costs. This weirds me out to no end that people will buy used shirts but I guess there's a buyer for everything. Probably already done because I'm not even sure it's worth $5 to wrap shtein and bring it to the post office but for something like those glasses you'd make some solid cash.

I've seen individual glasses like the ones I just bought selling for like $10 a pop.  Dude probably couldn't have sold the entire lot for $120, but I'd be willing to bet he could have easily gotten 50 or 60 bucks for them.  T-hawk already proved that.

juans first card was in 1984 and if you look there is only two players that i see (ozzie and luis aguayo) on there that have cards after 83....99% of it is 80-83.....not sure why

I still dabble with cards here and there, but I don't farg with the new stuff that much.  Now I'm just filling out older sets and gathering up as many Phillies/Eagles/Sixers cards as I can find/afford.  Anything more "modern" (say post 1995) is limited to Philly players and a few select favorite non-Philly guys.

Do they need even need permission?  They're just reprinting their own property.  And I'm sure they'd be obligated under the original agreement to send him his cut.

Was 99% sure I didn't have any current Eagle jerseys. I'm unpacking some boxes and come across a Graham #54 jersey. Don't remember buying it but it's definitely a China special.

On that note, this is such a "Philly thing" to say. Was talking to a co-worker the other day about how awful Jersey is and that if it weren't for the shore, I'd probably never set foot in that state again. He said "you can always go to Ocean City, MD" and I said "That ain't the farging shore."  He was very confused.

I painted houses when I was 14.One house in particular was in a wealthy neighborhood. This is 25 years ago, but the owner had a room full of autographed photos. Some were Philly athletes, some were boxing like Ali. Always wanted something similar. I'm not married so I can do whatever the farg I want, and I live in a 3 bedroom townhouse. So at the end of my living room I have a bar. I have a bunch of Eagles/Flyers/Phillies/Sixers stuff up, but I wanted to add some autographs. Over the past year I've been collecting autographed photos, some of these I've bought, others were given as presents. Each team has their own wall.

Sixers
16 x 20 autographed pic of the Doc
11 x 14 #3 with a bunch of pics of AI in the 3, signed by AI
Wilt Chamberlain stamp plaque
8 x 10 autographed Barkley photo...he's being guarded by Jordan
11 x 14 autographed pic of Moses

Eagles
8 x 10 autographed pic of Buddy Ryan talking to Reggie (autographed by Buddy)
8 x 10 autographed pic of Vermeil talking to Jaws (autographed by Vermeil)
8 x 10 autographed pic of Randall
8 x 10 autographed pic of Westbrook
8 x 10 autographed pic of Bednarik laying out Gifford
8 x 10 autographed pic of Eric Allen
8 x 10 autographed pic of Shady
16 x 20 autographed pic of Dawkins coming out o the tunnel

Flyers
16 x 20 autographed pic of Clarke
11 x 14 autographed pic of Ghost
8 x 10 autographed pic of Hextall
16 x 20 autographed lithograph of Primeau scoring against the Pens in 5 OT
8 x 10 autograph of Gagne and Forsberg

Phillies
8 x 10 autograph of Ashburn in a nice plaque with his HOF stuff
8 x 10 autograph of Jimmy
8 x 10 autograph of Lefty
8 x 10 autograph of Schmidt
16 x 20 autograph of Lidge on his knees after the world series wins

I have a bunch of other Philly stuff like the stadiums/team symbols/plaques around the photos.

When I'm not feeling too lazy I'll post some pics.

its on 12th and chesnut and the stock is quite limited for philly gear, specifically. theres tons of stuff overall but only a handful for each philly team

they might still be doing a discount on winter gear, like scarfs and hats (i got a flyers and sixers jawn over the course of the summer), but those dont seem to be useful commodities in the hellhole that is houston

you should also park south of washington for free to not give those villainous funholes at ppa any money but its going to be a sauna this weekend and walking a mile might not be appealing, so do what you will

Yeah it went from his rec room which was about the size of a very large living room, to my dad's finished basement which is bigger and has a bar and and a ton of TVs and all that, and then my Uncle had that addition built so they could have two different game watching parties every sunday. Obviously nicer there than the basement since the room was built specifically for that purpose lol.

The amount of memorabilia they have between the two rooms is insane. What's even crazier is if the team ever went back to the old colors, they could replace most of the midnight green stuff with older stuff that they keep in storage. Wouldn't be as much because so many people have been gifting them things in the new colors, but they'd prob catch up soon enough.

Dunkin Donuts is starting some new "go hard go big" promotion or something like that, and since they'd already worked with my uncle and his place in the past, they decided to use him and his eagles room as the 'face' of the campaign around here, more or less. So if you see any Dunkin Donuts ads on social media or elsewhere with an insane looking italian guy decked out in eagles gear  in a giant eagles memorabilia room...that would be him.

He also said apparently the DD people brought a video from Ertz (and an autographed football) saying he's heard about the room (probably from Dorenbos, who's been a repeat attendee for pregame specials and the like) and wants to visit some time. Would be a lot cooler if Ertz actually decides to be great outside of weeks 15-17.

When I clicked on the link I though it was going to say Gang Green with this image:

Picture was taken in 91' and I know Buddy was gone by then, but they were still referred to as Gang Green.

that was buddys defense even after he was gone

I wouldn't even call the new defense gang green if they won a SB. No matter what they accomplish, there's no Jerome Brown, no Reggie White or Seth Joyner on this or any other team. The don't even have a playmaker like Allen much less the identity of Gang Green. Those days are gone and you won't see a coach or collection of personalities with that talent level again. It's AO1 or bust, fellas.

91 without Buddy was somehow the purest, most legendary expression of what Buddy had been doing for years. It was definitely still Gang Green. Already great defense going to the stratosphere level. Already poor offense losing Randall and even Randall's backup for four critical games. I don't think an offense that bad has ever won 10 games, especially against the level of competition the Eagles faced in the early 90s NFC East. Made the Warren Moon offense look like scared high school students playing against grown men.

Calling the 2017 group Gang Green I think started with some player like Jalen Mills who doesn't necessarily know the history. And obviously the Jets used it even before the Buddy Eagles.

Did you go begging advice on an internet forum to get help figuring out what that fee should be, or do your Jew powers just give you natural command of that kind of thing.

Also, what's the fee.

Title: Re: the brag about your sports memorabilia here thread
Post by: Diomedes on March 15, 2018, 09:14:02 PM
Well I know this guy IGY who lives south of me and goes there a lot, so the original plan was that he would grab them and drop them off in Baltimore, where I live.

But he may not be in Philly for a while.

So I probably won't get them anytime soon.

And that's alright, really, because no one wants to hire me and I could just as well hang on to my $75 for now.

Anyone collect cards?

I started getting back into it during Covid after about 20-25 years away, but have really gotten back into over the past few months.  Brought a couple boxes back from PA when I visited, and started logging them into an app, and then it went downhill from there, immediately hooked again.

It's wild how different it is - like 79 different versions of each card - varying colors, autographs, patches etc.  It almost feels more like gambling than card collecting, trying to find that rare hit.

As an adult with money to spend it's pretty dangerous, I think I am already addicted. Biggest pull lately was a Pat Mahomes card that's going for $900 on eBay.

I have a shtein ton in boxes. My dad started collecting again recently, he uses this app called Collx...you can scan the card or whatever and get a price. A lot of people advertise cards for sale too. I noticed a lot of value is tied up in the grade of the card now.
Title: Re: the brag about your sports memorabilia here thread
Post by: phattymatty on May 31, 2023, 03:05:56 PM
Haha nice CollX is what I use also.  Pretty cool app.

And yes grading is huge - seems to be a racket to be honest - monopoly of only a few companies, PSA, Beckett and a small handful of others.  But the price can go up exponentially if they give it a 10.

One thing I have learned is that most of my old cards are from the early 90s, which is apparently the least expensive era of cards because that was the big card boom.  Cycle has just started repeating over recently.
