I think $4.5M/yr is too much for a 31 yr old blocking TE.

In all fairness he might be their second best receiver after Ertz.

I agree. He's a pretty decent blocker and I get the idea of wanting some continuity when they will have lots of other holes to fill. But if they want to spend that kind of money to block and protect the QB they'd be better off putting it towards a good guard.

When have the Eagles done anything right?
Well they did back down and allow us to bring in sandwiches after hoagiegate, despite the dire risk to fans lives from terrorists.

yeah that's a problem....a problem that is not solved by giving an old player 6 mil

when you open up the bank for the starting te you pretty much should go with a cheap young guy as your back up

I would have been fine with Burton as backup.

Celek looked like the easiest $5 million for the team to clear, even moreso after locking up Ertz. I am sure that Howie has rigged this deal so Celek's cap hit is now half of what it was, so it's not a total disaster, but they could have had the full $5 mill and I'm doubtful that Celek would have been that missed.

Beginning to wonder a little more strongly if they plan on clearing cap by cutting JP. Or is this some kind of bullshtein signal about being anti-Chip by not cutting respected Eagle vets? Is DeMeco coming back too?

General_Failure

The guys they definitely can't afford to cut for cap reasons this season are Maxwell, Ertz, Murray, Kendricks, and Brandon Graham. They could free up about $6 mil by cutting Peters. Sanchez and Cooper will probably both go to free up a couple mil each. Cox almost has to have a new deal, but who could blame him if he decided to ride it out for a bigger payday with a better team?

The man. The myth. The legend.

QB Eagles

Not sure Sanchez is gone unless the team is comfortable with a late round rookie as a backup. Even signing a zesty vet QB plus signing bonus isn't going to be hugely cheaper. Maybe they can get a Mike Glennon type.

If Cooper doesn't go, sound the alarms.

General_Failure

I don't see any point in keeping Celek if they want to go into this season with Buttfumble out there.

unless they were a SB contender there's no point in celek and even then there probably isn't

really for any money celek is a waste at this stage of his career if you have a highly paid starter ...an extension five minutes after signing that starter makes no sense

Hmmm, moves being made before the epically thorough &  exhaustive life changing search for a head of personnel guy was completed ?

Diomedes

I'm not saying this contract is a great idea, or that the money is well spent--what the farg do I know about that nerd bullshtein--but all of a sudden Celek can't catch?  He's a blocking specialist?

If homers let their love for the team color everything rosy, then this is a fine example of the opposite.  Don't let your hate for the deal or the man confuse the facts.  Celek can block and catch.

Susquehanna Birder

Yep...blocking and catching. And a known quantity. It also doesn't hurt that he's enthusiastic about the job, and that he can lead by example. He's certainly not a world beater, but keeping him around is a good thing.

The only think I really like about Celek is that he's a tough SOB.

So over $10 mill for the TE position which so far has been mediocre.

im not an ertz fanboy by any means but hes gotten better every year hes played to the point where last year where from weeks 5 thru 17 he was 2nd in the nfl in te receptions and yards and he missed two of those weeks...his trajectory is way up right now...so I have no problem with his deal

celek on the other hand could literally be done...like this season...but even if he isn't hes a back up te and you don't need to be giving back up te's in their 30's extensions...is it a horrible thing like they did with the rb's last year no...more just a completely unnecessary thing...theres other spots that are going to open up but a perfect example is cedric thorton...theres a very good chance he walks...id rather have that money to put towards a quality 3rd DT than a back up te...and the eagles aren't exactly overflowing with cash these days

the quotes from Howie after the celek signing basically say that they kept him because hes a quintessential eagle not because of what he may do on the field
