theres a lot of numbers here but the gist is having a super progressive candidate doesnt necessarily mean the moderates wont come with them. bernie has his faults just like biden and pete do. but the moderates are going to eat each other, bernie has won the progressive vote and we all know where this is going.

you can fight it and complain about but its happening. i didnt want it anymore than you did but here we are. time to go.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

biden the candidate has faults....just straight up as a candidate he would be near the bottom of my list...but as far as getting a complete (not full but complete) coalition together he is by far the best candidate...his negatives are that some segment of the bernie bros will not show up/vote for trump but other than that he would at worst be fine in all other areas....where as every other candidate has big negatives...it would make me sick to my stomach if he somehow won the nom but i woud even put bloomberg ahead of bernie in a general as far as being able to get the most people to vote for him

in the iowa caucuses for example the candidate that got the most votes from 2012 obama/2016 trump voters was biden and it wasnt even close

I'd have to check those numbers.

But Biden would have a hard time getting young voters out, especially young black voters, the same group that stayed home when Hillary was the candidate

I think it's a fallacy that Bernie is going to turn out voters needed to win in November.

I am, to put it mildly, very connected in Bucks County politics at this point.  The reason the democrats won the county is they turned Lower Makefield, Newtown, and Doylestown on their heads from where they were 4-8 years ago.   Those areas are where you see the affluent college educated suburban voters.  Now, Bucks isn't representative of the entire country, and I agree Bernie will run ahead of the other candidates in the 18-29 bracket, but the "coalition" or the math to beat trump is predicated on those type of voters going heavy blue.  You see the numbers in NH where the Buttigieg and Klobuchar towns had a much larger cycle over cycle increase in the last 4 years than the Bernie towns.  It's for the reason stated above.

Anecdotally you run the risk of losing people like my dad.   He's in his 70s.  Public school teacher forever.  Big democrat.  Door knocks etc.  Said to me yesterday he will vote for any dem against trump but wasn't sure he could pull a lever for Bernie.  I think he would push comes to shove but if you have an incredibly solid blue voter like that waffle, coupled with math in the other areas where we do see increase turnout (center/left areas), I just don't buy that Bernie has the math to be a real threat to Trump.

people also confuse bernies base being composed of a large % of young people with bernie being able to get out young people in droves which just isnt true

i dont really even get what bernies massive positives are in a general...that he can get a few socialists out that normally wouldnt vote?

his negatives far outweigh that

hillary clinton got three million more votes than trump...you dont need to reinvent the voting block wheel this year to win...getting radical can only lose it for you not win it....the coalition to win is there just on the hatred of trump alone...bernie keeping people like your dad home and blacks and suburban women far surpasses the numbers of bernie bros that there are

The thing is, the new educated suburban people are...millennials. And they are far less likely to run away scared from a Bernie candidacy.

Bernie also appeals to WWC union workers. You lost all of them to Trump in 2016, and you're not getting a lot of them back because it turns out they're pretty racist. But you can get the non-racist ones back with a candidate with a good record on labor rights.

Bernie precincts in NH still increased in turnout by 12% over 2016. Feels pretty safe to say that simply having a bigger field with more diverse options and a sure fire winner (everyone knew HRC was winning the nomination in 2016) helped increase turnout overall, not nearly enough info to assume that the increase in Pete and Amy townships is purely the (mythical) moderate voters that will simply not turn out for Bernie in the general.

And Bernie is currently the leading candidate among latino voters and black voters 18-29. He's starting to eat into Biden's black voter share overall. He won the (very few) black voters in Iowa and NH. It's silly to pretend he only appeals to white people at this point.

igy's last two posts are so on the money

I'd vote Bernie because of my disdain for Trump but he has zero shot of beating Trump. Hillary couldn't get the minority vote and that cost her the election. Biden checks that box. I really think the young voters and Dems who sat out last election don't sit the sidelines this time around. Trump is a lightning rod for waking voters up...combine that with a lot of voters (all of us) thought Hillary had it in the bag and there's your higher turnout.

9/10 pete voters said they would vote for whoever the nominee is

i just dont see massive proof of a giant backlash to bernie. there is going to some from affluent dems in the burbs who flipped in 18, sure. but the polling thus far suggests most people will vote for whoever the nominee is, unless its not bernie, then you lose a quarter of his lunatic base

and this is all moot anyway. bernie is going to be the nominee. i dont see another scenario unless the dem machine steals it from him in milwaukee. pete and amy are running 0 with minorities, bloomberg is horrendous and biden's campaign is a farce. he literally has zero organization.
