Helicopters are not the safest way to fly.

Probably depends on how you measure it. Helicopters are more often doing dangerous things near the ground, like fighting fires, evacuating people, or zigzagging through terrain for tourists. I don't think there's much difference in safety when flying straight-line from helipad to helipad with a trained pilot. A lot safer than driving, I'm sure.

I can't think of too many celebrities who have died in chopper crashes, which is surprising since they are in them quite often. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Colin McRae (who was piloting), Gary Powers (who was piloting), who else?

Everyone has lost someone close, so it's natural to feel empathy for those left behind.

But going to his high school gym to leave flowers?  That's just strange.  I've never dissolved into hysterics over the death of a stranger.

So no, you're not the only dead-inside robot, MDS.

if you're a fan of the nba, you've followed kobe since he was a teenager...so it's natural to mourn his death...the fact that his daughter passed as well makes it even more tragic...well, if you're an actual human.
Title: Re: Dead In 2020
Post by: Geowhizzer on January 27, 2020, 08:40:43 AM
Is it the same as losing one of my own?  No, not quite, but when you follow someone's career for a long time, psychologically you grow a bond with the person, so there will be a sense of loss even if you did not truly know them personally.

For me, Harry the K had more of a sense of personal loss because of the degree to which my childhood fandom was tied to his voice.  With Kobe, it's more of a "wow" because of his youth and the more unexpected manner of death, as well as empathy for the families involved and their tragic loss.

pretty much

Celebrity deaths that have a holy shtein effect on me are few and far between. But this is one where it shook me especially since his daughter was with him.

I found out while paying to park at the Houston Auto Show and the attendant told me. Everyone there was talking about it.

Hate the Lakers. Was never a Kobe fan. Was shocked he died so suddenly, especially with what happened the night before. I appreciate his place in basketball history. He farged up in the past but I grew to like him as a person. He was a huge Eagles fan and was a great father. The video of him celebrating holding his daughter after the birds won the SB showed he was just like us (he won 5 NBA championships and was still going nuts). Shame his daughter and other teens were onboard.
Title: Re: Dead In 2020
Post by: QB Eagles on January 27, 2020, 10:40:23 AM
I think Reggie was maybe the last shock sports death of someone with that elite stature inside his game. There have been shock deaths of young stars (Sean Taylor, Jose Fernandez), and guys who were Hall of Famers but not quite legends (Doc, Junior Seau). This is like a Clemente or Earnhardt type deal where the whole sport is paralyzed by an all-timer suddenly snatched away, and the NBA in 2020 is bigger worldwide than any of these other leagues were when they lost the big name.

I also find it odd how people react to celebrity deaths but it's an extension of how odd people act about celebrity lives.

I'm usually pretty dead inside, especially when it comes to celebrity deaths, but this one definitely hits harder than most. Did not expect to be so sad.  Maybe it was the age, we were in the same grade and a few months apart.
Title: Re: Dead In 2020

The thing that really gets me about it is how I found out from a non-sports kid, so I guess he did have a little reach outside the basketball world.

Other than that, it's weird to hear that somebody your own age is dead. He was in high school like 25 miles from where everybody in my high school was talking about him going pro. Now I'm wondering if any of those people are dead.

Tragic, absolutely.  Sad for his family and the other families dealing with this but is all this worship over the fact he was amazing at putting a round bouncy ball into a cylinder or he was an incredible person?  I never had anything against him, despise the Lakers but always respected Kobe.

Strange, while watching Lebron surpass Kobe Saturday night for some strange reason I googled Kobe's reaction to the Eagles winning the Super Bowl.  It was pretty awesome as it was verbatim how we all reacted to the last hail mary - fear, panic, anxiety, shock, ecstasy.

This got me thinking about deaths/events where you will always remember where you were or what you were doing when you found out. I think this will be one for me.

I thought back and this is what I recall

Challenger explosion - 1st grade class watching the feed
Jerome Brown - flipping through channels and seeing a clip of Reggie crying
Roy Halladay - got a text from a customer while at work
Heath Ledger - walking the strip in Vegas
Philip Seymour Hoffman - putting in SB bets in Vegas at the SuperBook
9/11 - in bed but woken up by a phone call to put the news on - had it on about 10 minutes before the second plane hit
Tupac - just started my senior year and this was a Friday night so we found out after our football game
Columbia explosion - hungover laying on my mom's couch and heard what I thought was artillery practice on the base - but it was the shuttle
Michael Jackson - driving home from dinner with my ex
Harry Kalas - on my way to an appointment and had to cancel and go home

You remember a lot more of those than I do.

Challenger - Lunch line in HS. I was in Freshman Earth and Space Science and my teacher was inconsolable.
Jerome Brown - First summer in Florida (parents had just moved down), summer job at Cheeburger Cheeburger.  Washing dishes for the umpteenth time that day.
Roy Halladay - At school.  Student told me.
9/11 - Standing in the front of my classroom.  Student first told me "a plane hit the WTC," but I didn't believe him.  Verified it at lunch.
Columbia - Driving into a shopping center with my wife, heard it on the radio.  At first I thought they were re-hashing the Challenger until I had listened for a few minutes.
Harry the K - At home, on Spring Break and turned on the TV to catch the game.

Not a death, but I heard about Reagan being shot getting on the school bus to get home.  4th grade.

QuoteEdmonton Oilers forward Colby Cave died Saturday morning after suffering a brain bleed earlier in the week. He was 25.

Cave was airlifted Tuesday to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and had been in a medically induced coma after having emergency surgery to remove a colloid cyst that was causing pressure on his brain.

i dont know if anyone here other than maybe dio has been but theres an all time HOF bar in NYC called jimmys corner....its a perfect dive...one of my favorite bars in the world...the owner jimmy was a former corner and cut man for some semi famous boxers and only allowed soul music on his juke...i cant count the amount of times ive been there over the years but everytime i was jimmy was there to greet me and anyone else that would come in...the greatest thing about the place might have been that it was in times square...places like jimmy dont exist in times square anymore but his somehow did...

anyway jimmy took the covid L the other day....really sad

Gibson started 482 games in his career.  He completed 255 of them.  His 1.12 ERA in 1968 was astounding but his 13 shutouts was even more impressive.  Think about that.  13 shutouts.  My god.

more impressive was in 68 he made 35 starts and was never pulled from a game other than to be pinch hit for

My dad used to tell me stories about watching him at Connie Mack.  The reverence he spoke with about Gibson was something else.  I'm sorry I missed out on his prime.  I would have loved to have seen him in person.
