im not even close to a billy bean type guy and wouldnt say dont EVER bunt like a lot of seam heads do but overwhelmingly bunting is a stupid strategy...youd do best to just get that idea out of your arguments because it devalues everything else you say especially to nerds

and baseball was more "fundamental" in the past because the players werent as good.....bat control is harder to pull off when the ball is coming at you 10 mph faster...its the same old timers argument in the nba...the players in the 80's were so much more fundamental...well of course they were because they werent as talented

I don't even want bunting all the time. But there are times when situations dictate a bunt getting laid down and half these fools look like idiots trying to do it. Better yet - when they have an extreme shift on against them and they stupidly swing away and either ground right into the shift or strikeout trying to yank one.

Rizzo, who Maddon moved to lead off, laid a bunt down the other day in this situation and I about cried tears of joy.

ok tony gwynn...you go up there adjust to a 98 mph fastball. tons of adjusting to that.

rizzo probably did this on his own and hes a farging idiot. hes a great hitter swinging a hot bat and he intentionally recorded an out. it was very stupid.

And the bigger picture says that even if the out is recorded, not necessarily by Rizzo but any hitter bunting against the shift, it sets them up for future hits as they may not shift against the hitter the next time...or not shift as extreme.

and if you want to talk about hitting against a shift, talk about your hero choke who never not once hit the ball the other way on the ground. did wonders for his career.

im not saying you are wrong but is there numbers to back this "bigger picture" up....the shift is relatively new and bunting has been on the outs for a while...is there really a large enough sample size to support this...plus the people tracking this would have to actually notate that the next time this person was up in that exact situation that the shift wasnt as extreme...

also it would be such a rare occurrence and mostly unsuccessful that i think even with a shift on the defense would welcome a bunt try every time
