I think his definition of the word differs from yours. 

I've known people who were intensely devoted to their faith.  Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, Jews...you name it.   They weren't zealots.  Zealots, in my view, do harm because of their faith, or frankly, in the case of militant atheists, because of their lack of it.
