we as a country dont give a shtein about international basketball. we throw a team together at the last minute. the other countries have a set team that plays together a lot and most importantly really want to play for their country. its the pinnacle of their basketball careers. in america, it barely registers.
Yeah the American players don't care.
Pretty sure Comcast/NBC's billions are the only reason these games are even being played, so if half the USA athletes underperform and the other have to sit out because of Covid, it's just desserts.
Oh right. Hello women's beach volleyball. I forgot all about you.
It's a beautiful thing.
I got peacock for a month just for the olympics thinking it would be some sort of on-demand where I could watch any event I wanted to - but other than the mens bball game yesterday morning, I have yet to see the option to watch anything live. what a scam.
Yeah I don't know what is live and what is not. And watching on NBC in the evening is frustrating because they have so many damn commercials.

Peacock is easily the most half-baked streaming service anyone's tried to roll out. I get it for free with my internet and I still don't bother using it.
I have found this to be the best page for live shtein: https://www.nbcolympics.com/schedule

The Olympics are off and running, and each day in this space we'll give you the top events to watch the next day in Tokyo.
With the time difference, each day's live competition begins in primetime Eastern and runs overnight into mid-morning the following day. There will be no live events from roughly 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern each day, though that time will be filled with delayed or re-aired broadcasts of various events. This installment covers events happening Tuesday in Tokyo, which unfolds from Monday evening through Tuesday morning in the United States.
All dates and times below are converted to Eastern time, 13 hours behind Tokyo time. NBC's main-channel curated coverage Monday night will feature the men's gymnastics team final (which already took place early this morning) and more swimming semis and finals. All events can be streamed at NBCOlympics.com.
Top U.S. events
Women's gymnastics
What: Team final
When: Tuesday, 6:45 a.m.
TV: NBC (delayed, 8 p.m. Tuesday) and streaming
Simone Biles and Co. go for team gold after a less-than-stellar performance in qualification. They finished second there to the ROC. NBC is saving this for the prime-time broadcast Tuesday night, so go to Peacock or NBCOlympics.com if you want to watch it live in the morning.
Softball
What: United States vs. Japan (gold-medal game)
When: Tuesday, 7 a.m.
TV: NBCSN and streaming
The U.S. hopes this is their big revenge game. Japan stunned the Americans in the last softball Olympic gold-medal game back in 2008. Now they meet again for the same prize. The bronze-medal game between Canada and Mexico is first up at midnight on CNBC.
Swimming
What: Men's 200m free, women's 100m back, men's 100m back, women's 100m breast finals, plus semis

TV: NBC (evening semis and finals), USA (morning heats) and streaming
Katie Ledecky tries to advance to the women's 200-meter freestyle final in the first races of the evening. That's followed by four finals with plenty of U.S. medal hopes. In the morning session, Caeleb Dressel will compete in his signature event, the men's 100-meter freestyle.
Women's soccer
What: United States vs. Australia
When: Tuesday, 4 a.m.
TV: USA and streaming
The women completely turned their tournament around with a 6-1 win over New Zealand in the second group game. Now they need only a draw with the Aussies to ensure a spot in the knockout round. The group's other final game, New Zealand vs. Sweden, plays concurrently. Too early for you? The game re-airs at 10 a.m. ET on USA.
Women's basketball
What: United States vs. Nigeria
When: Tuesday, 12:40 a.m.

The United States women hope to get off to a better start than the men as they face Nigeria in their Olympic opener. The U.S. women last lost at the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992, before six of their current players were born.
Women's 3x3 basketball
What: United States vs. Japan (opening round)
When: Tuesday, 12:30 a.m.

When: Monday, 8 p.m. (Ross/Klineman) and Monday, 11 p.m. (Lucena/Dalhausser)
TV: CNBC (women), USA (men) and streaming
A win would put Ross and Klineman in great position to advance out of pool play. After losing their opener, Lucena and Dalhausser would be on the cusp of elimination with another loss.
Rugby sevens
What: United States vs. South Africa
When: Monday, 10:30 p.m.
TV: CNBC and streaming
This will be the toughest group-stage game for the United States, but they've already clinched a spot in the knockout round for the first time in the team's Olympic history. South Africa offers a good test of the competition they'll see there.

Archery, badminton, boxing, handball, field hockey, sailing, surfing, tennis
whenever something is live itll say "live" in the top right of the screen
for whatever reason they werent able to move gymnastics to being live for east coast primetime so all of it takes places at like 3am then is re-packaged the next day. swimming is live and track will be too. they were guilty of this in the past but now for the most part there is very little tape delaying
the other sports are all over the map time wise but theyre mostly live
Ping pong is the summer version of curling for me. I watch the shtein out of it

Watched the mixed doubles final. Stangely compelling.
biles out. mental issue, not physical. weird.
Grand scheme don't mean shtein they move on but the Alex Morgan goal that was disallowed because a strand of her hair was offsides was a joke
us softball only has one hit though 5. I have just watched more softball in 8 minutes than my entire life combined.
watched 2 hours of womens gymnastics and peacock did not show a single graphic, leaderboard, etc the entire time. what a worthless service.
Peacork sucks. NBC main coverage hasn't been much better.
I watched the softball, handball and now water polo. Sucks the softball team didn't win. Bats were cold.
Anything more on Biles??
I get it, there are 900 different events at once but took me half the morning yesterday to find surfing. To watch live I had to get the NBC sports Olympic app. Guess they finally showed the men's finals at 4 AM EST on NBC Sports channel. Conditions were awful as incoming typhoon now Tropical Storm Nepartak messed it up. Choppy, awful conditions, water looked nasty but that was becasue of the black sand beach.
Hawaii girl Carissa Moore won the gold! The men's gold medalist Brazilian Italio Ferrera surfs like he's skateboarding, unbelievable shtein he pulled off.

the 2024 olympics in paris will be better and the 2028 in LA will even better numbers wise so this narrative wont last long. and im someone who barely consumes the olympics.
the only thing live in primetime now is swimming and without phelps theres no way those will be as good
watching people swim is almost as boring as golf
im game for any race so long as it takes a couple of minutes
the female swimmers by and large are gross though. i do like laughing at the guys who wear their trunks just above their shaft line are clearly male porn actor shaven

farging dvr cut off right before the shootout started. Couldn't find a video so had to read about it. They should beat Canada but this team looks off compared to other years.
I always add another hour to games just in case. My daughter and wife were home watching it and I just got the whole thing in 3 hours. Holy shtein I love this team.
Gutsiest group of badass bitches ever.
man I love olympic swimming so much. I was very high a few nights ago and thought I came up with the idea for a mixed medley relay. sounded wild. then I find out tonight it's a new event tonight. farging awesome event, mixed gender medley relay. our girls goggles came off and we lost but fun to watch.
also, I have never seen a woman kick the ball as hard as that Rapinoe shot to win it today. what a farging rocket.
In addition to watching ping pong I find archery interesting for some reason
Also glad track and field is getting cranked up
this swimmer Dressel has a 41 inch vertical. that would be 12th best of all time in nba combine. Dominique had a 42 inch. Levine and MJ best all time with 46.

DVR set for an extra hour. I'm semi confident they'll get by Canada but Sweden's a different beast.
That PK was ticky tack. US clearly the better team but credit Canada's goalie she stole at least 2 goals
Antonovski's tactics were idiotic but not nearly as stupid as his lineup today.
Bottom line is it's an aging dynasty and they got shutout an unimaginable (3) times in the last two weeks. Hard to believe but there it is.
I have loved this USWNT for a long time and they deserve nothing but praise and admiration, but the fact that they have continued to trot Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe out onto the field is a travesty (at least they didn't start today) and it has hurt the development of the next wave of players. The fact that the defense is being anchored by Sauerbrunn and O'Hara is just as bad. These ladies are ooooold. Players like Christen Press and Alex Morgan and Julie Ertz should be leading the super young generation of players on this team as the grizzled vets and instead they've had to play second fiddle to players who are no longer at the peak of their powers. I certainly don't mean any disrespect to the older wave of players because they have earned everything they got but they need to get out of the way.
The gold cup final was dope, though.
Carli Lloyd is beyond cooked. So is Rapinoe. It's blatantly obvious. That said, NOT starting Lloyd if the plan was to play her might be the biggest blunder ever. She is built for games like this and allowing her free reign in the beginning of a match with her "kill or be killed" mindset is exactly what they needed. Imagine the Canadians seeing Lloyd out there running wild for the first 20 minutes (which is all she has left anyway).
Not starting Heath with Press is so colossally stupid it defies description.
Whatever though.

with such an amazing time I wonder why he doesn't also run the straight 400 without the hurdles in his way.
The American who won silver obliterated the "old" WR too. The look on his face afterward said it all.

The Canadian beat all 3 yanks in the 200. The 17 year old American who came in 4th really comes off as a skeez ball but he's def going to be setting some records at some point.
Watching a completely different USWNT this morning. They're flying all over the field, passes are crisp, defending is great and the goals have been ridiculous. Of course Rapinoe has two and Lloyd has the other.
Where the farg has this team been?
The men's 4 x 100 relay team was brutal. That was pathetic.

not that I can imagine winning an olympic medal at any age - but Allison Felix gets one in track at 35? crazy.
She's a goddess.

I was looking at the medal count earlier and noticed that the US won 30 medals alone in swimming. Just in that one sport. That's more medals than France has won in total.
I know we're usually good in the water but that's just damn impressive to me.
Being better than France at something is not necessarily saying much.

another way of looking at it we have an enormous amount of rich people who will spend an ungodly amount of money and force their kids to spend their lives in the pool and like 3 of them win a gold medal that has really no monitory value since swimming exists only within the context of the olympics (save for someone like phelps)
We're awesome at something. Shut up the both of yous.
Also - women's beach volleyball is on. We're good at that too. On the women's side anyway.

Brazilians in beach volleyball tho
Has there ever been an olympics with so little buzz? I had no idea it was even happening until I accidentally saw some curling today.
It's a games during a pandemic in a country the State Department says is in the midst of carrying out a genocide. The networks didn't travel to cover it, it's subject to a diplomatic boycott, and the sponsors aren't out there trumpeting their involvement either.
My company has been a HUGE Olympic sponser for years. Since the pandemic it's like "What's the Olympics?"
I wish the whole world boycotted China, they are a horrendous nation. Personally, I think they are a paper tiger that is more likely than not to crumble within the next decade.

Yeah they're awful.
IOC
FIFA
NCAA
NFL
MLB
I'd probably rank the worst like that.
UEFA and IAAF are worse than any orgs based out of America.
F1/FIA goes through periods of corruption too, and the overall integrity of the competitions seems questionable to me, with some constructors having obviously way more pull than others. A simple glance at a list of where they currently run grands prix is enough to draw quite a bit of suspicion that not everything is happening above board.
all the things mentioned matter but number one no buzz factor is because its on the other side of the world and nothing good is live in primetime...this is nothing new but every time it happens i have zero interest...id be down for a bunch of it if i could sit down and watch live events in the evening

the only way you get that is if its in the USA/Canada. and even then, certain events will have to be in the afternoon to hit european primetime (balancing act for the IOC to keep all countries happy...nbc pays the most and has the most pull). they are trying to push salt lake city to host a winter games to 1) make nbc happy and 2) nobody wants to host and they already have the infrastructure
If there's a big event at 2am 4am 7am etc. our time do they show it live and in prime time tape delayed or do they only show it tape delayed.
right now they are showing everything live on peacock or one of the cable channels, then re packaging for primetime on nbc
nothing is getting tape delayed and saved for later...though evidently like when gymanstics aired over the summer at 5am the whole broadcast was a disaster

I'm the exact opposite, one of my favorite things about the olympics is that you can find some fun shtein to watch at 4 in the morning or weird times when there is usually nothing going on.
also with Beijing they're exactly 12 hours ahead, maybe 13 currently, so there will be a lot of good stuff happening prime time EST. they do a lot of snow stuff early in the day so the snow doesn't get all farged up / melt throughout the day.
Curling continues to be the best winter sport don't @ me
Gotta agree about curling. Looks like the kind of sport drunk ass Canadians would play drunk as hell. Love to try it just for the hell of it.

5. flippin thru channels
in this way its kind of like water polo of the winter games
it seems like it should be good but its excruciatingly boring...its like sitting at a bar with that hand shuffleboard game but watching two other doods you dont know play
curling is everyones go-to pretend to like sport during the winter olympics...you see a few funny clips on twitter and are like wow curling is cool, the swedish team has a few moderately hot women.
but then you watch it and yes its monstrously boring

that's right but they don't really put all the fun winter events primetime local time. first off there's no fans to have to worry about crowds or scheduling for fan attendance. secondly they do a majority of the snow events in the morning so shtein is still fluffy and not icy. last night all the major team ice skating events were live at like 8-11 PM EST, so they were morning there.
i was curious how they were going to do figure skating since its the only real draw sport for the games...seems like most things EXCEPT womens are going to be live in that 8-11pm spot
womens of course is really the only thing anyone cares about, and thats hitting asian primetime at 4/5am

Or maybe the link is that the Olympics are a 20th century dinosaur running on fumes in the 21st century, kinda like the related concepts of the United Nations and network TV.
Dinosaurs are super heroes at least ones who can fly
