Just waiting for this St. John's/St. Mary's game to end.  I love this shtein.  If I didn't have a 6 AM HST conference call I'd love to head down and watch the Hawaii/Central Michigan game.

yeah no shtein dickface. but its disgusting how much he roots for duke even as the so-called biased play by play guy. so bad tonight.

duke looks good as shtein though. it sucks for everyone. except for maybe the kkk.

Post by: ice grillin you on November 24, 2010, 07:10:47 AM
he doesnt root for dook anymore than north carolina or kansas...he loves the classic programs and puts them on another level from all other teams...it just so happens that duke won last year and is the favorite this year so you notice it more...when nc was at the top he did the same thing with them
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: phattymatty on November 24, 2010, 09:09:42 AM
100% false. he's had duke on another level since I was ten years old.

yes, georgetown does seem to blow at the moment but they'll pick it up.

and i got deja vu watching that duke game, i feel like florida state beats duke when they're #1 every time they play.

i also went 7 for 7 in gambling on college games yesterday.

It almost feels like he never misses. I didn't watch the 2nd half last night, but the first was one of the most entertaining games I'd seen in a while. SDSU moves the ball around really well and has an intricate offensive play, then BYU just feeds the ball to Jimmer and it's in the hoop. Ridiculous.

hes from glens falls ny which is like 45 minutes from my house in upstate ny....in december byu scheduled a homecoming game for him...but they didnt do it in albany or at msg...they actually did it in glens falls at the same arena where the phantoms now play...words cant describe how awful this little "city" and arena are...arena holds 4100 i think....its like an older way smaller utica or for matty reading...a tiny classic east coast ex factory manufacturing town....the fact that byu did that for him is pretty cool

Simmons:

QuoteQ: Just wondering your thoughts on Jimmer Fredette. Reading articles about him, scouts seem divided. What kind of pro do you think he'll make? Any comparable players to his style?
-- Nick McLain., Indianapolis

SG: Remember, as long as you have one elite skill, you can play in the NBA for 8-10 years. Jimmer can fill it. He won't be a bust. I see him landing somewhere between a homeless man's Mark Price and an extremely poor and almost destitute man's Stephen Curry. Could he eventually carry your second-team offense for six minutes per half? Yes. Could he thrive as a spot-up shooter on the right team? Yes. Would you have to hide him on defense at all times? Yes. Would it be fun to scream "JIMMER!" and watch him swish 28-foot 3-pointers? Yes. Would it be fun to have an NBA star whose name sounds like what they called an erection in 1920? Of course.

steph curry is a scorer at the nba level...jimmer will be a shooter so theres no comparison there...

i think hes the classic case of where he goes will dtermine how he fares...on the right team i think he could be a steve kerr...but he could just as easily be steve alford

temple is a 4 or 5 seed at this point and 4 or 5 seeds arent supposed to be talk tough after beating something called richmond at home

Ouch but true.  I thought the spiders would be better this year with a team full of seniors but they have disappointed.  Xavier and Temple probably make it to the tournament from the A-10.
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: MDS on February 18, 2011, 12:20:51 PM
richmond is a borderline tournament team even now and that tells you everything you need to know about the state of the ncaa these days

xavier was barely getting past western michigan and ipfw in november and now they gonna run through the a10 with just one loss

the whole thing is terrible expect for the tourney which in itself is only fun because of gambling...they need to cut the division 1 teams to something like 100 so the talent isnt going all over the place.

its not just this year....this decade alone george mason and butler made final 4's and butler was an inch away from winning the title.

if you use last year as a basis temple was a top 15 team that won the a10 tourney and still was just a 5 seed....so using that logic this year they are a 7 or an 8 or something like that
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on February 18, 2011, 01:22:00 PM
george mason and butler show parity not weakness...they both deservingly made the tourney and had amazing underdog runs...thats what the tournament is all about

last couple years cbb has just been plain awful...the overall zestyness of the sport also takes away from a butler making it now because with no really good teams it changes the definition of 'upset' and limits the amount of true cinderellas there could be

it doesnt matter to me whether they would have hit the shot or not..they werent given the opportunity which as far as im concerned, would define getting hosed.

and regardless of which school got farged, this happened in the big east tourney which is clearly the best of them all so to say no one cares is a little silly.

espn cares because its 8 minutes they can use during sportscenter...but im not sure who else really gives a damn

had this happened to a bubble team or in the semi final or finals bwtn like pitt syracuse it would carry more weight

as it is tho i dont see it being a big deal...shtein even the rutgers coach didnt care
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread

i care as a fan of college basketball, not as an alum of rutgers. if a call (or calls) as bad as that can happen in the big east tourney (by refs who have each officiated multiple final four games), it makes me concerned that it can, and probably will happen in the big dance.

publicly, rice handled it incredibly well. he was irate in the locker room over it though so dont think what he presented in his post game presser was exactly how he felt.

i dont think its news that bad calls could happen anywhere anytime and i dont think the rutgers game changes that in the least

seemed like rice cared about the non foul calls more than the out of bounds thing

probably for two reasons

one he knew that they had little to no chance of making a shot there

two if you brings a ton of attention to that call then it also bring attention to the fact that his entire benched also missed it

id be hard pressed to think of a call as bad as those is at a point in the game as critical as it was

also, why is it so inconceivable to think they would have made that shot? they would have inbounded from halfcourt with 1.7 left...plenty of time to make something happen.
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on March 10, 2011, 11:19:23 AM
it def was not inconcievable but it had very little chance of happening...so little that it wasnt worth getting upset over

nebraska 5th down game was much worse...phil luckett too

im sure theres a hundred more calls in sports history that were more agregious mostly because yesterdays game meant absolutely nothing
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: DH on March 10, 2011, 11:26:39 AM
did you see the shot seton hall made the day before? that had very little chance of happening too.

i still dont see how you can say a big east tourney game means nothing regardless of the teams playing.
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on March 10, 2011, 11:34:17 AM
big east tournament is a watered down mess that was ruined by their expansion so i dont bye into the greatness of it anymore....the final is still a great watch but these first two rounds are awful

i guess the game kinda meant something to syracuse in that rutgers would have been a easier game for them but other than that it didnt matter who won

btw those refs are out for the rest of the tourney
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread

Post by: ice grillin you on March 10, 2011, 11:42:44 AM
the big east only did it so the crew wouldnt take away shine from the actual games theyd be officiating...it wasnt a punishment to the refs

i bet if it had happened in a reg season game they would have stayed on their regular rotation

temple blows, but that has nothing to do with the embarrassment that is a 13-loss penn st with 0 good out of conference wins safely getting an at large. they beat wisconsin twice and michigan st twice, both of which suck, and now theyre a 10 seed.

its horrendous. in fact they are the 1 team temple might be able to beat.

further proves my point, actually

no one really remembers any of this stuff. the ncaa tournament is a fun couple of days of watching lots of hoops and mindlessly gambling. nothing more, nothing less. in the end unless you get a duke/butler situation the ending is fairly anti climactic.

but at least its decided on the court and not by a calculator

no, you can discuss it

but its a pointless circle of ooo colorado should be in not vcu when 99% of the people talking havent anyseen either of them play and couldnt tell you the first thing about the logistics of caa scheduling and recruiting

all of those teams are gonna be gone by sunday anyway. if you feel bad for some senior on colorado because he wont get to "experience" the ncaa tournament (which is terrible to go to btw) then alright. youre a complete Hoyda but alright.

no one feels bad for them and no one has to have seen any of the teams (uab - vcu - col) to know it was arguably the all time worst snub/inclusion in tourney history

Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: MDS on March 14, 2011, 10:47:44 PM
lol

my point is no one can remember any of the snubs with the exception of the fan bases from that team. i can vividly remember temple getting jobbed twice in seeding (2000 they were 2 and should have been a 1...last year they were 5 and should have been a 3 or a 4). but im the only person who remembers that or gives a shtein.

its like talking about being not making the all star team in baseball.

and since were on the subject of hyperbole penn st has to the be the worst 10 seed of all time. and this has to be the weakest tourney field of all time. and i have the biggest cock of all time.

and in terms of sports debates theres a big difference between debating who is really number 1 college football and who is really number 39 in college basketball. everyone can watch alabama and tcu and oregon. nobody watches vcu and colorado and clemson. you can still have it but its full of generalities and mimics exactly what jay bilas just said.

Air Force getting in a few years ago when they weren't even on anyone's first four out list was the worst inclusion of all time.  They got pummeled in the first round too.  Colorado was snubbed but I don't remember being as floored by it as when Air Force was let in.

not that it matters how you lose (or even if you win) once you are already a bad pick but what year did they get pummeled cause recently air force lost by 8 and 11 to illinois and north carolina respectively

and looking at their resumes both those years neither one is worse than uab...uab literally did not beat a single tourney team (vcu is not a tourney until they win tonight)

im not super high on pitt im more high on their unbelievably easy draw...there are no great teams this year and anyone can lose just about anytime but its set up for pitt perfectly...their second round game will be against a mid major their 3 and 4 seeds are by far the worst in the tourney and their two is over seeded...i actually belmont playing them in the sweet sixteen thats how down i am on their bracket

and i dont count the usually arent a good tourney stuff...every year is different

Nice run before the half.  Looking better.  SDSU can get really cold from the floor.  I saw them play about 5 times before the MW tourney and their game Thursday and they go on these horrid streaks where they can't score.

nova swoops in and frees up a scholarship and boom, hes there. its fine. its how it is. if im him i might make the same move.

but chaney got 5 star kids from time to time. xavier gets 5 star kids every now and then and they have a big east team in their city plus osu, kentucky and louisville in the backyard. temple should be able to now. im not saying once a year or something but every so often they should have the ability to really get a blue chip player.

problem is it doesnt look like fran has the capabilities to close the deal. maybe they should find someone who can.

when I look at a game like Kentucky vs. UNC I think to myself..which state is more Southern?  And then I root for the other.

Kentucky got the nod in this case, and so I'm pleased with the result.

Define hick.

Kentucky is more hillbilly than hick.  I think of the former as ignorant but generally good natured, generous, forgiving, and the latter as ignorant but generally petty, mean spirited, and close minded.

F the Carolinas, both of 'em.

UNC has a really nice campus and everyone I've met in NC was always friendly to me. I went to UNC for a couple years before I transferred for bigger and better things.

I've never been to Kentucky though.

Ha! What's funny is that UNC's campus is in the middle of a veritable liberal mecca. Hippies and elitists abound. You'd be in heaven.

Most major colleges and universities tend to be fairly liberal and so do the populations of the local town surrounding them, so even though NC might be a conservative state, it's not surprising in the least that the RDU area would be more liberal than the rest of the state.

BYU and Notre Dame would be pretty obvious exceptions though.
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: Diomedes on March 28, 2011, 06:48:21 PM
Of course college campuses are liberal.

Intellectual life is by definition liberal.

Let me put it another way:  which place hosted more lynchings, enforced more Jim Crow laws, harbors more avowed racists?

North Carolina beat Kentucky out, I think.

Besides, Kentucky has bourbon.  And it's right next to Ohio, which was FREELAND to slaves.

NC is just hateville.

North Carolina has more brothers and sisters in one county than Kentucky has in the entire state. Picking NC over Kentucky as some sort of racial statement is retarded beyond even being worth discussing.

Stick with the bourbon argument.

that said i cant imagine nc being more racist or conservative than kentucky...altho i will say for the last three years ive gone to nags head and heard like 5-10 n bombs dropped in bars in the week i stay there which is more than i hear the rest of the year combined in all the places i go...me and my girl are just dumbfounded by it

I do experience book inspired dreams from time to time.

But I have no idea what the hell was going on last night...I dreamt that I went for a walk and ended up watching movies with a group of christian kids who were living in this complex of nice apartment buildings for free.  All the girls were hyper-sexualized--squirming in their pants--but ultimately chaste.  The two guys I hung out with seemed to be normal, but one of them had a big bible hanging on his wall that had handwriting on the front which said "there is no love without Jesus."  Somehow, I ended up helping them caulk out some windows which were allowing air into the house, and eventually, my wife and I left.

I think we need a dreams thread.

Chuggie, help a stillupfront's mom out.

I completely disagree with this. Williams is one of the most overrated coaches in the country and the only reason people feel the way you do is because Maryland plays in the ACC and every now and then they beat a #1 team.

In 22 seasons, Williams won 1 championship - the only finals appearance he ever made. Nolan Richardson won more than him. Worse than that, he only made 7 sweet 16 appearances in his 22 seasons and hasn't seen the round of 16 since Juan Dixon won him his only title - that doesn't exactly scream untouchable to me.
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on May 17, 2011, 11:43:48 AM
nolan richards cheated....gary to his own fault and because he was taking over a program coming off what was essentially the death penalty refused to cheat and then he refused to move forward with the times and would not associate himself with aau reps which really hurt his recruiting

gary williams is one of the best game coaches of all time and won an insane amount of games with less talent than most other big programs...and this is in the best conference in the country over the last 25 years...hes a lock hall of famer and to compare him to nolan richardson is embarrassing

all that aside all i was saying was that he was untouchable at maryland...he was a beloved alumnist who took his alma mater out of the dark ages and got them their only national championship...he was never getting fired or forced out there
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: DH on May 17, 2011, 12:25:04 PM
I wasnt comparing his body of work to richardsons, just saying they each won the same amount of titles - and nolan took his teams to more final fours.

Why would you give him a free pass for not going after recruits through the aau/adidas camps scene? If he chose against making his program better by refusing to go after guys "unconventionally", thats his fault and something that would be unforgivable if I were a bigtime Terrapin bball fan.

I just dont see how he can be considered untouchable. Since they won their title in 02', UNC has won 2, and Duke 1. In that same time, Maryland has only seen the sweet 16 once, and missed out on dancing 4 times. I dont care if he's an alum or not, built a the program the right way, whatever - he was at his expiration date and the program will be much better off for it.
Title: Re: 2010-11 College Basketball Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on May 17, 2011, 12:55:05 PM
he was untouchable for the reasons i mentioned....took over after the bob wade scandal when the job was coaching ebola won a national championship at a place where it was never thought of was a money making machine...also you and i think its dumb not to cheat but lots of educators and fans think its honorable and because of that he was beloved by many in the terp community...especially rich elders and that brings up maybe the biggest reason he was never getting run out....the amount of big money doners he attracted will never be matched at the school again...

he literally is a GOD there and will have the court named after him soon...there are certain coaches who will never ever ben fired or forced out and he was on that short list

Now you're just being cruel, lumping Wake in with Hall and Miami.  Since 2000, Wake has averaged the 9th best recruiting class in the country.  The problem hasn't been getting the players (it will become the problem now with Bzdelik), but doing anything with them.  0 trips beyond the Sweet 16 that entire time.   :poison

How funny!  University of Hawaii's men's team is in China as well and almost had a big brawl with a Chinese team.  Hawaii players said the Chinese players were dirty and a lot shtein going on after the whistle. Apparently they're a bunch of pricks over there.
