Title: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on March 10, 2012, 07:59:20 PM
i never know where to put philly sports posts that pertain to more than one team...so here it is

kinda spurred on by the DC young guns i posted last night if you had to pick a mount rushmore of philadelphia sports...but one from each franchise....what would it look like...talkin all time...not your favorite...maybe not even the best...but just who would be on the mountainside as the guy who represents the team the best and/or most associated with the franchise

sixers -
phillies -
flyers -
eagles -

and now your personal favorite athlete from each franchise both current and all time...philly heads who just like the eagles post your birds picks

sixers -current/alltime
phillies -
flyers -
eagles -

All-Time

Sixers - Dr J
Flyers - Bobby Clarke (toothless smile on the sculpture)
Phillies - Mike Schmidt
Eagles - Reggie White

The first three were no brainers IMO but I struggled with the Eagles one. They don't have the best winning history nor a real iconic player except for Reggie.

Personal

Sixers - Iguodala / Dr J
Flyers - Giroux / Hextall
Phillies - Jimmy / Kruk
Eagles - Shady / Duce

halladay is your all time favorite phillie legendz??

depends on how you're judging it.  if it's what they contributed over their career it would be rollins...if it's watching one person play at any point in their career then I enjoy watching Halladay pitch probably more than any other phillies player.  not old enough to remember watching anyone from the 80s teams, so it's pretty much by default someone from this squad, and if you're just weighing at their best who you enjoy watching the most, it would be Halladay, obv not if you're judging the entire career.

Mt. Rushmore

Sixers - Wilt, best player of all time can't not be the Sixers rep even if he played for Warriors and Lakers
Phillies - Schmidt, again best of all time comes into play because he's the best 3b ever
Eagles - Bednarik, i thought about reggie here, but havas makes a point about being elsewhere more than philly.  bednarik is representative of the last championship and everybody knows the pic of him and gifford
Flyers - Clarkie, no explanation needed

Current Favorites:

Eagles - pimp, although there aren't many likeable players on this team.  nobody on defense except maybe cole and he's as vanilla as they come
Flyers - Giroux, loved him in juniors and glad to see him blow up
Phillies - Hamels, 08 NLCS, WS MVP, brought the city a title.  always remember the shot of him bearing down during game 5 part 1 in the rain
Sixers - Jeru although ET might creep up there if he keeps playing well.

All Time Favories

Sixers - Barkley with AI a close 2nd
Phillies - Dutch Dalton, loved that 93 team and he was the leader, played catcher as i grew up because of him
Eagles - Dawkins, this was my toughest choice, i considered Randall and Reggie but Dawkins was the best defensive player they had in my formidable years of watching the team
Flyers - Hextall, loved the brawls, the crazy saves and the intensity

yeah I dunno, I just sort of went by how I enjoy watching the most.  Rollins has been my favorite Phillie for years but I love watching Halladay pitch.

With the Flyers I like Briere because dude always mans up in the playoffs.

This Eagles team is ridiculously unlikeable.  With every other team I was picking between players I like whereas with the Eagles it was hard just to come up with a few, but shady is pretty far and away my favorite.

none of us can barely find an eagle to pick

and theres like a total of six guys btwn the other three teams that qualify...theres not exactly a difference of opinion or a large selection to choose from....and you wanna go four deep

probably should move this whole thing to sports suffering cities

I could have gone a lot of different ways with that, I was tempted to pick Jerome or Clyde, but Reggie to me reminds me most of that defense. I grew up during that time and remember then being proud that although the offense was anemic most teams basically dreaded playing them. Probably never see it's like again.

Um, no Eagles team in the last 50 years has won anything you idiot.  By your logic, McNabb should be everyone's favorite Eagle because he won a few playoff games.

You know that pretty much every sports fan's all time favorite players are guys they watched when they were kids, right?  You really don't need this explained, do you?

possible but when you say reggie white people think of him either lifting his helmet up during the packers sb win or saying god told him to sign with gb

5th or 6th on the list is him playing for an eagles team that never accomplished anything.

not exactly a stout representative on the philly sport mt rushmore

but a mt rushmore thing isnt about talent necessarily. its about who is philly and who is a true eagles and who represents the franchise and the sport in the city. that aint reg.

well that will be dawk once he comes home and has his number retired....which is why i picked him...basically i agree with you...what disagree with is the notion that its complete craziness to pick reggie

plus its kinda hard to represent the eagles from a dirt box...so in that respect reggies at a litle disadvantage

Reggie was the greatest Defensive End of all time, was the leader of one of the greatest defenses of all time, and spent 8 years as an Eagle compared to 6 as a Packer. I don't see how he could be left off the list because he had success elsewhere.
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on March 12, 2012, 05:31:09 PM
heres why im against him

if you ask ten people on the street reggie white: packer or eagle?....you are gonna get packer more than half the time...imo someone who could go either way as far as what they were shouldnt be on anyones mt rushmore
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: SD on March 12, 2012, 05:36:42 PM
Except you're not asking random people on the street, this is an Eagles thing for Eagles fans. You poll 100 Eagles fans on their Mount Rushmore and Reggie White will overwhelmingly make the list [just look at this thread for example]

To say this is stupid is an insult to stupidity in general.  We might as well be saying he wasn't REALLY an Eagle because he farging played in the USFL before he got to Philly.

He's an Eagle.  He's the best player in franchise history.  The end.

i dont disagree...fans are always gonna try and say someone is theres if its a 50/50 thing....which is why if you asked packer fans theyed all say hes a packer....i just cant put someone up there who could go either way....i want a 100% no doubt eagle...but again i totally get why he could be up there

i dont have a problem with reggie as 1 of the 4, but as 1 its ridiculous

when you think of concrete or bdawk you think philly, then you think eagles.

when you think reggie you think of god, winning a sb with the packers and later on down the list is oh yea he was awesome on the eagles early in his career.

most talented eagle ever? sure. i can buy that.

but if you are picking one person to represent the franchise, the city and the history you cant possibly go with him.

you cant possibly go with him.

Yeah, I really can.  See, he's the best player in franchise history.  If the sole criterion is longevity or only playing in the NFL as an Eagle, then obviously it can't be him.

But if being the greatest player to ever wear the uniform is the sole criterion, he's the man.

So farg off.

I was a little hazy and hungover this morning but I think they said Bryz was 3-0 with a 0.79 GAA vs. the Devils this season. And my prediction is Flyers in 5 maybe 6. I'm expecting to see another Kovalchuk disappearing act.

This has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with the nature of the sport but I'd put the Flyers at #1. In the NHL a team can squeak into the playoffs and make a run. I know Bryz is a disaster and I'd trade him for a hot dog but his retarded Russian ass could get hot one year if everything else fell into place and the Flyers could pull off a cup win. Average/below average goalies do that almost every season. The Eagles I'd rank second, I don't think they're winning a SB any time soon. They have a talented team but there are still teams that are better. Maybe if I had more confidence in Vick. I want to have that confidence but I don't. The bottom two sound about right.

flyers - 1.00001

negadelf

I've been thinking positively about the Eagles too but let's get real -- that's only because unlike the other teams they haven't disappointed us for seven months. They also haven't played for seven months. Out of sight, out of mind. We'll all be bitching about Reid and Vick and Juan and Howie by the time the clock hits zero on Week 1 (or at least Week 2). The football gods have toyed with us for years, giving us a storied franchise that is usually full of drama but chronically incapable of winning a Super Bowl. Fate will continue to farg with us, this team is destined to underachieve.

Flyers have the best shot for the reason SD said. It's a sport like baseball where whoever catches a streak in the playoffs tends to win, but unlike baseball it's simple to make the playoffs and the Flyers are a good enough organization to do it pretty much every year, at least until the old man croaks. Goaltending is big, but it's also a sport where a crappy goalie can get on a hot streak. I still expect them to lose every year, but a little less than the other Philly teams.

This Phils window appears closed but if they maintain being a big-spending club they can put themselves in position to keep rebuilding and to compete most years. In a sport without a salary cap, you can't buy a WS win but based on recent history I think you can buy a pretty good team with much higher odds of making the playoffs than small-market clubs. Once you're in it's just about being the team with that hot streak. If they don't maintain the big wallet, the odds plummet.

Basketball is a superstar-driven sport. Things like building an actual team or good coaching are vastly less important than having a superstar. What we saw from the Sixers this year is about the best you can get out of a team without one. They have zero prospects of obtaining a superstar. Therefore they have zero prospects of winning the NBA Finals. The way this league is set up is completely dysfunctional. There are 30 teams in the league, but only 8 of them have won more recently than the Sixers in '83. Most of the league is just cannon fodder, and the Sixers are among the fodder.

ive already bitched about vick and expect him to be the downfall...but my sunny outlook tells me hes going to have a brad johnson superbowl year

most of the rest of what you say i agree with cept the phillies...they are NOT the yankees or red sox where they will just reload because they dont have a foundation to add to....also they do have a salary cap...the luxury tax....
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: SD on June 24, 2012, 10:24:59 AM
As long as fan support stays relatively high they can stay competitive. They may not be in the Yankee/Sox category but they're definitely in the Cards/Angels category meaning they should be able to stay competitive and compete every season. Maybe one of those seasons they break through and win another WS. They need a GM with imagination. Time to part ways to RAJ.
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on June 24, 2012, 10:30:04 AM
even if the phillies would go over the luxury tax limit which they wont theyd still need a foundation from which to add free agents to and they dont

they have an exclusively over 30 roster cept heidi and a terrible farm system

they could have a 300 million dollar payroll and they still wouldnt be world series competitive for at least five years

You can't predict the future. Nobody thought the Cards would be in the playoffs last season much less winning it all. I'm not as down on the 30+ year olds as you are. Halladay will be back, Hamels is fine, Lee is still a good pitcher. The hitting hasn't been that bad. The real problem is their middle relief, if they had 2 middle relievers who were worth a damn they'd be in contention. The NL is not good and they can win with what they've got. Just because they're struggling this season doesn't mean they're done for the next 5 seasons. They need to add some pieces and go from there.
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: Munson on June 24, 2012, 11:51:26 AM
They have the pitchers now + the pitchers in the farm to keep a relatively decent rotation, which could allow them to spend money on the offense the next couple years and get some decent young guys in the lineup to pair with some role players.
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on June 24, 2012, 11:52:41 AM
its pretty easy to predict the future with this roster...older and worse is all they are going to get...shtein before this season even started it was obvious and now its even more so

a massive overhaul is in order....blow it up try and acquire young talent to rebuild and once that happens then start dumping money on a couple of big time free agents to complete the transition and go for another world series...but again this is a five year plan

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but even if it takes them five years to compete for another WS, there's still good odds they win the next Philly championship. All the teams in this city are a bunch of bums. I'm taking the longview with this question because I expect the next championship a Philly team wins will be mostly with players not currently playing in Philly. Maybe Giroux or Fletcher Cox are still around.

And if the Phils decide to close the wallets and fall back into the pack, forget it. It'll be another 25 years.
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on June 24, 2012, 12:25:17 PM
phils wont close the wallets now that they have the money pit...but they should practice massive discretion on where they spend money for the next few years...this is why im a proponent of trading heidi and i wont be mad even if they let him walk...dumping 150 mil on him does nothing...maybe when hes 33-34 hes still a #2 guy and they are competing again for a ws but thats a big if on both counts...

that said i do respect the business part of it and the fact that losing him sends a terrible message to the fanbase..and because of that i definitely wouldnt be mad if they signed him

and i agree phillies could win the next title...its very possible...i just dont see how the eagles arent the clear favorite where we stand now

What is going on in the best sports town in America?

Late Tuesday afternoon, it was one bombshell after another. At 2:54 p.m., the Eagles announced that they had released veteran defensive end Jason Babin (see story). Then at 4:43 p.m., the Phillies released a statement from general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. regarding the 25-game suspension issued to Carlos Ruiz for testing positive for an amphetamine (see story). Add these stories to the constant chatter about Andy Reid's coaching status and Andrew Bynum's puzzling knees, and we have one big soap opera that is likely to get worse before it gets better.

Hardly anyone believes the Eagles will win again this season, and when New Year's Eve arrives Reid will be sent packing and the speculation will be in high gear regarding who will replace him. The road ahead for the Eagles will be a painful one for at least another year or two, and that is something we are not used to in this town.

After all the hype in September about Bynum's arrival, I am getting a sneaky suspicion we might not see the big guy at all in a Sixers uniform and that is disappointing.

The Phillies can change the mojo a little bit by signing a big-time free agent, but if B.J. Upton decides to bypass Philadelphia, it'll be another blow to a city that has taken its share of punches lately.

I won't bring up the Flyers because hockey fans everywhere are suffering, although I do believe federal mediator George Cohen might help save the season.

As we approach the holiday season, I hope things are going well in your life because your sports teams certainly aren't keeping you as entertained as they have in previous years.

Are we counting just the teams that currently play in Philadelphia, or all the championships won by teams playing in Philadelphia at the time?

Philadelphia Athletics:  5 (1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, 1930)
Philadelphia Phillies:  2 (1980, 2008)
Philadelphia Warriors:  1 NBA (1956), 1 BBA (Precursor of the NBA - 1947)
Philadelphia 76ers: 2 (1967, 1983)
Philadelphia Flyers: 2 (1974, 1975)
Philadelphia Eagles: 3 (1948, 1949, 1960)
Frankford Yellow Jackets: 1 (1926)

Just compiling that list is a bit depressing... defunct Philly teams have one less championship than the current teams.

Philadelphia 76ers: 2 (1967, 1983)
Philadelphia Flyers: 2 (1974, 1975)
Philadelphia Eagles: 3 (1948, 1949, 1960)
Frankford Yellow Jackets: 1 (1926)

Just compiling that list is a bit depressing... defunct Philly teams have one less championship than the current teams.

Total Philly championships - 16 (including the BBA)

Boston Celtics Championships - 17

The Lakers also have 16 total, split between 2 cities.

Major Indoor Lacrosse League/National Lacrosse League.  Championships in 89, 90, 94, 95, 98, 01.

It's a funny league.  There's 9 teams and 8 of them make the playoffs.

ESPN used to show quite a bit of the MILL back in the 90s.  Wings were on a few times and I'd be hanging out in my barracks room watching them.  I'm not even a lax "fan" but I do enjoy watching it from time to time.

No surprise that Havas isn't a fan but I'm honestly shocked that he doesn't at least know who they are.  Thought he was on the up and up on all things Philly.

orlando and charlotte could have helped....magic lost by 2 to the heat and charlotte lost to the lakers by 6 after being up by 25 and getting outscored a ridiculous 33-9 in the fourth quarter

sixers are three losses away from having the 3rd most ping pong balls with a ridiculously hard schedule the rest of the month....one of their easy games is sunday when they travel to face the fighting vuceviches

flyers are five pts out for the worst record in the nhl

Maybe I'm missing someone here, but I think AI is the only Hall of Famer or obvious future inductee to play his most productive years in Philly since Reggie White left for Green Bay 20 years ago. That is pathetic in a city with four sports.

And I'm sure some would argue that even Iverson isn't an obvious Hall of Famer. They are wrong.

I think Moses Malone put in one washed up year on the Sixers after Reggie left, so you can count that if you want. [Also, no, Dawk is not an obvious Hall of Famer, though I think his odds are decent.]

Some examples of guys I'm not counting:

Not obvious inductees: Dawk, Lindros, McNabb (lol)
Not best years in Philly: Jagr, Pedro Martinez, Art Monk
Both (arguably): Schilling

Isn't it about time for another unquestionable superstar in this town?

QuotePHILADELPHIA—A voting panel of journalists and prominent sports figures elected the D battery to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Sunday, honoring the alkaline storage cell's many achievements in pelting players from visiting teams. "The D battery is as synonymous with Philadelphia sports as intoxicated fistfights, cheering for a severely injured player, or intentionally vomiting on a child," said Philadelphia sportswriter Ray Didinger, adding that the Hall of Fame plans to install an interactive exhibit that allows children to throw batteries at life-size cutouts of rival athletes. "Whipping the D battery at opposing players, coaches, or dumbshtein referees is a crucial part of the experience for Philly fans. No other projectile has had the same impact on Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, or 76ers games. The D battery is an icon, representing the very best of Philly." The D battery will be inducted into the Philadelphia Hall of Fame by longtime Eagles season ticket holder Drunk Tony, where it will join two of last year's inductees, the glass beer bottle and the concept of booing.

QuoteTug McGraw. John Vukovich. Johnny Oates. And now Darren Daulton.

All four played for the Phillies at Veterans Stadium, and all four developed brain cancer. Is there a connection?

The rate of brain cancers in team members from that era appears to be about three times the rate in the adult male population, according to an Inquirer analysis that was reviewed by a University of Pennsylvania epidemiologist.

And that elevated rate of brain cancer is statistically significant, though the analysis had certain limitations and the pattern easily could be due to chance, said Penn's Timothy R. Rebbeck.

"These figures suggest that there's an elevated risk of brain cancers in the baseball players compared to the general population," said Rebbeck, a professor of epidemiology at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine. "You can't rule out the possibility that it's random bad luck."

The team did not respond to requests for comment.

Brain cancer can be caused by radiation and by certain rare genetic mutations, but the evidence for most other potential causes is unclear.

Studies suggest that estrogen and related hormones can protect against the development of brain cancer in women, said Geoffrey C. Kabat, senior epidemiologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

So it would be reasonable to examine whether anabolic steroids, which are related to those hormones, could play some role in brain cancer, Rebbeck said.

Occupational scientists also have looked to see whether any health issues are associated with synthetic turf, as some older kinds contained small amounts of contaminants such as lead, but there is no known link between the artificial surfaces and brain cancer.

The Inquirer identified 533 men who played for the Phillies between 1971 and 2003, and tallied the number of years they have been alive since then. For those who had died, the dates of death were taken from baseball-almanac.com.

Comparing cancer rates

The analysis then compared the rate of Phillies' brain cancers over that period with the rate of similar cancers in the adult male population, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and a 2011 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The national rate was 9.8 cases per 100,000 adult males per year, while the rate in the former Phillies was 30.1 cases per 100,000 - about 3.1 times as high. The national count included various kinds of glioma, such as glioblastoma - the aggressive form of cancer that struck all four former Phillies.

With Rebbeck's assistance, The Inquirer then calculated that this 3.1 figure had a 95 percent confidence interval of 2.1 to 4.1 - meaning that the elevated rate appeared to be statistically significant.

In lay terms, that means if one were somehow able to replay that 33-year period 100 times, you would expect the players' brain cancer rate to be 2.1 to 4.1 times higher than that in the adult male population 95 times out of 100.

Assumptions

But Rebbeck cautioned that the analysis required making certain assumptions that could substantially change the outcome.

For example, the population of Phillies from 1971 to 2003 was not adjusted for age. The rate of brain cancer varies with age, so when comparing populations, it is important that they have the same distribution of people in various age groups. The Phillies in the analysis range in age from their 30s to their 70s whereas the national population number includes men above and below that.

Furthermore, the nationwide brain cancer number for the 33-year period was based on cases counted in 2004 to 2007. A better approach would be to use the exact number of adult male brain cancers for each year from 1971 to 2003, as the cancer rate has declined slightly over time.

Attorney Brett A. Datto, a longtime friend of Daulton's, said the catcher and his family welcomed the analysis but felt it was premature to comment on any possible connection between cancer and baseball.

"Until we know more information about what may be a cause, if anything, then we're not in a position to comment," Datto said.

Two other teams - the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Royals - each have had at least three former players with brain cancer in the same era. As with the Phillies, the numbers are small enough that it could be bad luck.

To add another wrinkle, a sportswriter who covered the Phillies also died of brain cancer. Mike Ferretti, the Phillies beat writer for the Bucks County Courier Times in the 1980s and early 1990s, died of glioma in September 1993.

Jane Ferretti, Mike's mother, said she immediately thought of her son's case upon hearing about Daulton, and wondered whether there might be some connection.

"There's no answer sometimes," Ferretti said.

Vukovich played for the Phillies from 1970 to 1971 and from 1976 to 1981, and he was a team coach from 1988 to 2004. He died in 2007 at age 59.

McGraw, best known for striking out the last batter to seal the team's championship in 1980, pitched for the team from 1975 to 1984. He died in 2004, also at age 59.

Johnny Oates played for the Phillies just two years, in 1975 and 1976, spending most of his career on other teams. He died of brain cancer the same year as McGraw, at age 58.

Still another former Phillie, pitcher Ken Brett, reportedly died of brain cancer. But family members did not immediately respond to a query about the type of tumor, so he was left out of the Inquirer analysis.

Brett pitched here for just one year, 1973. One could argue that he - along with Oates, a Phillie for less than two seasons - should not be part of the Phillies' cancer toll because they played for the team for brief periods. If you took them out of the equation, that would lower the team's brain cancer rate.

But then you also would have to remove all the short-duration players who did not get brain cancer. Of the 533 Phillies, 187 played for one season or less. If you removed them from the analysis, the team's brain cancer rate would be higher.

So I had a family dinner on 3rd and Vine....had time to kill after so I went to SugarHouse. Walked around there for a bit. Walked past a guard standing in the middle of the aisle, watching a table. Weird sight. Whatever. I look over at the table...damn one of those guys looks like Allen Iverson. HOLY shtein IT IS.

Chuck had his own table (I think he was playing 3 card Poker, that's what the table said, but who knows). Reserved. Filled with...folks. Guard protecting him. Paying the world no nevermind. I stood and watched for a few seconds before the guard told me to get lost.

i couldnt get that close to the table....no idea how much he was betting. but i asked myself the same question, im pretty sure he's broke and i have no clue where he came up with the money for gambling.

let alone claiming his own table (i.e. taking one out of circulation) with a staff member watching him over.

You guys know that millionaires (especially one with any kind of star power) almost never go broke, right?  Not broke like any of us would be if we lost our jobs and had legal issues. He's just broke in comparison to 10 years ago. It's not like he's living in the pj's and collecting food stamps.

Half of the people in any given casino are broke, that doesn't seem like a major impediment to gambling for some reason. For the casino to facilitate his gambling by giving him his own table and guards though suggests that he was high rolling (at TCP, a game with heavy house advantage).
Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread
Post by: MDS on September 28, 2014, 11:13:58 AM
yea on a saturday....to claim a table to himself...he had to be laying down big time cash. a casino just isnt going to give up a table like that unless he's high rolling.

Did not know this but this is a remarkable stat
QuoteIf making a sport's final four were all that mattered, Philadelphia would be a beacon of success. Its teams have reached that stage in an impressive 22 percent of their seasons over the last half-century, a better rate than Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and every other city with at least two teams other than Boston.

Seth Joyner is going to be a contributing analyst on Breakfast on Broad this season. Reuben Frank called him the most underrated Philly athlete of all time. I happen to agree. I always thought he was a borderline hall of famer but because he played with so many great players he was overshadowed.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few players but of the 4 major sports who do you think is the most underrated athlete to play in Philly.

i watched him on there this morning...he must need the money because he looked so disinterested and wanted to be back in arizona bad

when all is said and done i think it will be choke...he is going to be remembered for strikeouts obesity achillies and contracts and its going to be a friggin shame because the numbers he put up for that 5-6 year stretch were unreal...hes also will always be in that no mans land between jimmy personality and the love for GRIT

right now id say its eric allen....hes a bonified hall of famer who is right there either on or just about at a level with deion and darrell green yet sometimes hes not even put on a level with aneas williams

hal greer is right up there as well....career leader in pts for a franchise filled with epic players...yet a lot of people think he was a sixth man or some shtein

mark howe...ridiculous above norris trophy caliber defenseman who never won one because he played during the greatest era of hockey ever...bourque langway chelios coffey all won during his time

andrew toney.....overrated in philly....criminally underrated outside of it...maybe shouldnt be here cause his window was so small but good lord was he good at his peak

IGY throwin' out Hal Greer!  Love it.

Agree on Joyner.  He was amazing and the House of Pain game at the Astrodome he played was one for the ages.  I was fortunate to play a round of golf with him in 1993 during the Pro Bowl.  Last season as an Eagle.  Just myself, Seth Joyner and my father on a chill Friday afternoon.  Rich Miano set it up.  He was so cool and it was nice getting an athlete away from the sport environment.  They're naturally relaxed being here for the Pro Bowl and being on a golf course in Hawaii made it even more so.  Most guys bring their families or current squeeze for hire but he was divorced and brought his sister.  He was just a cool guy.

There's four worse than the Phillies?

Seems about right. I assume those rankings are going to be heavily based on a teams on field success. Teams with recent titles and playoff runs will rank higher than those without. Looking at the 4 Philly teams, I'd say that those rankings fall in line with their actual performance and/or expectations. I'm guessing that the 2008/2009 rankings had the Phillies much higher.

As long as the Washington football franchise is owned by Dan Snyder, it's pretty safe to say the Phillies will never hit the bottom of that list.

I gotta imagine the racists are one of them. Terrible everything. Maybe the Knicks too. Not sure who the other 2 would be.

Well, the Grizzlies are #2 and have never won a championship. Here's the weighting:

Affordability (11.3%): Price of tickets, parking and concessions

Coaching (3.2%): Strength of on-field leadership

Fan relations (25%): Courtesy by players, coaches and front office toward fans, plus how well a team uses technology to reach fans

Ownership (13.1%): Honesty; loyalty to core players and the local community

Players (14.6%): Effort on the field, likability off it

Stadium experience (9.8%): Quality of arena; fan-friendliness of environment; frequency of game-day promotions

Title track (4.6%): Championships won or expected within the lifetime of current fans

Bang for the buck (18.3%): Wins in the past two years per fan dollar, adjusted for league schedules

Maple Leafs have been the overall last place team just about every year ESPN has done this. I think that's about right, too. Their prices for everything are insane and the on-ice and front office performance has basically been an embarrassment for a whole country. The team should be the Yankees of the NHL, but they are the Knicks.

i think its safe to assume that the flyers sixers and eagles are all missing the playoffs this year which means in late june after the nba finals it will have been two years and two months since the cities last playoff game

two years doesn't seem like a long time but its pretty amazing that a city with four teams could go that long with one of the making the playoffs

not really a singular moment but 102 wins in 2011 was pretty huge....that franchise started in 18 farging 83 and has hit 100 wins only three times ever which is pretty astonishing......cardinals have done it three times in the last ten years

so basically the on-field accomplishments this decade
-phillies winning 100 (then crapping out)
-eagles making the playoffs (then crapping out)

thats all ive got

pretty much but not only were the eagles not good that year they lost to the ultimate dome/home team....I don't even know if id count that year....that year was more about the excitement of chip maybe being a genius than it was making the playoffs...what happened with that?

btw does anyone fall flat at home more than the philadelphia eagles

No. Everything Philadelphia sports related is the absolute worst, and all the hated competitors of Philadelphia teams are the best ever. Cowboys will probably win every game left this season (even though they looked like the second worst team in football when they had Romo against the Eagles, they are now an elite unstoppable team with Dez and Hardy) and push the Eagles right out of the playoffs. So yeah, might as well just write off the Flyers chances of making the playoffs now too, to get an early start on next summer's self-pitying Negadelphian masturbation session.

I like your wording. Worst record could have a 99% chance at #1, but if it's a Philly team, there's a 90% chance that the 1% wins out.

Regardless, if you're going to tank, tank right. Lose em all and leave no doubt.

my friends and I played frisbee football once, and that was when nobody that was around that day had a football.

we corrected that mistake very quickly.

We get that the IOC or FIFA might be the worst of the worst, but you can't watch the NCAA or NFL and then preach about morality when it comes to the IOC and the Olympics.  If you're going to draw a morality line in the sand, then the IOC, FIFA, the NCAA, NFL, Chick Fil A, Coca Cola, McDonald's, and pretty much every other mega corporation in existence all belong on the same side of the line.

Most cities aren't corrupt enough to throw money at four teams while vast swaths of urban land remain mired in extreme poverty.

Interesting question on the fanatic I'll throw it out here (for the 4 for 4ers)...you have to get rid of one Philly sports team but you're guaranteed a championship for the other 3 teams. Which team are you getting rid of?

Title: Re: Random Philadelphia Sports Musings Thread

eagles and its not really close....mostly because i hate the nfl so much....but also you are only losing 16 games....

for sake of this argument id say baseball is invaluable because its the only thing around for a quarter of the year

next id probably get rid of the sixers....as my franchises i like the sixers and flyers equally but i can watch any nba game....where as without the flyers my nhl watching would be severely limited

this is world class nitpicking tho...losing any of them would be beyond devastating

That was a harder question than I thought it would be. I decided on every team at one point, and then changed my mind after thinking about it some more. Ultimately I went with the Sixers because it feels like they've been gone for a few years anyway. A couple years from now I will probably have a different answer.

Would anyone's answer be different if the team was immediately replaced by an expansion team with a different name and no history? I think I'd have to switch to Phillies or Eagles because wiping out Dr. J., AI, Wilt, Moses, etc would be too devastating to what the NBA means to me, I would just be entirely done with basketball.

getting a new franchise doesnt wipe out anything imo...its like taking away paternos wins as if they didnt happen....its so silly

anyway if you are saying the team would be gone and replaced how could not everyone pick the eagles just to get rid of their awful jerseys and colors...flyers and sixers are straight HOF buttery goodness and the phillies are very nice

I mean it's not a matter of make...right after they get picked they go on stage like an NBA player would in their suit but instead of a hat they put in a jersey...shake hands with everyone...the team not the commissioner makes the picks in the NHL...then they leave the stage do the obligatory interview then take the above pic

they had an infield of jimmy grit and choke and a staff with some combination of halladay hamels and lee and won one ws

i mean the franchise is over 130 years old and those first three guys are the best at their respective positions in the history of the team and were all in their prime together

just shows how much luck timing and circumstance is involved in the baseball post season and they proved it by winning their one title with joe blanton brett myers and jamie moyer getting multiple post season starts

QuoteHeads up, Philly sports fans. A museum entirely dedicated to your hobby is coming to South Philadelphia.

What's more, The Museum of Sports will celebrate sports across the United States but will have a particular focus on the history of sport in Philadelphia, officials said in an announcement on Wednesday.

The endeavor will cover 25,000 square feet of space within the Jetro Building at Pattison Avenue and Darien Street, behind the sports complex where the city's four major professional teams play. The project could cost $8-10 million and is set to open in 2019, NBC10 reported.

The museum is spearheaded by a nonprofit led by former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and longtime Philadelphia sports executive Lou Scheinfeld, among others.

A website for the museum states that organizers plan to stock the museum with "world-class collections of priceless memorabilia, a high-tech array of digital and virtual reality activities for families and schools."

Among the museum's attractions will be a vast collection of sports memorabilia from collector Dr. Nicholas Depace, who plans to close his Depace Sports Museum in Collingswood and move his collection into the Jetro Building, according to NJ.com.

Depace is listed as a vice president for the new museum.

The museum is also set to include a theater, a sports-themed restaurant and shops for collectibles and memorabilia.

Rendell is heading fundraising efforts, which are about a quarter of the way toward the $8 million goal, CBS3 reported. Rendell hinted that he may seek a state grant to help foot the bill.

i tend to lean toward kapler being a complete fraud but this makes my bathing suit area feel funny

Kapler spoke to his players Sunday night. He showed video highlights of the Phillies and Eagles championship parades, highlights from the 2008 World Series and highlights of his current players. At one point, Kapler said, some other people had something to say to them. Eagles players Carson Wentz, Zach Ertz and Vinny Curry, 76ers players Ben Simmons and J.J. Reddick, and Flyers center Claude Giroux appeared on the video screen to wish them well on the upcoming season.

I get the same vibe, he's basically a guy selling supplements in late night infomercials. But then again we both thought Pederson was an incompetent buffoon.

My default expectation for the Phillies is doom and gloom and that is usually borne out, but this season I don't have a feel for it, other than the obvious take that they don't have the personnel to be a playoff team. I hope he at least makes it fun. It's a fun time in Philly sports, let's keep the entertainment going through late summer.

you just fire him and hire a regular manager. experiment over.

they will be a super interesting watch just because of all the youth but in baseball 99 out of 100 prospects fail and i expect that to happen for the phils this year

what im going to be watching most is their young pitchers who arent good enough to be starters but have the skill sets to be great relievers.....their bullpen could be epic in the next year or two

Remember Desi Relaford?

If you don't, you certainly know the name now.

Relaford played parts of his first five major-league seasons with the Phillies from 1996 to 2000. The shortstop slashed .234/.315/.328 in red pinstripes for teams that finished in the NL East cellar during three of those five seasons.

He went on to play for six more teams over his final seven seasons.

Let's just say his time in Philadelphia was the worst stop along the way.

Relaford, now 44 years old and the bench coach for the Daytona Tortugas, the Reds' High A affiliate, made that abundantly clear while speaking on "The Jake Brown Show" podcast in an episode that was released Wednesday.

A 1991 fourth-round draft pick of the Mariners who was traded to the Phillies in July 1996, Relaford blasted Philadelphia sports fans and singled out former coach John Vukovich for why he disliked his Phillies playing days. Vukovich, who spent 30 years in the organization and was beloved by many, died in March 2007 from cancer.

Below are some of Relaford's comments, while you can listen to the podcast here. He begins talking about the Phillies at the 18:00 mark.

The fans, they were trash. I have some really good friends there but as fans? Oh yeah, the worst.

It wasn't just me. It's just well known ... not only are they hard, but they're just irrational. They boo just to boo. I saw them boo Billy Wagner one night because he didn't throw 100. He threw 100 a few pitches in a row, they're all excited, he threw 98 and they booed the s--- out of him. Or Scott Rolen hitting two home runs in a game and coming up the last at-bat and not getting a hit and getting booed out of the stadium. Or me getting booed before they even announce my name: 'Now batting, your shortstop, *BOOOOOO*.' I get it, I was scuffling, I'm not saying you can't get booed or fans shouldn't boo. Yeah, if a player deserves to get booed, boo his ass, give it to him. But there's a time and place and it shouldn't just be for any and everything, and especially your home team. I can understand booing your home team, but things should be really, really bad before that happens.

The fan thing, you can kind of tune that out, it's whatever. But when you have to deal with someone on a personal basis, day in and day out — and I was young, I got to the big leagues when I was 21. I'm just trying to fit in, I just want to do my job, man, and instead of them (the coaches) making it easier, it was hard.

There was just a coach (Vukovich) that I dealt with there for a while that made my time there terrible. ... I didn't have a whole lot of fun there, so I don't claim Philly like that.

He made it not fun. Like, it was dumb s---. Just always treated me ultra rookie and I couldn't even be myself. Say if I was in the clubhouse and I was having a good time, talking, being like myself — I'm not shy, I have a good time. I don't know, I'm not loud, but I'm talkative. I move around, talk to different people, whatever, whatever, but if I was being myself and doing that, then I was a rookie and I didn't know my place. And if I was in my locker with my headphones on listening to music by myself, then I wasn't a team-type guy. Or if I was taking groundballs ... say I took 100 groundballs and the last ball, I make a bad throw or whatever, he'd like literally yell at me and tell me I wasn't that good. Or if I went 3 for 4, he would harp on why I didn't get the fourth hit. Like dumb stuff, it was always something.

for all teams to "play" on the same day (april 26/27/28 is the draft), the sixers series would have to go 5/6 and the flyers would have to go 7 or theyd have to win a series

That was on their way to fan fest Saturday. Met both of them. AI is just cool as shtein. Pimp loves everyone. Met Tobias for a moment. Talked to Barrett for a bit, got into about breakfast on broad (rather interesting), and hung out with Tra Thomas for a half hour. Talked to him 2 years ago and he said didn't I talk to you here once. Surprised he remembered some generic random white dude. Tra is the farging man. He went into detail about Simeon Rice and how he was the toughest person to block and how Rice was such a student of the game and knew his technique. I kissed his ass a bit and told him he should be in the hof. Told me some story about FSU but it was open bar and I'd have to think hard to remember what it was. He loves the city and regretted leaving. One of the girls with us ex-bf came with fredex. Talked to him for a bit. Always thought he'd be a douche but he was a good dude.

Flyers are the most interesting of the Philly teams to watch right now thanks to all the new blood (and the Sixers still trying to figure out their offense).

I can't remember the last time that was true because even during the ugly last Chip year, I kinda enjoyed the Sixers tank hitting its deepest, most obscene levels.

seems extraordinarily doubtful considering but if the sixers and flyers make the conference finals, there will be two cracks on 9/13 and 9/20 for all 4 teams to be playing games on the same day

this will never have a chance of happening again

But it's not all bad. The Sixers have won their last four at home, the most recent being when Allen Iverson won a pair of Game 7s on the way to the NBA Finals in 2001.

Post by: QB Eagles on June 21, 2021, 11:26:00 AM
A full offseason of Morey gives me more hope than Klentak ever did. And Embiid individually is better right now than any player in Philly sports was in 2015. His prime will likely be limited due to being a big guy who falls hard 10 times a game, but he's fun to watch. I do think they move Ben which by itself will give the team a new look.

Eagles are in year 1 of a full rebuild and made their most electric draft pick in recent memory. I expect them to be horrid in 2021 but at least they aren't running it back with Doug and the ginger. This year should be interesting to see who emerges as part of the new core. If Hurts or Sirianni impress (neither of which I expect), that's even better.

Phillies are complete trash for the foreseeable future. MDS can tell himself stories about competing in 2024 but we remember him saying that about 2020. The Phillies are bleak. Which is what they've been 90% of my life.

I didn't watch enough Flyers this year to have strong feelings about them, other than that they seemed to underachieve their talent level by a wide margin. If Hart gets his head sorted out and they get even 20% better on defense this can be a solid playoff team. Just statistically it's unlikely they stay so bad on D. Worst thing about this team from my perspective is that they're incredibly boring, which is why I didn't seek out many games as an out-of-market fan.

I am not optimistic about Philly sports right now but if someone wants to believe, they can find grounds to so do (except for the Phillies).

We haven't hit rock bottom yet...wait'll Wentz wins mvp next season and takes the colts to the Sb

Also at that point:
The birds will be 4-12 and Howie will still be in charge
The flyers will be barely .500
The Sixers who cares until the 2nd round
We'll all be looking forward to pitchers and catchers to report so the Phillies can give us another borderline .500 season

It's more a purgatory right now than hell

I am as old as dirt compared to some of you and yes just as pissed off.  No excuse for the catastrophe we just witnessed.  Every time I hear NBA Championship or watch the finals all I can think of is the 1983 Sixers.  That is pathetic.  Coming on 40 years now.  Thankfully I was able to enjoy that 83' team.  Let's not bring up Flyers last Stanley Cup.  Phillies looking bleak as usual (but we all got to celebrate 2008 and I'm still fuming over 2009 WS and 2011 NLDS) and birds actually get a pass with rebuild and SB XVII still very fresh.  It looks as bad as it can get but I have seen some real bad stuff in my decades of cheering for these putzs.  Go look up 1972 sports year in Philadelphia.  Talk about no light at the end of the tunnel.  One of my lowest points was when the bums were swept in the 2007 NLDS by the Rockies.  I remember thinking this team will never win shtein again, won't sniff the playoffs again for a decade.  2008 took me by complete surprise.  I am now thinking the Sixers will be perennial round 2 exit experts, almost worse than not making the playoffs.  The one team that gave us any hope.
And we pray for a 2022 miracle.

the eagles are amazingly probably the best positioned team to be good next. they are 1 year away from having cap flexibility, have 3 1's coming up and have an outside outside chance of already possessing a franchise qb. its not like a good position but its better than the other 3.

sixers flyers phillies are all hopeless unless you are falling for the ben simmons will develop a jump shot trick again

Quote from: Don Ho on June 21, 2021, 10:12:39 PMGo look up 1972 sports year in Philadelphia.  Talk about no light at the end of the tunnel.

I've been doing some deep dives into the truly dark ages of the Eagles lately, the mid 60s through the mid 70s. There was shtein that happened that would cause riots nowadays.

There were trades that can only be explained by Tose owing the wrong people money. I mean trades so bad that I think the NFL head office would outright reject them if tried today, and possibly open an investigation.

In 1971 the Eagles traded two second round picks and their 1972 third round pick for Lions QB Greg Barton, who had thrown one pass in his 3 year NFL career on the Lions bench. Not only that, but Barton was a few weeks away from becoming a free agent. After the trade Barton then became a free agent and signed with the Toronto Argonauts before playing a single down for the Eagles. The Eagles would have been entitled to a compensatory pick under the old system if he had signed to another NFL team, but got nothing for losing the player to the CFL. The team basically set three high round picks on fire for no reason.

In 1974, the Bengals drafted Mike Boryla in the 4th round and he became their third-string QB. A couple months into the 1974 season they flipped him to the Eagles for the Eagles' 1976 FIRST ROUND pick plus an additional sixth-rounder. And the Eagles had Roman Gabriel, so they were bringing in Boryla to be their backup QB.

The Eagles would have been entitled to a compensatory pick under the old system if he had signed to another NFL team, but got nothing for losing the player to the CFL. The team basically set three high round picks on fire for no reason.

even if I was only watching that game  I much rather do it on dvr as it's so much more user friendly moving around and they something on cable than YouTube

yesterday doesn't even register on best city sports days....I'm not even sure the eagles had a good day and the Phillies had an irrelevant  one

and if anything sums up Philly more than the Sixers yesterday I don't know what it is...people consider it a huge win cause they didn't choke a 3-0 series lead

I'm a cynic but jeezus dude it doesn't have to rank in the all time great sports days to be a great day. Going into yesterday none of us thought the Phils would pull off a 4 game sweep, we were all pretty sure the Sixers were making history and not in a good way...and we all had our fingers crossed with the birds. Phils won/Sixers destroyed Toronto in epic fashion and you might not like what the birds did but they're definitely more intriguing heading into the season. It's 60 and sunny in Philly today too. Just washed my suv. ☀️

eagles were fine yesterday...terrible draft good trade

3-0 > 0-3 but nothing that happened yesterday moves the needle at all much less makes it some super amazing sports day....in fact it would have been More interesting had all three lost instead of just the eagles trade up but perhaps I'm just a sports masochist

sixers are on an unofficial final six list of which 1-2 teams in the next couple years will be added to the league....this was their write up in an article breaking down each city....I read them all and I'd say the way I read it it sounds like they have no chance....of the six finalists id say they ranked fourth but San Fran all but seems a lock and Portland seems light years ahead

Philadelphia

When comedian Wanda Sykes guest-hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live last July, Sparks forward Chiney Ogwumike was a guest on the talk show. Ogwumike opened her appearance by calling Sykes a "WNBA real one" and gifting Sykes an Ogwumike jersey. Sykes said, "In my opinion, the WNBA saved our democracy," then asked Ogwumike what could be done to get more people involved and interested in the WNBA.

Her fandom is not just performative. Sources say Sykes, who lives in Pennsylvania part-time, is a part of a group with interest in bringing an expansion team to Philadelphia. Sykes could not be reached for comment. Sources also have connected South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, a Philadelphia native, to the group.

League sources believe Philadelphia has potential as an eventual expansion city, but it would likely mean the involvement of the 76ers — both financially and in terms of an arena. Though 76ers owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer have bought a number of franchises outside of the Sixers, anything linking the 76ers ownership group to a WNBA expansion franchise would be premature, a source said.

While the 76ers play in the Wells Fargo Center, they do not own it and have a lease that runs through 2031. Even if 76ers ownership were to get involved, they do not control dates at the building.

Still, Philadelphia holds lots of appeal. It is the fourth-largest media market in the country and the biggest one in which the WNBA does not already have a team. It has a rabid basketball fan base, with love for not only the 76ers but five local college teams.

Insane ranking for the 22 Phillies. It's way worse than 93. They were up 2-1 in the Series, then got no-hit at home, and guess what... they aren't going back there for a long-ass time. Kids in 2035 who wonder what it'd be like for the Phillies to be in the Series are going to learn about the last time they went and drop the f bomb at their iPad screen when they see how it went down.

The loser Flyers and Sixers seasons shouldn't even be on the list. If you had any belief in those teams going into the season, that's on you.
