(Who is he and what position is he?)
He is a safety who is now a former Saint.
Why are you eating other peoples lunches? STOP IT!
So, is this a good get?
(Get to the choppah!)
meh
I mean, he's better than Chung which isn't saying much. He's only 26 years old and it's not like they're paying a lot or gave him a shteinload of money.
He's good in coverage and can tackle well. Doesn't excel at either. Davis's safeties don't fall into the SS/FS category, his safeties are interchangeable and can play both roles.
And since they're going this route, might as well sign another f/a safety for a similar price.
It sounds so depressing now.
hes replacing nate allen not chung...chung only started like 9 games and wouldnt have had that many if the wolffman didnt get hurt
be interesting to see what they do with the other spot now
but yeah overall not a very overwhelming signing....but for only eight and a half guaranteed its a really good value
Jenkins is a definite upgrade and seems more reasonable than the crazy $$ thrown around so far but he isn't Byrd.
He's got a ring and I have to think that if the Saints weren't in cap hell they would have re-signed his ass.

This is good. Either they really need to upgrade at CB or get a very good rangy FS to compensate.
I know they say their safeties are interchangeable etc. but that wasn't the case last year at all, and they played a lot of single high on passing downs. Even on run downs they were usually staggered by 5 yards or more with Nate taking SS probably 90% of the snaps he played. That said I don't know they're making out better than bringing Allen back. He was pretty up and down but played better the second half of the year except for maybe the last 2 games.
I wouldn't mind bringing Allen back, he was good last year, didn't get beat deep, and will probably sign for cheap since there are so many safeties on the market.

Yeah he will give them range, he played CB at Ohio State and was on the 4x4 relay team. He is just type of player they need. He did struggle his first few years in NO, but really picked it up the last couple years.

Really? I'd think it would be the opposite - that if he is a better corner than he'd be better as a FS centerfield than underneath. If that's true, it underscores a need for them to get a real upgrade at CB as a priority. Wouldn't mind getting Ware for a rushbacker and seeing if they can get one of the top 2 or 3 CBs in the draft. If Dennard should fall or they can get Gilbert they'd actually be in decent shape.
How the farg can NO fit Byrd into their cap?
Lots of lube
I don't care if they signed Malcolm Forbes. Patrick Chung is gone! Praise God! Off season so far, A+.
If Byrd signs with NO I'd think it's because he's not getting nearly the $9 million he was hoping for. Especially since he went in for a visit rather than just getting signed staying at home. With Kenny Vaccaro they don't really need to be spending huge sums on another safety anyway.

welp, there's this play at least
jenkins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvYvU4a0LpQ)
It's basically a good signing. Addresses a need without breaking the bank, and there is upside potential in his game still. The coaches must really like his versatility because the Eagles had him targeted and jumped on him immediately, it's not like this was Plan D after all the safeties they really wanted were scooped up.
Although he did look like at least plan B after they weren't be to land Mitchell before he signed with Pit.
Kinda nice they did want a hard hitting guy though. Maybe Pryor in the draft?

im gonna go with the or not part
gonna be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming few years....saints basically allow their scraps to go to philly while they sign arguably the top FA on the market at the same position...not saying the eagles are wrong or the saints are right but its interesting to see two contenders who just played in the playoffs go about FA is such a different manner
The Saints have also gotten rid of Lance Moore, Will Smith, Jabari Greer, Roman Harper, and Jonathan Vilma, and they are looking to get rid of Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas. They're in the midst of a deep veteran purge that has left them with no one on their defense from the team that won the Super Bowl 4 years ago. Both the Saints and Eagles may have been in the playoffs last year, but the Eagles are building up from scratch on D while the Saints are trying to inject some life back into an older squad that was tied up in a lot of big money contracts.
id say the saints are starting from scratch on D just as much as the eagles if not more....teams are about in the same position which is why its interesting to see one go for a foundation and the other for a complementary piece....especially when the team who got the big time player has less money
the big difference is that the saints already have their 20 million dollar qb on the books whereas the eagles are planning for the future knowing they are going to have to cake off their qb big time in a year...also the saints dont have a ton of elite drew brees years left whereas the eagles have a young qb and can slow roll their play more
Yeah I agree with the Eagles having the ability to build slower. If they legitimately have a window at all, it's staying open longer than the Saints window is. And if Chip and Foles ever get to points in their careers where they are comparable to Payton and Brees (we can dream), the Eagles will have the luxury of taking bigger risks with the rest of their roster just like the Saints do now, because that combination alone is enough to keep them competitive.

Quote from: Diomedes on February 22, 2016, 01:32:40 PM
Good. What's the deal with Thurmond?
It's generally thought that it will be tough to make the numbers work to keep Thurmond. If they are going to do Bradford and Cox this offseason they probably want to line those up first. [Especially the big man since it's not like he's waiting on this year's FA period like Bradford and Thurmond probably are.] Caking off Thurmond now might be a sign that one of those deals isn't going to happen.
Thurmond wants to play CB and that's where the money's at...I doubt he comes back.
problem with thurmond in schwags defense is that he plays an aggressive attacking style meaning that their safeties would be required to press the line more and help with stopping the run...something thurmond is not built for...he was perfect for chips defense that required versatility from the safeties in that they can play man

He's also going to be 29 and looking for the long-term big money final contract like what Jenkins just got. It's probably gonna be another hole on the defense so it sucks to let him walk, but the team has bigger problems to address and less risky deals to get done. JR Reed
Same as Derek Witherspoon. Showed great promise as a KR and then had a leg injury.
At what price does this become a mistake? If another team gets him for $12M per year? $10M?
My point is...maybe it's time regardless what he gets elsewhere?
JR Reed definitely ripped his knee up on the fence but didn't another Eagle do the same...thinking of an LB or safety and they also left their dog tied to a tree or something. Jay help me out here
Damon Moore was the dog tree story no? Whereas JR Reed ripped up his knee running away from a dog and hoping a fence. I think.

I thought Moore had an actual football injury, apart from getting in trouble for leaving his dog tied up to a tree.
Hamner was actually abusing dogs, I think.
And JR Reed...he was jumping the fence, but I don't recall that it was while running from a dog.
Michael Vick was caught running an unlicensed doggie day care and made an example of because he was out da mud and gettin' too cocky.
Moore was the one arrested for abandoning his dog.
Hopefully within the next 3-5 years they can assemble another Lito, Brown, Dawk secondary. You know, kind of like the last descent LB crew they had. You all remember Robinson, Bergey, LeMaster, Bunting when you were in your hampers.
Starting to feel like they may go heavy secondary in this draft ala 2002 - Lito, Sheldon, Lewis. No problem with that.
Moore tore his acl but I think it happened on the field. I thought another player got hurt jumping a fence. Maybe it wasn't an Eagle or maybe the coronavirus is kicking in and I'm hallucinating

pretty clear this was a turn the page move...they wanted to change up the leadership structure of the team
Could've lived with that. He's declined and is old but unless they replace him with someone other than Mills I don't see how you let him walk.
Their secondary is going to be atrocious. Mills sucks at CB. He's going to be a speed bump at Safety.
I actually think Mills will play well at S.
He's not a bad tackler and his coverage deficiencies can be hidden for the most part at S
You're replacing a Pro Bowler with a guy who's never played the position.

Can't really judge not signing him to a similar deal until the rest of free agency plays out. Making such a move would have made other moves unaffordable.

Jenkins was more of a 3rd cb who also roamed...Mills can't cover the slag route for shtein and doesn't have range or closing speed. Nothing about him makes me think he'll be a successful safety. He's best utilized in short spaces like in the redzone.
I don't know how to compare it.
Eagles were on the hook for 7.6 if they picked up his option. Given what he accepted, does the fact they said no thanks mean that he wanted more from the Eagles than from others?
He wanted more years. Howie wants to get younger. 2020 wasn't the problem. 2021 and beyond was. They would have been willing to pay him 7.6 and let him walk after. If Jenkins hadn't already made it known that he wasn't going to play under the terms of the option, that's probably what would have happened.
Salary structures mystify me. A dude like Jenkins has to know he's not very likely to get a bunch of that deal, right? $35M over four years for 32 year old safety. Yeah, right. 36 year old starting safety in the NFL? ha. It's a four year, but it's really just a two year, or something like that. Or at least, that's what the cap heads will say after more details are known..
Is this wrong: Eagles could have kept him by tacking on fake years just like anyone else, the real nut is he wanted a guaranteed payday and Eagles weren't going to give him 17M guaranteed.

pretty clear this was a turn the page move...they wanted to change up the leadership structure of the team
The Eagles would have picked up his option if Jenkins was willing to play at that number.
Can't really judge not signing him to a similar deal until the rest of free agency plays out. Making such a move would have made other moves unaffordable.
well sure but this was their chance to fully turn the page. re-shape the team with carson being the undisputed bmoc.
Still really hate seeing him go.

He's neck and neck with 99 as my favorite all-time Bird.
Best part is he partnered with a black-owned business to feed public servants doing their civic duty. Symbolism and shtein.

This guy was the last player I will ever buy a jersey for and he's out forever now.
Thanks for the ring and for doing something other than being a meathead jock who only gives a shtein about getting paid.
hard agree

Don't read the comments following that column.
Because whew.
I won't but I can only imagine. Mouth breathing racists I'm sure.
As for Malcolm - his hit on Cooks was a beaut. And his off the field activism is admirable.
Maybe nearly as good as Jenkins' bobble head hit on Cooks in SB 52, was Jenkins' smack talk to Brady after he dropped their wannabe philly special pass. On a 'miked up' version he sounded like a disappointed coach reaming Brady out.

First time I watched the nfl films fx I was a bit surprised someone would talk shtein to Brady in the sb but after it sank in I couldn't stop laughing cause his "c'mon Tom" delivery was perfect

The smack on the ass is just the exclamation point
I would guess that's taunting now?
Yeah SD, that's the one. I gave a quick look but couldn't find it. There's not much that Brady would let get into his head, but if there was a play, that was it.

And Hollywood would lose their shtein over it as well.
