Marcus Smith...the biggest disappointment is his lack of effort. He doesn't turn it on and he looked winded after every play. Physically he has the tools but what a quitter.

thats irrelevant at the price a kicker would get...veteran minimum...plus if you only give them a 1 year deal which is all theyd give obviously then it counts against the cap only like 400k....money is only an issue if the birds brass doesnt see a veteran being significantly better than a non veteran...then you go with the young guy I guess....if there was a veteran out there worthy of bringing in and they dominated the incumbent he would be the week 1 guy...plus you save 600k by cutting hennery...either way all this is silly....we are talking about a hundy grand here a hundy grand there...meaningless

Josey had a great game against totally irrelevant competition. Plus the backup OL guys have been tearing defenses open. I would be surprised if the performance put him ahead of Tucker.
the 4th game is exactly for bubble guys to catch on a roster...the competition level doesnt mean anything...in fact chip believes in rookies not going against veterans in the preseason because he doesnt want them overwhelmed and to lose confidence...hes done that with matthews for much of the preseason
anyway josey is clearly a better runner than tucker....the question is is he ready to pass protect....its also not out of the question that polk goes and josey tucker stay...also we dont know the extent of tuckers shoulder injury yet...at least i havent heard anything
I could see the Eagles dropping Polk and going with Josey/Tucker. Not probable because I'm pretty sure they really like Polk and he's done well, but possible.
In my experience, the 4th preseason game is more often a situation where the fanbase gets really excited over some huge performance from an unknown, only to see him get cut two days later. The Eagles have seen plenty of Josey in practice, they know him a lot better than we do. It might also come down to what body type Chip wants for the 4th RB. Another McCoy/Sproles (Josey) or a big back (Tucker).
Ultimately it's 4th RB so who gives a shtein, but it's good to see how strong their depth is. Even on the defense, they've been getting better camp bodies. The preseason has been more about finding the best depth guys and less about patching wide open holes on the team.
Speaking of patching a wide open hole on the team, the fans will revolt if the Eagles don't go with Parkey at K.
theres def some of that associated with the final preseason game...when mike gasperson goes for 110 and a touch in game 4 it doesn't mean shtein...when henry josey does it def means something whether that's for the eagles or another team...what was so interesting last night was that so many guys who have a legit shot at the roster either performed well or didn't (got hurt)...I cant recall the last time the eagles had this many interesting end of the roster decisions
bottom line is you have to show you have the talent and ability to belong in the nfl which josey certainly does....then you have to produce in games which josey has...I wonder if his horrific one in a million knee injury is at all in the back of their minds altho we are almost three years out from that...his comeback alone would have me putting him on the roster but that's why im not an nfl coach

I keep seeing writers say burton is a lock...is that simply cause he wasn't released today or have they been citing "sources" same way sources told them josey was cut
It's sources. The same was said about Polk. I guess the team told both guys or their agents that they made it.
I like keeping Burton. He's shown enough that the risk of losing him is too much. Casey will be gone after this year and maybe Celek too. So in 2015 he'd likely be the #2 TE.

Kind of like RB, there's too much talent at the position. It says a lot that the team felt they needed to hold onto Burton. Honestly I think even Casey would do well if he was actually used.
I would have been happy with burton anywhere on day three of the draft...liked him a lot at florida...great that they got him as a udfa...hes perfect for this offense

This is purely due to Long being injured. I suspect the team was ready to cut ties with Matthews before getting that piece of news. Hopefully they can find someone else on the wire.
I would think that Acho can play better than Matthews. I mean, he is a better LB thats for sure.
Everyone's a broken record with this shtein, but it's true: Chip highly values versatility in backup players. Matthews can play zesty OLB, zesty ILB, and pretty decent special teams. Acho is pretty much an ILB.
Long could have been that versatile guy, and Matthews would have been gone.
There's no justice in this world if Casey Matthews is walking around healthy and employed instead of literally anyone else.

almost 50% of nfl kickoffs result in touchbacks....i don't get the over emphasis on special teams....especially a guy like barner...maybe if you had trindon holliday who is a diff maker and is so far better than anyone on your roster...but christ is barner any better of a KR than josey

smeags could get 60 catches in chips offense so its not like i think matthews is a scrub or anything he will probably have decent production at times but hes about as vanilla as you can get for a WR...hes not gonna separate in this league and hes only gonna get open via chips schemes...the one place he has a chance to shine on his own is maybe the red zone

Not many receivers have the athleticism to gain separation on speed alone. They rely on finding holes in coverage that they can get to. That's why a lot of 1st year receivers struggle, they're used to college where they can just blow by people, in the NFL they can't do that. It takes a year or two to find their niche. Matthews has the tools , it's up to him to do the rest. I have no idea how he's going to do, he definitely stood out among receivers at the camp I watched. Best thing the Eagles did was put him in the slot. His size creates match up problems and it gives him time to learn the nfl.
I'll be happy if he gets 20 catches this year. Thrilled if he pushes out Cooper for a starting spot. Neither of those are important, though, since Ertz is going to go for 100+ catches, 1800 yards.
