not when youre the second coming

tatis would get $30+ a year if he waited 4 years until he free agency, but he could also die or suck or something so taking $24 aav is not a bad idea.

i want to point out 2 things
-he was traded for james shields
-i have him in fantasy for this season AND next for $9 then $16. *applause* *thank you*

That is a first class stadium.  The only problem I had with it was the food choices were ridiculous.  All of that amazing food in Miami and it's nothing but garbage chain offerings.  Beautiful place, though.

I dont disagree at all.  There's an Argentinian steakhouse in Little Havana that will change a vegan's outlook on life, but in a place as amazing as Miami, there's got to be be a better stadium option than Subway.

my favorite thing about this is the lie that atlanta getting the all star game is going to be some massive economic driver for the city

first off the stadium is in the burbs. second its like 2-3 days total, its a pandemic, most of the attendees are local. the bars/restaurants/hotels around the stadium will do better business than normal and thats the extent of it. even in normal cities these games dont really do much of anything economically speaking.

Agreed.

Strikeout
Home run

That's about all we get. Yes pitchers are throwing harder than ever consistently. But the shoot for the fences mentality hurts the game.

I'd cry tears of joy to see small ball be played. It doesn't have to be all the time even. But if you're down a run late rather than have three guys shooting for the moon how about some station to station ball?

the shift has to go for starters but thats not nearly enough....im down to move the mound

lol your love of 1920s baseball is amazing

bunting is never coming back. but yes they need to move the mound back and have more action. the launch angle/velo obsessions are never going away but there is a happy medium where those things can continue to exist while there being more balls in play.

It's not dying but as a cultural force peak baseball was back in the radio era. It's in many ways an ideal sport for radio.

It's never going to have that mindshare again in the US, but it doesn't require it to financially thrive as 30 teams marketing to hundreds of millions of people in the US, Asia, and Latin America.

Safe to say that MLB won't be rigging the game to produce more smallball though. I'm sure their marketing research says bigger faster and dumber is the way to go.

homers are great for business...people love dingers

people do not love strikeouts. thats why you move the mound back, you get more homers, more runs, and more contact.

homers are great for business...people love dingers

people do not love strikeouts. thats why you move the mound back, you get more homers, more runs, and more contact.

People are basically numb to homers now...no one is going to boo a home run obviously but they have mostly lost their excitement...it's akin to three pointers in the nba now...the cheer for them is louder than a two but much more muted than what a three pointer used to get when it was actually considered special

even at their height tho fans would have much rather seen a crooked number rally with guys running all over the bases than a home run or two...there's a reason people say a triple is the most exciting play in baseball

I was talking to a boomer friend recently who is a mad baseball fan.  I occasionally take in a radio broadcast of an Orioles game, and go to Camden Yards once or twice a year, but don't really care a lot about it.

He told me something I didn't know:  40% of the time, the ball is not put in play.  That is, it's either a walk, a strikeout, or a homerun 40% of the time.

No wonder I'm mostly bored by baseball.

The two times I'm most annoyed watching baseball.

1. Tie game.  Bottom of the 9th.  Man in scoring position with no outs.  Batter swings to hit it out of Yellowstone.  Ends up striking out.
2. Whenever Roman Quinn hits.  Ever.

It hurts to watch some of these teams. Actually most of them suck with situational hitting. The Dodgers last night left something like 20 guys on.

I'm watching the Tigers/Royals and they may as well be in t ball with their plate approaches.

Tigers have had runners on all day and can't get them in. I just watched them get a lead off triple...and not score him. Strikeout, check swing roller, strikeout.

Pathetic.

historically the productive out % is somewhere around 33%. meaning 1/3 of the time a player is advanced a base. this year its at 26%, last year was 25%.

i dont know why you love bunting so much but the game is never going back to that. the quality of athlete playing the sport is exponentially better, everyone can hit homers, there are no more light hitting middle infielders/centerfields who "move the runner" and have 650 OPS'

with that said there is a middle ground to strive for! they want to get it what it was in the mid 2000's. think moving the mound back is the only way this can happen.

Not so much hunting but productive outs. Move a runner. Or, like in a lot of games, runner on third less than two outs quit trying to Jack one. Just get the run home.

Speaking of the dead ball era, the Mets are leading the NL East with 57 runs scored, 10 less than every other team in baseball. Now, they've only played 18 games, but I think it's still less on a per-game basis than the rest of MLB.

The offensive juggernauts of the division are the Braves and they had one hit combined in a doubleheader on Sunday.

Most surprising teams to me have been PIT, KC, MIN, SF and CHC. For different reasons.

MIN was supposed to be really good. They've struggled. Same as the Cubbies. Although the Cubs pitching was suspect their offense has been anemic.

The Pirates win total was something like 58.5 and they're at 12 already. And the Royals have been playing some nice ball.

pitchers are throwing faster now....its really hard to hit a baseball

no hitters 200-254 took place over the course of 26 years. no hitters 255-308 have now taken place over 17 years. its tough to precisely quantify since there are more teams and therefore more chances to throw one, but they are happening more often than at any point in history.

Only five teams are more than two games under .500

Miami - 3
Pittsburgh - 4
Colorado - 7
Minnesota - 7
Detroit - 13

Oakland is seven games over and that's the high
Boston, San Fran and St Louis are five over

QuoteThe Nationals are tied for the highest batting average in the NL (.252) and have scored the fourth-fewest runs per game. They are in last place.

i dont know how many times i can say this. hitting for power and accepting strikeouts, in the macro, will get you more runs. no baseball team is going to willingly score fewer runs.

the mariners are a very bad team with what is probably a very bad hitting coach who formulated a very bad game plan against a very bad pitcher. 2+ months into the year there are some wild pitching extremes. its pretty crazy! im sure theyll adjust next year.

this bullshtein has made baseball unwatchable not dirty balls not dead balls...say it out loud: analytics

It's all part of the same thing really. Pitchers have more statistical data on themselves than ever. In training they have instant feedback on what tiny modifications improve their velocity and spin. Their conditioning is dialed in. Their pitch count is dialed in. Their grip is dialed in. And yes, their doctoring is dialed in too.

Sitting here reading some baseball notes and one cites a pitchers SIERA.

Never heard of it.

So I decided to look it up.

https://www.mlb.com/glossary/advanced-stats/skill-interactive-earned-run-average

QuoteFor example, if a pitcher has a high xFIP but has also induced a high proportion of grounders and pop-ups instead of line drives, his SIERA will be lower than his xFIP.

The formula

6.145 - 16.986(SO/PA) + 11.434(BB/PA) - 1.858((GB-FB-PU)/PA) + 7.653((SO/PA)^2) +/- 6.664(((GB-FB-PU)/PA)^2) + 10.130(SO/PA)((GB-FB-PU)/PA) - 5.195(BB/PA)*((GB-FB-PU)/PA)

You shteintin me?

His nephew Zach is going on the IR for breaking his thumb while tearing his own shirt off during a locker room temper tantrum.

I'm curious what actually happened there. Typically robo-calls that look off are curves or breaking pitches that do catch a corner of the zone at one point in their travel but are rarely called by human refs. This one seems like some kind of measurement confusion.

1991 was Kruk in Toronto

1992 was Dutch and Kruk in San Diego

1993 is when we started seeing more obviously bc of that team with Hollins, Dutch, Kruk and Mulholland.

1994 was Duncan, Dykstra, Danny Jackson...and Doug Jones. But I recall PIT more because of Frank Thomas' HR derby that year

1995 was Dykstra, Morandini, Tyler Greene...and Heath...cliff...Slo...cumb

1996 was held in Philly and the only rep was friggin Ricky Bo

1997 was Qurt Schilling

1998 was Qurt Schilling

1999 was Qurt, Lieberthal and Paul "junkball" Byrd

I'll admit I shtein on baseball and think it's extremely boring these days but I watched like half of the game and it was kinda enjoyable.  They should mic the guys up and showcase their personalities more often.

That being said I watched a 45 min tv show on DVR show starting in the 6th inning and also missed like an inning and a half of the game.  Soooo long.

I watched literally one inning of the Phillies game last week because I had bet on it along with the nba game that was playing at the same time. One inning. I missed all of halftime and half of the third quarter of the basketball game.

I can't tell if people "like" baseball as a gag that I just don't get or if they actually like it because they're slow witted morons who think hotdogs are a food group.

Edit: BTW I won both the Phillies bet and the nba bet that night. Parlay, bitches!

It's pretty bad. Not the fault of the current crop of players.

It's nice to have a game on the radio while grilling some burgers, but that's the thing. It's a radio era game. Hard to justify sitting down and actually paying attention to the whole thing with all the entertainment options available in the 2020s.

Jomboy's doing his best to make the game fit the era. He's basically the only one.

I loved listening to games as a kid but I legit can't imagine watching an entire baseball game right now. Any time America is the only place on earth that enjoys a thing you should probably look at it cock-eyed. Nostalgia is the only possible explanation for continuing to watch and defend baseball as a "sport".

I equate baseball fans to deadheads. Like, this thing that you like is very obviously not good or entertaining in any objective way. But you keep insisting against all evidence that WE'RE the ones who don't get it. Just admit that you have a soft spot in your heart for it because you got laid forty years ago during a killer jam sesh (the dead) or that it reminds you of a time that you didn't hate your father (baseball). That would at least make more sense than insisting that baseball is a farging sport.

Those who hate baseball, pay a few extra bucks and sit close to the field of play and watch these guys in person.  After seeing players like Ohtani and the most of the Dodgers roster in person, yes even a few Phillies, it has rejuvinated my love for the sport.

I've watched almost no NFL other than Eagles for years.  The Eagles are an addiction that I can't break.  The NFL is run by the worst of the worst in our society and the players aren't much better either.  There's exceptions, of course, but few worry mentioning.

The phony patriotism is one thing but the "shut up and play" crowd nearly put an end to it for me.

I've said it for so long, it's a broken record... NFL fans are the worst, and sadly, that includes Eagles fans.

Moon landing was at 4:17 EDT (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo/apollo11.html), which is the equivalent of 1:17 PM PDT.  Perry played in Los Angeles that day.

Armstrong's first step on the moon was at 10:56 EDT, which would be 7:56 PM PDT.

Perry played a day game (https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN196907200.shtml) (starting at 1 PM PDT), and hit the home run in the top of the 3rd inning.

The game time was a quick (by today's standards, REALLY quick) 2:27.

So, the Apollo 11 rocket landed about 17 minutes after the scheduled first pitch.

Quote from: MDS on July 11, 2021, 08:29:28 PM
i love kumar...sucks of all the places he goes to its the god damn mets

Meanwhile...

QuoteBarring a drastic change between now and the 5 p.m. ET signing deadline, the New York Mets do not plan to sign right-hander Kumar Rocker, the 10th overall pick in the amateur draft, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.

Rocker, 21, whose dominance at Vanderbilt made him the most well-known college player in perhaps a decade, had an agreement in place to sign for $6 million after he slipped down draft boards earlier this month. But the deal fell apart following his physical examination, and multiple sources said they do not expect a revised one to come together before the deadline.

The possibility of the Mets and Rocker coming to an 11th-hour agreement always exists, and past deals that looked dead were eventually consummated. But the momentum in recent days, and the expectation of multiple sources, is that the Mets are unlikely to change their stance.

Just something that came to my mind tonight watching the Phils that made me look some things up:

1968 is generally considered the (modern) "year of the pitcher."  That year, the league average slashes were    .237/.299/.340.

In 2021, the slashes are .243/.317/.410.

There is a huge difference in HR/game:  1968 = 0.61, 2021 = 1.23

... and also K/game:  1968 = 5.89, 2021 = 8.70

Not much difference in stolen bases/game:  1968 = 0.47, 2021 = 0.45

And teams score more an an extra run per game:  1968 = 3.42, 2021 = 4.53

(All states are per team per game, according to baseball-reference (https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/bat.shtml).

Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021
Post by: QB Eagles on September 19, 2021, 11:00:23 PM
And as shown by the runs per game, K or homer is the more effective offensive strategy.

I would have guessed way fewer SB/game in 2021 given the major decline over the last decade, but '67 was before the numbers originally exploded in the 70s and 80s.

Yep. And they only get NYY/BOS for one night.

But I think if the ChiSox make a run the country would discover their young guys and they'd become superstars. Jimenez, Anderson and Robert. Plus Abreu.

stars in baseball dont really push the needle. you can slap tatis and trout in a promo but nobody is watching for them. what makes mlb go is the popular teams playing in playoff games. thats it thats the list. they need dodgers/yankees every year or its bad news bears. a brewers/chi sox WS would be a complete disaster and create 0 stars from here to the end of time.

I know how old Abreu is. But the ChiSox have zero national exposure. He's been a good player for awhile so he could have a big stage.

And I don't care about ratings. Give me Milwaukee so the Braves or Cardinals aren't in it. I can deal with LA barely. Ideally SF or MIL.

i like it for the 13th inning...play 3 SU then do it to move on with the games. obviously not in the playoffs.

7 inning games i dont like, but in the specific circumstance of these play-in games - it allows you to have 3 games in 2 days. if you win a 7 inning DH it is fair to say you are the superior team.

doing a best of 3 will never happen...tv sked is tight and they dont have the days to do one

its wholly unrealistic since so much of their tv revenue is from the playoffs but with money removed from the equation i would go back to the expansion-93 format. 2 divisions within each league. winners to the lcs. then the world series.

It's the opposite of unrealistic...re seed is a complete no brainer...and they should do a best of 5 not 3....start the season earlier make the schedule less games....shorten the all star break...more double headers...it's so simple and I'm probably not even thinking of ten other things they could do

It's the opposite of unrealistic...re seed is a complete no brainer...and they should do a best of 5 not 3....start the season earlier make the schedule less games....shorten the all star break...more double headers...it's so simple and I'm probably not even thinking of ten other things they could do

im not sure if its fair for the division winners to sit for a week while the WC plays out.

MLBPA would never go for more dh's. shortening the season is wholly unrealistic...they aint giving up money. starting a week earlier is theoretically possible but theyre already starting about as early as they can already.

back in reality they got 7 mil for the yanks/sox game. monster number for baseball. this is what itll always be.

How are you going to farg up a rotation of Scherzer, Urias and Buehler? Oh I know?by getting too cute with pitching and moving guys into roles they aren?t good in.

maybe, and bear with me here, there are finite amount of people who can go 6 innings in a playoff game

the dodgers certainly messed up their arms by using scherz and urias in relief roles but across the sport SP's are going like 3 innings in the playoffs. going from 162 to 60 to 162 hasnt helped but mostly its just so damn hard to navigate lineups when all 9 players have g2g power and hit homers. no more automatic outs like mark lemke you geriatric fossil

Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021
Post by: MDS on October 21, 2021, 12:23:06 PM
or, bear with me, pitchers have to throw harder in order to get hitters (who are demonstrably better now) out and therefore cant throw as often as they used to and have a higher injury rate because of how unnatural a 98mph pitch is to the human arm

if you want baseball to go back to the happy medium of 1992 you need to both put a mph cap AND ban launch angling. good luck doing that.

Launch angling?  Yeah that can farg itself.

Finite amount of SP? Yes.

Finite amount of SP who can pitch 6 god damn innings? Sure. But you know what? If they didn?t treat them as if they?re China dolls then they would maybe, hear me out, pitch longer.

Maybe, hear me out, if they focused on location and off speed and pitching rather than humping it up there at 101 they?d stick around longer.

Guys are making $20-30m a year and if they pitch 6 they?re hailed as some sort of modern day Bob Gibson. If they actually go nine they?re erecting a wing for the guy in Cooperstown.

Sure I?m old school I guess. But whatever ?school? you are in one universal thing should be is that six innings for a starter is shtein.

kerry wood and mark prior. hell look at tommy greene. have a young pitcher throw too often and it will back fire. teams are this careful because the overwhelming majority of pitchers are indeed fragile little china dolls. your nolan ryans and curt schillings are needles in a haystack.

i dont know what to tell you...its not 1987 anymore. this is the game. its not changing. its a little extreme now because of the pandemic season but teams are always going to be very cautious letting SP's go past 100 pitches/3rd time through the order. thats the way its always going to be. you can accept it or put your MAGA hat on and yell about the way things used to be.

And this MLB awards show is frightfully boring.  Don't think I will make it to NL MVP.

EDIT:  Just realized that the Cy Young and MVP aren't being announced tonight.  iceholes.

similar paths for their first years on the ballot...rolen's stock has risen. he's a very very good hitter for a 3B and probably the best defensive player at his position of his generation if not ever (defensive is always a tough gauge and is anecdotal). hes also a humungous bitch who whined his way out of town.

Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021
Post by: SD on January 25, 2022, 08:08:44 PM
I disagree...if you compare Rollins #s with other SS in the HOF who've played over the last 40 years:
Jimmy Rollins is just 1 of 7 shortstops with 2,000 hits and 700 extra base hits
Jimmy Rollins is just 1 of 5 shortstops with 2,000 hits and 400 stolen bases
Only Jimmy Rollins and Honus Wagner have 2,000 hits, 700 extra base hits, and 400 stolen bases
Rollins is the ONLY SHORTSTOP EVER to win an MVP in addition to 4 Gold Gloves
Among shortstops with at least 10 years of service time, Jimmy Rollins ranks second in fielding percentage behind Omar Vizquel
Jimmy Rollins has more runs, hits, doubles, triples, homeruns, and stolen bases than Barry Larkin. He also has 1 more Gold Glove than Larkin.
Jimmy Rollins has more runs, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI AND a better fielding percentage than Ozzie Smith
Jimmy Rollins has more triples, stolen bases, and Gold Gloves than Cal Ripken Jr.
Jimmy Rollins has more triples, and stolen bases than Derek Jeter. He also has a better slugging and fielding percentage than him as well.

I copy and pasted that ^^^^ but winning a World Series and his clutch hits in the NLCS games should also factor in. He deserves to be there just as much as any SS in history
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021

i dont get the positional comps...jimmy's offense is the same as babe ruth or ozzie smith or carlton fisk...hes a dude with a bat just like they were.

jimmys defense was great not special. to even get in the hall argument he needed to be the best defensive SS of his era. he wasnt. its the hall of fame not the hall of very good players
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021
Post by: SD on January 25, 2022, 11:04:24 PM
If you don't get the positional comps there's only 5 SS's who meet the typical hof hitting criteria (there's 30 ss in the hof so by your standard only 1/6 are worthy), 4 with over 3k hits, 1 with over 500 hrs and only one with over 400 (Ripken who also had 3k hits). Rollins has the 2nd highest fielding % all time of any player with over 10 years and would enter the hof as the highest fielding % ss. Please enlighten me how his fielding wasn't special...% is the most accurate way to gauge a SS's defense. 3b, ss and catcher get special treatment because the skill it takes to play those positions is a lot higher than the other position.

jeter stunk at SS but he had an 848 OPS during his 14-year prime...jimmy had a 751. he was also the face of the sport and a part of countless memorable moments. and he farged his way through some prime ny ass and not one tabloid scandal or anonymous quote to the post. HOF

ortiz is a HOFer too, who cares if its first ballot or 10th. 937 OPS, 17 years of production, 151 games and a 1.000 OPS in his age 40 season. theres no doubt.

Do those worst SS in the league have the 2nd highest fielding % ever and 4 GGs too? By any metric I use to include stats and video he's a hofer. By you and Todd's metrics he's not because he's a top 10 all time defensive SS all time not top 5 and his offensive stats aren't good enough even though they're better than 75% of the SS in the hof. Pretty sure you said Dawkins wasn't a hof worthy either. I'm expecting you to double down on that now saying he doesn't belong so go for it.

again fielding percentage is tied to what kinds of balls you can get to...jimmy couldnt get to many balls that the elites could to even make errors...he was a great fielder....its not like im saying he stunk... i dont know why great isnt good enough for you or how you could watch him and think he was elite.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021
Post by: MDS on January 27, 2022, 12:00:24 PM
i think he just read some pro jimmy propaganda about gold gloves compared to some dude from the 70s and fielding percentage which discounts range and counts arbitrary scoring decisions and is running with it.

jimmy's dWAR, which factors in UZR (ultimate zone rating, basically how much ground you cover) and the other rudimentary bs referenced, was 15.9 for his entire career. peaked at 2.5 in 2005, his athletic prime area. vizquel was a 29.5. andrelton simmons is at a 28.1. ozzie was a 44.2. troy tulowitzki is a 17.

defensive stats are not perfect but this gives you a sense that jimmy was a great fielder but not an elite one. nothing wrong with it.

Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021

I compared his overall career to other ss in the hof and he's worthy. I'm still waiting to hear an argument his body of work isn't better than 75% of SS's in the hof. lol at you saying in one post "stats mean nothing watch the game" then throwing a bunch of sabremetrics at me.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2021
Post by: MDS on January 27, 2022, 03:55:36 PM
you cannot possibly expect anyone to take fielding percentage or gold gloves seriously...like i said defensive metrics are suspect but dwar is roughly as close as it gets. you cant tell a defensive story without uzr.

im not gonna go through ever primary ss in the hof and comp jimmy's numbers to them, i dont care. you watched him play every day for a decade like i did. if you saw a hof player you and i were watching different sports

the only owners that really want early season games are those that have a big season ticket base and/or have a monster local tv deal. its like 5 teams, im not even sure the phillies are in this.

the owners figured out during the covid year they can cash in with fewer games and fewer paydays so long as they hit the postseason tv deal which is where a bulk of the revenue comes in. this is what its all about.
