I consider myself a Christian, you'll never see me trying to convert anyone and I avoid Church like the plague but when you seperate the cultural bullshtein that's become Christianity and get down to the reason humans are on Earth I haven't found a better explanation than the one I've found in the New Testament. I've studied the rise of Christianity from the time it was practiced underground to Constantine to Martin Luther. I think Martin Luther got it right with the Protestant Reformation. In my opinion religion should have no place in politics. I think more people should practice what Jesus actually taught than they should the other supersticious nonsense.

I realize I just left myself open to being mocked and dridicule so I'll throw this out there: Why does a planet like Earth that's full of life exist in the middle of nowhere? Why are we here? How did we get here? If you don't believe in a religous reason that's more than fine, but I'm curious to what other people believe. I'm a believer in the Big Bang. At some point comets struck the Earth, water was formed, life came from water, we evolved. So I guess there's a start.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't on the edge of my seat waiting for Dio's answer.

SD, that pretty much sums up my thoughts. I really could care less about the way others believe. I am not mocing them, they don't need to mock me. There is plenty of other stuff to mock me about. People like Dio mock fundamentalists and zealots with a fervor showing that anti-religion is actually their religion.

I do not deny the possibility of a God. If anything the more you study science and how things relate to everything the design just brings more questions. I do however think that most organized religion is based on stories some based on historical fact and some grand superstitious mumbo jumbo. I have no more proof of anything then anyone else and my thoughts on the subject work for me and are not meant to discredit what anyone else thinks or believes.

Do I think someone died for our sins? No. If they did it's not really gotten us anywhere. We're the same messed up collection of misfits we were 2000 years ago.

I don't believe any of this was just an accident...I think some sort of higher power had a hand in it. But I believe religion has made a mockery of whatever God there is.

Anybody who really believes that God cares how much sex someone has before they get married is not only ignorant, but arrogant. God is presumably a supreme being with an entire universe to work with and create humans and whatever such creatures he wants on any planet he wants....What really makes you think he gives a damn about you outside being part of his life experiment?

The ones that say that people don't believe in THEIR religion, are "going to hell", really get me going. God created us with a higher level of thinking, an ability to question and wonder....and he's going to send the majority of us to eternal damnation because we USED that gift? Hah. Nice.
Of course, when I bring that point up, I get the classic "That's just what I beleive, what I was taught."
Sweet. White people in the South were taught to hate black people and believed they were lower level human beings. Doesn't make it true, OR okay to believe.

I believe in an after life...I am not sure, however, if I believe in heaven or hell.

Us vs. them, boogeyman centric religion is bad.  Using faith in place of (or in spit of) logic and reason is bad.  Still, there is a place for community oriented spirituality in this world.

Quote"We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote

        * The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
        * Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
        * Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
        * A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
        * The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
        * The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all;
        * Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."

Religion is fascinating in theory. As something to study, it is the height of intellectual pursuit. Its possibilities endless.

In the real world it's simultaneously boring and infuriating.

Similar to politics, actually.

Yeah, there's no way I could possibly disagree with this more. These things are all finite. Religion offers the possiblity of the infinite. It's no comparison.

Philosophy is essentially religion, without the mystical voodoo hocus pocus. More courage and faith is required for religion. Philosophy is for people who think they're too smart for religion and are actually too dumb to see that they are essentially the same thing.

More courage?  Ha.

They both amount to mental masturbation if you keep at them longer than a couple years in your youth.  Nothing terribly high brow about spending decades diddling yourself with books about god worship or the nature of being.

vigy is onto something there.  What's the difference between Harry Potter fantasy tales and god worship fantasy tales?

Not farging much.

Let the Potterites have some time to study it, create a library of theories and essays on it, gain a bunch of converts and presto...Harry Potter joins the ranks of the highest intellectual pursuits.

It's all bullshtein.  Potter, Odin, the great Spirit, the Bible.  Utter bullshtein, propped up by ages of habit and so called academia.

the study of weather is far more intellectually challenging than the study of god worship, that's for farg sure.

weather is some complicated, fact based shtein.  religion is simple mumbo jumbo made to seem complicated by "people of faith" twisting their dick brains into pretzels to explain and understand imaginary shtein.

Historically speaking and from an anthropological perspective it is very intellectual. Don't worry sodomites. Your not validating it by admiting that it is a facinating study of the human condition.

Well it's academic.  I don't know how intellectual it is.  And yes, it's fascinating in a "see how they run" kind of way.  But I don't consider it anything like the highest form of intellectual pursuit.
Title: Re: The religion thread.
Post by: Cerevant on January 26, 2009, 09:49:46 PM
Yeah, I think RJS is thinking more of sociology than religion, although the two are closely tied.

Playing devil's advocate, what makes a religion bad? (hows that for irony?)
- Bogey-man god figure?
- Scripture?
- Rituals?
- Moral guidance?
- Evangelism?
- Social community?

Therefore, by extension, can you eliminate what is "bad" about religion, yet still have religion?
Title: Re: The religion thread.
Post by: shorebird on January 26, 2009, 10:01:56 PM
The only bad thing about religion is those who want to cram it down your throat and think your evil and blastphamist if you don't conform to their way of balling like a baby with your hands in the air and throwing yourself down rolling across the floor every Sunday. I luv the way people who go to church on Sunday make them think it gives them the right to look down their noses at you because you want to drink beer and smoke cigars. My ex in-laws were holy rollers like that.

Otherwise it's harmless.

Post by: Diomedes on January 26, 2009, 10:13:01 PM
Social community is easily the thing on that list that pops out to me as the principle benefit to believers and society generally, so long as we define it as social and not military or political.  Insofar as reglious groups involve themselves in military and political concerns, the result is universally bad.

But as a social community, I'm not as critical.  Church communities do a hell of a lot of good, that I don't deny.  The soup kitchen I volunteer with is full of them.  I rather enjoy it when we all introduce ourselves, most of these people telling me they go so such and such parish or synagogue.  I tell them I'm there as an atheist from a community of one, and I enjoy the puzzled looks I get.  They literally feed 500 to 800 homeless and working poor every day, straight out of churches in the area.  It's a community thing for them.  They enjoy giving some help to people and it's an excuse for them to get together.  Nothing wrong with that.

Unfortunately it has to be said that without church, without believing in magic, these people would not likely be enjoying community companionship, or helping anyone.

People suck.

I like the idea of telling atheists they ought to speak up.  It would be great fun for the Super Bowl winning QB to say, "thanks to my team and my awesome arm for winning this game, God had nothing to do with it, we won it ourselves."  Of course, he'd be censored and lynched by the so-called liberal media, and then possibly lynched in real life by the religious zealots.  And of course, it's not gonna happen.

I too like to mock superstitious people.  That's what this thread is all about.  But I stop short of paying to see someone do it.  I wouldn't pay to see someone shoot fish in a barrel.

we have constant door-to-door solicitations in my neighborhood.  everything from encyclopedias to grass seed.  i just happened to have 2 show up at the same time.  some white lady and her daughter trying to sell me jesus and a mexican trying to sell me fertilizer.

ironic, ain't it?

Last Saturday two of the hottest hispanic chicks I've ever laid eyes on knocked on my door to see if I wanted to listen to some sermon in Spanish. I took the flier then fantasized about banging them for the rest of the day.

Catholicism, by comparison, is an incredibly liberal faith. (http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-rutten25-2009apr25,0,2222655.story) Putting a top priority on helping the less fortunate is what differentiates Catholicism from other forms of Christianity. This country's obsession with abortion threatens to change that.

why cant all zealouts be this practical....

"A physician acting in good faith to save a pregnant woman's life, and using his or her best medical judgment, should not be subject to later criminal prosecution," said Sebelius, explaining why she vetoed the bill. She is a practicing Catholic who personally opposes abortion. She argues, however, that such opposition does not relieve her of a legal obligation to veto legislation she thinks is unconstitutional."

http://www.youtube.com/v/VATb8PwzbDk&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0

Translated into English:

Quote
The Eggs of Satan

Half a cup of powdered sugar
One quarter teaspoon of salt
One pinch Turkish hashish
One half pound of butter
One teaspoon of vanilla sugar
One half pound of flour
150 grams ground nuts
A little extra powdered sugar
... and no eggs

Place in a bowl
Stir in butters
Mix in ground nuts and
Knead the dough

Mold into Eye Ball sized balls
Roll in the powdered sugar and
Say the magic word
Abracadabra

Put on a greased griddle and
Bake for fifteen minutes at two hundred degrees
and NO EGGS

Bake for fifteen minutes at two hundred degrees
and no eggs..

Today, Rep. Randy Forbes of Virginia, the Founder and Chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, and twenty-four other members of the House of Representatives, co-sponsored a resolution in Congress that would "affirm the rich spiritual and religious history of our Nation's founding and subsequent history and express support for designation of the first week in May as America's Spiritual Heritage Week for the appreciation of and education on America's history of religious faith."

The resolution, H.RES. 397, would put Congress on record as "recognize[ing] the religious foundations of faith on which America was built are critical underpinnings of our Nation's most valuable institutions and form the inseparable foundation for America's representative processes, legal systems, and societal structures."

In addition, the resolution "rejects, in the strongest possible terms, any effort to remove, obscure, or purposely omit such history from our Nation's public buildings and educational resources" and justifies the need to keep "under God" in the pledge.

Nah, you guys got it all wrong. The problem isn't with Jesus, it's with the people that came after him. Jesus performed a miracle by turning water into wine at a wedding when the vino ran dry and before people were too blitzed to walk. I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to do the same thing with Makers Mark, so tell me you wouldn't want him at the next tailgate.

If you believe the Da Vinci code, he knocked up Mary Magdalene. He also reformed the money chislers and pompus clerical hiearchy.

Probably right about the Birkenstocks, but that's a pretty small price to pay for a world religion that rightfully has drinking and hookers as its basis.
Title: Re: The religion thread.

i guess that's all true if you believe the da vinci code.....which i don't, other than the part about the catholic church being nothing more than the mafia hiding behind a cross.  i don't know if the whole mary magdalene thing is true or not.

what i do think is that jesus was the world's first great magician/con man.  maybe he pulled some david copperfield type shtein with the whole water to wine trick or something like that.  and people just bought into it. i dunno.  but one thing is for certain and it's that nearly every story about jesus is nothing more than a tall tale that spun out of control for years and years until someone actually put it in writing.

sorry bible thumpers, but the story of your jesus is no more true than paul bunyan or santa claus.

I only got an 8.  Not surprising though because even when I was a "practicing" christian, I was never really interested in actually learning about any of it.  I just wanted to go through the motions so I could get into heaven.  And that's probably why agnostics/atheists know more about religion....I think there's a hell of a lot of people who claim to be religious but really aren't.  They just go through the motions as well out of fear of going to hell.  And they pray whenever they play the lotto.  But whatever, I don't need to know everything about religion to know that it's not for me.

that quiz has very little to do with religion in terms of needing to practice it or care about it to know the answers...its mostly just common knowledge...you dont need to practice any religion to know that pakistan is a muslim country moses parted the red sea and you cant have a prayer service in public schools

i got 9

Not the point of my post, but anyway....

link (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Were_any_of_the_founding_fathers_atheists)

QuoteNone of them were atheists, they were however all secualrists (meaning they believed that church and state should be seperate, to each his own.) but the personal beliefs of the founding fathers fell into three religious categories: first, the smallest group, founders who had left their Judeo-Christian heritages and become advocates of the enlightenment religion of nature and reason called "Deism" like Thomas Paine and Ethan Allen who believed in a supreme being who laid the foundations of the universe but doesn't intervene to break its' laws (meaning in the Deist' point of view it is unreasonable to believe in a personal god or believe in the existence of miracles which defy natural laws) The second largest group consisted of the founders who remained practicing Christians. They retained a supernaturalist worldview, a belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ, and an adherence to the teachings of their denomination. These founders included Patrick Henry, John Jay, and Samuel Adams. The largest group , consisted of founders who retained Christian loyalties and practice but were influenced by Deism. Like John Adams, George Washington, James Monroe and Benjamin Franklin.

BUT, that TJ quote was one I've nver heard of, so I ask you about your crack of not talking about something. If I'd never have brought it up, how would I have ever know about that quote?(even if I can't find it and you know usually when posting something like that a link would do well to back it up.)

OK, so for everyone who got most/all right on the NY Times religion quiz, you can try this harder one. Spoiler alert: answers are at the bottom. Also, it was a little unfair, two questions have "all of the above" as the answer, though it isn't clear anywhere that's an option. Anyway, see if you can get into heaven (and maybe cop 72 virgins - which really isn't that many if you're thinking in terms of eternity)

QuoteTest Your Savvy on Religion
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Time for a pop quiz.
The New York Times reported recently on a Pew Research Center poll in which religious people turned out to be remarkably uninformed about religion. Almost half of Catholics didn't understand Communion. Most Protestants didn't know that Martin Luther started the Reformation. Almost half of Jews didn't realize Maimonides was Jewish. And atheists were among the best informed about religion.

So let me give everybody another chance. And given the uproar about Islam, I'll focus on extremism and fundamentalism and, as you'll see, there's a larger point to this quiz. Note that some questions have more than one correct choice; answers are at the end.

1. Which holy book stipulates that a girl who does not bleed on her wedding night should be stoned to death?
a. Koran
b. Old Testament
c. (Hindu) Upanishads

2. Which holy text declares: "Let there be no compulsion in religion"?
a. Koran
b. Gospel of Matthew
c. Letter of Paul to the Romans

3. The terrorists who pioneered the suicide vest in modern times, and the use of women in terror attacks, were affiliated with which major religion?
a. Islam
b. Christianity
c. Hinduism

4. "Every child is touched by the devil as soon as he is born and this contact makes him cry. Excepted are Mary and her Son." This verse is from:
a. Letters of Paul to the Corinthians
b. The Book of Revelation
c. An Islamic hadith, or religious tale

5. Which holy text is sympathetic to slavery?
a. Old Testament
b. New Testament
c. Koran

6. In the New Testament, Jesus' views of homosexuality are:
a. strongly condemnatory
b. forgiving
c. never mentioned

7. Which holy text urges responding to evil with kindness, saying: "repel the evil deed with one which is better."
a. Gospel of Luke
b. Book of Isaiah
c. Koran

8. Which religious figure preaches tolerance by suggesting that God looks after all peoples and leads them all to their promised lands?
a. Muhammad
b. Amos
c. Jesus

9. Which of these religious leaders was a polygamist?
a. Jacob
b. King David
c. Muhammad

10. What characterizes Muhammad's behavior toward the Jews of his time?
a. He killed them.
b. He married one.
c. He praised them as a chosen people.

11. Which holy scripture urges that the "little ones" of the enemy be dashed against the stones?
a. Book of Psalms
b. Koran
c. Leviticus

12. Which holy scripture suggests beating wives who misbehave?
a. Koran
b. Letters of Paul to the Corinthians
c. Book of Judges

13. Which religious leader is quoted as commanding women to be silent during services?
a. The first Dalai Lama
b. St. Paul
c. Muhammad

Answers:
1. b. Deuteronomy 22:21.
2. a. Koran, 2:256. But other sections of the Koran do describe coercion.
3. c. Most early suicide bombings were by Tamil Hindus (some secular) in Sri Lanka and India.
4. c. Hadith. Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet to be revered.
5. All of the above.
6. c. Other parts of the New and Old Testaments object to homosexuality, but there's no indication of Jesus' views.
7. c. Koran, 41:34. Jesus says much the same thing in different words.
8. b. Amos 9:7
9. all of them
10. all of these. Muhammad's Jewish wife was seized in battle, which undermines the spirit of the gesture. By some accounts he had a second Jewish wife as well.
11. a. Psalm 137
12. a. Koran 4:34
13. b. St. Paul, both in 1 Corinthians 14 and 1 Timothy 2, but many scholars believe that neither section was actually written by Paul.

Pissing cold lava is no joyride either. Much chunkier.

But pissing warm lava feels just right. Unfortunately for goldilocks, the three bears came back home from the free clinic a tad early, saw her in their bathroom, mauled her, and ate her.

QuoteFalling ice injures several outside Cowboys Stadium
Posted by Mike Florio on February 4, 2011, 4:02 PM EST

Several people were injured (or worse) during the construction of Cowboys Stadium.  Two days before the venue hosts its first Super Bowl, several people were injured by ice falling from the roof.

According to the Dallas Morning News, up to seven were struck by ice sliding from the roof and falling onto the ground below.  Five have been hospitalized, and one of the victims is in critical condition.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy has confirmed to the Dallas Morning News that injuries have occurred.

"The ice and snow melting off of the Cowboys Stadium roof has caused several sliding snow falls onto the plazas," McCarthy said via e-mail.

Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that helicopters are being used to catch some of the falling ice.

what is the difference btwn christians and jews as far as jesus goes....they both believe in him i think...but where they differ is whether he rose up in the air and went to heaven...is this accurate??

Christians believe that Christ is God incarnate, come to earth to save humanity from its sin.

Most modern Jews believe either that Christ was a teacher and a "good man," but not God, or don't believe he existed at all, or don't give a rip either way.

Ancient Jewish leaders (the Pharisees according to the bible) believe him to be a political nuisance and a threat to their power - hence the execution.

Simple explanation:  Jesus proclaimed himself as the son of god and king of the jews.  The jews that believed him formed christianity.  The ones that didn't had him crucified.

That wasn't really a strongly worded answer.

At the time, I'm sure there was much resentment and hatred towards him, otherwise they wouldn't have murderdeathkilled him.  At the same time, I don't really think Jews are carrying a lot of hatred towards him today.  He's not in their teachings and I don't think they sit around the dinner table saying things like "Hey....remember that time we killed Jesus?"  Todd could answer this better, but I don't even think there's really any mention of him is there?  Jews pretty much stop with the old testament and Jesus wasn't introduced until the new testament, right?

Fun fact:  Jesus' crucifixion was the site of the world's first t shirt stand.

Yes, he was addressed as rabbi or rabonni, a term for one who is a distinguished theologian and religious leader.

QuoteAt the time, I'm sure there was much resentment and hatred towards him, otherwise they wouldn't have murderdeathkilled him.

I think it would be more correct to say he was  loved by the Jews a charismatic teacher. It was because of this Rome saw him as a threat for insurrection and the Jewish religious orthodoxy saw him as a threat to their political control and hypocrisy, and arranged to have him tried and killed.

Today I don't think there is much hate toward Jesus by Jews, but I don't know if the same can be said necessarily about Christians, particularly evangelicals who see it as their duty to convert Jews (and everyone else for that matter) 'for their own good.' It's an interesting dynamic though because there are many of the Christian right who are a driving force behind the financial and military support of Israel as a free state.

Interesting thought, I don't know. If history went down such that the Jews got to Hitler and brutally killed him, I doubt they would have much objection to its graphic depiction (like a lot of Americans would love to see the pics of Bin Laden). Of course that's on it's own unique level. On the other hand, Hitler is almost universally reviled where as Jesus gets a lot of love, even from Muslims, Buddhists etc.

The Essenes (Dead Sea Scrolls) were vegans. Many believed Jesus was an Essene because they both hold the same beliefs. There are some ancient texts that point to Jesus possibly being an Essene.

I'm beginning to think there might be something to this being vegan, as I remember the story of God raining down manna from heaven to feed the people. He could of just as easily rained down cheese steaks upon them, which would have been awesome, but He didn't and there must be a reason for this.

no, he explains how the translation of the texts were misinterpreted by Matthew. The last few minutes he goes into peoples understanding of God and how ridiculous it is to say you're going to be punished because I understand the bible this way and if you don't then you're wrong...and how could you possibly understand God if you're not God. He also goes into how the country pulled back from religion during Clinton/Gore years and how prosperous we all were during that time because we didn't have to deal with religion tied into politics. His explanation of why people are so anti-religion is also spot on. It's like this guy is reading my mind.

but when you try to outreason them in that way its a back door way of saying that a vigin birth could exist but that it just didnt happen in this case....to me thats being as nuts as the zelouts...instead of saying this is why the vigin birth didnt happen you should say its physically and medically impossible for a virgin birth to happen nd if you think it did you are a friggin lunatic

Even if you don't believe Jesus is the son of God and all the other stuff the historical Jesus is pretty well documented. Saying "I don't believe Jesus existed" is pretty much the same as saying "I don't think Alexander the Great existed" by your reasoning.

Jesus was an extremely common name 2000 years ago so that is absolutely correct.

Here's a bit about the historical Jesus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_Jesus

I work with a guy who thinks the Earth is only 6000 years old. What's funny is if you talked to him for 10 minutes there's no way you'd think he believed all of that nonsense.

We always farg with him but he takes it in stride. Deep down I think he knows it's a bunch of bullshtein but puts up a front because he's brainwashed into thinking he needs to believe certain things. We always farg with him about dinosaurs and stuff.

QuoteThis will give you the chills.........
    GOOD chills.

A young man had been to Wednesday Night Bible Study.

T he Pastor had shared about listening to God and obeying the Lord's voice

The young man couldn't help but wonder, 'Does God still speak to people?'

After service, he went out with some friends for coffee and pie and they discussed the message. Several different ones talked about how God had led themin different ways.

It was about ten o'clock when the young man started driving home. Sitting in his car, he just began to pray, 'God...If you still speak to people, speak to me. I will listen. I will do my best to obey.'

As he drove down the main street of his town, he had the strangest thought to stop and buy a gallon of milk.

He shook his head and said out loud, 'God is that you?' He didn't get a reply and started on toward home.

But again, the thought, buy a gallon of milk.

The young man thought about Samuel and how he didn't recognize the voice of God, and how little Samuel ran to Eli.

'Okay, God, in case that is you, I will buy the milk.' It didn't seem like too hard a test of obedience. He could always use the milk. He stopped and purchased the gallon of milk and started off toward home.

As he passed Seventh Street , he again felt the urge, 'Turn Down that street.'

This is crazy he thought, and drove on past the intersection.

Again, he felt that he should turn down Seventh Street ...

At the next intersection, he turned back and headed down Seventh.

Half jokingly, he said out loud,
    'Okay, God, I will.'

He drove several blocks, when suddenly, he felt like he should stop He pulled over to the curb and looked around. He was in a semi- commercial area of town.. It wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst of neighborhoods either. The businesses were closed and most of the houses looked dark like the people were already in bed.

Again, he sensed something, 'Go and give the milk to the people in the house across the street.' The young man looked at the house. It was dark and it looked like the people were either gone or they were already asleep. He started to open the door and then sat back in the car seat.

'Lord, this is insane. Those people are asleep and if I wake them up, they are going to be mad and I will look stupid.' Again, he felt like he should go and give the milk.

Finally, he opened the door, 'Okay God, if this is you, I will go to the door and I will give them the milk If you want me to look like a crazy person, okay. I want to be obedient. I guess that will count for some thing, but if they don't answer right away, I am out of here.'

He walked across the street and rang the bell. He could hear some noise inside. A man's voice yelled out, 'Who is it? What do you want?' Then the door opened before the young man could get away.

The man was standing there in his jeans and T-shirt.... He looked like he    just got out of bed. He had a strange look on his face and he didn't seem too happy to have some stranger standing on his doorstep. 'What is it?'

The young man thrust out the gallon of milk, 'Here, I brought this to you.' The man took the milk and rushed down a hallway..

Then from down the hall came a woman carrying the milk toward the kitchen. The man was following her holding a baby. The baby was crying.. The man had tears streaming down his face.

The man began speaking and half crying, 'We were just praying .. We had
some big bills this month and we ran out of money.. We didn't have any milk for our baby. I was just praying and asking God to show me how to get some milk.'

His wife in the kitchen yelled out, 'I ask him to send an Angel with some.. Are you an Angel?'

The young man reached into his wallet and pulled out all the money he had on him and put in the man's hand. He turned and walked back toward his car and the tears were streaming down his face.
He knew that God still answers prayers.

THIS IS A SIMPLE TEST....... If you believe that God is alive and well, send this to at least ten people and the person that sent it to you!!!!
This is so true. Sometimes it's the simplest things that God asks us to do that cause us, if we are obedient to what He's asking, to be able to hear His voice more clear than ever. Please listen, and obey! It will bless you (and the world)... Phil 4:13
This is an easy test - you score 100 or zero. It's your choice.

If you aren't ashamed to do this, please follow the directions... Jesus  said, 'If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father.'

    Not ashamed...Pass this on.

Freedom of  religion is kind of a consolation prize for me.  I'd just as soon see everyone be free from religion.  But that ain't happening anytime soon so the best I can hope for is that all of these zealots develope a tolerance for each other and understand that they need to keep their preaching confined to the inner 4 walls of their church.

Of course, that ain't happening either so I guess I'm farged.
Title: Re: The religion thread.
Post by: Diomedes on October 24, 2011, 10:55:27 PM
The religion in our government which ought to be of real concern is not a morning prayer in school.  It's the money flow from church to government, it's people, the people who leave government in order to lobby on behalf of relgion, etc.

Why have there been no serious criminal investigations of priests who have allowed rapists to play with their parishioners' children?  We seem to have a hard on for nailing the mormon child rapists, why not the catholics?

If mega churches want to influence politics, how about they pay taxes?
Title: Re: The religion thread.
Post by: Sgt PSN on October 24, 2011, 11:12:05 PM
I agree with that completely.  I don't care if schools offer a "moment of silence" so to speak, so kids can say a prayer if they want to and the ones who don't pray can daydream about the hot chick/dude sitting next to them.  I just don't want them calling it "prayer time" though.

I also don't want politicians referring to their bible when it comes to passing, preventing or proposing laws in this country.  I want them referring to the Constitution and Bill of Rights.  It's laughable that politicians still try and point to their religion as a source for their morals.....as if they actually have morals.

Post by: ice grillin you on October 25, 2011, 08:45:21 AM
how about keep it out of life period

why cant people just base their morality on the mantra "because its just the right thing to do"

when you start basing it on religion you start hearing things like the bible says gays are amoral are going to hell...all it is a cult...and cults are no place to base your morality
Title: Re: The religion thread.
Post by: Eagles_Legendz on October 25, 2011, 02:30:44 PM
Not arguing with that but people I don't give a farg how they come to their ideas of morality so long as they aren't pushing it on me and it stays out of the govt.  People can say the flying spaghetti monster gives them their moral compass so long as they act within the law.  Doesnt matter at all to me.  It isn't my place to tell them they can't believe just like it isn't their place to tell me I have to.  When they start doing that its crossed just believing what they want to believe.

Quotehttp://Twas the Month before Christmas

Twas the month before Christmas

When all through our land,

Not a Christian was praying

Nor taking a stand.

See the PC Police had taken away

The reason for Christmas - no one could say.

The children were told by their schools not to sing

About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.

It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say

December 25th is just a ' Holiday'.

Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit

Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!

CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-Pod

Something was changing, something quite odd!

Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa

In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.

As Targets were hanging their trees upside down

At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.

At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears

You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.

Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty

Are words that were used to intimidate me.

Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen

On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton!

At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter

To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.

And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith

Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace

The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded

The reason for the season, stopped before it started.

So as you celebrate 'Winter Break' under your 'Dream Tree'

Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.

Choose your words carefully, choose what you say

Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS,

not Happy Holiday!

Please, all Christians join together and

wish everyone you meet

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Christ is The Reason' for the Christ-mas Season!

If you agree please forward, if not, simply delete.

Quote(Reuters) - Enraged Chinese shoppers pelted Apple Inc's flagship Beijing store with eggs and shoving matches with police broke out when customers were told the store would not begin sales of the popular iPhone 4S as scheduled.

Apple said later Friday after the botched launch at its store in Beijing's trendy Sanlitun district that it would halt all retail sales of the latest iPhone in China for the time being, but said the phones would be available online, through its partner China Unicom or at official Apple resellers.

Scuffles broke out before daybreak between security staff and shoppers, many of whom had waited in line overnight in sub-freezing weather, after an announcer with a bullhorn told the restless crowd around 7 a.m. that the phones would not go on sale as planned and that they should go home.

Police dragged some people away and photos appeared on the Chinese blogosphere of a man who had brought raw eggs in a plastic bag handing them out before people heaved them at the store's tall glass windows.

"We're suffering from cold and hunger," a man in his 20s shouted to Reuters Television. "They said they're not going to sell to us. Why? Why?"
(for some reason I imagine the man saying that last line in English with a thick Chinese accent)

Quote
Me: God, can I ask You a question?
God: Sure ...
Me: Promise You won't get mad ... ...
God: I promise
Me: Why did You let so much stuff happen to me today?
God: What do u mean?
Me: Well, I woke up late
God: Yes
Me: My car took forever to start
God: Okay
Me: at lunch they made my sandwich wrong & I had to wait
God: Huummm
Me: On the way home, my phone went DEAD, just as I picked up a call
God: All right
Me: And on top of it all off, when I got home ~I just want to soak my feet in my new foot massager & relax. BUT it wouldn't work! Nothing went right today! Why did You do that?
God: Let me see, the death angel was at your bed this morning & I had to send one of My Angels to battle him for your life. I let you sleep through that
Me (humbled): OH
GOD: I didn't let your car start because there was a drunk driver on your route that would have hit you if you were on the road.
Me: (ashamed)
God: The first person who made your sandwich today was sick & I didn't want you to catch what they have, I knew you couldn't afford to miss work.
Me (embarrassed):Okay
God: Your phone went dead bcuz the person that was calling was going to give false witness about what you said on that call, I didn't even let you talk to them so you would be covered.
Me (softly): I see God
God: Oh and that foot massager, it had a shortage that was going to throw out all of the power in your house tonight. I didn't think you wanted to be in the dark.
Me: I'm Sorry God
God: Don't be sorry, just learn to Trust Me.... in All things , the Good & the bad.
Me: I will trust You.
God: And don't doubt that My plan for your day is Always Better than your plan.
Me: I won't God. And let me just tell you God, Thank You for Everything today.
God: You're welcome child. It was just another day being your God and I Love looking after My Children

Religion has run out of justifications. Thanks to the telescope and the microscope, it no longer offers an explanation of anything important. Where once it used to be able, by its total command of a worldview, to prevent the emergence of rivals, it can now only impede and retard—or try to turn back—the measurable advances that we have made.

Sometimes, true, it will artfully concede them. But this is to offer itself the choice between irrelevance and obstruction, impotence or outright reaction, and, given this choice, it is programmed to select the worse of the two.

Meanwhile, confronted with undreamed-of vistas inside our own evolving cortex, in the farthest reaches of the known universe, and in proteins and acids which constitute our nature, religion offers either annihilation in the name of god, or else the false promise that if we take a knife to our foreskins, or pray in the right direction, or ingest pieces of wafer, we shall be "saved."

So I loosely follow religion, I don't think Jesus's teachings are the problem, but the people who hide behind the bible to promote their own beliefs. To me Jesus's teachings in their purest form are good lessons to live by, but the idiots who follow his teachings have distorted them to a disgraceful level. I believe Jesus spent time in India where he learned or maybe taught Buddhism [some say he was called St. Issa due to some scripts which have never been recovered, maybe he was maybe he wasn't] Something I'll never understand is how Republicans align themselves with religion and the wealthy when it's apparent Jesus was for the poor and the sick. I read the NT and I come away with the impression that Jesus was a liberal.

Anyway, here are 10 quotes from Jesus which support my beliefs:
QuoteLuke 6:20-21 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: 'Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

'Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. 'Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

Luke 4:16-19 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour.'

Matthew 25:34-36 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."

Mark 10:21-22 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Mark 12:41-44 He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

Luke 14:12-14 He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Luke 16:19-25 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man's table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.

In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.' But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.

Luke 11:39-42 Then the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? So give for alms those things that are within; and see, everything will be clean for you. "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and herbs of all kinds, and neglect justice and the love of God

Luke 12:16-21 Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God."

Matthew 19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Whether you're anti-religion or not is not the question here, the question is how does someone who is religious read these quotes then votes Republican? I've asked this question and have never received a straight answer from a Republican. They mix in some distorted quotes about Jesus not wanting people to get handouts or something similar even though the 10 quotes above are 100% in favor of the poor.

Some good points there, SD.

It's no secret here that I am the one with religious faith (not Mormon, as the board idiots like to proclaim).  My wife and I recently pulled our family out of the church we had attended since the birth of my daughter, partially because it was becoming increasingly conservative and outspoken about political issues under a new pastor that I was not comfortable with supporting with my tithes, or having my children indoctrinated with these beliefs.

Over the past two years I was involved with a heavy-duty bible study (would probably be equal to a workload of a seminary class).  One of the funny things that happened was, every other person in the study became more and more unified in their opinions on the issues, while I became more and more convinced of nearly the opposite while doing the same study.

One example:  We studied the Second Chapter of the book of Ruth (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ruth+2&version=NASB) where Ruth is invited to glean the fields of Boaz to feed her and her mother-in-law.  The pastor was trying to tie this example into welfare, going as far as to say that the Christian solution would be to eliminate welfare assistance altogether and allow generous Americans to allow the poor to collect scraps from our factories and fields to attain a living.

I asked him if an reformed welfare program, one that emphasized (and required) education and/or training wouldn't be, on a societal level, much the same as the allowing someone to glean - and allow them to possibly climb themselves out of the necessity for such assistance.  He said no, it was government-run and would be counter to Christianity.  Then I asked if the earliest Christians did not band together to care for widows and orphans on a societal level (within the Christian communities of the Roman Empire, and between those communities as needs were expressed, as referenced in the Pauline Letters).  He said it wasn't the same thing, and went on to a new topic.

I usually consider myself a political moderate.  I can vote Democrat or Republican (I go for "best for the position," not that I am always right).  I seemed pretty damn liberal in this church towards the end of our attendance there.  The church's position towards Christianity was also trending hard towards the conservative – not fundamentalist, but closer to it than I want to raise my children under.

We started attending a United Methodist church in town.  I grew up in that church, and though it has more of the trappings that make me chuckle than the old church (the standing up for the reading of the Gospel, the ritualistic sayings after hymns and prayers and such), it is much more open and inviting to differing viewpoints than my old church had become.

I think that one answer to your question SD is that people have a tendency to interpret things such as scripture to fit their own world view. People can generally find things in religious writings to, in their interpretation, support their point of view.

In the case of your examples, a religious conservative Republican could site numerous other verses (versus?) to justify their beliefs and put the above quote in a limited context. It is usually fruitless to use scripture to argue a point because one can always argue a counterpoint. At least in their own mind.

But it is a great question you bring up, and is at the root of the original divide between Protestantism and the pre-existing Catholicism. With the burgeoning new faith of Protestantism they rejected the prevailing view of "blessed are the poor." They said screw that, our new church is never going to get rich that way. They sacrificed the control of keeping people poor, primarily occupied in surviving and getting by, for a new world view that extolled the virtues of hard work, productivity and achievement as a means of salvation.

The cynical view holds that the idea was it being a lot easier for your church to get rich if your people work hard and get rich and tithe to you, than if your people are poor and tithe 10% of nothing to you. Especially if you don't have huge armies and political partners at your disposal to go forth and do you bidding.

So the Protestant (Puritan) work ethic - working for God - was introduced as a means to salvation, and sloth and laziness were reviled. 'Doing good works' such as feeding the poor took a back seat to building Cathedrals and infrastructure.

e.g.
2 Thessalonians 3:10
"For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat," and numerous other examples, even if not by Jesus, equating work and success with godliness and the poor, unproductive, always on IR loser with not making the best of their own means. - And probably here lies the antecedents of today's liberal vs conservative arguments, with a Republican view that in this land of opportunity the poor are leaches on society.

The cynical view would also hold that these quintessential teachings of Jesus (the Sermon on the Mount including the beatitudes -  blessed are the poor, the meek, humble and such, and turn the other cheek) were also manipulated as a means of The Man (or The Woman if she happened to be the presiding pope) keeping the people down and maintaining control. The ideal being if they are meek, docile and obedient they are saintly.

However, much of this was, as I said a manipulation. One difficulty is that the original teachings have been altered through so many translations (Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Ye Olde English) that by either necessity or intention the original meanings have often been changed or misunderstood.

For example, many have heard the quote "It is easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the gates of heaven." This seems to support the idea it is good to be poor and implies wealth leads to damnation.

However others contend this is a reference to a common metaphor of the time. Jerusalem was surrounded by a wall (as it is now) and there were large gates to enter. At night these gates were closed to protect against invaders and only a small door was left open for late travelers. That small door was called "the eye of the needle." So to enter, a merchant's camel had to kneel to crawl through, the idea simply being one had to be humble to enter the kingdom in wealth, not that the rich were damned. Others or course refute this saying there is no proof of such a gate.

So the point being, there is a large enough body of scripture and enough ambiguity of meaning and translation, and even enough of conflicting verses, that people can put their own spin and build a case around its interpretation, whether liberal or conservative, and it will generally suit their own predispositions.

I appreciate the rare people who pursue truth rather affirmation. Apparently Reggie White was such a person. At a later point in his life he learned Hebrew to better understand the Bible and was disillusioned with what he found - that there was a gulf between what he then came to understand as original teachings and an apparent bill of goods he was sold by the 'experts' who had previously taught him, and his views accordingly became less rigid.

In the end though conscience > scripture, which was only meant as a compass to point in a direction, not take over one's sensibilities.

That wasn't even an interview.  It was strictly Fox News pandering to the lowest common denominator (again) by saying a Muslim can't be objective about other religious, especially when it comes to Hey Zeus.  Cletus in Alabama was watching that segment while yelling "Jesus rocks!" and high fiving and crucifix.

Iran gettin it done, yo

QuoteCapital Punishment: Iran Billionaire Executed Over $2.6B Bank Fraud

TEHRAN, Iran — A billionaire businessman at the heart of a $2.6 billion state bank scam in Iran, the largest fraud case since the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution, was executed Saturday, state television reported.

Authorities put Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, also known as Amir Mansour Aria, to death at Evin prison, just north of the capital, Tehran, the TV reported. The report said the execution came after Iran's Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.

Khosravi's lawyer, Gholam Ali Riahi, was quoted by news website khabaronline.ir as saying that the death sentence was carried out without him being given any notice. Death sentences in Iran are usually carried out by hanging.

"I had not been informed about the execution of my client," Riahi said. "All the assets of my client are at the disposal of the prosecutor's office."

State officials did not immediately comment on Riahi's claim.

The fraud involved using forged documents to get credit at one of Iran's top financial institutions, Bank Saderat, to purchase assets including state-owned companies like major steel producer Khuzestan Steel Co.

Khosravi's business empire included more than 35 companies from mineral water production to a football club and meat imports from Brazil. According to Iranian media reports, the bank fraud began in 2007.

A total of 39 defendants were convicted in the case. Four received death sentences, two got life sentences and the rest received sentences of up to 25 years in prison.

The trials raised questions about corruption at senior levels in Iran's tightly controlled economy during the administration of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

i was at my first mass today....and holy shtein is this religion a trainwreck. i thought judiasm was farged up but jesus christ this was torture.

-everyone was bowing before going up the stage...or alter...or whatever its called. are they japanese?
-the thing in the back that holds the jesus cookies looks like r2d2 from star wars. i swear. it was cool.
-there was this weird kneeling part that i refused to participate in. even so, thats pretty farged up. nobody should have to kneel for anyone, this isnt 16th century europe.
-it took like an hour, but evidently this was a "fast" mass. a jewish wedding takes like 20 minutes, in and out. maybe the rabbi has a longer spiel...otherwise its a few prayers and OUT. also the glass smashing thing is not a part of the ceremony, which is awful because its the only good part of any religion. everyone should adopt it.
-the priest, who i assume either molested kids or looked the other way when someone else did, essentially said jesus believed in catholicism. he was a farging jew who other people made out to be god. right? am i wrong? what the hell.
-he also said jesus will be resurrected. didnt that already happen? so now its going to happen again? the farg.

all in all an enjoyable experience.

My favorite part is shaking hands with the hotties so it is important you sit in the right place. Choose your seat wisely.

You should go to a mass in a predominate Mexican neighborhood, and just sit back. It's a thing to see.

Damn right bionic! Choose your seats wisely. The chick to whom I lost my virginity - that's how I met her. Catholic Church and Sunday school .

The wedding I attended tonight in Lima was catholic but this priest was more game show host and carnie barker. He was singing and yelling and conversing. Total different atmosphere than what I'm used to. Even the Peruvians thought he was a bit off the wall.

This is all you need to know about Catholicism:  It is an article of faith--meaning if you don't believe it, Rome says you're not Catholic-that the wine and host actually become the body and blood of Christ, and then you eat and drink it.  For Catholics, this is explicitely NOT a symbolic thing, they believe (or are supposed to) that they are EATING the body of Christ and DRINKING his blood every Sunday.

That is no more ludicrous than Scientology, Mormonism, or any other wacked out cult crap you can dig up.

Early copy of the Qur'an discovered (http://www.medievalists.net/2014/11/17/early-copy-quran-discovered/)

QuoteResearchers in Germany have discovered that a manuscript of Qur'an written between 20 and 40 years after the Prophet Muhammad's death, making it one of the earliest copies of the Islamic holy book known to be in existence.

Scholars at the Coranica Project, part of the University of Tübingen, examined a manuscript written in Kufic script, one of the oldest forms of Arabic writing. Using carbon-14 dating on three samples of the manuscript parchment, the researchers concluded that it was more than 95 percent likely to have originated in the period 649-675 AD.

The manuscript is one of more than 20 fragments of Kufic script held by the Tübingen University Library. This particular item was donated to the university in the 19th century.

The entire manuscript has already been digitized and can be viewed here (http://idb.ub.uni-tuebingen.de/diglit/MaVI165).

They had nice hand writing back then but their spelling was atroscious.

How cool would it be if they realized the stuff like stoning women who got raped was mistranslated from women who got raped should be allowed to get stoned.

so with the pope in town over the weekend my Jehovah neighbor made sure to voice his opinion on all the other phoney religions and how witnesses are the only true Christians. he really dug into catholics over the molestation cover ups and what not, which I have no problem with but hearing him go on & on about how pure his cult is led me to google rape/molestation by JW's and this came up for me to show him on the spot.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2678038/Jehovahs-Witness-elder-jailed-14-years-sexually-abusing-young-female-members-congregation-raped-one-woman-leaving-pregnant.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2678038/Jehovahs-Witness-elder-jailed-14-years-sexually-abusing-young-female-members-congregation-raped-one-woman-leaving-pregnant.html)

he actually went on & on about how its true that if a woman doesn't scream or fight against her attacker she is considered a whore. I asked him who determines if she resisted her attacker and he said the elders do. I asked based on what if they weren't there ? he said they form an opinion on the woman and make their decision from that.

I told him you cant agree with that, what if it was your wife or daughter. he actually said he would side with the elders and shun either one of them.

what an awesome thing to say about your family.

guy was a really great friend, but little by little I have distanced myself from him ever since he turned to that cult. his kids both left the religion (well his son was actually kicked out because he had pre-marital sex) and while he hasn't shunned them he def treats them as if they did wrong. the rest of his cult has shunned them and wont even step foot in his house. he used to be pretty high up but now is pretty much just an errand boy at this point so he is only useful to them for cutting the grass at the hall and moving things around with his pickup.

2 Brothers Were Beaten for Hours at Secretive New York Church, Police Say (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/15/nyregion/lucas-leonard-beating-death-at-upstate-new-york-church.html?smid=pl-share)

QuoteNEW HARTFORD, N.Y. — After services on Sunday, the two brothers were called into a counseling session in the sanctuary of a secretive upstate church here called the Word of Life.

The session was supposed to be a chance for church members "to discuss their spiritual state," the authorities said on Wednesday. The brothers, ages 19 and 17, were met by their parents and an older sister, as well as other congregants.

Then the counseling turned violent.

"Both brothers were subjected to physical punishment in the hopes that each would confess to prior sins and ask for forgiveness," Chief Michael S. Inserra of the New Hartford Police Department said at a news conference on Wednesday.

For several hours punches and kicks landed all over the teenagers' bodies, he said — on their stomachs, genitals, backs and thighs.

The older brother, Lucas Leonard, was found unresponsive and not breathing the next morning by church members, Chief Inserra said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma.

QuoteMichele Bachmann said that there should be a bigger effort to convert Jews to Christianity ahead of the arrival of Jesus Christ. "We recognize the shortness of the hour," Bachmann said on Tony Perkins' radio program during a tour of Israel of last week. "And that's why we as a remnant want to be faithful in these days and do what it is that the Holy Spirit is speaking to each one of us, to be faithful in the Kingdom and to help bring in as many as we can — even among the Jews — share Jesus Christ with everyone that we possibly can because, again, He's coming soon."

That doesn't surprise me. We can accuse somebody of multiple murders - and even have them openly confess their crime - but for heaven's sake, don't you dare use their real name, because it might embarrass them.

The whole EU privacy thing is a complete pain in the ass, and you'd have a hard time designing any system that does a better job at preventing things from getting done.

(Side note: On my previous job, I was tasked with going over historical records and consolidating purchases of things like metal raw material and industrial chemicals. I needed to find out who was responsible for what activity at a number of plants, and it was like running into a brick wall. You couldn't look people up in the company directory, and even if you could find a name, their title and/or working group would be completely invisible. And nobody would help me sort through it all - the best I got was a bunch of finger pointing.)

Exactly. The practice of public shaming is part of why the justice system is completely farged in this country. The whole idea behind jail sentences is that you pay your debt to society and then, you know, the debt is paid and you're supposed to be able to go on with your life. That doesn't work in a world where everyone knows that you committed a crime once. In fact, for most people who spend time in prison, you might as well just put them behind bars for life because their chances of returning to society and contributing are pretty farging small.

This dude is a murderer and probably mentally ill. So, get him into prison or a hospital, get him treatment and get him medication if he can be helped. Do whatever civilized societies do with people like this in situations like this. If he can't be helped, let him rot. But releasing his name does nothing to further the cause of justice.

I really don't care one way or the other when it comes to releasing a criminal's name, but if I had to choose, I'd probably lean towards it being public info.  If nothing else, it exposes your white collar wall st criminal types who need to be publicly shamed as much as possible.

He needs his ass whipped.

Churches should absolutely be taxed. Joel Osteen's joint rakes in the cash. He rolls around in a Ferrari and when it came time to open his doors to help Harvey victims he didn't do it until he was shamed. And even when he did they had workers passing around a collection plate.

Sometimes we will get churches call in to buy some lumber and plywood and they'll want to have the taxes waived. Which we can do - provided they fill the paperwork out. But there's a few instances where they seem to think they don't have to. Had one dude arguing with me over $13 once.
